starts right now. >> it's a silent night for christmas eve on live doppler seven. we're getting a break between storms just in time for the holiday. thanks for joining us on this christmas eve. i'm j.r. stone and i'm karina nova. >> we started the day with a level two storm on the abc seven news storm impact scale. it was pretty rough out there, but it cleared out by midday. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a look at the forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, and you know what, j.r. and karina, it is one of those evenings where you couldn't have planned it better for santa to make those deliveries. let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. and you will notice that much of the bay area is in the clear. we have a few clouds around. certainly has been snowing in the sierra, and we do have thunderstorms over parts of the sacramento valley. looking at our local radar taking you back in time, you probably remember this earlier today. there were downpours. there were a few lightning strikes off the coastline and

certainly did see some flooding around. so there is a flood advisory going for parts of sonoma county until 730. flood advisory until 730 tonight, as it takes a little bit of time for the runoff to occur. now, as we look at the hourly forecast this evening, 40s and 50s, at 7:00, 930, those temperatures are dropping. 40s, 50s dropping even lower down to the 30s and 40s. as we head towards the morning hours, there will be a frost advisory for the north bay valleys by the afternoon. we're talking about 50s for your temperatures. the high surf warning was just dropped. we now have a high surf advisory until 6 p.m. tomorrow evening. i'm going to be back with a look at that, plus your holiday forecast coming right up. j.r. >> sandhya we look forward to that. now to developing news in santa cruz. a day after part of a pier collapsed yesterday due to high waves, dangerous debris is washing ashore. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has been on the story since the start. he shows us how things

are looking today. >> high surf monday sent danger throughout santa cruz, including the city's harbor. but it's what the high surf did at the santa cruz municipal wharf that captured nationwide attention. 150ft at the end of the wharf collapsed into the ocean. the area that collapsed had already been closed for construction because of storm damage from years before. >> we did have two project managers inspecting that space, really for work progress and also for incident reporting. when the wharf went down. >> three people fell into the water. two were rescued, one got out of the water on their own. a restroom facility that was once on the wharf was swept away to a spot nowhere close to where it stood for years. >> and just to see a toilet, you know, a bathroom right at the river mouth. it's. it's surreal. i can't believe it. >> so right now, the concern from officials is the debris in the water, including the restroom facility behind me

that's now resting against the cliff, but also how to move forward and to protect this area against the escalating impacts of climate change. >> what happens when you are a jurisdiction on the edge of the continent? in a world of climate change? do you simply say that was that, and we're going to put everything back and see how it goes? i'm not as sanguine about that. meaning i think we need to take time outside of the context of the heat of the moment and understand what it is we're going to do. >> federal assistance may be on the way. congressperson jimmy panetta toured the damage tuesday. >> my job is to make sure we pull all the strings when it comes to our bureaucracy, when it comes to our federal resources, to ensure that the wharf is repaired and we move on in a resilient fashion in the short term, locals and businesses near the wharf say they're concerned for those who make their living on the wharf. >> the restaurants down there, their employees and, you know, a

city landmark. what what happens next to keep that safe and be able to, you know, keep, keep the wharf as we all know and love. >> the city is working with engineers to gather data over the coming days to get a better picture of the structural integrity of the wharf, but for right now, the wharf is still closed indefinitely. in santa cruz, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> zach. thank you. a hayward toy store owner faces thousands of dollars in losses and damages after his business was hit by burglars twice in two hours. both break-ins left the inside of brick by brick toys in shambles. the first happened around 530 this morning. the owner says he got a call from his alarm company telling him about the burglary. >> we checked the cameras and we saw that somebody had reversed their car in through the double doors right behind him, and four people jumped out, went around, grabbed a bunch of stuff. they clearly been inside the store before because they knew exactly where to go. >> the owner says about an hour later, someone crashed a jeep

through another store front window, grabbed more merchandise and drove off. that makes three smash and grab burglaries at the store. since it opened four months ago. >> not one, but two new menorahs will help oakland celebrate hanukkah this year. last year, oakland's largest menorah was destroyed and thrown in lake merritt with the first day of hanukkah. now only one day away. abc seven news reporter lena howland is following the story, and this was the sign that was in the lake. >> it was floating in the lake when we found it. >> a sign of resilience and hope on proud display outside of the chabad jewish center of oakland. this is the same menorah that was destroyed and thrown into lake merritt during hanukkah. >> last year we were able to get some great volunteers locally here to put together piece by piece, to bring it back to the way it was. >> rabbi dovid lepkowski has been the director of the center for 18 years. but in the last year, he says anti-semitism has

grown over the summer. at least one person was caught on camera throwing rocks at the center's windows on multiple occasions. since then, the center has replaced windows and installed new security cameras and a metal vestibule. >> once you get access into the first door, then you get questioned again, and then you go through the second door, so it's an extra layer of protection. >> the vandals were never caught, but rabbi lepkowski says police investigated each incident as a possible hate crime in the year after the october 7th, 2023, attack in israel. the anti-defamation league reported more than 10,000 anti-semitic incidents across the u.s. >> i think it's even more important this year to show, show your jewish pride, show the pride of the light over darkness. show the pride of this beautiful oakland symbol of the menorah, and then show that we're not going to back down. >> thanks to community donations collected last year, rabbi lepkowski also ordered a second menorah to tower over lake merritt at 15ft tall, with plans

to put it up in the same place where the original one was destroyed. >> we're still trying to figure out how to light it. if we need a bobcat or a cherry picker. >> they're inviting the entire community to come out for the lighting of the fifth candle of that brand new menorah sunday night at 430, right here at lake merritt. >> the fifth candle is. you know that tipping point of five out of. out of the eight lights. which shows that even at the darkest moments, we have more light than dark. >> in oakland. lena howland abc seven news. >> and from hanukkah to christmas, it is the last chance to get christmas shopping done. some people ventured out despite today's storm, which even caused some damage overnight. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is in the north bay, where it's down to the wire for shoppers. rain or shine. >> reporter chris madison shows us the damage done to his lexus. when a large tree fell on beaver lane in santa rosa during an overnight storm. >> cars probably totaled. i mean, it's a ten year old car,

but windows out, things broken on the side, trunks dented, roofs dented. both bumpers. >> broken part of the tree falling against this house. >> not the way you want to start your christmas. >> not really, but, you know it'll be fine. i'm just glad we can get out. and it didn't take out the car. we were about to go on a road trip on the storm, delivering significant rain and wind. >> no match for these holiday inflatables in san rafael. frosty and rudolph were down, but not out. >> we come from morgan hill so we came here uh. we drove last night and it was pretty, pretty crazy. the fog. we couldn't see anything on the freeway. whoa! >> yeah. freddy pedroza and his family are visiting relatives in novato. but first, a rainy trip to vintage oaks shopping center for some last minute shopping. it's been raining. did that stop you? no. it didn't. >> it could be thunder. and i'm still shopping. >> procrastinated a bit, but finding everything i need here. what are you looking for? mostly presents. like clothes for my brother and dad in santa rosa.

right now from our santa cruz camera. good evening everyone. the surf is still up. it is still hazardous along the coastline. so the national weather service dropped the high surf warning. they have now issued a high surf advisory. it's in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow. those breakers between 15 to 22ft means life threatening surf conditions, hazardous swimming. stay out of the water. you can see current wave heights are between 5 and 14ft, so it's going to take a little bit of time before those swells subside a bit. as we look at live doppler seven, there are some thunderstorms in our in the valleys, not here in the bay area. we had some downpours earlier in the day and was distributed pretty evenly. as you will notice right now, 6/10 of an inch in livermore 4500, san jose 7000/300 in santa rosa. everyone got in on the action, a little under a half an inch in san francisco over that in oakland, 50/200 in half moon bay. winter weather advisory is still going until 7 p.m. tonight

for the sierra. 3 to 6in above, 6000ft higher for the peaks. when you have those gusty winds, it is hazardous travel conditions, so keep that in mind. right now they are still chaining up on some of the roads leading to the mountains. it is in the 50s san francisco, oakland, hayward right now, and san jose, 52 degrees in redwood city. golden gate bridge camera showing you a lovely view right now. temperatures in the low 50s from santa rosa to fairfield, concord, livermore. we do have good air quality after that storm has passed. and a really nice view from exploratorium overnight tonight. chilly with some patchy morning frost, christmas and hanukkah. it's going to be nice for the holidays and thursday through sunday periods of rain and showers. it's not going to be completely wet all day long all four days, so don't worry about that all. obviously we welcome the rain, but tomorrow it's not going to be raining. it's a chilly start for your christmas day. lovely for the holiday. temperatures will be in the 50s and then turning cloudier later in the day for hanukkah. we do

have mostly cloudy and cool conditions at sundown when the celebrations begin. sunset is at 456. low to mid 50s. wishing all of you happy holidays. frost advisory tomorrow morning for the north bay valleys. midnight to 9 a.m. watch out! protect those sensitive plants and don't forget about your pets. temperatures down to the low 30s means there will be some frost around 31 at lakeport. mid 30s napa, santa rosa. it's going to get down to 38 in livermore. some of the chillier spots and a little bit of fog out towards the delta. if you are traveling, keep that in mind. if santa is delivering those gifts, i don't think he's going to have any problems tomorrow. he will deliver those gifts tomorrow afternoon, upper 40s to the upper 50s around the region. now we're going to fast forward to show you what's going to happen. so overnight tonight, a little bit of fog starts to form in the central valley, spills over tomorrow morning. and then you get that break all day tomorrow, 1230 in the morning on thursday some showers move in 8:00. you will notice just very spotty showers. we really have to wait until thursday night for the

widespread light to moderate rain. and that will continue off and on going through the weekend. now, thursday's rain totals will range from about a 10th of an inch to three quarters of an inch. i do want to show you what's beyond that thursday time period. as we head into friday, we will see another storm move in and then that continues friday night. and then more wet weather for your weekend. that will continue off and on through sunday before we get that break. so let's check out those rain totals and snow totals. this is really warmer system. so nine inches truckee 16in kirkwood. this is thursday through the weekend looking at anywhere from 4/10 in san jose to just about close to two inches in santa rosa. over a half a foot of rain up north. your accuweather seven day forecast dry for the holidays. we have level ones thursday through sunday and then a break monday and tuesday. so green and jay are looking good. perfect for the holiday. >> yes, white christmas in the sierra too. >> i know, it's so pretty. sandia. thank you. and you can get warm and cozy with the yule
