officers, following a serious crash that involved two bart patrol vehicles and a medical supply vehicle. the collision happened at seventh and mandela parkway, which is right in front of the west oakland station. the extent of all of the injuries is still unknown. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to witnesses. >> a multiple vehicle crash involving bart police blocked the intersection of mandela parkway near the west oakland bart station late saturday afternoon. >> it was like a big erupted noise, like it sounded like a skirt. and then you heard a boom like denise green and her mom saw the accident from their apartment. >> green says people from her building rushed out to see what happened and to help. green says she saw a police officer crawl out of his car. >> he brought a stretcher to. they had, like three ambulances and then a tiny ambulance right there to the people on the stretcher. >> did they look like they were passengers in the car or the police officer? >> there was one police officer that i know for sure because i

saw him come out the car, but the other two i don't know. >> bart and bart police did not return requests for comment. >> mandela's three vehicles involved two bart pd. >> but in an email to abc seven news, oakland police did confirm that two bart police patrol vehicles were involved. the oakland fire department, which also responded to the accident, says three officers were taken to the hospital. a fourth person who was in the medical supply vehicle was also hospitalized. >> people got to slow down when they drive in west oakland. >> igor duncan is another witness. residents say this is a busy intersection and that drivers often speed through yellow lights. duncan saw the crash from the bart platform. >> i was in the bart station at the time, heard a very loud noise, saw it from the top. there were two cars, one police car, and the car that hit him had run into the bus stop here and collided with the pillars. >> police don't know if alcohol or drugs were a factor in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news. >> thanks so much. developing

news. now in south korea, the death toll is rising with now at least 120 people killed after a passenger jet crashed and burst into flames. it happened at nine this morning, local time, as the jet was landing at the muan international airport in the southwest part of the country. officials say the plane went off the runway, hit a wall and went up in flames. 181 people, including six crew members, were aboard the boeing 737 800 aircraft. the cause of the crash is under investigation. to the south bay, now where a suspect was arrested for manufacturing and selling ghost guns. ghost guns are homemade firearms that do not have a serial number and therefore cannot be traced. police in san jose say detectives discovered a social media account in late october that was being used to buy and sell illegal guns. the suspect was also importing high capacity magazines from florida and nevada to sell in san jose.

we're going to turn now to the weather, and we did get a little break from the rain late today, but that looks to be changing. tomorrow, spencer christian is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. okay j.r. >> it will be changing overnight. as a matter of fact, we're talking about a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale during the overnight hours. we'll see scattered showers developing. then early tomorrow morning we'll get more widespread rain, heavier rain and gusty wind. and of course, rough, dangerous surf. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight. notice just a few showers developing in the north bay around 2 a.m. or so, but between 4 a.m. and about 9 a.m. every part of the bay area is going to get a good soaking from this system. it will be pretty wet and gust. wind will accompany that rainfall before the storm moves out of here in the early afternoon hours. rainfall totals will range generally between a quarter of an inch and a half inch. wetter conditions in the farther northern reaches of the bay area. let's talk about this high surf advisory, which will be in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. breakers breaking waves will reach heights of 15 to 25ft. and of course,

that means dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and probably some beach erosion. i'll have more on that and the complete seven day forecast a little bit later. j.r. >> look forward to that spencer. that high surf advisory is impacting beaches from santa cruz north to bodega bay. it coms after a week of powerful wavesms and dangerous surf in the bay area. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a warning from first responders. >> surf's up at fort point under the golden gate bridge. way up. >> it's been big. a lot of power in the water. huge swell came uh- a few days before christmas. >> surfer jesse moreno was debating about getting wet, but matt schneider was all in. what was it like out there? >> what? out there? yeah, this is just the inside. it's not that big. i mean, it's nothing like out there, but it's fun. it's high tide. it just feels good. feels good to get wet. >> reporter a high surf advisory for the coast is coming with a friendly warning with swells this high. the fire department says the safest way to

experience all of this is from a distance. >> but we're asking this weekend during the high surf warning. don't make us come and get you. >> san francisco fire department captain justin shaw says waves are breaking between 15 and 25ft near ocean beach. >> just looking at the sheer power of the ocean behind us. it's cold, it's rainy, it's slippery. we're asking folks to just please stay away from the waterline. >> that didn't stop some swimmers from braving the cold water. we even caught this wakeboarder in the bay being pulled by a boat. >> but it just looks pretty cool. but to me, it's just dangerous. period. >> tourist ama torres says she and her kids are staying away from the water and possible sneaker waves. >> we don't. we're not going to have that problem. we are very scared of the water. we stay away from the water. >> on monday, a portion of the santa cruz wharf collapsed during high surf, sending three city workers into the water. all were safely rescued. as big waves continue to break, first responders are urging safety and common sense.

>> we want folks to be making good decisions based on good information. >> in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> here's a live look now from san francisco international airport. people are still on the move to and from their holiday destinations, and the weather continues to be a problem, but mainly in other parts of the country. there are more than 250 delays and nearly 20 cancellations today at sfo. driving is easy going to and from the sierra tonight. the conditions aren't bad out there despite high winds around the mountain peaks for now. both interstate 80 and highway 50 are open, and there are no chain requirements in place. that could change tomorrow with another storm on the way. you can follow along as the forecast evolves with the abc seven. bay area app gives you access to the same live doppler seven that our weather team uses. will also send alerts with important updates. we've talked a lot about human bird flu cases, but the virus is also impacting

pets. cats and dogs are getting it, and in many instances it's fatal. so what can you do to protect your companion and is it safe to adopt one? abc seven news reporter tara campbell went to a local shelter to get some answers, and these are set up also in case we will unfortunately have any bird flu. >> amid intensifying concerns over the spread of bird flu. efforts are underway at marin humane to protect both animals and people. >> we have our staff on sort of medium to high alert, not quite the high alert yet here they do everything from taking in surrendered pets to sending crews out into the field. because we have animal service officers out investigating complaints and cruelty and reports, we have to be really careful about taking in birds, any sort of foul animal, any sort of wildlife handling, meaning precautionary measures are already in place, making sure they use protective clothing and protective gear when handling birds wildlife,

bringing them in their concerns also reaching beyond the birds as far as the cats go, because that's now a concern, is we definitely monitor the health and well-being of all animals while they're under our care. >> this week in oregon, a house cat died from the disease after eating pet food that tested positive for bird flu, prompting the portland based company to issue a nationwide voluntary recall. >> we do have many reports of cats bird flu, predominantly from raw food sources, so milk as well as raw meats. >> the medical experts encouraging people to keep their cats away from a raw diet and to consider keeping them indoors for now, and be on the lookout for symptoms of the virus. >> clinical signs we're looking at would be loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, severe depression, runny nose, gunk in the eyes, respiratory signs, and lastly, neurologic signs. >> meanwhile, back at marin

attendees lit the menorah and enjoyed live music. uh- donuts. the fire department even showered the crowd in uh, in chocolates that look like coins that are given to children during the holiday. happening tomorrow, the community of oakland will be celebrating the fifth night of hanukkah with a new menorah at lake merritt. this 15 foot menorah replaces the one that was vandalized last year and then tossed into the lake. donations helped fund the new one. it was purchased by the chabad center of oakland. tomorrow's hanukkah celebration at lake merritt starts at 4:30 p.m. in the east bay today, 2500. holiday meals went out to homeless encampments and transitional housing projects throughout emeryville, oakland and berkeley. it's an annual event organized by the emeryville citizens assistance program, or ipac. volunteers spent the day distributing hot meals, clothing, dog food and even flowers to celebrate

right now we're looking at calm conditions around the bay area, especially the winds, very light, generally ten miles per hour or lower. so it's not breezy out there yet and it's much warmer than at this time last night. the 24 hour temperature change shows it's basically about 3 to 5 degrees warmer in most bay area locations than at this time last night, and skies are partly cloudy to partly cloudy to clear. it's 59 degrees in san francisco right now, 60 in oakland, 59 in hayward, 61 san jose and 55 apiece in redwood city and half moon bay. a clear view from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero. 57 in santa rosa right now. mid 50s at petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord, 59 degrees and 56 at livermore. let's talk about this approaching or developing storm. it's a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. so through midday tomorrow, starting with the overnight hours, we'll see scattered showers during the early overnight hours, but then rainy and gusty conditions by mid-morning on sunday, continuing into the afternoon. and rough surf is developing with this storm as well. here's the forecast animation starting at midnight. notice between midnight and about 2 a.m. we'll see showers developing

in the north bay mainly becoming more widespread. but then after 2 a.m, between four and about 9 a.m, we'll see a surge of widespread and heavier rain that will drench or dampen all parts of the bay area going into the mid morning hours, and by 1 or 2 in the afternoon it will be pretty much over and skies will start to become at least partly clear. rainfall totals from this system will generally range between a quarter of an inch and a half inch, but it will be wetter up north at yountville, which will receive about 7/10 of an inch over 9/10 at clear lake and over an inch and a half at ukiah. so you can see the north bay. it will be the wettest as it has been the last day or so region of the bay area, and we have a high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. breaking waves will reach heights of 15 to 25ft. of course, that means dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and possibly beach erosion. and with all that saturated soil in the north bay, we have a flood watch. not a warning, but a watch in effect through tomorrow morning for the three north bay counties. saturated soil, rapid runoff. there could be some localized flooding on creeks, streams, small

l russia's vladimir putin is apologizing today for that deadly passenger plane crash in kazakhstan, but not taking responsibility. the cause is not yet determined, but multiple sources point to potential russian involvement. abc news reporter inés de la cuetara has the latest. >> as investigators comb through the crash site where the passenger plane went down, a stunning statement from the kremlin today. russian president vladimir putin apologizing but not taking responsibility for the crash. the azerbaijan plane crashed in kazakhstan christmas day. experts from around the world have been pointing fingers at russia, blaming russia's anti-aircraft defense systems for damaging the plane. russia has been locked in aerial combat in the area in its almost three year long war with ukraine. but while putin apologized for what he called a tragic incident in russian airspace, he did not accept blame for the crash. the head of russia's aviation agency blaming ukraine, saying the situation in the grozny airport area was rather complicated

on that day. and at those hours, ukrainian drones were conducting terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure. lieutenant colonel fredrik koga was a ballistics expert on the investigation that determined malaysian airlines flight mh17 was shot down by russian forces in ukraine in 2014. >> if you look in detail to the punctures, these are all inwards oriented punctures, meaning that something from the outside went inside. so this is not the typical damage that you see simply due to an aircraft crash. >> 38 people were killed in the crash, including 13 year old mohammad ali yanov. his funeral today in baku, the capital of azerbaijan. he had been traveling alone to visit his mother in grozny, russia. miraculously, 29 people survived, some able to walk away from the wreckage, others in the hospital now speaking out. vafa shabanova saying about 20 or 30 minutes after takeoff she felt two explosions. a crew member says he heard three thuds above grozny and noticed he was

injured. he says in the left arm, i don't know what touched me. i just looked and saw blood. but the conversation cut short, he says. i have to turn my phone off. they're not allowing me to speak. several airlines, including those from azerbaijan, dubai and israel's main carrier el al, have now suspended flights to russia. ines de la cuetara abc news, london. >> in florida today, three firefighters and 12 train passengers were injured when a bright line train crashed into a fire truck in delray beach, north of fort lauderdale. fortunately, nobody was killed. it happened around 1045 eastern time this morning. according to delray beach fire rescue, the truck was en route to a call when the crash happened. authorities are investigating whether the crossing gates were working at the time of the collision. the new year will bring out a lot of new faces to san francisco, in addition to a new mayor, san francisco is also getting four new members on the board of supervisors. current board president aaron peskin is

i've been very interested in making government function. i've let them know that i'm around for advice, free advice. i'm not looking for a job with the administration, but i'm here as a resource. >> despite his loss, peskin says he's leaving city hall with his head held high, pointing to other progressive wins on the ballot like his proposition to create an inspector general's office for the city. peskin also backed the winning prop e to evaluate the commissions in san francisco. it was an alternative pitch to the heavily funded prop d, which would have slashed commissions down to 65 total and give the mayor more power. what do you think the message is from voters about the state of san francisco? >> i think san francisco voters are remarkably smart. they're very well informed. they still embrace san francisco traditional progressive values at their base, and they actually buy incredible numbers, rejected a lot of the very conservative

pushes that were on the ballot. >> going forward, peskin plans to rally progressive groups to combat what he calls special interests. that put millions into san francisco's november election. >> $62 million was spent on the outcome of supervisors and mayor's races, and ballot measures that could have been spent on all sorts of public good businesses to succeed and to thrive in san francisco. but i don't want them to use their influence in a way that benefits them at the cost of the san francisco taxpayer. >> abc seven news insider phil matier says the heartbeat of the progressive movement in the city may be slowing down. >> it's a pretty nuts and bolts economic survival feeling in the city, and not one that has a lot of room for ideology. we'll have to see how the progressives go with the donald trump in the white house. however, the progressives will be raising their voices. the question is, are people listening now? >> while this chapter in public office might be over, peskin is still committed to public

at this slate. we've got the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. storm building overnight will bring. it's a level one storm through midday tomorrow. it will bring a scattered showers during the early overnight hours just after midnight. rainy and gusty conditions through much of the morning. and rough, dangerous surf. here's the forecast animation showing by £0.02 2 a.m. rather, we'll see showers moving through the north bay by 4 a.m. widespread heavier showers that will then swing through the remainder of the bay area, giving all of us a little bit of a drenching and it will be accompanied by strong, gusty winds, by the way, but we'll get clearing at least partial clearing by mid-afternoon tomorrow. rainfall totals anywhere from a quarter of an inch to about a half inch for most of the bay area, and we have a high surf advisory in effect until 4 a.m. this storm is whipping up waves that will reach heights of 15 to 25ft. dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. don't forget monday night football here on abc seven. this monday evening it will be the giants. the 40 niners taking on. that would be quite a game right. the 40 niners taking on the lions at levi's stadium. it will be clear and it will be crisp. and here's the accuweather seven day
