the bay area connection. overnight, a man drove a pickup truck through bourbon street in new orleans, killing 15 people and wounding dozens more. hours later, someone drove a cyber truck to the trump hotel in las vegas, where it exploded. both of the vehicles were rented through the same app. now the app is called turo and the headquarters are in san francisco. today, abc7 news went by the offices on new montgomery street, and turo is like the vehicle version of airbnb. car owners list their vehicles for rent. they're. authorities say a driver rented a tesla cybertruck in colorado and drove it to las vegas, where it exploded into a fireball outside the trump hotel. that vehicle was loaded with fireworks. the driver was killed and seven bystanders suffered minor injuries. investigators say they have not found any clear connection to isis or the possible terrorist attack in new orleans. now, the pickup truck used in the new

orleans attack was also rented through turo. the fbi is studying videos. the suspect appears to have recorded while driving from texas to louisiana. law enforcement sources say he's heard talking about isis. he also talks about his divorce and a desire to kill members of his family, before ultimately deciding to carry out the attack on bourbon street. abc news reporter christiane cordero has the very latest. >> new orleans famed bourbon street now a crime scene as the fbi investigates what they are calling a terror attack on new year's day. federal officials identifying the suspect as 42 year old shamsuddin jabar, a u.s. born citizen from texas and an army veteran. >> he also served in the army reserve until a few years ago. the fbi also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis expressing a desire to kill. >> police say he rammed a rented pickup truck into a crowd of

people on bourbon street just after 3 a.m, driving three blocks before crashing, then getting out and firing at police with an assault rifle. officials say two officers were hurt before police shot and killed the suspect. witnesses described the scene as gruesome. >> what we saw was insanity. i mean something out of a movie, the graphic nature of it. and it was unbelievable. >> investigators say they found an isis flag, weapons and improvised explosive devices inside the truck. they're now working to determine whether he had any affiliations with terrorist organizations. the fbi says they also discovered more ieds planted around the area in the historic french quarter, some of which were deemed viable, according to sources. officials also questioned about whether barricades were up along bourbon street. >> this particular terrorist drove around onto the sidewalk and got around the hardened hard

target where he did have a car there. we had barriers there, we had officers there, and they still got around. >> leading up to the holidays, federal law enforcement agencies had been warning local police around the country that vehicle ramming was a top area of concern and to be prepared for these kinds of incidents. christiane cordero, abc news, new orleans. >> we are monitoring this incident very closely and will bring you the very latest on the attack at abc seven news.com and on our abc seven bay area app. the san francisco police department is asking people to remain vigilant attending public events. the city is working to expand entertainment zones like the one in new orleans, where today's attack happened. abc seven news reporter monica madden digs into how law enforcement can prepare and respond to these types of attacks. >> a new state law allows cities to open up entertainment zones, areas where people can walknes, around with to-go drinks similar to what you see on bourbon street. so as san francisco looks to expand these zones,

safety is top of mind. there's always a balance when it comes to fun and safety, which is paramount as san francisco looks to breathe back life into downtown through entertainment zones. and after a deadly new year's attack on new orleans famed bourbon street, public safety leaders nationwide are asking how tragedies like this can be thwarted. law enforcement experts say there are ways to prepare for what's known as soft threats, danger that may not be immediately apparent. >> pre-planning and collaboration with other agencies and departments really make a big difference. >> doctor roy taylor has more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement positions. what does it look like in preparation to have law enforcement ready to respond to a situation like that as quickly as possible? >> anytime a human who is willing to give up their life for their cause is interested in, you know, committing some type of crime like this, it's very difficult to limit every

possible conceivable access. so i don't think there's ever a perfect plan. >> while there are limitations, taylor says coordination amongst law enforcement agencies and physical barriers can help. >> vehicles are easily acquired. they're easy to use as a weapon of mass destruction. so in planning, we have to make sure that we have enough bollards or some type of barricade that they're not able to circumvent them. >> the city's new entertainment zone at chase center is already bolstered by barriers, but the other one, on front street in the financial district doesn't have the same. at least for now. and some local leaders say they like the idea of adding more physical barriers bigger than these ones, if they're going to permanently close a road to traffic. and there's always the issue of emergency vehicles having access as well. in san francisco, monica madden, abc seven news. >> an arrest today in san francisco's first homicide of the year. it all happened in the

mission at the gas and shop on van ness and 17th street. the victim was shot several times just before 1230 this morning and died at the scene. the shooter got away in an suv. police say the investigation is ongoing, but a 29 year old man was arrested and charged in that death. oakland saw its first murder of 2025. just hours after midnight. and it all capped a violent 24 hour period in which four people were killed. it all comes as oakland was marking one of the lowest murder rates in years in 2024. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has a closer look at the crime spike. >> on monday, oakland's leaders were praising the drop in the city's homicide rate, now at a five year low. >> a 34% decrease in the number of homicides to date. a 33% decline in firearms related shootings. >> then came the four fatalities. just since tuesday morning. >> what that says to me is that we, as a community, have a long way to go.

>> wanda johnson held her annual vigil to mark the killing of her son, oscar grant, at the hands of bart police officer johannes mehserle in 2009. her work since includes trying to mend the relationship between the black community and law enforcement, something advocates say is working. >> we've been able to help them improve some of their systems, some of their internal accountability systems, some of their police processes and their policies. so i think the short answer is yes. >> but when it comes to the issue of community violence, johnson says more needs to be done. >> we're still seeing people losing their lives senselessly, and it's up to us to come together as a community and work to bring a healing to, especially our young men. >> oakland police say the first fatal shooting was 7 a.m. tuesday in the 1300 block of 14th street. 12 hours later, a man was stabbed to death in the 1900 block of 70th avenue. around 10:15 p.m, a shooting incident near jack london square left one dead and three hospitalized. then came the

first fatality of 2025, a shooting about 3 a.m. in the 2400 block of 24th avenue. >> people were feeling optimistic that the homicide rates had significantly gone down. >> jorge galvez is with the organization communities united for restorative youth justice. he says that optimism comes from the proven success of violence prevention programs like ceasefire, which is attributed as the cause of the drop in oakland's homicides. >> i think we're going to have to harness on that energy that we had 16 years ago, and we're going to have to continue to resist, to affirm that the human dignity of black and brown people here in this nation. >> oakland police were not available for comment in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. >> new at six the investigation into a fire at a single family home in san jose. that fire broke out in the front yard of the house on schaff avenue. a mother and her adult son were able to escape before that fire spread. it took 30 firefighters about 20 minutes to bring it under control. they had to cut

bridge and the six other state owned bridges. that's all of them locally except the golden gate. tolls will continue to go up $0.50 every year until 2030. now, public transit is also getting pricier. bart fares went up today 5.5%. that's about $0.25 extra on an average fare. muni is costing riders $0.25 more as well. the regular fare is now two. 75. now the new year also ushers in new laws. we compiled an extensive list on new california laws at our web site, and you can check it all out at abc7 news.com. we're just a week away from inauguration day in san francisco on january 8th. daniel lurie will be sworn in as the city's 46th mayor. lurie will be sworn in at city hall and will then take the festivities to chinatown. inauguration events include a night market on grand avenue and an outdoor concert. lurie will also attend a banquet in his honor, hosted by a group of chinatown organizations.

president elect donald trump's inauguration on january 20th could be the most expensive ever. contributions to trump's second inauguration have surpassed $150 million, and that is more than double biden's inauguration. ceos from amazon, meta, uber and ford have all pledged $1 million each. flags on inauguration day will be at half staff to honor former president jimmy carter, who died a few days ago. and fencing has already been put up around the capitol as a security measure before january 6th. vote certification travel just got a bit easier in eastern europe. romania and bulgaria have become full members of the european union's borderless travel zone, known as the schengen zone. the area now encompasses 25 of the 27 eu member states, excluding cyprus and ireland. it also covers switzerland, norway, iceland and liechtenstein. the

schengen zone is the largest area of free movement in the world. that is, according to the commission. getting a check now of your new year whether spencer is standing by. maybe it will feel like a, i don't know, sweden or something in the bay area. >> well, it sort of felt chilly today. we could have been in a scandinavian type weather pattern today. here's a look at what's going on around the bay area right now on the satellite radar composite image. we've got moisture in the atmosphere traveling through the north bay mainly. we're not talking about significant rainfall, but there are little patches of drizzle developing over there. meanwhile, the wind is very calm all across the bay area, as you can see, and the 24 hour temperature change shows lots of spots south and east of the golden gate. a degree or two warmer than at this time yesterday, but way up north. ukiah. santa rosa. both cooler than at this time last night. here's the view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco. 53 degrees here in the city right now. and but 52, 53, 54 all of these locations. oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city, half moon bay, a rather uniform range of temperatures. nice

view from mount tam, looking down onto the bay and on to san francisco, 50 degrees up north at santa rosa and petaluma. santa rosa and napa. rather petaluma at 46 degrees, 49 at fairfield and 51 at peace at concord and livermore. now the view from emeryville. looking across the bay. these are our forecast headlines overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning, there will be some patchy fog developing in parts of the north bay. then overnight tomorrow night into friday morning, light rain and showers will develop in the north bay and then swing through other parts of the bay area. but the weekend outlook calls for sunnier and drier weather after that rain on friday. let's take a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale at the storm coming in on friday. it's a level one storm, a storm of light intensity producing showers for the most part, but there will be some isolated downpours as well. rainfall totals generally will be under a half inch, but we may see some higher totals up in the north bay, which will be a little bit wetter than other parts of the bay area. forecast animation starting tomorrow night at 8:00. notice how the clouds thicken and the first drops of rain start to fall early friday morning up around

cloverdale down to santa rosa. then, between 5 a.m. and about 10 a.m, rain spreads to all parts of the north bay and then south of the golden gate as well down to san francisco, the peninsula, santa cruz mountains, and some over to the east bay. afternoon hours it will be mainly east bay and south bay event, and then by early evening, 6 p.m. or so, it should be just about all over. on friday, rainfall totals by friday night 11:00, generally under a half inch, but a little bit wetter in some parts of the north bay. so now for tonight. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid 40s. quite a bit milder than last night. and tomorrow's highs will be milder than today with generally low to mid 60s just about across the entire bay area, some upper 60s in the south bay. in fact san jose and morgan hill. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. there's that light rain and shower activity on friday. going into saturday. drier and sunnier but cooler with daytime highs only in the mid to upper 50s, but it starts to get slightly milder on sunday and we have a little bit of a warming trend early next week, with
