that they cause. >> yeah. so another round of waves today and tomorrow that comes with some rain this morning. here's live doppler seven. we'll swing it through the last 30 minutes or so. and you notice the showers are very light out there driving into the city. it was a fine mist and drizzle at times. so that's what we're dealing with this morning. steadier rain is going to move in here later on this evening after about 5 p.m, but live doppler seven the sweep showing you we have scattered showers out there. it is a level one all day today, but it's not raining the entire day. this morning we have scattered morning showers. we do get a lull in the activity around lunchtime. it's pretty dry around noon, but then this evening widespread rain comes back at night and high surf along the coast. be aware of that. temperatures right now will get you started in the 40s. in the low 50s. good morning oakland. you're at 51 degrees later on today. here's noon. it's mostly cloudy. not a whole lot going on. but then later on this evening watch as the showers really return. and then we're just in and out of the rain through early tomorrow morning. so enjoy that brief break in the

activity. midday temperatures upper 50s to the lower 60s under mostly cloudy skies. let's check in with sue. see, the commute is going. >> it's pretty quiet this day. after christmas, the rn will affect your drive. it's like drew said, it's pretty heavy mist, light rain. however you want to look at it coming across the golden gate bridge. it's wet on the roads. not so much standing water yet, but that could come. and we're looking at a very light commute this morning. this is the east shore freeway, a little fuzzy because of the wet weather. you can see some fog maybe affecting your visibility in the north bay, but overall we are looking green and good for very light conditions at this hour. >> all right sir. thank you. an unwelcome christmas morning surprise. investigators in capitola are working to learn what caused a home to explode. reporter brooke kinnebrew spoke with neighbors in the area. >> this is video footage of a four unit home in capitola exploding on christmas morning, shortly after 5:00. neighbors waking up out of their sleep to

the noise, not knowing what happened. >> definitely shock and fear, you know. of course i was worried about the people. you know, i was hoping. i was really hoping. there's nobody in there. >> the explosion sparking a fire caught on camera as flames consumed the building's roof. david says he felt the heat from the flames. >> the flames were coming out of the roof, but you could see the whole inside of the apartment. it was all blown out. it was all on the on the ground and everything. so it looked, you know, like a bomb went off and i was pretty freaked out. >> as people walked through capitola village, many were floored at the damage left behind. >> this is just jaw dropping, but it can also bring us together, realize what we have and move forward. i'm speechless because on top of everything else that has happened, this is the really unexpected. this isn't mother nature, you know. this is just chaos. so there is no answers other than to find out what happened. >> public works says the explosion may have been caused by a natural gas leak, but crews

are still working to confirm the exact cause. p-g-and-e's crews were on site fixing a power outage caused by a blown transformer, believed to have resulted from the explosion. police say no one was injured and that was brooke kinnebrew reporting in capitola. >> close by in santa cruz. clean up at the wharf and questions of what comes next. part of the wharf that collapsed monday were restrooms that were not in operation closer to the end of the pier. now, the damaged pier has become a tourist attraction after washing up on the beach. crowds have been gathering all week long to see the damage and even snap some photos. santa cruz officials have shut down the wharf until further notice as they assess the damage there. it's waiting for a damage assessment. the city is. estimates are about $20 million right now, and there may be more trouble on the way to. a storm off the coast. is expected to bring some more high surf this weekend. as drew just told us, the national weather service

says to expect waves of up to 30ft tall over the coming days. a high surf advisory goes into effect for the region starting at 10:00 this morning through sunday afternoon. the affected area spans from the north bay down to big sur. officials are recommending that inexperienced swimmers stay out of the water, and that people avoid visiting waterside infrastructure, like the piers that we just told you collapsed. >> and today is your last chance to visit the san francisco flower mart's longtime location in soma, before it moves to its new home. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez has more on what what's in store for the neighborhood staple flower shop? gloria. >> good morning. yes, i'm at the san francisco flower market. this is on six and brannan in soma. and you can see behind me, they are just starting to get set up for today. it's the last day you can buy your flowers here. this has been here nearly six decades. and starting next thursday, january 2nd, the flower market is moving to its new location at 16th and mississippi in the potrero hill neighborhood. the new space is

smaller. it will house only about 27 of the current 40 vendors who are here. those are the only ones that are moving over to that new location now. it was established at fifth and howard streets 100 years ago in 1924. this is the largest wholesale flower market in northern california. it is going to be opening at 8:00 this morning. so we'll be out here talking to some of the vendors. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> all right, gloria, thank you. now, some last minute christmas magic helped save a holiday meal program for homebound seniors. every year, the salvation army relies on volunteers to deliver meals to seniors who can't leave their homes. this year, they had 4400 meals to deliver. but there were there were dozens of volunteers short. and to make matters worse, thieves stole the batteries to three of their delivery trucks. but a call for help was answered. volunteers stepped up and someone paid to replace the car batteries. >> this feels like a hallmark movie. it's a christmas miracle. people came through. we got the batteries. we we've got the

volunteers. they came in. we know that when you put the word out to this community in the bay area, they just step up. >> oh, and the salvation army also dealt with another setback. gunshots shattered the front door of their bayview location. fortunately, that damage is already being repaired and the giving spirit is on full display in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. >> saint anthony says it served more than 1500 meals there yesterday with the help of 60 volunteers, kitchen staff prepared more than 1,000 pounds of lemon rosemary chicken, 900 pounds of potatoes and 1600 servings of homemade focaccia and cookies too. in the east bay, one restaurant spent the holiday hosting a gift giveaway for kids and adults who otherwise may not have had anything under their tree. abc seven news reporter lena howland explains, for many families, this act of kindness made all the difference. >> they say not all heroes wear capes, and not all santas wear

red suits. >> how many people in your group? >> in this case, he wears a green vest. >> this is so cool. >> johnny show just celebrated the 15th anniversary of his restaurant, rebel kitchen and libations in livermore. they survived through multiple shutdowns during the pandemic, and on christmas day, they're giving back to the same community that kept them afloat. >> there's a lot of people who christmas is really hard for, so this is our opportunity to maybe just give back a little bit, give them, you know, maybe 20 minutes of some christmas cheer. >> powered by community donations from schools, churches and customers, shell invited families in need for a gift giveaway. no sign ups, no proof of address, and no questions asked. >> i think it's kind of indicative of the times we're having right now. there's a lot of people having having tough times not allowed under the tree. >> up until like three days ago, we didn't think we'd have a christmas for evangelina sanchez and her family. >> this made all the difference. >> it makes the kids happy and, you know, it just really it helps kind of liven spirits during dark times. >> her mom, evelyn, says the

family had fallen on tough times over the past few years. >> being homeless ourselves and being housed, you know, after six years, there's so many people that people look at them like, you know, like they're trash or whatever it is. so this restores everyone, i think gives them a little hope. you know, that little light and the giveaway wasn't just for the kids. >> i got a corgi, but adults too. >> we think about our kids. kids come first and the fact that they said adults as well. so it's like, oh yeah, you feel like a kid again. >> you know, nakia parker is a single parent of three, but with inflation combined with life's unexpected curveballs, this was something that still made christmas possible. >> it's beautiful that people still care. and that's what we all need someone to be able to reach out and help. and it's okay to reach out to get help. >> a tradition this santa hopes to continue to grow for years to come. >> honestly, i couldn't think of a better way to spend my christmas day just to see the look on people's faces. >> merry christmas in livermore. lena howland, abc seven news.

>> thanks, lena. 509 this morning it's a live look outside from the exploratorium camera, and the wet weather is back and will be in and out of the showers not only today, but through the upcoming weekend. a pretty active pattern with us. here's live doppler seven you're noticing overhead. currently it's just scattered, very light showers. winds are light as well. it's later on this evening we'll find some steadier rain continuing into early tomorrow morning as we take you to tahoe. right now live. look, we do have snow falling on our highest peaks. just checked 80 and 50 chain controls are in effect as we track this snow coming down. we are underneath a winter weather advisory until noon tomorrow. we're talking 4 to 12in of snow above 6000ft, so snow levels are pretty high. some of our highest peaks could pick up more than a foot of snow, some gusts of 45mph. so that creates some slick and slower travel. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. northern california seeing that rain this morning. southern california dry and cloudy.

five years. bloomberg first reported. lyft is now suing the city, claiming its tax calculations incorrectly included driver compensation as part of its revenue. a spokesperson for the san francisco city attorney's office told the chronicle they are reviewing the complaint and will respond accordingly. the legal battle is part of a broader debate about how gig economy companies like lyft should be taxed, given their reliance on independent contractors rather than traditional employees. >> we have a warning this morning if you bought organic eggs at costco, the food and drug administration is escalating the recall of kirkland signature eggs to the highest level. that means if carries a significant risk of serious illness due to a potential salmonella contamination. the eggs have a use by date of january the 5th. you can return the eggs to costco and get a refund. >> firefighters in the south bay who saved a boy from a burning home were reunited with him as part of an annual holiday

tradition for the santa clara county fire department. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes spoke with the young survivor and his mother about that special visit. >> thank you for saving me. saving me? >> justin houston and his mom, holly nelson, have a lot to be grateful for this holiday season. after this fire destroyed their home, it happened earlier this month. their home sat just above the brookdale post office in the santa cruz mountains. it happened while the family was asleep. some of them made it out quickly, but roston was still inside. >> i was terrified, i didn't know what to do. >> holly and her fiance were frantic outside. her fiance busted a window trying to get roston out, injuring himself in the process. each second agonizing. >> any mom's like worst fear is something like that happening. like i never, ever experienced that. no, i don't ever, ever wish that for anybody, especially if you have kids. >> holly says it was a ben lomond firefighter who saved her

son's life. >> nick burgess is the firefighter that pulled him out and i just wanted to tell him, thank you so much. >> that gratitude extended to all local firefighters, including the santa clara county fire department, who delivered toys to roston and other patients at santa clara valley medical center. youth patients who can't make it home for the holidays. >> the support that we got from the community and from from everyone, and now the firefighters is just overwhelming, so amazing. we're just so grateful for everything. >> the firefighters are just as thrilled by the special day. >> very heartwarming. you know, it's definitely a little emotional, but and we're just very excited that we can do this for these children today. >> roston is still recovering from burns and smoke inhalation. the family is without a home and will be staying in a local hotel. still, roston and holly are grateful that the rest of their loved ones who escaped the fire are out of the hospital, and roston is excited about joining them. >> i really feel like there was

somebody watching over him that night. in san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> so the official numbers aren't out yet, but many are assuming millions logged on to their netflix account to watch beyoncé's nfl halftime performance. during yesterday's matchup between the ravens and the texans. all the songs during her 13 minute performance were from her latest country style album, cowboy carter. >> she brought out some special guests like country star shaboozey post malone and even her 12 year old daughter blue ivy joined her to dance. but it's what happened after the performance that has a lot of people talking this morning. so this is what she posted to instagram. i think she also posted this on her x too. after the big performance, the caption says look at that horse and alludes to a date of january 14th of next year. so what does it mean? some people are saying it could be a tour announcement. it could be the next album in the trilogy, the release of the renaissance tour film that people have been begging for. >> what could it be? i mean, beyonce.

along our coast this morning. here's live doppler seven. you're noticing just a peppering of light showers out there. we're not seeing any bright colors like deep reds and yellows indicating heavier rain, so it's fine mist and drizzle at best in most areas. so here's a look at future weather. we get a break in the activity around lunchtime. we keep the cloud cover all day long so it is an overcast sky temperatures at that hour. we're in the upper 50s to lower 60s. then later on this evening after the sun goes down, you can see that rain filling right back in. here's 7 p.m. light rain at first, but we are indicating early tomorrow morning. we'll stop the clock here right around 2 a.m. we're tracking some downpours. that's the yellow and oranges you see on your screen as this system moves through here. and then first thing tomorrow morning, as you're waking up, the showers are tapering, but we'll still keep some scattered showers in the forecast all day on friday. so looking at rainfall totals as we head through today and tomorrow, for a lot of us around the bay shoreline, likely half of an inch to three quarters of an inch of rain, a little bit

higher in the north bay, about an inch to an inch and a half. no threat of flooding. we may see some standing water on our roadways, no flood watches in effect, and the winds are not all that breezy with this system. could see wind gusts from time to time 20mph. and that's why we're keeping it at a level one. here's the high surf advisory. this will last several days until 4 p.m. sunday. now, waves not as high as we saw in the last week where we saw those issues in santa cruz. but still, there will be some breakers 20 to 30ft high that is hazardous. swimming and surfing with the increased risk of drowning because of those waves being so active. so looking at highs today, some light morning showers giving way to steadier rain later on tonight. it's just a cloudy day out there, upper 50s to the lower 60s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you morning showers to evening rain. wet and breezy tomorrow morning. still scattered showers saturday into sunday and then the sun is back next week. mostly sunny on monday. dry for new year's eve on tuesday and a sunny start to the new year on

lake tahoe area is under a winter weather advisory. the national weather service is warning of worsening travel conditions today and tomorrow as more snow storms move through the tahoe region. >> number four storms off the coast are expected to bring more high surf to bay area coastlines. the national weather service has issued a high surf advisory starting at 10:00 this morning through sunday afternoon. >> number five investigators are looking into what caused a house explosion in capitola. neighbors say the fire was so intense they could feel the heat from the flames. fortunately, no one was hurt. >> number six, the fda is escalating the recall of organic eggs sold at costco to the highest risk level. customers should check their eggs for the upc number and use by date you see on your screen here. if their eggs are part of the recall, they should either discard them or return them to costco to get a full refund. >> number seven there's still time to try and become a billionaire in 2024. nobody won the christmas eve mega millions

drawing. now tomorrow's drawing will be worth $1.1 billion. now, today is the first day of the week long celebration of kwanzaa. kwanzaa was created in 1966 as a non-religious way for african americans to reconnect with ancestral roots. it is celebrated every year from december 26th through january 1st. each candle a candle is lit each night on a seven branched candelabra called a kinara. the candles include one black, three red, and three green to represent the people, the struggle and the future. san francisco city hall will also be lit up in those colors in celebration tonight. >> this year, christmas day coincided with the start of hanukkah. san francisco's union square was the place to be last night. no matter what you're celebrating, abc seven news reporter tara campbell was there. >> and just like that, the menorah is lit and hanukkah has begun. crowds gathering at san francisco's union square in celebration. >> it doesn't matter what race,

toll plaza this morning. you can see some of those light showers falling down some slick roadways out there. live doppler seven. over the last half hour. you notice the showers are really scattered in nature and very light in nature. the biggest issue you'll have this morning is just some slower travel times. as the rain falls through. steadier rain is going to move in here later on this evening. after about 6 p.m, we'll see some steadier rain and some heavier downpours first thing tomorrow morning on the abc seven storm impact scale. today it's a level one, a light storm for those scattered morning showers. we have widespread rain coming our way later tonight and high surf along our coast. so looking at the day planner today, we have those morning showers. right now we get a break in the activity around lunchtime and through the afternoon. we're dry this afternoon with mostly cloudy skies. then the steady rain is back this evening. daytime highs today will get you into the upper 50s and lower 60s. so the umbrella gets a workout this morning. and then later on this evening, daytime highs will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. let's check in with sue. see those

drive times as well? >> yeah, it is a wet excuse me out there. and because of that we've got bart runningt lower speeds, slower speeds i should say system wide. so expect some delays this morning as drew showed you, the bay bridge toll plaza. no mention of metering lights yet. the roads are slick, so heads up. we do have a high wind advisory for the bay bridge and for the benicia bridge as well. and around the bay over the altamont pass. so get a good grip on that steering wheel because you could get blown around, especially in your smaller vehicles. san rafael is moving at the limit past the northgate mall. no issues all the way into the city from the golden gate, and we don't even have a commute for our early morning risers out of tracy into livermore, so things are looking great. just a slight backup at the bay bridge approaching the macarthur maze. just a few slow cars in the area, but overall not a problem. there's a look at your altamont and one solo spinout on 85 in the south bay. this is near winchester. it is partially

blocking a lane perpendicular, so please be careful in the area. >> all right, sir, thank you. investigators are trying to piece together wha passenger plane flew hundreds of miles off course before crashing in kazakhstan. the fiery crash happened yesterday. 38 people were killed, but 29 people survived, including two children. russian news agencies say the plane was headed to russia but was rerouted due to fog. however, the flight path shows the plane flying hundreds of miles off course before crashing. russia says a bird strike took the plane down, but some aviation experts are skeptical. >> we have a mystery on a mystery here. we have a picture of what appears to be the tail section of the airplane with holes in it. holes that can't be explained by any regular problem. certainly not with hitting birds. >> some experts are questioning whether drone strikes in southern russia played a role in what happened. the focus now for investigators will be examining the black box that were recovered from the crash site.

>> nearly half a million ukrainians are without heat and electricity this morning, following a massive christmas day attack by russia. the country took aim at ukraine's power grid, hitting cities with ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles. russia is calling the attack a success, while ukraine calls it inhumane. before the attack, about 80% of ukraine's energy infrastructure was already destroyed by russian bombs. back here in the bay area, an oakland family is mourning the loss of a caring son. he died just yesterday trying to rescue his family from a fire. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> the family of steven weatherford started christmas day mourning his loss. he died trying to save his family from their burning house. >> steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house. he succeeded. so much. >> lashawn mayo was steven's

girlfriend. she just learned on christmas morning that he was going to propose on new year's eve. >> i know he's looking down on us right now, and i don't know what else to say. i just wish he was here right now. >> his aunt, eunice smith, says for generations, the weatherford had hosted big holiday parties like christmas at the family home. she says steven was sleeping on the couch when the fire erupted. >> he was just trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house. he may not have known that. they all went out the back, and my other nephew was calling for him because they were all in the back. and they were they were calling steven. steven, come out, come out. and they heard him screaming and he never made it out. >> the oakland fire department says the cause of the fire is still unknown, but that it got a call around 6:15 a.m. of a house fire. when crews arrived on scene, they found steven's body inside. they believe he was likely overcome and disoriented by the smoke, and appeared to have died from smoke inhalation. >> he was a good person. he was a good family man, you know, so

the neighborhood's staple flower shop. good morning gloria. >> good morning to you, julian. yeah, the setup is underway behind me for the last day. the market is open. you can see it's still closed at this time. itt's will open a little later this morning. the new space for the san francisco flower market is smaller. it will house fewer vendors. only 27 of the current 40 vendors here are moving over to the new location. that will be at 16th and mississippi in the potrero hill neighborhood. the flower market was established at fifth and howard streets 100 years ago, in 1924, but it has been at its current location here on brannan and soma for nearly six decades. and starting next thursday, january 2nd, the flower market is moving to its new location. this is the largest wholesale flower market in northern california. and back here live again, they're getting ready to open up at 8:00 this morning. so we'll be out here all morning long and talk to some of the vendors out here throughout the morning. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news.

>> a big change for the soma neighborhood. thank you so much, gloria. the annual chipping of christmas trees is coming back at the civic center plaza in san francisco. officials announced how you can also be sustainable this holiday season by joining recology's christmas tree collection. okay, so this is how it works. residents can set their tree on the curb the night before their scheduled pickup, and trees taller than six feet must be cut in half. the more than 30 year old tradition is an effort to protect the city's environment. now, as millions of americans start to head home after the holidays, there is a storm moving ashore and bringing rain from washington all the way down to us here in california. how feet of snow and flooding rain could impact a very busy travel day. abc news reporter alison kosik has more. >> this morning, high surf alerts along parts of the west coast. waves expected to reach as high as 30ft just days after this historic wharf collapsed in santa cruz. oh my god. swells

battered the pier, 150ft of the walkway, plunging into the ocean. newly released drone video showing the extent of the damage. the wharf abruptly split, handrails dangling towards the ocean. a new storm system is fueling the high surf, dumping heavy rain from washington state down to northern california and up to three feet of snow from the cascades down to the sierra and east to the rocky mountains north of salt lake city. this avalanche buried a snowmobiler after carrying him 150 yards. thankfully, he had a locator beacon and his brother found him and dug him out in time. while in denver, snowfall disrupted drivers heading home from holiday celebrations. an interstate partially shut down due to the conditions, but there were festive tidings from new yorkers who celebrated their first white christmas in 15 years. >> our first one since 2009. we needed at least an inch of snow on the ground in central park.
