do have an off ramp out of commission. this one is eastbound 237, the north first off ramp. due to an accident there not affecting. >> 237 of course, we're going to start this morning in new orleans, where bourbn street remains a crime scene after a driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd celebrating the new year. this was just over 24 hours ago. >> 15 people have been confirmed dead, dozens more are injured. and the sugar bowl, which was originally scheduled to be played last night at the superdome, will instead happen today. >> abc news reporter christiane cordero is live in new orleans with what we know about the investigation and the details emerging about the suspect. christiane. >> hey there, reggie and amanda. so between the sugar bowl and the new year, there was so much to celebrate here in the french quarter as there often is. but this morning, the streets are closed. this morning, police vehicles and crime scene tape mark where new year's day celebrations came to an end.

just after 3 a.m. wednesday. investigators are combing through evidence trying to figure out how the driver of this pickup truck caused so much carnage, and why police have identified the suspect as 42 year old shamsuddin jabar, a us born citizen from texas and an army veteran. >> the fbi also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by isis expressing a desire to kill. >> officials say they found an isis flag, weapons and improvised explosive devices inside the truck, which was rented. they're now working to determine whether jabar was affiliated with any terrorist organizations. the driver drove three blocks before crashing, then got out and fired at police with an assault rifle, according to officials. two officers were injured. the suspect is now dead. dozens of people total were injured. among those killed, 27 year old nicole perez, who leaves behind a four year old son, tiger beck, also

27, a former princeton football player, and 37 year old reggie hunter, a father of two in new orleans to celebrate the new year with his cousin. >> to just go out and have fun and you are murdered for no reason by someone that you don't know, someone that you've never done anything to, never seen before, no justifications. no nothing. >> the sugar bowl game between georgia and notre dame at the superdome was scheduled to take place hours later, but organizers decided pushing it back to today was the best course of action. louisiana senator bill cassidy urged the game should go on, adding we must live our lives and those responsible for the attack can't win. so throughout much of the morning, it has been eerily quiet in this french quarter that's usually vibrant 24 hours a day. but within the past couple of hours, we have seen trash trucks, street sweepers and power washers up and down bourbon street, which is right over my shoulder, suggesting that they plan to open it

potentially as soon as sometime today. >> guys, back to you. all right, christiane, thank you so much. now, among those in the crowds of the new orleans tragedy were some bay area families. abc seven reporter lena howland. she's live in studio this morning with the story of these unharmed but shaken people. lena. amanda. >> that's right. we talked to a marin county firefighter who happened to be in town for a firefighter union convention. he told us he wanted to stay out in the french quarter a little longer on new year's eve, but instead, they opted to go back to the hotel, which could have been a life saving decision. firefighter john aguilar took these photos in new orleans yesterday, showing not a soul in sight on new orleans bourbon street, just outside of the crime scene area that is still closed off. aguilar remembers hearing a tremendous amount of sirens. once back at the hotel, but at the time, he thought it was just a large fire somewhere out in the neighborhood. it wasn't until he woke up when he found out a man mowed down

people in a pickup truck, fired shots into the crowd, and eventually opened fire on officers. >> we worked our way back at about 115 or so in the morning and cut straight through. within about a block and a half where the incident first took place. i think as firefighters, the first thing for us is you feel a little guilt in the fact that we weren't involved, you know, i mean, it's knowing that there was that many injured folks out there, you know, all of us would have preferred that had we known. so we could have at least maybe helped out a little bit in the initial moments. >> and here are a few other photos aguilar took from the scene. in them you can see some of the coroner trucks on scene. he says there is still a massive area closed off to the public and the silence is unsettling. another local thai, we spoke with the notre dame tight end cooper flanagan's mother, who is from the bay area. they were out there for the sugar bowl, which got pushed back for today. but she says luckily their family members were not out when this happened. she did say that some fans and family members of

players are leaving before the game happens, because they have to get back to work. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news lena. >> thank you. california officials are on heightened alert following the deadly attack in new orleans. governor newsom's press office says the state threat assessment center is coordinating and sharing information with local law enforcement agencies. the post adds there are no credible threats directed at events happening here in california, but urges the public to stay vigilant. >> san francisco police are also asking us all to remain vigilant at public events. what happened in new orleans is top of mind for officials as they look to expand entertainment zones in the city. right now, there are two sanctioned zones that are similar to bourbon street one along front street and the other at thrive city outside chase center. the area around the arena was designed to increase with increased security, including barriers to block vehicles. front street, though, is less secure since it is usually open to cars. doctor roy taylor has more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement,

and he says planning is key. >> vehicles are easily acquired. they're easy to use as a weapon of mass destruction. so in planning, we have to make sure that we have enough bollards or some type of barricade that they're not able to circumvent them. >> doctor taylor also says cooperation with other law enforcement agencies makes a big difference in stopping violence before it happens. we are, of course, staying on top of all the new information coming in about the tragedy in new orleans. and we'll bring you the latest online at abc seven news.com or on the abc seven bay area app. >> breaking news overnight out of queens, new york, where a mass shooting last night outside a nightclub injured ten people. police say 3 or 4 men walked up and started shooting, then jumped into a car and took off. no one has been arrested. obviously, there are concerns if this event is tied to terrorism. police say it is not. they think that this is gang related. >> a year after a 20% rate

increase sent utility bills soaring, there's some news from p-g-and-e's that might make you feel a bit relieved, p-g-and-e's tells the chronicle. bills will only be slightly higher, slightly higher this month compared to last january. less than a dollar more on average. p-g-and-e's customers pay some of the highest rates in the country. they have gone up 118% in the past decade. the issue has become a top priority in sacramento. governor newsom ordered state regulators to look into p-g-and-e's spending and make recommendations to reduce the impact on customers. those recommendations are expected to be released this month. >> time now 510 in the accuweather forecast. we're looking live outside. this is our san jose camera. you can see san jose mineta international in the background. and we do have a quiet morning out there, temperatures mainly starting out in the 40s. but this afternoon is going to feel very nice. it's the warmest day of the week. we'll get those temperatures into the 60s for most of us later on today. currently 46, in san jose. great

tahoe has reopened the lift that malfunctioned last week. the incident sent five skiers to the hospital. it happened at the heavenly mountain resort on the nevada side. it appears one of the chairlifts slid back into another as it was going up the mountain. and a message yesterday, heavenly said the lift has undergone a thorough inspection, and the u.s. forest service cleared it to reopen. >> it's one of the country's oldest new year celebrations, and it was held again in southern california yesterday. the 136th edition of the rose parade in pasadena. walk down the fiddle and you get down the boat. >> kick off your shoes and you throw them on the floor. >> that is country singer timothy wayne, one of the many performers along the parade route. this year, there were nearly 40 floats covered with about 18 million roses. the rose parade dates back to 1890. one spectator says her family has been going for decades. >> this is our spot. we make a

the way there. i'm not seeing any slowdowns, and it looks like it may be cleared out of lanes, but we will definitely keep our eye on that. overall, we're green. green is great in the traffic world. some minor slowing up and over the altamont pass. and we did have the first north first off ramp from 237 eastbound shut down with an accident. >> thank you sue. now we take a live look at bourbon street in new orleans, which remains a crime scene this morning after yesterday's deadly truck attack, 15 peoe were killed and dozens more were hurt after a driver rammed into a crowd of people celebrating the new year. the driver was killed in a shootout with police. a witness tells gma he and his wife were on bourbon street when the attack happened, and the truck missed them by just a few feet. >> we were we were in the middle of the street. the truck was coming right towards us, but luckily we did see it and hear it quickly enough to get ourselves out of the street. but

back to the hotel right around 1:15 a.m, which could have been a life saving decision. he told us he cut straight through within about a block and a half of where the attack happened. while he did hear a tremendous amount of sirens once he got back to the hotel, he thought it was a fire. it wasn't until he woke up when he heard about what happened. >> you know, it's i think the saddest part is watching the actual community here right now. this place was so joyful, so excited last night to bring in the new year. just everybody having fun. i mean, this town was due to be, you know, completely packed this entire week. and now the heart of the city has just been carved out. >> so bagala also took these photos yesterday, where you can see some of the coroner trucks on scene. he says there is still a massive area closed off to the public, and the silence has been unsettling. we've also learned that the mother of the notre dame tight end, cooper flanagan, who is from the bay area, wasan,

also there in new orleans for the sugar bowl. that has since been postponed for today. and she says luckily their family members were not out there when this happened. but some fans and other family members of players are unfortunately leaving before the game even happens because they have to get back to work. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you lena. hours after the violence in new orleans. this explosion. a truck blew up just outside the trump hotel in las vegas. the driver is dead. seven others are hurt this morning. sources tell abc news investigators are identifying the person who rented the truck in colorado springs, but they are still trying to determine who is behind the wheel in las vegas. they are following leads in at least four states and overseas. they believe the blast was intentional, but have not confirmed if it is terrorism. >> i know everybody is interested in that word and trying to see if we can say, hey, this is a terrorist attack. that is our goal and that's what we're trying to do. we have a ton of resources dedicated to

this right now. >> new images show the bed of the truck was filled with gas canisters, camping fuel, and fireworks. police in las vegas say they are looking for specific links between the explosion there and the new orleans attack. >> the truck in las vegas and the truck used in the new orleans attack were both rented on turo app, which is based in san francisco. abc seven news went by the company's office, montgomery street, yesterday. so far, turo leadership does not believe either renter had a criminal background that would have raised red flags. turo is considered a peer to peer car rental app, meaning a person can rent out their privately owned vehicles. turo issued a statement that read in part, we are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents. we remain committed to maintaining the highest standards in risk management. of course, we are staying on top of all the new information coming in about the tragedy in new orleans and the

>> on monday, oakland's leaders were praising the drop in the city's homicide rate. now, at a five year low, a 34% decrease in the number of homicides to date. >> a 33% decline in firearms related shootings. >> then came the four fatalities just since tuesday morning. >> what that says to me is that we as a community have a long way to go. >> wanda johnson held her annual vigil to mark the killing of her son, oscar grant, at the hands of bart police officer johannes mehserle in 2009. her work since includes trying to mend the relationship between the black community and law enforcement, something advocates say is working. >> we've been able to help them improve some of their systems, some of their internal accountability systems, some of their police processes and their policies. so i think the short answer is yes. >> but when it comes to the issue of community violence, johnson says more needs to be done. >> we're still seeing people losing their lives senselessly, and it's up to us to come together as a community and work

to bring a healing to, especially our young men. >> oakland police say the first fatal shooting was 7 a.m. tuesday in the 1300 block of 14th street. 12 hours later, a man was stabbed to death in the 1900 block of 70th avenue. around 10:15 p.m, a shooting incident near jack london square left one dead and three hospitalized. then came the first fatality of 2025, a shooting about 3 a.m. in the 2400 block of 24th avenue. >> people were feeling optimistic that the homicide rates had significantly gone down. >> jorge galvez is with the organization communities united for restorative youth justice. he says that optimism comes from the proven success of violence prevention programs like ceasefire, which is attributed as the cause of the drop in oakland's homicides. >> i think we're going to have to harness on that energy that we had 16 years ago, and we're going to have to continue to resist, to affirm the human dignity of black and brown people here in this nation. >> oakland police were not available for comment in

oakland, anser hassan abc seven news. >> reckless. absurd. unacceptable. that's what honolulu's mayor is calling an illegal new year's eve fireworks explosion that killed three people and injured more than 20 others. incredibly, this is video of that incident as dozens of fireworks went off inside a home. at the same time, the blast blew out windows across the street. some of the victims, including children, had severe burns and shrapnel wounds. >> essentially, it was a bomb. it was fireworks. but they were put together in a way that they were so explosive they took the table down, apparently, and then rocketed these fireworks into other caches of fireworks. >> videos posted to social media show there were other illegal fireworks going off across the city at the same time. it's a sight that we typically see here in the bay area during the holidays as well. police are now investigating if the person who lit the firework should face
