mascot, but today we do. and it is the mascot for the pop-tarts bowl. of course, it's a pop tart and they get goofy there. this year they made the whole trophy, a workable toaster. yummy. and they toasted pop-tarts in the broadcast booth. five second rule i think if you grab it and then eat it during the game, flying out of the football, the broadcasters had a couple there. there was a three in game mascots they had at a time, while berry snuck up on the back judge and then the miami mascot, sebastian, trying to take a bite of the hot fudge. but after iowa state won the game, they chose to eat cinnamon roll. so follow your dreams down into the toaster he goes and out he is ready to eat and time to eat a pop tart. players eat them up. how can they top this next year? well, the pop tarts bowl representatives say just you wait. i mean, i love a pop tart. there's no doubt about it. the pop tarts mascot is easily our

toyota. let's go places. player of the day. some goofy football fun today and it is hard to believe really. but exactly 11 months ago today, the 49 ers completed an epic comeback to beat the lions in the nfc championship, advancing to super bowl 58. a lot's happened since then. it's been boom or bust for the niners over the past two plus decades. since 2003, the niners have either missed the playoffs entirely or made at least the nfc championship in every season for the past 22 seasons. no postseason this go around, but pride is a very powerful thing. >> i'm a little bit different in the fact that i'm a little bit off mentally, where i can get myself to a different place, even though we are out of it with the playoffs and everything else. like i can still prepare as if, you know, we were in that situation and trying to give it my all on monday night. >> not where you want to be this time of year. it's different, especially watching where we were at last year against this team, just that feeling of december, january football is a feeling that i've gotten used to. i think we were doing a good job of staying engaged and

j.r. stone, you're looking at the aftermath of a crashng at involving three vehicles, including two police cars, near bart in west oakland. investigators say several people involved in the crash are in the hospital tonight. the crash happened at about 3:00 this afternoon, but it's still unclear what led to the collision. a white suv was also involved in the wreck, but investigators are not saying whether the crash is the result of a pursuit. there's also breaking news out of south korea. right now, rescuers are searching through the wreckage of a plane on the runway at a south korean airport. a passenger plane burst into flames after skidding off of a runway. this is video just into our newsroom. the plane slammed into a concrete fence when its front landing gear apparently failed to deploy. at least 47 people are confirmed dead.

investigators say 181 passengers and crew members were on board. the plane belonged to jeju airlines. so far, emergency workers have pulled two people out of the wreckage, one passenger and one crew member. our other big story right now, the high surf advisory in effect for the coast. spencer christian joins us now with your accuweather forecast. >> okay j.r. we're talking about potentially dangerously high surf. rough surf. here's a look at the high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. we're talking about wave heights that may reach 15 to about 25ft which is very very high. obviously these are dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. and there may be some beach erosion as well. now there's more stormy weather coming our way as well. a level one storm today on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, and tomorrow it will be a level one as well during the overnight hours. we're talking about just spotty light showers, but going into the early morning, we'll see this system ramp up to more widespread rain. steadier rain and some gusty wind from time to time. and that, of course,

multiple sources point to potential russian involvement. abc news reporter ines de la cuetara has the latest as investigators comb through the crash site where the passenger plane went down. >> a stunning statement from the kremlin today. russian president vladimir putin apologizing butnt not taking responsibility for the crash. the azerbaijan plane crashed in kazakhstan christmas day. experts from around the world have been pointing fingers at russia, blaming russia's anti-aircraft defense systems for damaging the plane. russia has been locked in aerial combat in the area in its almost three year long war with ukraine. but while putin apologized for what he called a tragic incident in russian airspace, he did not accept blame for the crash. the head of russia's aviation agency blaming ukraine, saying the situation in the grozny airport area was rather complicated on that day. and at those hours, ukrainian drones were conducting terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure. lieutenant colonel fredrik koga was a ballistics expert on the investigation that determined malaysian airlines flight mh17 was shot down by russian forces

in ukraine in 2014. >> if you look in detail to the punctures, these are all inwards oriented punctures, meaning that something from the outside went inside. so this is not the typical damage that you see simply due to an aircraft crash. >> 38 people were killed in the crash, including 13 year old muhammad ali yanov. his funeral today in baku, the capital of azerbaijan. he had been traveling alone to visit his mother in grozny, russia. miraculously, 29 people survived, some able to walk away from the wreckage, others in the hospital now speaking out. vafa shabanova saying about 20 or 30 minutes after takeoff she felt two explosions. a crew member says he heard three thuds above grozny and noticed he was injured. he says in the left arm, i don't know what touched me. i just looked and saw blood. but the conversation cut short, he says. i have to turn my phone off. they're not allowing me to speak. several airlines, including those from azerbaijan, dubai

and israel's main carrier el al, have now suspended flights to russia. ines de la cuetara abc news, london. >> no word yet on who is holding the mega millions lottery ticket worth more than $1 billion. but the ows of the store that sold it are ready to cash in. the winning ticket was bought at a convenience store in cottonwood, a remote area just south of redding. the owners will get a $1 million retail bonus for selling the winning ticket. >> there was uncertainty, and so it was like, did we really sell it? you know, how much do you think we're going to get? i would say there was a little bit of nervousness, too, for some reason, but a lot of overwhelming excitement. >> yeah. very exciting. the owners wrote on the store's facebook page, quote, here's to dreams coming true. and to the wonderful people who make cottonwood so special. one thing you can expect not to see in the sky over some cities this new year's eve.

it's developing a cell phone app that will allow migrants to warn relatives and local consulates if they think they are about to be detained by u.s. immigration. the move is in response to president elect donald trump's threats of mass deportations after he takes office. the app has been rolled out for small scale testing, according to mexico's secretary of foreign affairs. it sends an alert to notifying two previously chosen relatives in the nearest mexican consulate. mexico says its beefed up staff to help migrants facing deportation. the app is scheduled to be rolled out next month. holiday drone shows have been rising in popularity, but this year some are being

canceled. after that mishap in florida that left a seven year old boy badly hurt. abc's ike ejiochi has details. >> as we're preparing to say goodbye to 2024 this morning, cities across the country saying so long to drone shows an annual midnight run on new year's eve in new york's central park is no longer having a drone show. organizers releasing a statement saying unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, we will no longer be staging our planned drone show during the race. cities in florida and texas are also canceling shows, the fa telling us it has suspended the waiver granted to sky elements drones as it investigates last week's incident, a disaster that left the boy hospitalized last saturday at lake eola park in orlando. oh, no, i don't think they're supposed to be falling. just watch as the drones can be seen plummeting to the ground. the lights on, the flying machines illuminating its dangerous trajectory into helpless onlookers. seven year
