brannan street for about 58 years. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live at the market, with more on its relocation coming in just one week. gloria. >> good morning. yeah, they're gearing up to open the flower market for the last time at this location. and behind me, you can see it's still closed right now. it will open up in a couple of hours. and starting next thursday, january 2nd, the flower market is moving to its new location at 16th and mississippi in the potrero hill neighborhood. the new space is smaller. it will house fewer vendors. only 27 of the current 40 vendors here are moving over there. it was established at fifth and howard streets 100 years ago, in 1924, and this is the largest wholesale flower market in northern california. it will open at 8:00 this morning. live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> all right, gloria, thank you. an unwelcome christmas morning surprise. investigators in capitola are working to learn what caused a home to explode. reporter brooke kinnebrew spoke

with neighbors in that area. >> this is video footage of a four unit home in capitola exploding on christmas morning, shortly after 5:00. neighbors waking up out of their sleep to the noise, not knowing what happened. >> definitely shock. fear. you know, of course i was worried about the people. you know, i was hoping. i was really hoping. there's nobody in there. >> the explosion sparking a fire caught on camera as flames consumed the building's roof. david says he felt the heat from the flames. >> the flames were coming out of the roof, but you could see the whole inside of the apartment. it was all blown out. it was all on the on the ground and everything. so it looked, you know, like a bomb went off and i was pretty freaked out. >> as people walked through capitola village, many were floored at the damage left behind. >> this is just jaw dropping, but it can also bring us together, realize what we have and move forward. i'm speechless because on top of everything else that has happened, this is the really unexpected. this

isn't mother nature, you know. this is just chaos. so there is no answers other than to find out what happened. >> public works says the explosion may have been caused by a natural gas leak, but crews are still working to confirm the exact cause. p-g-and-e's crews were on site fixing a power outage caused by a blown transformer, believed to have resulted from the explosion. police say no one was injured. >> that was brooke kinnebrew reporting in capitola. close by in santa cruz. cleanup at the wharf and questions of what comes next this morning. part of the wharf that collapsed monday. there were actually restrooms that were not in operation, located closer to the end of the pier. now, the damaged pier has become a bit of a tourist attraction. after washing up on the beach. crowds have been gathering all week long to kind of get a look at the damage and snap some pictures. santa cruz officials have shut down the wharf until further notice as they assess the damage. the city is waiting for that damage assessment. preliminary

estimates are about $20 million. as to the cost for repairs, and there may be some more trouble on the way to a storm off the coast is expected to bring more high surf this weekend. the national weather service says to expect waves of up to 30ft tall over the coming days. high surf advisory goes into effect for the region starting at 10:00 this morning. it will last through sunday afternoon. the affected area spans from the north bay down to big sur. officials are recommending that inexperienced swimmers just stay out of the water, and the people avoid visiting waterside infrastructure like piers. >> some last minute christmas magic helped save a holiday meal program for seniors who are not able to leave their homes. every year, the salvation army relies on volunteers to deliver meals to seniors who can't leave their homes, and this year they had 4400 meals to deliver. but there were dozens of volunteers short. and to make matters worse, thieves stole the batteries to three of their delivery trucks. but a call for help was answered

and volunteers stepped up and someone paid to replace the car batteries. >> this feels like a hallmark movie. it's a christmas miracle. people came through. we got the batteries. we? we've got the volunteers. they came in. we know that when we put the word out to this community in the bay area, they just step up. >> the salvation army also dealt with another setback. gunshots shattered the front door of their bayview location. fortunately, that damage is already being repaired. >> the giving spirit is on full display in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. saint anthony says it served more than 1500 meals there yesterday with the help of 60 volunteers, kitchen staff prepared more than 1,000 pounds of lemon rosemary chicken, 900 pounds of potatoes and 1600 servings of homemade focaccia and cookies too. >> in the east bay, one restaurant spent the holiday hosting a gift giveaway for kids and adults who otherwise may not have had anything under their tree. johnny shell just celebrated the 15th anniversary of his restaurant, rebel kitchen

pope francis called for talks to end the ukraine war. ukrainian officials criticized the pope earlier this year when he said the country should have the courage to negotiate an end to the war with russia. the 88 year old pontiff celebrated his 12th christmas as pope this year. he called for an end to all conflicts in places including lebanon, mozambique, haiti, venezuela and nicaragua. another christmas tradition made a triumphant return this year. defeat of france in paris. the notre dame cathedral celebrated its first mass on christmas day since a fire nearly destroyed the landmark in 2019, following the destruction, nearly $1

billion in donations poured in from all around the world. notre dame, celebrated for masses on christmas eve. people were able to attend without a reservation. the cathedral reopened to the public on december 7th. firefighters in the south bay who saved a boy from a burning home were reunited with them. it's part of an annual holiday tradition for the santa clara county fire department. a fire destroyed a family home above a post office in brookdale in the santa cruz mountains earlier this month. mom holly says a ben lomond firefighter saved her son ralston's life. the santa clara fire department delivered toys to ralston and other young patients at a local hospital who couldn't be home for the holidays. >> very heartwarming. you know, it's definitely a little emotional, but and we're just very excited that we can do this for these children today. >> ralston is still recovering from burns and smoke inhalation. the family is still staying in a local hotel, but say they're grateful to be alive.

trying to save his family from their burning house. >> steven was truly the best person you could ever meet. he loved his family, his friends, everybody so much. he died trying to get them out of the house and he succeeded. i loved him so much. >> lashawn mayo was steven's girlfriend. she just learned on christmas morning that he was going to propose on new year's eve. >> i know he's looking down on us right now, and i don't know what else to say. i just wish he was here right now. >> his aunt, eunice smith, says for generations, the weatherford had hosted big holiday parties like christmas at the family home. she says steven was sleeping on the couch when the fire erupted. >> he was just trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house. he may not have known that. they all went out the back, and my other nephew was calling for him because they were all in the back. and they were they were calling steven. steven, come out, come out. and they heard him screaming and he never made it out. >> the oakland fire department says the cause of the fire is

still unknown, but that it got a call around 6:15 a.m. of a house fire. when crews arrived on scene, they found steven's body inside. they believe he was likely overcome and disoriented by the smoke, and appeared to have died from smoke inhalation. >> he was a good person. he was a good family man, you know, so it's important that, you know, he saved his family. he saved four people in that house. he woke them up and he saved them. and he went back, i guess because he wasn't sure if everybody was out of the house. so, yes, he was a hero. >> mayo's mother, sandra clark, also had high praise for who would have been her soon to be son in law. >> when i met him, i said, that's the one. that's the one. yeah. and her father and i, we all just loved him so much. and he loved her so much. and i found out that he was going to propose to her. he had bought the ring, and he didn't give her a chance to give it to her. but it's in the house and we're

going to find it. >> a gofundme account has been set up to help the family in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news investigators are trying to piece together why a passenger plane flew hundreds of miles off course before crashing in kazakhstan. >> the fiery crash happened yesterday. 38 people were killed, but 29 people survived, including two children. russian news agencies say the plane was headed to russia but was rerouted due to fog. however, the flight path shows the plane flying hundreds of miles off course before crashing. russia says a bird strike took the plane down, but some aviation experts are skeptical. >> we have a mystery on a mystery here. we have a picture of what appears to be the tail section of the airplane with holes in it. holes that can't be explained by any regular problem, certainly not with hitting birds. >> some experts are questioning whether drone strikes in southern russia played a role in what happened. the focus now for investigators will be examining the black boxes that were

recovered from the crash site. >> nearly half a million ukrainians are without heat and electricity this morning, following a massive christmas day attack by russia. the country took aim at ukraine's power grid, hitting cities with ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles. russia is calling the attack a success, while ukraine calls it inhumane. before the attack, about 80% of ukraine's energy infrastructure was already destroyed by russian bombs. >> a deadly christmas day car crash near golden gate park is under investigation. it happened just before 4 p.m. in the area of crossover and park presidio. that's where police discovered a single car engulfed in flames. fire crews put out the flames and pulled a person from the car. that person died at the scene. >> today is your last chance to visit the san francisco flower market at its current location in the south of market neighborhood. the shop is moving to a new, smaller space come next week. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live at six and brandon streets,
