embarcadero. you're looking at the bay bridge in the distance there. it's a wet start to your friday. drew is tracking the forecast and what to expect for the weekend ahead. >> plus free furniture. friday. thousands of donated items are up for grabs today. we'll tell you how to get your hands on some of the goods, and how today's event is helping to give back to the community. >> also, the last friday of the year. you can believe that, right? getting ready for 2025 on. >> oh my goodness. can't stop it anyway. >> nope. he sure can. >> and to get ready we have to get ready for this wet commute. yeah. >> and we're finding rain today and through the upcoming weekend. but as you head towards the new year next week, we have some brighter conditions out there. so here's a live look outside. we're looking at sfo this morning. clearly you can see the taxiways. the runway is wet. and if you notice from time to time this camera does shake a bit. so we do have some gusty winds out there first thing this morning. live doppler seven. the heaviest rain is out of here. we had anywhere from a half of an

inch to an inch of rain over the last 12 hours. the steady rain has exited and now we're left over with these isolated light showers not only this morning, but throughout the afternoon. today we do have flood advisories in effect in some areas. and what this means is that we do have standing water on some of our freeways. this morning may be a little hard to see that since it's still dark outside, so good idea. add some extra time to your commute. some gusty winds right now across the city into the east bay and parts of the north bay. winds 25 to 35mph, but they will be weakening as we head into the afternoon on the abc seven storm impact scale. it's a level one for isolated showers. we have those morning gusty winds right now. they back off this afternoon and we still have high surf along our coast. so here's future weather showing you the cloud cover throughout the day. it's muggy out there. you'll notice the humidity. you'll also notice the mild air temperatures today upper 50s, lower 60s. with that chance of an isolated shower so high of 61. in oakland today, 64 in san jose, only 59 in the city, 60 in santa rosa,

about 59 in half moon bay. we'll track those weekend showers coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with sue and see how the commute is going this morning. >> good morning. we've got a lot of minor incidents. hard to keep track of all of them. chp is doing their best standing water and winds are the big deal. system wide bart again with slower speeds due to the wet tracks. and we'll take a look at 880 through oakland. you can see the sheen on the roadway. it is wet here. we don't have any problems going past the coliseum, but we do have some issues. you can see actually on the right hand side of the road there, there looks like some sort of an issue with a stalled on the on the shoulder. again, the standing water starting to fill in on the east shore freeway from el cerrito, through berkeley and on into emeryville, the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. overall green, but road closures are an issue in the north bay from highway 37 north towards 116 on

121, highway 12 near watt and schellville, all under water and closed at this hour. extra caution. >> all right. so we're going to keep our focus on travel. the post-christmas rush home is on at airports across the country. here's a live look this morning at sfo. more than 400 flights were delayed yesterday and 11 were canceled. so far, there are 37 delays this morning. the weather is putting a damper on things, not just locally, but in many places across the country with snow and severe storms. weather also playing a factor on the roads in the sierra. those returning from their holiday celebrations have been dealing with some slow moving traffic. chains are required on highway 50 from twin bridges to meyers and on interstate 80 from truckee to kingvale. you can follow along as the forecast evolves with the abc seven bay area app. it gives you access to the same live doppler seven tools. our weather team uses. we'll also send alerts with important updates. >> this morning we're expecting

to learn more about the santa cruz wharf collapse. the city of santa cruz will hold a press conference at 11:00 today. for now, the pier has been closed indefinitely. 17 stores and restaurants have been shut down since monday, when that 150 foot section of the wharf collapsed into the ocean. as for the santa cruz harbor, boat owners are still reeling from the damage done when high surf rolled in earlier this week. many boats have been damaged, some even completely submerged. here's reporter brooke kinnebrew. >> just like you just want to just stop and just kept battering and battering and waves just kept coming through and tearing people's boats up. it was overwhelming and stressful. >> this is video of the first wave sweeping through the santa cruz harbor monday. several waves crashing into boats, leaving hundreds damaged. and this man without a home. after three months of living on the water docks, started breaking off. >> the second wave, it was just tore everything up. my dock broke apart right away. this is

my boat down here. and from then on, people are just. i was just terrified. >> harbor staff and u.s. coast guard volunteers are cleaning up the mess, pulling in pilings that floated ashore, getting debris and pieces of boats and dock out of the water, and working to get sunken boats to the launch ramp. >> the channel is still hazardous, too. we have a lot of floating debris. things are underwater you can't see. you could run into. so that's why we're really concentrating on trying to get the debris out of the channel first. >> anderson says the harbor is working with the company to map the harbor floor to determine how many boats are underwater. he expects the cleanup and rebuilding process to take a while, saying this incident is comparable to the 2011 tsunami. >> the last three years or so, we've had large swells that have caused significant damage in the harbor, and that's that's something that's it's kind of a new thing, but it's something that we're going to have to prepare for in the future. and it's unfortunately, it's just

going to be the new normal down here. >> and that was brooke kenebrew reporting there. closer to home, members of a mosque in san francisco are raising concerns about anti-muslim incidents. a surveillance camera caught a man tearing pages out of the koran earlier this week. he has a history of harassing, harassing, rather, a mosque members at the islamic center of san francisco. now, this is not the first time a mosque in the city has been targeted this year. in april, another man smashed six windows on a mosque on sutter street with a skateboard. >> we are experiencing a 30 year high in anti-muslim and anti-palestinian racism, and our call is specifically to elected officials and to law enforcement to send a very clear message that hate will not be tolerated in san francisco against any community. >> muslim leaders worry about the increase in islamophobia as the u.s. changes leadership. >> new developments in the death

of a former openai researcher known for being a whistleblower. his parents have now hired an independent investigator to determine his cause of death. that's according to our media partners at the mercury news. back on november 26th, san francisco police found the body of 26 year old suchir balaji in his san francisco apartment after officers were called to do a well-being check. the medical examiner says balaji died by suicide and there are no signs of foul play. but his parents have doubts and have hired an expert to perform an independent autopsy. balaji died just three months after publicly accusing openai of violating u.s. copyright law, while developing chatgpt. his information was expected to play a key part in lawsuits against the company. openai has said all of its work is legal under fair use laws. >> we have an update now to a story we first brought you yesterday morning. a gofundme to help an oakland family who lost a loved one during a christmas

morning fire is now a lot closer to its goal. 37 year old steve weatherford, junior, died rescuing family members from their home in oakland when it burned. fire firefighters say weatherford helped several people out of the home, but was overcome by smoke after he went back into the home one last time to make sure everyone got out. a gofundme to help cover the memorial service and family's financial needs. it's now at nearly $15,000. the goal is just $16,000. if you would like to help out, we have a link to it on our website abc seven news.com. the fundraiser is being organized by neighbors in the community. >> 609 this morning in the accuweather forecast. a live look at the exploratorium camera lit up for the niners game on monday. it's cloudy out there. we have some fine mist and drizzle out there and that's really the theme of the day. it's also quite mild, upper 50s to the lower 60s right now. this time of the morning we should typically be in the 30s and 40s.

so you notice that warm air. you'll also notice it feels very humid out there. what you're looking at are dew points. and this tells you how much moisture is in the atmosphere. and when these numbers are in the mid and upper 50s like they are right now, you can really feel that air when you step outside. it remains muggy all day today and mild throughout the day. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. the heaviest rain is now into the central valley. we're tapering to isolated showers throughout the day today. rainfall totals throughout the next 24 hours, less than a quarter of an inch. so region by region along the coast today. there you can see temperatures pretty steady in the 50s from time to time. a chance of some isolated drizzle. it's just a cloudy day with those highs in the upper 50s around the bay shoreline. it's a similar story will max out in the lower 60s this afternoon. and again, a lot of cloud cover out there. some small chances of some showers moving through your neighborhood, but we'll keep it pretty gray all day today. inland, we'll find those chances low. about a 10% chance of finding an isolated shower in your neighborhood. and those

pick for border czar, is sharing new details about proposed mass deportations. abc news reporter nicole d'antonio has the details. >> good morning. there appears to be a growing rift among republicans when it comes to work visas. meanwhile, we're learning more about how children of undocumented immigrants could soon be deported. this morning, the man president elect trump tapped to be his border czar, sharing in new interviews his plans to deport undocumented families. trump's former acting ice director, tom homan, who oversaw family separations during the first trump term, says in a series of interviews that the administration does not plan on separating families, but instead do something different.

>> they're going to be put in a halfway house. they can be or they can stay at home and wait for the officers to get the travel arrangements and come back and get the family. you know, the best thing to do is for families to self-deport themselves. >> meanwhile, a new battle is brewing over work visas. trump advisers elon musk and vivek ramaswamy are facing off against another trump ally, laura loomer, over support for h-1b visas for foreign workers. as of last night, president elect trump had yet to weigh in on the latest back and forth on h-1b visas. he has restricted them in the past. nicole d'antonio, abc news, washington. >> a local charitable tradition in the east bay got a big upgrade this year. maya anita smith runs the do gooder garage out of her home every holiday season, taking year in donations and distributing them to local organizations and families in need. as part of the lamorinda care collective. many of the brand new items come gift wrapped, and this year she teamed up with a local realtor and began operating out of an empty storefront in lafayette.

>> i invited the community in lamorinda to give, and i was blown away by the response. it's been the best thing i've ever done in my life. >> the storefront opened december the 7th, and even though the holiday season is coming to a close, the collective is not. with all the support they've gotten, smith will keep it open as long as she can, welcoming in families from across lafayette, moraga and orinda. >> in just a few hours, the nonprofit habitat for humanity will host a free furniture friday in oakland. the hope is to clear out some of the warehouse to make room for new donations. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us in studio this morning. and lena, you visited the warehouse yesterday? >> i did. amanda. that's right. and i can tell you it is true when they say they have something in there for everyone. and the goal isn't just to make room for new donations, but they also want more people to know that their shop, restore oakland, is there to serve as a resource for everyone. >> oh no way the sauna is going

morning currently, but the winds do back off heading into the afternoon. so here's future weather 3:00 pm the winds a lot lighter, less than about ten miles per hour in most areas. so we are at a level one today for isolated showers. rainfall less than a quarter of an inch today, so not a lot of rain. morning. gusty winds weaken throughout the afternoon. and then we have that high surf along our coast all day today. so here's future weather. it's muggy out there. it's mild. we keep the cloud cover all day today with that chance of some mist, some drizzle even throughout the evening. now heading into saturday, we'll likely see some scattered showers in the morning. remains pretty cloudy all weekend long, and then saturday night into sunday morning. another push. a final push of moisture. here's 730 sunday morning. this moves through quickly and by the afternoon on sunday, sunshine actually breaks out to finish the weekend. so looking at rainfall totals, not a lot of rain. we do have some standing water out there this morning. be aware of that. for most areas. this is through the entire weekend. we're talking less than a half of an inch so we can

handle that. we'll keep our eyes on any issues in parts of ukiah and clear lake, where we could see more than an inch of rain in some spots. that means next week for the niners game on monday at levi's. a fantastic looking forecast. clear and cool for kickoff. 53 degrees. by the fourth quarter. we're turning pretty cold with temperatures in the mid 40s. so today we keep it cloudy, we keep it humid. we keep it mild upper 50s to the lower 60s with an isolated shower moving through. windy this morning. but the winds back off later on this afternoon. then tonight it stays pretty mild. overnight lows only in the 50s with those isolated showers continuing. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast for the next seven days for you today. we'll track those showers, the gusty winds and the surf. we have some evening rain tomorrow leading to morning rain on sunday, but we'll finish the weekend with sunshine breaking out and that leads to a nice dry pattern. next week we are dry for new year's eve and a sunny start to 2025 on wednesday guys. >> all right drew thank you. now let's turn to greg dutra. he's live with a look at what's coming up on gma. >> hey good morning greg. good

clara county to clear homeless encampments near creeks and rivers is now in effect. the valley water district passed the ordinance last month to clean up 300 miles of waterways. last week, san jose's mayor joined an outreach effort to inform about 1000 people living in encampments of the new rules. san jose is spending $27 million on cleanup and housing for those being displaced. >> they come in different forms. this is safe parking and safe sleeping. prefabricated modular units, converted motels. most of the units will be rooms with a door that locks. >> enforcement of the ordinance won't begin until january 2nd. people living in encampments will have 72 hours to relocate or face a misdemeanor charge with a fine. business is brisk in alameda in an alameda store

this morning. winds out of the southwest at 12mph. so live doppler seven this morning. at best. you're finding some mist and some drizzle out there. the steady rain has exited that occurred the last 24 hours. now, today this picture will look very similar. this afternoon we'll have some mist and drizzle hanging on throughout the day. have a couple of flood advisories in effect in the north bay just for standing water. be aware of that. may be hard to see that early on this morning while it's still dark outside winds are gusty. i mean, between sfo and the city, parts of the north bay 2030 five mile per hour winds so they remain pretty gusty this morning. they do back off later on this afternoon, so we'll be at a level one all day today. the steady rain is out of here. showers are isolated at best. today we have those morning gusty winds that will weaken throughout the day and high surf along the coast. a high surf advisory is in effect. so you look at rainfall chances all day today. they're not significant by any means. and what this means when you have a 20% chance, just some isolated

drizzle to be found throughout the day. so we keep it cloudy today. daytime highs upper 50s lower 60s. it does remain humid all day today. more showers coming this weekend. we'll show you that in seven minutes. let's check in with sue. see how the roads are doing. >> we've got a lot of incidents on the chp. log over 40 right now, and most of them are solo spinouts due to the standing water. a new view of the golden gate bridge toll plaza. we don't usually see this angle, and traffic is very light coming across the span, but fog and wind definitely an issue for the for the waldo grade, as well as the altamont pass and the bay bridge. highway four to san francisco about 37 minutes. still good. no metering lights at the bay bridge. you're getting across just fine. and here is a look. overall, roads are in the green, which is great. flooding in the north bay. highway 121 from 37 up towards 116 and highway 12 up towards westmont and schellville. those lanes are under water and are closed at

this time, so caution advised. >> good advice. we appreciate it. thank you. sue. in just a few hours, the city of santa cruz is going to give an update on monday's wharf collapse. it has been closed indefinitely. meanwhile, pieces are washing up and some of them have a special meaning for families. there were memorial benches on the portion of the wharf that collapsed. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with one family, asking for people to save what they find. >> whenever roberta rodriguez misses her son, she comes to santa cruz, where he loved the water. in 2005, her son david passed away when he was 22 years old. a bench memorializing david sat at the end of the santa cruz wharf, but on monday it was swept away and destroyed when high swells caused the end of the wharf to collapse. that bench was a sacred space. >> it was a great place to just go sit and watch the ocean and think about him and think about

our our life here and how short that was. you know, that we he went home so soon and we just miss him every day. >> the bench was installed nearly 20 years ago. >> for us, it means everything. my son grew up in this area, so he was always crabbing off the pier with the help of friends. >> posts were made on social media to be on the lookout for any pieces that might wash up. >> these guys found the birth date kind. >> strangers found two boards of the bench in separate areas on christmas. one board is inscribed with david's birth date. the other board is inscribed with gone fishing. april 21st, 2005. it was found by a father and daughter. >> of course we love our miss our loved ones during the holiday, so i really see this as a christmas miracle. >> the santa cruz wharf has different benches commemorating lost loved ones. one woman is crediting the reddit community for helping her find the nameplate to her mother's bench that was swept away, as well as

one stranger was putting up fliers. another found the board for rodriguez. a board to her son's bench is still lost at sea. >> we are missing one more piece and it's the top piece that has his name on it. david ramon de anda, aka dave rodriguez, hopes people will keep an eye out for it. >> she's grateful for all the help and compassion she's received this week in santa cruz. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie is making more appointments for leadership roles in his new administration. according to the chronicle, adam phongsavanh will work with the board of supervisors to turn lowery's policy initiatives into legislation. eileen mariano will keep her job as state and federal affairs manager. executive recruiter andre adeyemi will be lowery's director of appointments. e.j. jones will be his director of community affairs. jones ran for district 11 supervisor and was

previously an aide to. supervisor asha safai. allie bondy with planned parenthood of northern california will be his policy advisor. >> the launch date for speed cameras to be implemented around san francisco is being pushed back from february to march. according to the chronicle, electrical, electrical and structural engineering challenges forced this delay. once the cameras are installed, though, drivers will be sent warnings if they drive more than 11mph past the speed limit. in some areas, they'll be ticketed once that one month grace period is over. >> well known civil rights leader reverend jethro moore, the second, also known as jeff moore, has died. moore was the president of the san jose silicon valley naacp and often weighed in on major policing issues. his brother, rodney moore, posted on social media, thanking the community for their support. the cause of jeff moore's death has not been confirmed. he is survived by his wife and two children. he was 65 years old.

>> a federal court of appeals has overturned the rape conviction of former forty-niner dana stubblefield. stubblefield was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of raping a woman who was interviewing for a babysitting job in 2015. the woman said stubblefield held her prisoner, threatening her with a gun. during the trial, prosecutors said police never searched for the gun in stubblefield home because he was a famous black man. the appeals court found that statement was racially discriminatory and violated the racial justice act. >> an anonymous family is helping lafayette save a piece of east bay history. lafayette park theater on golden gate way is a mainstay of the downtown layout and a push for help from the community. one family agreed to match any donation to the theater's renovation project of up to $25,000, but the offer only stands until the new year, so the countdown is on for more funds. >> when they realize that their

media platforms now have to provide mechanisms to report these deepfake videos, and they have to take them down quickly. if you're a victim of doxing when someone posts personal information about you online, like your address or phone number, you can now sue for up to $30,000 in damages. ever heard of a cannabis cafe? you will in 2025. a new law allows cannabis retailers to prepare and sell food and beverages in newly created lounges. that means customers can buy and use cannabis at a business while they eat a meal or watch a live performance. interested in buying pet insurance? providers now need to tell you whether they base their premiums on the age of your pet or where you live, and if their policies exclude certain preexisting conditions. having trouble keeping track of your online subscriptions? service providers have to get clear consent for automatic renewals or continuing service, and they have to send you annual reminders of what you signed up for. the law also

of a house fire in san jose. this is a live look at gemelli way. our crew at the apartment complex say that they see tarps on scene, which would indicate a death or serious injury. we have reached out to the fire department. they have not yet confirmed how many injuries or deaths there could be. we know traffic is stopped in the area. the cause of the fire is under investigation. again, a large fire over at gemelli way in san jose. >> well, here at 647 this morning, the nonprofit habitat for humanity will be hosting a free furniture friday in oakland. the hope is to clear out some of the warehouse to make room for new donations. abc
