cases a bay area car rental app. >> do i think it's a coincidence? i don't know. but what i can tell you is we're absolutely investigating any connectivity to what happened in new orleans. >> team coverage of these deadly new year's eve attacks, starting right now on abc seven news at 11. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now. >> tonight, new orleans iconic bourbon street sits empty. no revelers, only police cars blocking off the spot where a driver's rampage took 15 lives. the fbi is carrying out searches in multiple states as it investigates this terror attack. and in las vegas, another act of violence carried out with a car. new video just into our newsroom within the last 20 minutes shows investigators towing away the tesla cybertruck that exploded outside the trump hotel tonight. law enforcement are asking whether that was terrorism to. good evening, and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. lots to get to tonight. but we begin with new video showing the

seconds before the carnage on new orleans bourbon street. a warning some may find it difficult to watch. security cameras captured the crowds and the energy just after 3 a.m. as people celebrated the new year. then you see their crowd scatter as that truck barrels through the street after running down multiple people. police say the driver got out of the truck and opened fire on police officers who killed him. tonight, we're beginning to learn the names of the 15 victims. families of five of the people killed are sharing their stories tonight. from an 18 year old aspiring nurse to a former football star, to a single mom and a father of two. we'll undoubtedly learn more of their stories in the days to come. we do have team coverage from new orleans and las vegas for you. abc news reporter christiane cordero has the latest now m bourbon street. the latest now m >> tonight, one of america's most vibrant streets is shut down. instead of festivities, police vehicles and crime tape mark bourbon street in new

orleans, where driver, believed to be 42 year old shamsudin jabar, rammed a pickup truck into a new year's day crowd just after 3 a.m, dozens are injured and among the dead, 27 year old nicole perez. her friend tells abc news nicole leaves behind a four year old son. >> she was a great mother. she had just been promoted to the manager position at the store. she was so excited about the new position. she didn't have a car, she didn't have a lot of things, but she used to walk to work and she made sure even if it was raining, she'd get to work. >> federal officials say jabar is a us born citizen from texas and an army veteran who worked at the accounting and consulting firm deloitte. >> the fbi also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis expressing a desire to kill. >> the driver drove three blocks before crashing, then got out and fired at police with an

assault rifle, according to officials. they add two officers were hurt before police shot and killed the suspect. witnesses described the scene as gruesome. >> what we saw was insanity. i mean something out of a movie, the graphic nature of it. and it was unbelievable. >> investigators say they found an isis flag, weapons and improvised explosive devices inside the truck. they're now working to determine whether he had any affiliations with terrorist organizations. >> we do not believe that jabar was solely responsible. we are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates. >> officials also questioned about whether barricades were up along bourbon street. tonight's sugar bowl game between notre dame and georgia will now be played tomorrow at 4 p.m. eastern. christiane cordero, abc news, new orleans. >> tonight we are hearing from people from the bay area who were in new orleans when that attack happened. abc seven news reporter j.r stone joins us live

in studio and j.r. the good news in all of this is that the people you spoke with weren't hurt. but as you can imagine, they were shaken. >> certainly the marine firefighter i spoke with, dion, actually said he had wanted to stay out in the french quarter a little longer, but they opted to go back to the hotel. and in the end, that could have been a life saving decision. not a soul in sight on new orleans bourbon street wednesday night, just outside of the crime scene area that is still closed off. aarea picture taken by marin county firefighter john begala, who is staying in new orleans in an area near the attack, heard a tremendous amount of sirens. >> but personally, i attributed that to, you know, new orleans french quarter on new year's eve. and my first thought was there might be a big, large fire somewhere in the neighborhood. >> that, though, is not the case. begala, who is in town for a firefighter union convention, found out when he woke up that a man mowed down people in a pickup truck, fired shots into a crowd, and eventually opened fire on officers, all in an area

where john had been just hours before. >> we worked our way back at about 115 or so in the morning and cut straight through. within about a block and a half of where the incident first took place. i think as firefighters, the first thing for us is you feel a little guilt in the fact that we weren't involved, you know, i mean, it's knowing that there was that many injured folks out there, you know, all of us would have preferred that had we known. so we could have at least maybe helped out a little bit in the initial moments. >> these are pictures that john took on wednesday. in them you can see some of the corner trucks on scene. he says there is still a massive area closed off to the public, and the silence is unsettling. >> it was dead quiet. i mean, you couldn't hear anything, which is so unlike new orleans, especially on a holiday weekend, you know, during a holiday. i think the saddest part is watching the actual community here right now. this place was so joyful, so excited last night to bring in the new year. just

everybody having fun. i mean, this town was due to be, you know, completely packed this entire week. and now the heart of the city has just been carved out. >> you heard about it a little earlier. among those sugar bowl crowds were some local families. i spoke with the notre dame tight end cooper flanagan's mother, a few hours ago. flanagan is from the bay area. she told me that her family members were not out when this happened. she did say that some fans and family members of players are leaving before the game, which was delayed a day and will take place tomorrow because they have to get back to work. so dion, this attack has really impacted everybody. >> yeah so many lives. j.r. thanks to you. now san francisco and san jose police departments both say they have no indications of threats locally. however san jose pd says out of an abundance of caution, it is deploying what it calls extra high visibility patrols. governor newsom's press office says the state threat assessment center is on heightened alert and, quote, closely coordinating

and sharing information with local law enforcement agencies. this is despite no credible threats directed at california events. hours after the violence in new orleans, another explosion rocked las vegas. tonight, investigators are trying to determine whether a tesla cybertruck bursting into flames outside the trump hotel was an act of terrorism. the driver of the truck is dead, and seven others hurt. federal sources tell abc news the fbi is searching locations in colorado springs where that car was rented from. reporter tim caputo is in las vegas tonight as police search for a motive. >> the tesla cybertruck exploded just 15 seconds after parking in front of the trump international hotel in las vegas this morning. the driver killed in the blast.. this was no accident, according to authorities, who showed pictures of the burned out truck filled with fireworks, gas cans and other fuel. >> i don't know how they were ignited. clearly, with what you see in there, something set them off, but i don't know what it was yet.

>> still many unknowns tonight, including the motive and the identity of the driver who rented the cybertruck in colorado on monday and then drove it here. it was rented via the turo app, where you can rent cars from individual car owners, just like the pickup truck used in the deadly terror attack in new orleans. also this morning, same app, same day. but police say it's just likely a coincidence and federal agents aren't quick to call this explosion an act of terrorism. >> i know everybody is interested in that word and trying to see if we can say, hey, this is a terrorist attack. that is our goal, and that's what we're trying to do. we have a ton of resources dedicated to this right now. >> incredibly, no one else was seriously hurt. even the person on the right side of your screen standing with their luggage literally feet away from the blast. the cybertruck actually absorbed much of the explosion and sent the debris up instead of out. check out the glass doors and windows on the trump tower entrance. none was shattered in the explosion. the hundreds of guests staying here all moved to other hotels as the investigation gets underway. >> those people were great. they took care of all the people that were displaced from the hotel. >> we spoke with one couple

visiting from louisiana who picked up their car at the valet at that exact spot, less than 15 minutes before the blast. they say seeing videos like this is surreal. >> i've used that word in every text message to family and friends that might have been worried about us, that it was just surreal, that i couldn't put it any better than that. we're very thankful that we weren't. i'm glad that i didn't take an extra ten minutes to fix my hair this morning. >> it's a good 12 hour drive from where the truck was rented in colorado springs to here in las vegas, and you would have to charge that cybertruck multiple times on the way from there to here. and the driver apparently did. and there are cameras at those charging locations. tesla and elon musk quickly providing the video to investigators, getting them one step closer to figuring out an identity and eventually a motive in las vegas. tim caputo, abc seven news. >> now, as you just heard, the cybertruck in las vegas and the pickup truck used in the new orleans attack were both rented on the turo app. the san francisco based company issued a statement saying their team is working with investigators so

far. turo leadership does not believe either renter had a criminal background that would have raised red flags. turo is considered a peer to peer car rental app, meaning a person can rent out their privately owned vehicles. warriors head coach steve kerr has long been outspoken in the aftermath of violent attacks, like today's incidents in new orleans and las vegas. he started his press conference today by offering his condolences to the victims. >> to all the victims and family members, you know, we're all thinking about everybody with the warriors and just a devastating day for our country. and we're we're horrified and saddened and thinking about everybody. >> we are, of course, staying on top of all of the new information coming in about the tragedy in new orleans and the las vegas explosion. you can head to abc seven news.com or the abc seven bay area app for the latest updates. 24 over seven. a bizarre traffic stop

swirling among health leaders back and forth over the impact of alcohol on your health coming as many people give it up for the month as dry january begins. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez looks at the bay area's growing sober culture. >> happy new year. >> happy new year. there's no alcohol in these beverages. yvonne cannon is the owner and executive chef of poland. turiya in los gatos is seeing an uptick in mocktail orders. >> there's so much more out there that you can actually make, you know, rum and coke or a gin and tonic or a margarita. >> cannon's once owned a bottle shop full of nonalcoholic spirits. she sees the nonalcoholic industry growing for people who are choosing to either not drink or take a break from it. >> typically, during the year, i'll take a week or two weeks or however long that you know my soul can handle not having a cocktail. i'm sure everyone understands that. >> the national academies of

sciences, engineering, and medicine studies the relationship between alcohol and health outcomes. their most recent report says that drinking moderately may have health benefits, but several other recent studies have shown that consuming alcohol could raise your risk of certain types of cancer. we spoke with doctor keith humphreys, professor of psychiatry at stanford. >> there's a split right now, you know, between how the us and europe looks at this. more and more in europe, you hear you know, the general health advice is there's no safe level of drinking. in america, it's a little more debated. >> dry january is a popular movement. humphreys says people should take an experimental approach to it. >> taking a month off can't hurt. it gives you a chance to kind of think about what is the role of this in my life. do i feel better or worse day to day? and you know, there's always february. >> back at portland area that tastes just like champagne, candice and her staff will welcome customers back in the new year on friday with alcoholic and nonalcoholic options to sip on. >> you're still enjoying time

out with your friends or family or coworkers, and not having to deal with the stigma of not drinking. >> she will be participating in dry january except for her birthday this weekend. >> not my fault that my birthday is in january in the south bay. >> lauren martinez abc seven news. >> a spider monkey found during a traffic stop in the central valley is moving to the oakland zoo. the animal was seized monday when a chp officer pulled over the driver of a rolls royce in madera county. he's accused of speeding, dui and drug possession. the madera county animal shelter posted video of the monkey. isn't it cute? writing he is safely in the hands of the department of fish and wildlife, which is arranging for transport to the oakland zoo. heavenly lake tahoe has reopened the lift that malfunctioned last week, sending five skiers to the hospital. it all happened at the heavenly mountain resort on the nevada side, and it appears that one of the chairlifts slid back into another chairlift as it was

going up the mountain. in a message today, heavenly said the lift has undergone a thorough inspection and the u.s. forest service cleared it to reopen. an earthquake rattled the north bay tonight. the 4.7 magnitude quake hit lake county just after 630 or so. the quake was centered at about ten miles southwest of clear lake, and the santa rosa fire department reported shaking in that area. the usgs shake alert system was activated for the first time in 2025. there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. the bay area was busy on this new year's day. there were festivities for the last full night of hanukkah and plenty of new year's traditions as well. from polar plunges and creative ice skating costumes to lighting the final candle on the menorah. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows us the festivities to kick off 2025. >> reporter the sights and sounds of new year's day in san francisco. >> the winner is baywatch from

nights, but still pretty chilly to me. here's a look at the satellite radar composite image. you can see some moisture in the air pushing through the north bay. it's not producing any significant rainfall, but there have been some little sprinkles and spots of drizzle. so let's move along. take a look at the remainder of the weather elements, whether the wind is very calm right now. wind speeds at five miles per hour or down to zero. the 24 hour temperature change shows most locations just a couple of degrees warmer right now than last night, which dion pointed out. she's our human thermometer and looking out over san francisco now from sutro tower, 50 degrees here in the city. 48 in oakland. we've got 50 at hayward and san jose, mid 40s at redwood city and half moon bay. the view from mount tam, a clear view looking down onto the bay. and san francisco 49 up north at santa rosa, mid 40s at petaluma, napa, concord and livermore. fairfield at 47 degrees. and these are our forecast headlines overnight into early tomorrow morning. we'll see patches of fog developing mainly in the north bay. then overnight tomorrow night into friday we'll see

light rain and showers developing a level one storm system. the weekend outlook sunnier and drier air. here's the accuweather, the accuweather, the abc seven exclusive storm impact scale. this approaching system is a level one storm for friday. showers. isolated downpours. rainfall totals for most areas under a half inch. and here's the forecast animation starting tomorrow night at 8:00 by about 2 to 330 friday morning, we'll see the first showers moving into the north bay, spreading rapidly across all of the north bay by about six 6:30 a.m, then rapidly southward and eastward to other parts of the bay area in the early and mid afternoon hours. by about five 530 friday afternoon, it will be all over. rainfall totals will be generally under half an inch, but maybe a little bit more in some of the wetter locations in the far northern reaches of the bay area tonight. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid 40s. highs tomorrow on the mild side. mid 60s. dionne will like that after the chill that we've been experiencing lately. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast once again on friday. sort of a rainy day with rain and showers and
