tonight after a christmas break. the rain is back and it will be with us for several days to come. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm larry beil. this could be the last series of storms for this year. and today's storm ranks as a level one on the exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale, which means it's basically it's a light storm. so here's a snapshot of conditions around the bay area. and it's dark. it's that's why i'm not the meteorologist frances dinglasan knows what's going on. hi, frances. hi, larry. oh. oh, frances. we'll get to frances in a second. there's a winter weather advisory in the sierra. live. look at zephyr cove right now. all right. that i can identify as as. precipitation. uh. obviously, you know, snow there at this time of the year is common. peaks could see an extra foot of snow by tomorrow afternoon. chain controls already in effect for drivers on interstate 80 and highway 50. >> all right, let's take a live look at santa cruz. looks calm at the moment, but the whole bay coast is under a high surf

advisory that will last through the weekend. waves could be as tall as 30ft. now take a look at the waves hitting the rocks below the cliff house in san francisco. with conditions like this, swimming and surfing of course, considered very dangerous. be careful walking on the beach even or near coastal rocks. the waves are strong enough to sweep people out into the ocean. all right, let's turn to abc seven news meteorologist frances dinglasan for a look at the forecast. >> now we go to frances. hi, larry. >> not a bad job. thanks, dan. so we will show you live doppler seven once again to show you what you can expect. we did see the light rain already move through the bay area just in the past hour or so. and to give you an idea what the light green rain means, it's very light precipitation, generally one hundredths of an inch an hour. and then i'm going to click on the yellow. and that shows the more moderate rainfall. that's where we can see a third of an inch an hour. but it will be moving very quickly. we will start to see more of the

moderate rainfall, especially late tonight. so it's a level one storm on our exclusive storm impact scale. widespread rain through tomorrow morning. rainfall totals range from half an inch up to an inch, and even more in some locations, especially along the north bay hills. and of course, the dangerous surf continues along the coast. so grab a rain jacket and also an umbrella. you're going to need it overnight. tonight you'll start to see the more moderate rainfall move through the north bay in the next few hours, and then by midnight tonight, that's when the winds pick up. and that's where we could even see some heavier rainfall, especially towards cloverdale. that's the areas of orange and red. and then notice by tomorrow morning it turns into scattered showers. and then we get a bit of a break during the middle of the day before some more showers return later on friday night. so rainfall amounts you notice in the north bay, like ukiah, that's where we could see over an inch 1.5in. and that's why there is a flood warning in

off the santa cruz coastline, despite the beach closure warning. but it's not just surfers ignoring warnings. people from across the bay area want to get a look at the direct effects of the partial wharf collapse. what brought you out here then? >> this just to see this. >> okay, so i drove over here and i'm bike riding in the rain to go see where the bathroom is washed out to, to into the cove. because i don't know why, but we're all just fascinated with the floating bathroom that's now lodged in the cove, and everybody wants to go look at it. >> 150ft at the end of the wharf collapsed monday, sending that restroom facility and other debris up and down the coastline. three people fell into the water. one got out on their own. two were rescued. the city of santa cruz telling abc seven thursday that two lifeguards actually witnessed the moment the wharf collapsed and called it in. the city's marine safety division had been staffed up ahead of the expected high swells. those two lifeguards sprang into action and rescued the two, who were stranded on the floating remnants of the wharf. those who know and love the area say

they're grateful that no one was hurt. but with more storms and high surf continuing to cause these serious impacts, they wonder what happens next. >> i don't know what the answers are. the sea is just a thing of its own. >> the area of the wharf that collapsed had been closed to the public and was undergoing a $4 million repair project. but the city admits climate change has made it hard to keep up. >> with our wharf being over 100 years old, it requires regular maintenance to repair and continue to ensure safety. we've proactively been reinforcing infrastructure with preventative maintenance to withstand future storms. again, mother nature holds the cards, and we do know that these west swells are continuing to grow in severity. >> right now, the wharf is still closed to the public indefinitely. now, as for those two lifeguards who performed the rescues, the city says that we're going to get a chance to hear from them tomorrow in their own words, so we'll be sure to bring that to you if and when that happens in santa cruz. zach

fuentes, abc seven news. >> a fundraiser for the family of a man who died in a christmas day fire is raising thousands of dollars. 37 year old steve weatherford, junior, died while rescuing family members from their oakland house while it burned. fire officials sayit weatherford helped several people out, but he was overcome by smoke after going inside one last time. a gofundme to help cover the memorial service and the family's financial needs now tops $12,000, and we have a link to it on abc seven news.com. the fundraiser is being organized by neighbors. more information now. coming out on a fiery vehicle crash that killed one person in san francisco on christmas day. fire officials say the vehicle. that crashed and burst into flames was a tesla. the driver was killed. no indication on what caused the accident. this happened on 19th avenue and crossover drive yesterday afternoon at golden gate park. >> oakland police are looking for clues as to who smashed into a supermarket this morning. it happened before dawn at the lucky store on mountain boulevard in oakland. the thieves used a car to ram

through the front glass doors. they also used a crowbar to split open an atm, which was left smashed on the floor. crews spent the day repairing the damage. employees say the store has been rammed by thieves in the past. it's happened before. members of a mosque in san francisco are worried about their safety and their security. tonight, that's after a man was caught on surveillance camera tearing pages out of the koran. what's more, they say that same man has harassed people who belong to the mosque before. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has the story. >> the islamic center of san francisco is one of the oldest mosques in the state of california. members say they witnessed a hateful act on december 24th. >> he's thumbing through our holy book, the quran. >> the suspect, someone with a history of harassing mosque members. >> we've had run ins with him about, i would say, about 3 or 4 times. >> zohaib siddiqui is with the islamic center of san francisco. >> he showed up with religious books, korans, bibles, and he started standing in the front, tearing pages from the quran,

waving from a security camera. looked like a hammer, though i think later it looked like to be a toy hammer and kind of confronting any people coming into the mosque. >> this isn't the first time a mosque in san francisco was targeted this year in april. video captured a different man using a skateboard to smash six windows at a mosque on sutter street. zara bilo is executive director of care, council on american-islamic relations, san francisco. >> people are fearful that this is now becoming normal. we've heard more reports of mosques targeting in the city of san francisco this year than in any other year in cair's existence. >> some people worry about the rise of islamophobia as the u.s. changes leadership to the rise in hate that we are seeing is not just about donald trump, but also about the us backed genocide in palestine. neighbors say targeting any mosque is wrong. >> it's very sad and frustrating, and i really hope people open their hearts and are more welcoming and accepting

because we're all immigrants to this country. >> islamic leaders say more needs to be done. >> we are experiencing a 30 year high in anti-muslim and anti-palestinian racism, and our call is specifically to elected officials and to law enforcement to send a very clear message that hate will not be tolerated in san francisco against any community. >> in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> the san francisco flower market opened its doors today for the last time at its longstanding location. the market, soma warehouse housed flower vendors for 68 years. next week, it's moving to its new home in the potrero hill neighborhood. kilroy realty bought the building in 2014 and promised to secure another warehouse foe market for many vendors. it's obviously tough to say goodbye to the only home their businesses have known. >> melancholy. it's. i feel like i grew up in this market. there's a lot of folks that have

he is helping lafayette save a piece of east bay history. lafayette park theater on golden gateway is a mainstay of the downtown area. in a push for help from the community, one family agreed to match any donation to the theater's renovation project up to $25,000. but here's the catch the offer only stands until new year's day, so the countdown is on now for more funds. >> when they realize that their $5 all of a sudden becomes ten, or their $50 becomes 100, and it goes towards this, you know, really significant, once in a lifetime effort to bring a project like this to the east bay. >> the place hasn't been used for movies since 2005, but a renovation could preserve the architecture and allow it to be used for live music, weddings and youth programing. >> tomorrow, for the first time, the nonprofit habitat for humanity will host a free

redwood city at 59 and half moon bay at 54 degrees. from emeryville. you can still see across the bridge there the bay bridge into san francisco, and numbers are dropping in parts of the north bay, like petaluma and also fairfield, down to 52 degrees, napa and santa rosa at 55, concord, 53, livermore 57 degrees. here's a live view in san jose. so they're also getting some rain right now. and here's what you can expect with the weather. so overnight we will get light to even moderate rain. and then friday afternoon to saturday mainly spotty showers. it will be hit and miss on sunday is when we see our final wave of rain move through. and i'll show you that too with the futurecast animation. so midnight tonight, the areas of yellow and orange that indicates the heavier rainfall, the more moderate rainfall that will slide through the bay area. then you'll notice it turns into spotty showers during tomorrow morning. by

midday, we get a little bit of a break. just some cloud cover before some spotty showers return through friday night and into saturday morning. most of these spotty showers will hit the north bay and will miss many parts of the rest of the bay area. then sunday early morning is when we see our final wave of rain. and if you're out early, especially in the north bay, that's where we'll see most of the rainfall. it slips through very quickly. by sunday afternoon we start to dry out, which is some welcome news for people who are sick of the wet weather. but with this northwest flow, there is a high surf advisory. this extends through the weekend until 4 p.m. sunday. waves up to 30ft. these won't be as strong as the waves we saw earlier this week, when it was more of a direct westerly flow, but it's still going to be dangerous at the beaches, and especially hazardous to people who don't have a lot

of swimming and surfing experience, because it does increase the risk of drowning. of course, we're going to get more snow. as larry and dan mentioned, up to a feet of snow above 6000ft. so try to avoid driving right now to and from the sierra until after noon tomorrow, because that's when likely things will calm down. and right now there are chain requirements on 80 and 50 gusts, also up to 45mph. so plan on delays if you do have to travel tonight and early tomorrow. tomorrow's lows will generally be in the mid 50s with those showers tapering off and then highs under partly cloudy conditions and some pop up showers. temperatures will be almost near 60 degrees for everyone. 59 in san francisco, but san jose will be milder at 64 degrees. now. rainfall totals by the next few days and by the end of sunday will range from anywhere from an inch to even over 2.5in in areas like ukiah.

and then once the rainfall is gone, we are going to have a sunny day on monday for the 40 niners game at levi's stadium, but it will be chilly even at kickoff. temperatures will already be in the low 50s, and then by the end of the fourth quarter, probably near the mid 40s. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it's going to be wet and breezy to start, but then things taper off. and then we have those scattered showers into saturday. that final round of rain on sunday and monday, even though it will be mostly sunny on monday, tuesday, wednesday, it's going to be very chilly in the morning and it's going to be cooler as well. so grab a jacket for those of you celebratin. for all the new year's eve celebrations, new year's celebrations. >> and so it's official. dan's gift was the best gift. >> umbrella handy. >> yes, i like that gift. and they get broken all the time. i'm always buying new umbrellas. >> put it in my car today, so i'm ready. all right, well, the first report card for holiday

that azerbaijan airlines plane that crashed on christmas day may have been shot down by a russian anti-aircraft system. >> it was flying from azerbaijan to russia, but it crashed in kazakhstan. 38 people died. 29, though, did survive. they are injured, however. abc news reporter perry russom has the latest on the investigation. >> new video from the downed plane in kazakhstan shows several holes on the side oe aircraft. you can see the metal bending in, showing what appears to be puncture marks. it's not clear if these holes were made before or after the plane went

down, killing at least 38 people on christmas day. a u.s. official telling abc news there are early indications the plane was hit by a russian anti-aircraft system. >> it is clear from the pictures that you just showed that it does look consistent with a strike from a missile from the panzer s, which is a russian air defense system. >> video taken from the ground shows the azerbaijan airlines flight in its final moments in the sky. the plane falling and rising erratically, at one point appearing to aim straight toward the ground before leveling off. moments later, the plane crashing into a ball of fire. first responders racing to the scene. survivors emerging from the upside down wreckage. more than two dozen people found alive. the flight path shows the plane taking off from azerbaijan and flying into russian airspace, then crossing the caspian sea before crashing in kazakhstan near the aktau airport. the ceo of osprey, a flight security company advising airlines that still fly over russia, says there was a

significant drone attack near the plane while it was in the air. >> there are lots of indicators to point towards a shootdown of that aircraft. >> investigators have recovered the flight data recorder. that should help them find out how this happened. perry russom, abc news, washington. >> russia has targeted ukraine's power grid, escalating the conflict that is now three years in. russia's military launched missiles and drones to take out energy to a million people. so they're now without heat in freezing winter conditions. russia is calling the christmas day attack a success, while ukrainian president zelenskyy called it inhumane. president biden has vowed to provide more weapons to ukraine. zelenskyy says about 80% of ukraine's energy infrastructure was destroyed prior to this attack. >> today marks 20 years since the deadliest tsunami in history. on december 26th, 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast ofake indonesia, an indonesian island of sumatra. it triggered massive

tsunami waves across the indian ocean, which slammed into 14 countries, killing about 230,000 people. with no early warning system and minimal sea level data, many were left with no time to escape. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration has since stepped up its investment in tsunami science. it deploys buoys to detect seismic events quickly and more accurately. bui data was used during the recent humboldt county quake, which triggered a tsunami warning for the bay area. remember, that warning was canceled after an hour or so because no big waves had been detected. >> a huge fire broke out in a century old building in downtown los angeles today. that building was believed to be vacant, but fire crews raised ladders to help homeless people inside come down to safety. >> a lot of these structural members are exposed because it was under renovation or demolition. unclear at this time. uh- fire department responded. they found that there was a lot of people unhoused

living in this building. dozens of people in this situation were self evacuating from the building. >> crews battled the fire for nearly two hours. they couldn't enter the building due to damaged structural integrity. no injuries reported. the cause of the fire is unknown. >> a body was found in the wheel well of a united flight that flew from chicago to hawaii. it happened on christmas eve and is still being investigated. also on christmas eve, a stowaway was caught on board a delta airlines plane before taking off from seattle, also headed for hawaii. the would be passenger managed to avoid showing a boarding pass, but was otherwise screened by security. the person was taken into custody. if that sounds familiar, a similar event happened last month. a russian woman was arrested in november for stowing away on a delta flight from new york to paris. >> coming up. fish that can grow as big as humans. venomous snakes. coming up. see how local scientists are helping federal authorities deal with exotic

environments healthy and climate ready. they do. >> it's amazing work they do. and in some cases, creatures from those environments unexpectedly come to them, landing right here in the bay area. >> as abc seven news anchor dion lim learns, that is when the work really begins. >> so we're offering tilapia and earthworms today. >> it's dinner time for some hungry young fish about to hit a monster growth spurt. the specimens, called arapaima, were plucked out of the amazon in peru and illegally imported into the u.s. biologist kelsey pauling is teaching them the aquatic table manners they'll need when they're moved to a bigger tank at the steinhart aquarium at the california academy of sciences in san francisco. that's where they'll grow to roughly the size of a human. >> so having the hoop. we're hoping that when we move them into a different system, they'll still recognize this as where they get fed and they'll come up to the surface. >> she says the academy got the

call after the arapaima were intercepted by u.s. fish and wildlife in l.a. wherever they were heading probably wasn't good. >> they are not good pets because they grow up to 6 to 8ft in length. they live 20 plus years, or they can and potentially cause environmental havoc if they're released into a non-native environment. >> but it's not an isolated incident. for years, the california academy of sciences has assisted fish and wildlife as they patrol sfo and other entry points in the state, combating everything from illegal smuggling to bad decision making. >> oh for sure. i mean, there are people that are quite naive with respect to what is a poisonous animal or a plant, for example, or something that's noxious. there are people that are quite knowledgeable and can tell things apart and still decide that they want to have those kinds of things, so they will bring them into the country. >> charles delbecq directs aquarium projects at the academy. he says their biologists routinely identify protected exotic corals illegally poached from the aquarium trade. this reptile exhibit is home to a gila

a stay of kwanzaa. kwanzaa was created in 1966 as a non-religious way for african americans to reconnect withan their ancestral roots. it is celebrated every year from december 20th 6th to january 1st. a candle is lit each night on a seven branched candelabra called a kinara. the candles include one black, three red, and three green to represent the people, the struggle and the future. san francisco city hall lit up in those colors in

celebration tonight. here is a live look and it is spectacular. it really is beautiful. >> well, christmas day has come and gone, of course, but the celebration continues. and today is national candy cane day. it's observed every year on decembers 26th. no one is sure exactly when candy canes came to into existence, but they were first associated with christmas as early as 1874. christmas tree collection in san francisco started today. now through january, folks can put their trees on the curb the night before their scheduled pickup. trees must be cut to five feet or less. the trees are converted into mulch and used for landscaping projects, so they are reused, and most bay area counties offer some form of christmas tree recycling or composting. check with your garbage service provider to find out what to do and when. we've put links county by county on our website abc seven news.com.

things change every year for sure. so does the forecast. more rain is on the way. >> yes. and here's francis with the story. yeah. >> in fact, we have light rain over many parts of the bay area right now with live doppler seven, you can see that there are some areas where there's more moderate rainfall, the areas indicated by yellow. and i'll show you the futurecast animation. so the first wave of this generally light. but then after 8:00 is when we'll see the more moderate rainfall, even heavy at times, briefly move through the bay area and then quickly turning into showers early morning, then a little bit of a break for the midday tomorrow. highs will generally be near 60 degrees tomorrow. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so the heaviest rainfall will fall between 11:00 tonight to 3:00 in the morning. but it will be a breezy start. and then it turns into scattered showers through saturday. so you will need the umbrella, but not it's not a washout. the last round of rain mainly comes early sunday morning. we start to dry out sunday afternoon evening in time

25 tomorrow. his birthday present will come in the off season with a very large contract, likely 50 times what he's making now, with the niners playing out the string in their final couple of games. no playoff possibilities. the lingering question is how good purdy really is. his passing numbers are down from a season ago last year, 31 touchdown passes. only 11 picks this year, 17 touchdowns and ten interceptions. obviously, having so many teammates injured, that's played a big part in the diminishing production. with the niners hosting the lions on monday night football here on abc seven, kyle shanahan believes the struggles will actually pay off in the long run. >> he's in a more challenging situation this year. he's got two more weeks of it. i think it's going to end up being really good for him in the long run. i thought he played at such a high level in some situations last year that, you know, some
