the winner with 272 electoral votes. james earl carter jr. took an oath of office as jimmy. >> i, jimmy carter, will solemnly swear that i will faithfully execute the office of president of the united states. the office of the president of united states. on inauguration day he and first lady, rosalynn carter left their limo and walked. >> this is more like the present in the old days. he pushed for human rights and foreign policy in one of his biggest achievements in the white house's historic peace agreement between israel and egypt, which still stands today. but stateside, his presidency was a challenge rising inflation and gas lines as long as the eye can see. issues he tried to address in an infamous speech where he blamed some of the country's problems on the crisis of the spirit, a speech critics say spelled the end of his success as a president. >> it is a crisis that strikes at the heart and soul and spirit of our national world. >> after a rainy and militants

took hostages in tehran, the president seemed powerless. american rescue mission failed. then after 444 days with americans following every detail, the iranians finally released the americans, but it was on the day that jimmy carter left the white house. our cameras were with him the final hours as their release was a reality. right on, that is great. that is great. >> i think that was the happiest day that i ever had not just laying down the presidency, which i did not want to do, but just knowing the hostages were free. >> he was 56 years old when he left the white house unsure of the future. >> we didn't know what we would do the rest of our lives, and we took on projects no one else wanted to do. >> instead of avoiding the spotlight, president carter and his wife stepped right into it in a different way. they worked for habitat for humanity building homes for

the poor and through the carter center, they traveled the world helping nations and disease and monitor foreign elections. his work promoting human rights won him a nobel peace prize in 2002. >> we can choose to alleviate suffering, and we can choose to work together for peace. no matter how far he traveled, his home was his farm in plains, and carter talked about spending more time there as he slowed down. in august 2015, he shared with the world he had cancer, melanoma, that it spread to his liver and brain. >> i have had a wonderful life. i have had thousands of friends, and i've had an exciting and adventurous and gratifying existence. but now i feel that it is in the hands of god whom i worship. and i am prepared for anything that comes. >> suddenly, the lines grew in plains, georgia, where carter for decades continued to teach

sunday school. >> then within months, the former president had beaten the odds announcing he was cancer free and through it all, he would tell anyone the best thing that ever happened to him was marrying his wife, rosalynn, in 1946. >> when i first had a date with her, the next morning i told my mother, that is the girl i want to marry. >> they were married 77 year until rosalynn's death in 2023. >> there is no doubt in my mind i love her her because we have been through so many things together. >> life with jimmy carter has been an adventure. >> overnight, president biden spoke of remembering his dear friend. >> millions of people all over the world, all over the world feel they lost a friend as well even though they never met him. that is because jimmy carter lived a life measured not by words but by deeds. >> president-elect trump did everything in his power to improve the lives of all

americans. for that we all owe him a debt of gratitude. former president barack obama wrote that carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, in-service. from former president george w. bush he was loyal to his family, community, country and from the clintons he worked tirelessly for a better, fairer world. this was a president best known for what he did after he left the oval office. for the lives he touched across the world in the love he shared at home that guided him. >> make a full life even more full. >> i think so. it has been the best part of my life since i left the white house, but i've been gratified and honored and pleased and excited to be the president of a great country. >> president jimmy carter was 100 years-old. >> the family, the u.s. military and the people here at the carter center are still working on funeral arrangements here

investigation. >> this morning, u.s. federal officials joining the investigation into the horrific airplane crash. the boeing 737 with 181 passengers and crew on board seen here skidding down the runway on its belly without landing gear and engine along the tarmac before crashing into a concrete wall. the aircraft exploding and parts of the plane engulfed in planes and thick smoke. 179 killed including five children as young as three years old. two people miraculously surviving, a male crew member receiving treatment in the icu and female member recovering. investigators retrieving the damage black boxes but the recorder was intact. south korean officials say around 9:00 a.m. local time, the flight arriving from bangkok with a warning of a bird strike. 2 minutes later, a mayday call and the plane makes unusual quick 180-degree turn crashing moments later.

>> a carrier with impeccable safety record. the airline ceo vowing an apology and distraught family members gathering as the lives lost read outloud. the daughter was on board. >> he said, "she was almost home." boeing releasing a statement saying, "we extend our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones. our thoughts remain with the passengers and crew." >> so much agony and frustration among those who have lost loved ones. south korea and seven days of national mourning canceling new year's countdown out of respect for those who died, will. >> thank you, britt, tragic and not the only incident over the weekend and two other incidents saturday. this video shows air canada express flight on its side hosed down by firefighters in halifax, nova scotia, after the plane had landing gear problem on touchdown. the crew and 73 passengers got out safely and in norway, a klm

737 after a crowd heard a noise after a takeoff from oslo and the plane landed and tore up and veered off the runway at low speed. there were no injuries there. well, let's bring in abc news contributor, colonel steve ganyard. there is a lot to talk about, good morning, and thank you for being here. let's talk about that south korean crash because authorities pointing to the bird strike. we know 5 minutes, we lost the flight radar data 5 minutes before they landed and then crashed. what does that tell you? did the pilots have enough time to deploy the landing gear? >> gio, when you look at mishaps, there are clues that would point us to an idea what might have happened. there is nothing we see in the video that tells us what might have happened. we did see a video that appears to show they ingested a bird in the right engine. we don't know what other birds might have hit the aircraft or

damage to the aircraft. we don't know why they landed with the gear up and it goes by the camera and you see the slats and flaps are up. it landed fast. it touched down the runway. why was it going so fast when they had almost 2 miles of runway to touch down earlier? so many mysteries, gio, nothing makes sense. >> steve, all of these big questions, how much are the black boxes going to shed light on answers? >> rebecca, everything is getting answered by the black boxes. again, the video doesn't tell us anything but raises more questions. they will want to read out the black boxes very quickly to make sure it is not systemic to the 787, but nothing points to the 787 being the problem. >> these other incidents this weekend, steve, canada and norway, what can you tell us about those? >> there is no superstition with pilots that this tends to occur in threes, but no correlation

between the three mishaps. the one in canada, an airplane with known landing gear problems for a long time. if you see that fire confined to the engine so people on board were not in significant danger. the klm incident, it should have been handled better but dribbled off into the grass. the other incidents were not serious, but it was an incident that would be the real problem and figure out why that actually happened. >> of course, 179 families waiting on answers from the korean incident. your heart goes out to them. steve, thank you for the information this morning and covering this with us. okay, the weather put a damper on traditional new year's eve ball drop in times square where security is suspected to be tight. senior investigative correspondent, aaron katersky, with the security preparations, and there is rain in the air this morning. >> there is rain, but it will not dampen anything because

administration is investigating. the incident. we remember actress, linda levitt from tony winner to tv star during a long career and probably best remembered for a golden globe winning awards that working-class waitress sitcom, "alice" and worked steadily on the screen most recently on the show, "no good deed" and lisa kudrow and upcoming mid cen she had a short battle with lung cancer and she was 87. a lot more ahead including monty, that giant schnauzer, the "best in show" at the afc championship is here and that is coming up. >> we are looking forward to that, will. we turn to the top story of the death of former president, jimmy carter. after he left office, carter did not retire, but he got to work from humanitarianism fighting for peace and global health all winning a nobel peace prize. robin has more on his extraordinary legacy.

>> i, jimmy carter, solemnly swear... >> he was the 39th president of the united states serving only one term. >> how much do you think what a second term would look like? >> looking back on it, i wouldn't change it. the life we have had for 35 years, carter has opened up a new center to serve 80 countries in the world. so much of the legacy president jimmy carter leaves behind from the 43 years after his time in the white house. >> you have now engaged in public service outside of the presidency longer than any other american president. how do you view on what you could do and the power that position over time? >> well, when i left the white house, of course, i was fairly young for survivors of the white house, 56, we didn't know what we would do the rest of our lives. we decided to take on projects no one else wanted to do. >> his long and blissful marriage with his wife,

rosalynn, lasting 77 years. the couple, an example of love and support, rosalynn, serving as an advisor to her husband. >> i think we developed a mutual respect. we can come home at night and i want to know what he's doing and it's an exciting moment. together with his wife, president carter focused so much on helping others. [applause] building homes for those in need. speaking against injustice. >> the number one abuse of human rights on earth is strangely not addressed quite often is abuse of women and girls. >> working to eradicate disease. >> i think this will be of a great achievement not for me but the people who inflicted and the entire world to see diseases like this eradicated. >> president jimmy carter leading by example and paving a path for subsequent presidents

on life beyond the walls of the oval office. >> when historians write the paragraph on jimmy carter a hundred years from now, what do you want to be at the top of the list? >> may be peace and human rights. i kept the country peaceful for four years and promoted peace for other people. >> a remarkable life and thanks to robin for that story. we are joined now by abc news presidential historian, mark updegrove. mark, thank you for being with us. we have talked about this extraordinary life. you met jimmy carter on multiple occasions. what stood out most to you about the man? >> rebecca, he was so down to earth and so acceptable and -- accessible and someone you could talk to easily despite the fact he was our 39th president and someone you can engage with easily. but also somebody deeply devoted to making the world a better place both as a public servant

and as governor, senator from georgia and governor from georgia and of course the 39th president of the united states but also has a private citizen where he spent 44 years of his 100 years as a former president, the longest post-presidency in american history. that is where he made his mark as a humanitarian and as a philanthropist. somebody who truly did make the world a better place. >> it is remarkable to see overnight all of the tributes pouring in. it seems to be one of the few things that can unite washington at a moment like this here to you posted recently a picture you and your wife meeting with the carters about a decade ago. what did he say then about what he wanted his legacy to be? of. >> you know, we visited the carters a number of times at their house in plains and went to church on a sunday and went to see him teach sunday school at the baptist church, his

church. we went back to the carter house a modest ranch-style home they built in 1961 that didn't change much and they moved back to plains after he left the white house in 1981 character they showed us around. we were going to have lunch, we didn't end up getting to lunch because we talk so long so naturally the carters practice a -- packed us a lunch putting in recycled paper bag and sent us on our way to atlanta. a wonderful visit one of many we had with the president and former first lady overtime. >> i think i might have seen that little paper bag in the photo that you posted on his 100th birthday. what should his legacy be? how should we remember the president, jimmy carter? >> you know, i think exactly what he told george stephanopoulos in that clip you played a moment ago, rebecca, and what he told me a number of occasions. he wanted to be remembered for peacemaking and human rights. of course, he is only former

of 77 years, rosalynn. steve osunsami is back with an enduring bond, steve, good morning. >> good morning to you. we were there very last television interview three years ago. the way the former president marched into the room was inspiring. he was early and wanted to get started right away. we sat down with a former president and the former first lady and didn't talk about politics or world events but instead of, we talked about their love for each other and how it was empowering them to this world and into the next. >> throughout his life, president jimmy carter loved sharing that marrying his wife was the greatest and most wonderful decision. they are love story began in the farming community of plains, georgia. she was the girl next door. he came home from college and asked rosalynn smith out to the movies and the worlds were never the same. they married in 1946 and started a family a year later. and jimmy carter entered the public life, he worked

"the god of the woods" by liz moore and so much fun to read. i thought i would love it as a suspense thriller and i love it 13-year-old girl who goes missing during a sleep away camp that her family actually owns let's get this, her brother went missing from the place 14 years earlier. spooky, suspenseful and i cannot recommend this when i math. -- this one enough. >> we will move down to "love in the air is filled with." this is for the summer by abby and a "good morning america" book club pick and it is about a guy who feels like he has cursed because he breaks up and immediately move on to find the love of their life spiritual and a girl who has the same curse meets on reddit and decide whether to date for the summer and move on to point soulmates but things start to go awry when maybe they developed feelings for each other.
