>> tonight in new orleans, people are back on bourbon street. even as investigators piece together new information about that deadly truck attack. the crowds have returned, but signs of the carnage remain from a large law enforcement presence to a growing memorial to the 14 people killed. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. after the deadliest isis inspired attack on u.s. soil in years, more than 1000 law enforcement officers are tracking down new leads tonight. sources tell abc news that investigators found bomb making materials in the killer's home in houston. he's believed to have planted explosive devices in the area of bourbon street, changed clothes, then drove through the new year's eve crowds before being killed by officers. tonight, we're learning more about the victims. a growing memorial along bourbon street. >> we laid 14 yellow roses down for our 14 victims this morning

in a show of resilience. >> and i know with this music, it is. >> a second line band played as the street reopened to the public law enforcement on every corner. >> so it feels safe. and it's all clean out here and everything, but personally it just feels a little eerie after what happened. >> 14 people were killed in wednesday's terror attack. among the victims, 18 year old nakia dedeaux, who was out with friends on new year's eve. >> everybody loved her. she was just so bubbly, so eccentric. >> kareem badawi was a freshman in college and a high school football player. >> kareem, you know, just just fun loving guy. never looked for the center of attention. >> one of the survivors, 51 year old jeremy shinsky, is paralyzed from a previous accident. he says he never saw the truck coming. >> i'm alive. and i mean, i'm alive. everything is good. i just feel bad for the people that didn't make it. >> the fbi says on tuesday, 42 year old shamsudin jabar drove a

rented pickup truck from houston to new orleans. he'd posted social media videos pledging allegiance to isis, but investigators believe he acted alone. >> what i can tell you right now is that he was 100% inspired by isis. >> the fbi has now released a poster with new images of the suspect. it also shows a cooler with explosives they believe jabar placed on a new orleans street corner. >> we did obtain surveillance footage showing jabar placing the devices where they were found after speeding down bourbon street wednesday. >> jabar opened fire with an ar style rifle. officials admitting now that jabar defeated security by driving onto the sidewalk. new metal barricades were brought in to that same spot today. right now, abc news has learned that the fbi and department of homeland security are warning law enforcement across the country about the potential for copycat attacks. the bulletin is out of an abundance of caution, warning

police to be on the lookout for fraudulent ids to rent vehicles. now, police in the bay area have said there are no indications of specific threats here and were unaware of any specific threats anywhere in the country. but they are in a heightened state of alert about the possibility. let's move now to the cyber truck explosion outside the trump international las vegas hotel on new year's day as well. investigators at this time don't think there's any connection between these two incidents. the suspect was identified as 37 year old man who is an army soldier but was on leave. he drove from colorado to las vegas. investigators searched his home in colorado springs today. like the attacker in new orleans, he rented the vehicle through the san francisco based turbo app in las vegas. two guns were found inside the cybertruck, but they were burned beyond recognition. seven other people were hurt in the blast. their injuries are said to be minor. now, both the las vegas explosion investigation and the

starts to slide by 8 a.m. into other parts of the bay area. as we head into the 11:00 hour, it's crossing the central bay. wave heights are already building with this storm. you can see 15 to 16 foot waves out over the pacific. high surf advisory goes up 9 p.m. tomorrow until 3 a.m. sunday. watch out because those breakers are going to be between 18 and 25ft, bringing dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. beach hazards statement up all day tomorrow from the morning till night time, as we do have moderate to high risk of sneaker waves. it is a level one storm. on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale for tomorrow. light to moderate rain, slippery roads, large breaking waves. we certainly welcome the rain. as you will notice, sfo, oakland and san jose all running behind for this time of year. the good news is, santa rosa is at 209% of average and san francisco 121%. i'll be back to let you know if that rain is sticking around for your weekend plans. >> dan. thanks, sandhya. that

figure in santa rosa is remarkable. well, new developments tonight for the storm battered santa cruz wharf. it is now set to reopen on saturday, nearly two weeks after powerful waves sent part of it crumbling into the ocean. now, this is certainly great news for businesses on the wharf that have been closed ever since the collapse. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spent the day in santa cruz and has the update on the recovery. >> reporter the city of santa cruz is reopening the wharf this saturday. the big announcement was made nearly two weeks since the end of the wharf collapsed into the ocean on december 23rd, 150ft of the wharf's end fell into the water, taking with it part of the dolphin restaurant and restrooms. thursday, we met surfers and beachgoers excited to hear the news of the reopening. >> i love this place. it recharges me. >> san jose resident dora alvarez and brenda gonzalez love spending time at the wharf. >> this is the best place. this is my piece. i shake because i'm

just so excited to be here. go have you some calamari, some drinks. there's a rotating bar that she showed me. it's amazing. >> the city says the wharf has been deemed safe based on a recently completed sonar and engineering assessment. the sonar scan shows where three heavy pieces of construction equipment fell into the water. the engineering assessment stated there's no structural damage other than the area that collapsed. >> i came out here to just see the damage of it, and i wanted to see it because i live close to capitola. i'm wondering if it was like kind of the same or not. >> roughly 20 businesses on the wharf with hundreds of employees can now reopen. we met a couple visiting from sedona, arizona. >> oh, i'm sure everybody is so relieved. yes. so we'll just have to come back another time. >> the reopening ceremony is scheduled for this saturday at 10 a.m. in santa cruz. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> to the east bay now. a fire

tears through a gas station this afternoon in antioch. started just before 4 p.m. at star gas on lone tree way and rural road. firefighters had the flames under control in about 15 minutes, but it was ferocious for a time. the damage, however, is extensive. the building is considered a total loss, as you can clearly see from this video. investigators think the fire started in a utility closet and was accidental, possibly caused by some sort of electrical problem. very good news. at least no one was hurt. well, building a better bay area is all about finding solutions, as you know. which is why for the last decade, we've paid very close attention to san francisco's vision zero. that's the plan to make streets safer and bring traffic deaths to 0 in 2024. well, 2024 came and went and that vision has not come to fruition. in 2024, 41 people died on san francisco's streets, including two dozen pedestrians, even more than in 2014, when

vision zero was first announced, when 31 people died. abc seven news reporter tara campbell looks at what ten years of work actually accomplished and what's next? >> reporter it's a record san francisco certainly didn't want to set, but now it's official. the city saw more traffic deaths in 2024 than any other year in the past decade, a decade that was devoted to dropping those deaths down to zero. >> it's absolutely working. i can't imagine what san francisco would be like if the city didn't invest in vision zero, didn't put the resources aside. >> dozens of cities across the country have taken the vision zero pledge. but like others, san francisco is seeing the death toll rise, particularly among pedestrians. last year, 24 people died while walking the streets. >> it's combating decades of streets designed for vehicles versus for all of us. >> we spent tens of millions of dollars reconfiguring the

streets, putting in protections, putting in bike lanes, putting in a lot of different things to try to make the streets safer. >> but abc seven insider phil matier says a lack of law enforcement is catching up. >> one of the reasons ticketing went down over the years was that they didn't have enough police. another one was that there was a concern that tickets were a form of racial discrimination, and that minorities and people of color wound up getting most tickets. >> there's never anybody getting caught for like, running red lights or stop signs, minor traffic violations that tend to cause pedestrian injuries. >> advocates have long been pushing for the use of more technology to combat fast, distracted driving. the governor this past year signing off on a pilot project that will help catch people speeding through intersections. >> we believe that the pilot, the speed camera pilot that's going to be turned on in march, is going to be a game changer. >> san francisco will be the first of six cities to launch the pilot program.

>> imagine 33 locations with speed cameras. so really changing people's behavior and having them obey the speed law. >> meanwhile, they're calling on mayor elect daniel lurie to re-adopt the vision zero policy. in his first 100 days in office. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> and as san francisco considers the future of traffic safety, the city will also take a new approach to public safety overall. incoming mayor daniel lurie appointed former san francisco police officer paul yep to be the city's first chief of public safety. and abc seven news spoke with you up today about this new job. >> what i'm super excited about is that this will be the first time that a representative from the mayor's office will be coordinating all the emergency services and public safety departments for the city of san francisco. and the coordination is important because we want to be on the same page and hyper focus on our priorities as needed to make the city safe. >> yep. >> has been part of laurie's transition team. he was a member

at least two people are dead, 19 others injured after a plane crashed into a furniture warehouse in orange county,

putting up a massive fireball, as you can see there. the ntsb says the single engine aircraft took off at about 2 p.m. from the fullerton airport. a short time later, the pilot called and asked to immediately return to the airport. the plane made a turn, but then crashed about 1000ft short of the runway. a worker at the furniture warehouse described what he saw. >> all i saw is a big fire at the top of the ceiling, and there. fireball. and it was black smoke. we didn't know. then our boss was shouting at us. everybody evacuated. >> scary moments. obviously, it's not clear where the plane was headed and the weather was fine at the time. investigators are working to determine how many people were on board. now for our abc seven news at 11, where we help you get ahead on the big headlines you'll be hearing about in the days ahead. we'll begin with the battle brewing over the speaker of the house, setting up a chaotic day at the u.s. capitol. tomorrow,

republican mike johnson is fighting to keep the speakership. today, johnson met with fellow republicans who are undecided about whether to back his bid to retain the gavel. tomorrow, the house convenes to vote for a speaker, and at least 16 republican members have not committed to voting for johnson. he cannot afford to lose more than one republican, and representative thomas massie of kentucky has said publicly he is not supporting johnson. >> he doesn't have my vote. >> so you won't vote for him. >> he does not have my vote. >> will you change your mind? >> i would take a christmas miracle. >> johnson does not appear to have the support of majority of his party, and has the endorsement of president elect trump. all right. our next adventure involves the possible release from prison of eric and lyle menendez. the brothers were convicted of killing their parents in the high profile murder case almost 30 years ago now. tomorrow, several family members pushing for the brothers to be resentenced. we'll meet

the newly elected los angeles county district attorney. the prior da asked a judge to sentence the brothers after the election. the new da said he needed to review the case. next, in the advancer, a hearing is set for tomorrow to consider a motion to release former san francisco 40 niners dana stubblefield from prison. the hearing comes a week after a state appeals court overturned stubblefield's 2020 rape conviction. the appeals court found that a statement prosecutors made referencing stubblefield's race during the trial was discriminatory and violated the racial justice act. stubblefield has served three years of a 15 year to life sentence. and our final advance are two oakland fire stations are going to be closing on monday because of the city's budget cuts. that's according to the firefighters union. they are stations 25, which is located on butters drive, and 28, which is on grass valley road. station

ten is already closed for remodeling and will not reopen. firefighters plan to hold a news conference on monday morning at city hall, as city council is scheduled to hold a meeting about all of this. the union plans to demand the stations reopen because of the impact the closures could have on public safety. well, apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of using its virtual assistant, siri, to eavesdrop on users. the proposed settlement would resolve a five year old lawsuit. apple is accused of activating siri to record conversations through iphones and other devices for more than a decade. some of the recorded conversations were then allegedly shared with advertisers. now, if the settlement is approved in court, iphone users would be able to file claims for part of that settlement. san francisco kicked off the new year with the return of downtown first thursdays. this evening, it's a celebration on second street between market and howard that includes outdoor

snow pack 108% of average. the northern part of the sierra is doing really well. 161 but central and southern sierra are running behind where they should be. so we'll take any snow we can get. and it's coming. winter storm warning. 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow. 6 to 10in above 5500ft. expecting higher totals over the peaks and gusty winds. so driving could be hazardous for all you skiers and boarders if you want to go up. tomorrow is not the ideal day. heavy afternoon rain and snow. so if you want to get out, get out in the morning. wind gusts will pick up up to 40 miles an hour later in the day. saturday. dry. sun and clouds 38 degrees. that's a better day to go out and it's going to be dry on partly cloudy on sunday. clouds are gathering, as you can see on live doppler seven, and rain is not far behind your temperatures at this hour in the 40s and the 50s. a beautiful view from sutro tower. looking at san francisco tomorrow. the rain arrives during the morning drive. next few days. rough and dangerous surf, so be careful and it is going to be dry and mainly sunny

for the weekend, except a little more cloud cover on saturday. a level one storm for tomorrow will bring that light to moderate rain, slippery roads and large breaking waves. we time it out for you. commute begins at 5:00 and so does the wet weather in the north bay. you will notice at 7 a.m. the east bay, san francisco and heading into the peninsula and the east bay at 10 a.m. by 1230 in the afternoon, the south bay starts to get that rain, and then it's going to turn over to just spotty showers for the evening hours. it's almost done as we head towards the late night hours, rainfall totals will look like this anywhere from about 1800s in mountain view and san jose to 6/10 in ukiah. there will be some spots that pick up a little bit more than that. isolated locations 40s and 50s. on your morning temperatures. don't leave home without your umbrellas. you'll need them during the morning hours especially, and into the afternoon for the southern part of our viewing area, 50s and 60s. on your highs, i would hang on to the umbrellas, but you'll need your shades at times. here's a look at the accuweather
