that's popular in the tech industry and causing a rift among republicans. abc seven news starts now. >> from abc seven live breaking news. >> we begin with that breaking news, the passing of jimmy carter at the age of 100. the carter center says he died peacefully today at his home in plains, georgia, surrounded by family. thanks for joining us on this busy evening. i'm j.r. stone carter lived longer than any other u.s. president and was a celebrated champion of human rights. abc news reporter karen travers has a look at his remarkable life. >> when americans elected jimmy carter the 39th president of the united states, it was a vote for something new. >> so help me god. congratulations. >> james earl carter was born in plains, georgia, october 1st, 1924. in 1946, he graduated near the top of his class at the u.s. naval academy. married rosalynn

smith and served in the nation's developing nuclear submarine program. he returned to georgia to run the family business, a peanut farm, and launched a political career that took him from the local school board to the governor's mansion. >> jimmy carter do solemnly swear. >> then, in 1976. >> my name is jimmy carter, and i'm running for president. >> carter defeated gerald ford in a race for the oval office. carter's single term was marked by a lagging economy and a nationwide energy shortage. inflation climbed to 15% in 1980, and carter's approval rating plunged. he blamed the nation's problems on what he called a malaise in the american spirit. >> it is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. >> internationally, president carter was influential in efforts to make peace in the middle east, encouraging a treaty between israel and egypt with the camp david accords. but the event that seemed to doom his presidency was the taking of 52 american hostages at the u.s. embassy in iran. they were held for 444 days. released just

hours after carter left office. yet carter launched a post-presidency that many would consider more productive than his four years in office. in 1981, he established the carter center, sponsoring programs to promote human rights in the third world and monitoring elections in developing democracies. the former president and his wife volunteered their time and energy building low income housing for habitat for humanity. in 1997, carter was asked about his legacy. >> i would hope that that uh- 50 years from now, whatever that people would associate the words peace and human rights with my name. >> it was this work that in 1999 earned him the presidential medal of freedom, and in 2002 the nobel peace prize, leaving many americans remembering him best for his achievements after the white house. karen travers, abc news. >> abc seven weather anchor spencer christian has known jimmy carter since the late 1980s. spencer, our condolences go out to you tonight. >> thank you.

>> jerry, you first met him on good morning america. describe how you met jimmy carter. >> it was during the 1988 democratic national convention. gma sent me there to interview the former president on the grounds of the carter presidential library. so i'm out there setting up with the cameraman early in the morning, and he was an avid runner in those days. he was out there running around the grounds with the secret service guy, and he comes right up to where we're setting up, and he goes, hi, spencer. i'm jimmy carter. as if i needed an introduction. and then the next words out of his mouth were, the carter family really appreciates how kind you were to billy when you interviewed him years ago. billy carter, being jimmy carter's younger brother, whom i interviewed eight years before i met the former president and had made a lot of headlines. he had made a lot of headlines for his naughty behavior, which some people thought embarrassed the president. but many people in the media tried to treat billy carter like a clown. when i interviewed him, i tried to let the man maintain his dignity and just reveal who he was. and the carter family really, really appreciated that. >> you've known him for many years. when you talk about jimmy

carter, you really light up. what is it that really appeals to you or appeals to you over the years about jimmy carter? >> you know, i think it's the sincere commitment that he and rosalynn carter, mrs. carter, had to serving humankind. i mean, they devoted their entire lives, certainly post-presidency, to building homes for habitat, for humanity, for to eradicating disease in the most impoverished nations, vaccinating babies and just trying to lift up the, the theme of human dignity for all. >> and that wasn't the only time you talked with jimmy over the years. jimmy carter, that is, you emceed. what is it? the 75th birthday? >> yeah, his 75th birthday celebration in americus, georgia. that was 1999. and then his 95th birthday celebration. this photo right here is from the 70. >> they called you back in 2019. >> they did. and this is from the 95th birthday celebration, which was a joint celebration of his 95th, 95th birthday and mrs. carter's 92nd birthday. >> you said it was special to

see those two together. >> oh my gosh, they were. they not only loved each other, they were truly in love even at that advanced age. and they were always holding hands as they were walking together. and he was giving her a little kiss on the cheek. and one of my fondest memories is the two of them were at an atlanta braves game, you know, at a baseball game, and they have the kiss cam. and he was about 9092 at that time, and they realized they were on camera. and he leaned over and gave her a big kiss, a big smooch. and it was so cute. >> you know, that special. thank you so much. all right, jimmy, condolences to you. thank you. today, speaker emerita nancy pelosi is responding to the passing of jimmy carter. in a statement, she said, quote, as president, his work to restore integrity to the political arena during a difficult chapter in our history was a testament to his firm faith in the sanctity of the public good, which he always placed above his own. we also caught up with san mateo environmentalist robert coughlin. today. he worked in the environmental protection agency under carter's administration.

coughlin says he met carter years earlier, when he wasarter trying to stop a dam from being built on the stanislaus river. after that, carter told him he was thinking about running for president and then took him back to the airport the next day. >> and he said, can i call you again? i said, sure, i'll stick with you until you lose. well, i'll stick with him forever. he's a wonderful man. >> coughlin described carter as someone who was honest, compassionate, intelligent and strong. we'll have a closer look at jimmy carter's life and legacy. you can watch jimmy carter a full life. a special edition of 2020 here on abc seven tonight, starting at 10 p.m. moving along now. a fast moving stm swept through the bay area today, dumping a lot of rain, causing flooding in parts of the north bay. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us much of the rain had nowhere to go because the ground is so saturated. >> an overnight storm drenching the north bay where the ground is already waterlogged. some

vineyards in the russian river valley are under water. flooding from a swollen creek inundating mark west station and star roads in windsor with more than a foot of water closing both roads to traffic because it's too dangerous to drive through. this intersection has flooded before, during past storms and as you can see, it's done it again. looking more like a river. it has been a very wet month. santa rosa fire marshal paul lowenthal says it's no wonder why creeks and streams are rising fast. >> that's why we're seeing a lot of those relatively quickly issued flood watches, flood advisories for the national weather service just because of how saturated the soils are. following the back to back storms we received this year that we do typically now get those rapid rises in streams and creeks with the rainfall that we receive. >> rain making for some dangerous driving causing spinouts like this one in santa rosa and in the east bay. moraga police say slick roads may have contributed to this crash on saint mary's road, where a driver lost control hitting this roadside. luckily, nobody hurt.

in walnut creek, rain water was running off and umbrellas were up across town. >> we're trying to put away before the next rain. >> rain bringing challenges for vendors and shoppers at the sunday farmers market in sebastopol. thank goodness for tents. >> i've been here holding down the tent at times. uh- the coffee tent always becomes kind of a social. people come on in because it's pouring rain, so i can barely move in here at times because people are hanging out and getting out of the rain. >> there's no doubt rain is a welcome end of the year gift insurance for the future. >> the reservoirs are all full and that's that's what counts. >> so as the storm passed through, check it out. this rainbow stuck around in the north bay. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> east bay a gas leak forced evacuations in san leandro. p-g-and-e's says 12,000 people were forced from their homes around 630 this morning. in the area that you see here, washington avenue and lewelling

boulevard. their evacuation and that evacuation order was lifted at 930 this morning. there was an emergency shelter at the marina community center, and neighbors say it quickly reached capacity. p-g-and-e's says a gas transmission line was leaking and crews are investigating what caused it. still no word from investigators on the cause of a crash involving two bart patrol vehicles and a medical supply vehicle in oakland. the crash happened yesterday afternoon at seventh and mandela parkway, right in front of the west oakland bart station. three bart police officers and one other person are recovering from injuries. all four had to be taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is still unknown. one witness says she saw a police officer crawl out of his crashed car. >> they had like three ambulances and then a tiny ambulance right there to the people on the stretcher. >> do they look like they were passengers in the car or the police officer? >> there was one police officer that i know for sure because i saw him come out the car.

h-1b visa program. >> you shouldn't have lower skilled things that could be done by american workers. you shouldn't have that kind of category in the united states. it shouldn't be for accountants or entry level it jobs. it should really be for exceptional talent. and we can have that balance. and i hope president trump actually looks at that bipartisan bill that would reform this. >> tech companies use the program to hire thousands each year. president elect donald

trump previously opposed the program but voiced support yesterday after tech billionaire elon musk posted in favor of it. many maga supporters who want to see more restrictions on immigration are opposed to the visa program. happening tomorrow, the forty-niners host the detroit lions on monday night football. today, crews were working to keep today's rain from soaking the turf at levi's stadium. you see those large tarps covering the field right there? 40 niners fans heading to tomorrow's game are advised to give themselves extra time to get to levi's stadium. heavy traffic and delays are expected on major roads around levi's. a stretch of tasman drive will be closed beginning at 130 tomorrow morning. vta will be running additional service for fans. stadium parking will open at 1:45 p.m. pregame festivities tomorrow include fireworks and a military jet flyover. watch that game right here on abc seven. coverage starts at 5 p.m, followed by after the game with larry beil and cal

for clear weather, right? yes. we might deliver on that. >> here's a look at what's happening right now. skies are getting clearer as the rain we had earlier today is moving out of here. as you can see on the satellite radar composite image. and it had been quite gusty earlier today. the winds are a bit lighter right now, although still breezy, with wind speeds up to about 15 16mph in the breezier spots, and it's getting a lot cooler. the 24 hour temperature change shows us about 5 to 8 degrees chillier right now in most bay area locations than yesterday at this time. here's a view looking across the embarcadero. current temperatures 54 in san francisco. mid to upper 50s at oakland, hayward, san jose 59 and mid 50s at redwood city and half moon bay. looking out over clear, calm conditions in emeryville 53 right now up north in santa rosa, petaluma down to 50, as is fairfield, and we have 53 at napa and concord, 51 at livermore. let's take a look at our forecast animation starting at 7 p.m. notice the clouds continue to move out. skies get clearer and clearer. and as that happens, of course temperatures will be dropping during the overnight hours. in fact, we

have a frost advisory that will be in effect from 10:00 tonight to 9:00 tomorrow morning for all of the bay area, basically, except the city of san francisco and the peninsula coastline, temperatures will drop as low as 32 degrees. frost, of course, can kill or damage tender plants and crops can also cause problems with uncovered outdoor pipes, so overnight lows will drop down to about 32. in santa rosa, 31 at lakeport, 34 up north at ukiah. many other inland locations will be in the mid to upper 30s and low 40s around the bay shoreline. highs tomorrow. only in the mid 50s for almost all of the bay area, so it will be bright, but it will be chilly tomorrow. then tomorrow night, monday night football right here on abc seven at levi's stadium. it will be the 40 niners taking on the detroit lions. kickoff at 515 will be clear and a bit crisp at that hour. about 53 degrees dropping down to mid 40s by the fourth quarter. so if you're going to that game you may want to bundle up. you may want to bundle up no

matter where you are tomorrow night. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. looks like dry conditions for new year's eve. excuse me another cold start to the day though. it will be even colder tuesday morning than tomorrow morning. wednesday bright start to 2025. and then as we get later into the week, we'll see increasing clouds gradually getting milder though temperatures finally moving back into the low 60s in our inland areas. >> so when the nfl schedule was released back in the spring, what was the first thing that yours truly looked for? i was wondering, when do the niners play on abc seven? it turns out we had the season opener at levi's against the jets bacn september 9th, and then tomorrow it's going to be the home finale against the detroit lions. nothing like monday night football. brock purdy and the niners dominant back in that 3219 week one win over aaron rodgers and the jets. since then, though, a lot of injuries and too many fourth quarter collapses, meaning no postseason this go around tomorrow, though. one final opportunity this season in front of the faithful and brock is more than ready for it.
