>> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> it is a silent night on live doppler seven and a chilly christmas eve for parts of the bay area. the rain is taking its own holiday right in time for christmas and hanukkah. good evening. on this christmas eve, i'm j.r. stone christmas eve began with a level two storm on our storm impact scale, and it's ending with drier weather. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your holiday forecast. sandhya. yeah. >> and j.r. the holiday forecast looks fantastic. let's first start with the chill that we're all feeling here in the bay area. it is 42 degrees right now in napa. temperatures dropped to 43 in livermore. so no doubt about it. as the skies have cleared behind the storm that came through. we do have cold weather coming our way. a frost advisory midnight to 9 a.m. tomorrow. temperatures as low as 30 degrees means there will be frost, so watch out. take a look at this live view. this is from the sierra zephyr cove. if

you're dreaming of a white christmas, you got it up in tahoe. here in the bay area. it's a break from the stormy weather tomorrow for christmas day. a chilly start, temperatures 40s 50s at 9 a.m. noontime. it's lovely for the holiday and it's mostly cloudy later in the afternoon. going into the evening hours. turning cooler. speaking of the evening, the sun sets at 456. and if you do celebrate hanukkah, the celebrations begin at sundown. as you all know, mostly cloudy and cool, low to mid 50s. i'm also keeping an eye on the surf while the wave heights are slowly subsiding. we're still not out of the woods. a high surf advisory going until 6 p.m. tomorrow. breakers 15 to 22ft means hazardous swimming and surfing conditions. current wave heights are between 5 and 13ft. a full look at your holiday weekend forecast. j.r. and i'll let you know when rain is back in the forecast. >> we look forward to that. love that snow as well. >> it's pretty. >> yes you can track the weather using the same live doppler

seven tools our weather team uses. just head to abc seven news.com or the abc seven bay area app to follow the forecast 24 over seven. people in santa cruz could really use a break from the rough waves as they begin to clean up from the wharf collapse. tonight, pieces of the pier are washing up on beaches across santa cruz county after 104 150 foot section went crashing into the waves yesterday, taking three workers with it. fortunately, they all got out safely. engineers are still examining the structural integrity of the wharf with no timeline for repairs. it's a big concern for businesses worried about how long they may be closed down. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn spoke to business owners about the damage done. >> it was, you know, it was frightening. >> huge waves pummeled the santa cruz municipal wharf monday and eventually sent a 150 foot section of the pier falling into the water. gina marini owns marini's candies. it's one of a

dozen businesses on the wharf that escaped damage, but now must close indefinitely. >> we were open. it's one of our busiest days of the year, and we had a bunch of people in the store, and marini was at costco when part of the pier collapsed. >> as for his wife and daughter, they were in the store, and then they went over to stag narrows and were getting some fish for dinner tonight. marini's daughter and wife saw the aftermath of the collapse. his wife jenny captured this video and she turns and gets her camera out and sees a huge section of the wharf that had just broken off. >> just float away. i mean, i mean, it was crazy. >> the section of the pier that collapsed into the ocean had been closed for construction because of previous storm damage. >> that section down there, they had taken a lot of the asphalt out because they were trying to fix the pylons down there, and so it became a little looser, and that whole area was blocked off with a fence. >> tuesday morning, marini and other business owners were

allowed to return briefly to grab supplies. losing days of business, possibly more, is going to hurt. >> it's really crushing to not only us, but all the other businesses down there. >> dave johnston owns venture quest kayaking on the pier. his kayak rental shop is closed for the season. johnston says big storms have damaged the wharf and roads in the area for the past 2 to 3 years. >> sea level is rising, we know that and storms are getting more intense. that's climate change. >> he says the partial pier collapse is devastating. >> it's very sad and very serious, and i can only hope that the repairs will be made and that the wharf can continue its tradition of being the center of our community, our main attraction. >> hopefully they can get this done and we can move forward as soon as possible. >> suzanne phan abc seven news. >> there is a push for federal funding to repair the wharf, and the santa cruz harbor is in rough shape as well. from torn

apart docks to sinking boats, yesterday's high swell left behind plenty of damage to the boats and the docks. you see the waves right there. some boats are beyond saving and many people are concerned over how long repairs may take. >> i've been here all my life and i saw this harbor being built. and this is the most extreme thing i've seen. >> the red cross is helping people who lived on their boats find other places to stay in the north bay. police are investigating a restaurant manager they believe was recording people in the women's bathroom for months. police arrested him yesterday at ohana hawaiian barbecue in santa rosa. a customer found a phone hidden in a bathroom vent. police say it had been recording for more than 45 minutes. they arrested the manager who owns the phone. investigators are now working to find out if there are any more victims. turning now to holiday travel. with so many families

hitting the road to reach their destinations on this christmas eve, looking live out on our bay area roads tonight where things are clear, sailing for the time being. no major crashes or closures to report tonight. now to a live look at san francisco international airport in san jose. mineta. during what could be the busiest weeks for travel this year. american airlines experienced a technology outage this morning, causing it to ground planes for a few hours. now, according to flightaware, there were more than 110 delays at sfo today, 27 at san jose and 20 delays in oakland. between the three airports, there were four cancellations. it was a snowy drive in the sierra tonight, leading to some spinouts and slow traffic. but the fresh powder was good news for families seeking a white christmas. plenty of people hit up the nyack snow park off of i-80 today for some sledding and snowmen. >> it's easy to get here because

you don't have to go all the way up to summit, so a lot less to deal with. and it's easy access right by the gas station, so it's a good spot. >> conditions on 8-80 in kingvale were slow moving tonight. this was taken just a few hours ago. chain controls are in effect, but both 80 and 50 are open tonight. so many volunteers spent their christmas eve helping to build a better bay area by making sure everyone can have a christmas meal. that mission is getting more challenging. food banks in contra costa and solano county are seeing a double digit increase in demand. abc seven news reporter anser hassan shows us how they're handling it, even on christmas eve. >> volunteers are busy filling bags for distribution. that's because the need for food at contra costa solano food bank is up 20% just in the month of december. >> we serve enough food for 65,000 households every single month in contra costa and solano counties. so there are literally

thousands of people that are worried about where their next meal is going to come from. >> caitlin slye is ceo of the food bank of contra costa and solano. she says the food bank is now distributing 2.7 million meals every month. >> oh, look at that. >> slye says some of it's economics the bay area's high cost of living inflation. but, she adds, many people are still recovering from the pandemic. >> i think we're just seeing a lot of people that are still struggling from the pandemic. i think people have the feeling that the pandemic is over somehow, but we haven't seen the need go down. and so people are really still struggling and need food. >> maxine ingersoll is a high school volunteer. she keeps coming back knowing the impact the food bank has on the community. >> i think it was very surprising to me how many people close to where i live struggle with food insecurity, but i think it was also really surprising that at first i thought it was just homeless people or people that were extremely poor. but it's people that have houses, people that have jobs. >> charlene clark is a regular volunteer. she's not at all

surprised by the increase in food insecurity, even in parts of contra costa county. >> it's just expensive all over. housing is expensive, and i can see by the people coming in how much they appreciate when you do hand out the food, or at the senior distributions or the other distributions, there's a real need for it. >> the holidays is really a critical time. it's make or break for food banks. >> slye says every dollar donated translates into two meals, but donations are down. slye says they're running a 3 million meal campaign, hoping to raise enough money for 3 million meals by the end of the year. otherwise, the food bank will face challenges in the new year. >> we have to make some tough decisions about what types of foods we're able to distribute, how much food we're able to distribute, and we don't want to have to make those tough decisions. >> in concord, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> holiday shopping procrastinators. well, your time is pretty much up. we saw plenty of folks in san jose hitting up department stores and flooding

shopping center parking lots before they close tonight. most major retailers and grocery stores will be closed tomorrow, but if you're in a pinch, some locations including safeway, foodmaxx, lucky's, and walgreens will be open. and another christmas eve tradition in the south bay gathering for mass at the cathedral basilica of saint joseph was packed with people celebrating tonight's christmas eve mass. they'll be holding a bilingual midnight mass about 50 minutes from now. a menorah has returned to lake merritt for the first night of hanukkah, which is tomorrow night. it is 15ft tall. this one will replace the menorah that was vandalized last year and then tossed into the lake. donations helped fund the new one that was purchased by the chabad center of oakland. the rabbi says this is the perfect symbol for the holiday, especially given the rise in anti-semitism, particularly after the october 7th attack on israel last year. >> the more darkness, the more light we need, the greater

light, the more and we're not going to back down. no matter what happens, we're going to be here and we're going to, you know, fight the good fight and we're going to put up more menorahs, and we're going to spread the light and spread the message of light and peace in the world. >> a community celebration is planned for sunday, which is the fifth night of hanukkah. >> we're going to keep going. we're going to. we might have to beef up security, but we're not. we're not going anywhere. >> a lego store is cleaning up after thieves cleaned them out. how the community is helping them recover. brick by brick. also, bird flu killed a cat. and now health leaders are raising pet food concerns. plus, a massive lottery drawing didn't make any billionaires. but one lucky californian just got $1 million

a lego store in hayward is hit not once but twice on christmas eve. each time, the burglars smashing their way inside and then running and stealing items thanks to those grinches. instead of enjoying the holiday, the owner spent it picking up the pieces. legos are coveted by thieves, so much so that stores often keep them locked up. the store owner tells us he lost about $10,000 worth of toys, but his customers made sure he didn't lose hope. in a matter of seconds, thieves rammed their way into brick by brick toys with a car. once they had the doors open, four people sprinted into the store, grabbing items and then leaving, all within 30s. the store owner says the alarm company called him and he came out to see the damage. police were there, but the thieves were long gone. he then

locked up the doors and went home after checking the surveillance video, but the burglars came back, hitting the store 90 minutes later at 7 a.m. two people got out of the jeep and helped themselves to a bunch of merchandise. this smash and grab lasted about 90s, the crooks being careful to hide their faces. the owner was visibly frustrated when he returned tuesday morning to sweep up the mess. >> 99.9% of the people that i meet doing this are just incredible people, and then we just have a small few that want to ruin it for everybody. >> brick by brick has been open for only four months, and it was hit once before on halloween night. the grinches might have left their mark this time around, but the christmas spirit persevered. >> i mean, we're going to keep going. like we have, like, amazing customers. like, these guys are all just customers that woke up this morning on christmas eve, saw what happened, and the first thing they thought was, how can we go help? >> undaunted by what happened,

owner michael marinakis is vowing to reopen and keep selling legos to his loyal customers. but he's going to make some changes. >> we're going to keep going. we're going to we might have to beef up security, but we're not. we're not going anywhere. >> and certainly a good luck to them. michael says he used to be a teacher, but he stopped so he could sell legos full time. he's been in the business now for about three years. there's a recall of one kind of pet food tonight after bird flu was detected in some product samples. it is the feline turkey recipe. raw and frozen pet food from northwest naturals. health officials in oregon say one cat died after eating the food. the packages are 2 pound bags with best used dates of may 21st, 2026 and june 23rd, 2026. the recall is voluntary. several cats in los angeles county have died from bird flu after drinking raw milk. nationwide, there are over 60 human cases of bird flu. no one is going to be celebrating christmas as a newly minted billionaire.

unfortunately, nobody hit all six of the mega millions numbers tonight. the jackpot went off at $1 billion. that means it will rise to at least 1.1 billion for the next drawing on friday night. someone who bought a ticket in l'amour in the central valley did get five numbers, which is worth about $1.7 million. congratulations to them. time now to get a check of the weather. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. i think it was. it sounded like a thumbs up earlier. >> yeah, it's winning weather for christmas, hanukkah, j.r, and for santa. of course, santa is going to have no problems getting those gifts to where they need to go. good evening everyone. let me show you live doppler seven. you know, earlier today we had that level one storm slam the bay area. it was quite the soaking. this morning. we had gusty winds, some lightning strikes off the coast. now all is quiet. as you can see on live doppler seven, as that storm has moved out of the picture and we are just dealing with some patchy fog that is

developing. so let's take a look back at the rain totals. 4/10 of an inch in san francisco, three quarters in santa rosa napa area, about 6/10 in oakland and out towards livermore, san jose picking up 4000/500 almost an inch there in ben lomond. your temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. some of our coldest spots are inland places like napa, 42 degrees. all right. we are tracking the next storm. this is thursday's storm. the good news is, before this storm arrives, we get a break just in time for the holidays. but we do have dangerous surf that we were tracking. this is from santa cruz earlier today. the surf is still up. the high surf warning was dropped, but an advisory was issued that is in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow. just be careful if you're going to be out at the coast. a glorious view of downtown san francisco from our sutro tower camera. here's a look at tomorrow's forecast. 8:00 in the morning, 40s you're looking at noontime 50s inland and at 5:00

pm in the mid 50s for christmas, for hanukkah, looking at bayside communities, mostly cloudy, mid 40s, and then eventually into the mid and upper 50s and coastside. you're going to go with calm conditions in the morning, 40 to 50 eventually, and that's at 8 a.m. if you are dreaming of a white christmas, i do want to show you this from the sierra tonight. this is zephyr cove. you can see the snowflakes were just flying. there was a winter weather advisory earlier, but that has been dropped. so this system is done. but there's more snow in the forecast for later on in the week. overnight tonight. chilly, patchy morning frost. that view was from our exploratorium camera. christmas and hanukkah dry for the holidays. but thursday through sunday we're going to get periods of rain and showers once again. chill in the air. low to mid 30s. north bay valleys inland east bay valleys in the upper 30s. bundle up if you do have those early morning plans tomorrow afternoon it is going to be mostly cloudy. temperatures mainly in the 50s. now we're going to fast forward. i'm going to show you what's going to happen tomorrow morning. we're going to see some

of the fog from the delta area spill over. so there will be some patchy fog in the morning. santa's got the reindeers. not to worry. thursday morning we do see some showers returning. very spotty in nature. a big break throughout the day. and then thursday night is when more widespread rain moves in and continues into the late night hours. and then there's more rain coming after that. but thursday's system will produce anywhere from about a 10th of an inch to 6/10 of an inch of rain. looking at the rainfall beyond thursday. on friday, we're going to see rainy conditions all day, pretty much. and then as we head into saturday morning, a few showers. certainly not a washout. sunday is when we'll get our last round of rain for the accuweather seven day forecast. and then you get that break for monday and tuesday. we welcome the rain here in the bay area, as you all know, and the snow in the sierra from thursday through sunday, expecting about eight inches at truckee, 13in at kirkwood. if you're heading up over a half a foot of rain there in crescent city, santa rosa over an inch of rain expecting about 4/10 in san jose and

santa. here is a live look at the norad santa tracker. norad started doing this almost 70 years ago. an update right now. santa is over utah. we're told he'll be over arizona in just a couple of minutes, but this was started for children back in 1955, and it happened accidentally. they gave the number for the continental air defense command operations center in colorado springs. the colonel who answered a child's call, pretended to be santa. and that's how the tradition was born. you can find the norad santa tracker on our website, abc seven news.com. but again, santa is over utah and should be over arizona in the next couple of minutes. san jose's christmas in the park was busy tonight

seven. we got five games on abc seven tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. espn reports that former cal quarterback fernando mendoza has a new school in indiana. mendoza entered the transfer portal earlier this month. he will now play at the same school as his brother was a freshman qb for the hoosiers this past season, and christian mccaffrey knows that his presence can brighten the day for fans. he went room to room at lucile packard children's hospital in palo alto, bringing some much needed holiday cheer. great job christian. sports on abc
