out the new year's day attack entirely on his own. >> george: we're also learning more about some of the victims who lost their lives on bourbon street. that happened early hours of the new year. whit johnson starts us off from new orleans. good morning, whit. >> reporter: george, good morning. there is a spirit of resilience and defiance in this city. we're on bourbon street, which we're standing on, reopened only 36 hours after this attack. you can see they've already placed new metal barricades on the street and sidewalk. all of this as we're learning more about the suspect who police now say acted alone. this morning dramatic new video showing people running for cover as a white f150 truck races down bourbon street taking aim at pedestrians. investigators going through hours of hours of footage and 400 tips from the public to learn what led up to this deadly terror attack on new year's day morning, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. >> what i can tell you right now is that he was 100% inspired by

isis. >> reporter: the fbi revealing a detailed timeline saying 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar drove that rented truck from houston to new orleans on december 31st, about 340 miles, starting at 1:29 a.m. january first, authorities say he began posting multiple videos to facebook, claiming he joined isis before last summer, and pledged allegiance to the group. >> in the first video, jab bar said he planned to harm his family and friends but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers. >> reporter: at 2:03 a.m., just over an hour before the attack, he's seen walking a block from bourbon street. this photo showing one of the two coolers where the fbi said he placed explosive devices inside and had a remote detonator. then around 3:15 a.m. he takes a sharp right turn, seen in this video, using that truck as a weapon, launching his attack.

>> dozens of people that got hit by this car. >> reporter: the suspect also opening fire with an ar-style rifle before he was shot and killed by police. >> people panicking. >> reporter: despite earlier fears that the suspect may have had accomplices, the fbi now saying he was likely a lone wolf. >> we do not assess at this point that anyone else involved in this attack is involved in this attack except for shamsud din jabbar. >> reporter: sources tell abc news fbi agents and local law enforcement discovered bombmaking materials referred to as precursor chemicals in the suspect's houston home. suspect's half brother calling the attack shocking and completely outside jabbar's character. >> our hearts and prayers go out to those families and those who witnessed this tragedy. >> reporter: but we're all hearing the stories of survival. this mangled motorized

wheelchair belongs to jeremy sensky. the 51-year-old telling me he never saw the truck coming. >> pretty messed up. i've got broken bones. both legs are broken. i got lucky, basically. everything up here is still good. >> reporter: sensky was knocked to the ground, severely injured. your body is on the mend, but mentally, where are you right now? >> i've been through a lot in my life, man. i was paralyzed in a car wreck. i feel lucky right now, man. i'm alive. i still got the people i was with. they're still alive. >> reporter: a trauma nurse was enjoying his night off when he got an alert about the attack and ran to help. >> i threw out my bag and i jumped in, you know? found out where i needed to be the help out. >> reporter: but 14 people were killed including a freshman and fraternity member at the university of alabama. family and friends remembering him as a talented athlete, known for his hard work and team spirit. >> fun loving guy.

never looked for the center of attention. he was always there though just 'cause he was a positive guy and well liked. >> reporter: drew dawson loved to be on the water. his family saying the 26-year-old had an infectious smile who lit up every room he entered. and matthew teneborio. he worked with his dad for the new orleans saints and pelicans. >> i told matthew, don't go. it's very dangerous. >> all i could do was just hug him and tell him i love you, happy new year. please text me when you get home. that text never came. >> reporter: nicole perez was a loving mother to her 4-year-old son and had been helping him learn how to read. >> she loved her kid. her kid loved her. she was just amazing. >> reporter: former princeton football player tyler beck was celebrating the new year in the french quarter. tiger was killed in the attack while his friend and fellow

princeton alum ryan quigley remains in the hospital with injuries. >> blood could not make them any closer. like, he loved that boy. ryan is in our family group chat. he will be my forever brother. >> reporter: tiger's family reflecting on his legacy. >> i guess what i could compare him to was a shooting star. he lived very brightly. >> to the fullest. >> to the fullest. we're gonna miss him for the rest of our lives. >> life is so fragile and so short. it can be taken at any given moment. you really need to love those around you. >> reporter: and as you can see this growing memorial here on bourbon street. the new orleans police department and other officials in a private ceremony placing 14 yellow roses which symbolize friendship and joy, to honor the people who died in this attack and on this street. so many others are still recovering at local hospitals. george? >> george: whit, thanks very

much. let's get more on the investigation from pierre thomas. pierre, all signs point to a lone wolf, as we just heard. >> george, progress is being made. they believe that he worked alone, in terms of executing the attack itself. but there's a critical question. how was he radicalized? did he do this online on his own or was there an isis recruiter or handler directing this there behind the scenes? >> george: he had a lot of trouble at home. >> he was divorced at least three times, as far as we can tell. also financial stressors. we know stress can be one of the factors that leads people to extremism. george, i took particular note of the fbi making the point that he was talking about killing his own family before he decided to go forth. >> george: the broader political point, broader political fear right now, copycats. >> overnight we are told by sources the fbi, the department of homeland security sent out a bulletin to 18,000 law enforcement agencies, basically out of an abundance of caution, telling them, be on the lookout for copycats.

they're very concerned people will be motivated by what they saw and try to act out on their own. >> george: pierre thomas, thank you very much. rebecca? >> rebecca: george, thank you. we turn now to president biden officially blocking a multibillion dollar takeover attempt from nippon steel of u.s. steel. mary bruce is here tracking the story. mary, this has major ripple effects, everything from jobs to the prices consumers pay. good morning. >> good morning, rebecca. it really could. president biden is officially blocking the sale of u.s. steel to a japanese buyer. biden saying without production and domestic steel workers, our nation is less strong and less secure. the president had publicly opposed this for months. with just weeks left in office, and could damage u.s. relations with japan. u.s. steel had argued the merger would provide critical funding to key plants but the union

resisted the deal saying it was bad for workers. now president-elect trump had also opposed the takeover and gives them the chance to abandon the deal. >> george: the other big washington story today, will mike johnson be elected speaker again? >> george, there's a lot of uncertainty in washington today. look, publicly he is projecting confidence but we know, even with endorsement from donald trump behind the scene, the speaker is scrambling to convince those republican holdouts to back him. the margin is so thin. johnson can likely lose the support of just one republican and still hold the gavel. thomas massey of kentucky is a hard no. 17 others are undecided. we could see a real fight. it's a real test of donald trump's sway over the party. without a speaker, congress basically comes to a screeching halt, unable to even certify donald trump's victory. >> george: many of president-elect trump's picks for cabinet picks also faces controversy. pete hegseth, choice for defense secretary. the senate committee is digging deeper into his background.

>> abc news learned the top republican and democrat on the senate armed services committee has been reaching out to that veterans organization that pete hegseth used to run appearing to request additional information about those recently reported allegations of the 2017 sexual assault. those accusations that hegseth financially mismanaged the group. no charges were ever filed. pete hegseth denied the claims. but it is a reminder he still faces a real uphill battle for confirmation. >> george: thank you very much. gio? >> gio: thank you very much. now the search for motive in the cyber truck explosion outside the trump hotel in las vegas. the driver now identified as a highly decorated u.s. army master sergeant who took his own life just moments before the explosion. mola lenghi is in vegas with the latest. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, gio. this morning we're learning more about that suspect. his extensive military experience. by all accounts, a model soldier. this as investigators try to piece together a motive. this morning new details ton investigation into this explosion outside trump

international hotel in las vegas. local officials say 37-year-old matthew livelsberger is the man they found inside the burned out vehicle. police revealing that the suspect, who was a highly decorated green beret, died by suicide just before the explosion. >> the individual had sustained a gunshot wound to the head prior to the detonation of the vehicle. one of the handguns was found at his feet inside of the vehicle. >> reporter: master sergeant livelsberger, who was on approved leave from his base in germany, rented the cyber truck via turo on december 28 in denver. officials tracing his movements from colorado to arizona through tesla charging stations. livelsberger pulling into the hotel valet at 7:35 a.m. wednesday returning an hour later. just 17 seconds after pulling in, the explosion that injured seven bystanders. investigators are still looking for a motive, but do not think this incident is directly linked to the terror attack in new

orleans. >> no information that we're aware of right now that connects this individual to any terrorist organization around the world. >> reporter: authorities say tesla's ceo musk is sending a team here to las vegas to try to salvage video from that cyber truck that might have been recorded by the vehicle to potentially help in the investigation, george. >> george: okay, mola, thanks. we're going to switch gears now. final weekend of the nfl regular season. lions and vikings square off. saquon barkley denied his chance to go for the single season rushing record. will reeve tracking it all. >> will: i sure am. good morning everyone. we've got six of the seven places locked but drama still abounds. the stakes could not be higher for nfc north division rivals detroit lions and minnesota vikings. winner gets the first seed in the nfc and first round bye. they're both 14-2. this is the best season in lions history. they are led by coach dan campbell and quarterback jared goff.

minnesota with sam darnold at qb. they have been a revelation. great redemption story. how about this come back story? the cincinnati bengals were 1-4 at one point. then 4-8. now they've rattled off four straight wins. they're 8-8. they've been carried by quarterback joe burrow. he's having an mvp level season. if they beat the steelers and both the miami dolphins and denver broncos lose, the bengals, against all odds, are into the playoffs. but the broncos will be facing a kansas city team with plans to bench their starters including patrick mahomes and travis kelce. they're going to try to get some extra rest as they gear up for their third consecutive super bowl. speaking of sitting starters, eagles running back saquon barkley looks to likely be sidelined this weekend thus depriving fans of the chance to see him break that single season rushing record. he'll finish 101 yards behind eric dickerson's 1984 mark.

good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. tens of thousands of fans extended their stays so they could still attend the sugar bowl after it was postponed. it was clear the weight of the tragedy was quite heavy, with city officials mentioning the victims and the security they have in place, with new orleans still set to host some of the biggest events in the world. it began with a moment of silence. new orleans mayor leading the crowd at the sugar bowl, remembering the victims in the attack on bourbon street. president biden with a recorded message. >> the spirit of new orleans can never be kept down. >> reporter: on the field, notre dame defeating the second seed georgia bull dogs 23-10. the dome erupting in celebration, fighting irish now advancing to the semifinals where they'll face penn state in next week's orange bowl. law enforcement was also front and center. security at this one intersection by the super dome. multiple police vehicles and these barricades.

as a white f150 truck races down bourbon street, taking aim at pedestrians. investigators pouring through hundreds of hours of footage and 400 tips from the public to learn what led up to this deadly attack in new orleans on new year's day morning, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. >> what i can tell you right now is that he was, 100%, inspired by isis. >> reporter: the fbi revealing a new detailed timeline saying 42-year-old shamsud din jabbar drove that rented truck from houston to new orleans on december 31st about 340 miles. starting at 1:29 a.m. on january 1st, authorities say he began posting multiple videos to facebook, claiming he joined isis before last summer and pledged allegiance to the group. >> in the first video, jabbar explains he originally planned to harm his family and friends, but was concerned the news headlines would not focus on the, quote, war between the believers and the disbelievers. >> reporter: at 2:03 a.m., just over an hour before the attack,

>> reporter: good morning, rebecca. the surgeon general this morning is sounding the alarm about the dangers of alcohol, warning that drinking is the third leading preventible cause of cancer and calling for alcoholic beverages to carry a warning label similar to what's on packs of cigarettes. hhs saying in a statement alcohol is a well established preventible cause of cancer, responsible for about 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the united states. the previous perception was that moderate or limited drinking, one a day for women and two to men, had little risk to your health or wellbeing. the surgeon general said that's not the case for cancer risk. he said one of every six breast cancer instances is attributable to alcohol consumption. he's now calling for that updated labeling on alcoholic beverages to include a heightened risk of breast cancer, colon cancer and at least five other malignancies linked to scientific studies to alcohol consumption. it does take an act of congress to mandate these new warning labels. it's unclear if the incoming

administration will support this. no question, it's a real wakeup call. >> gio: mary bruce with the breaking news. thank you. now to laying a former president to rest. ceremonies beginning tomorrow for jimmy carter, who passed sunday at the age of 100. they will start in his hometown of plains, georgia. that's where we find faith abubey this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, gio. former president carter and his late wife lived not too far from here. every year around this time, they would gather the family for a vacation. this time around, within the next 24 hours when they gather here, it will be to start their final good-bye to the family's patriarch. this community which has held former president for an entire century will be the first and last to honor his memory on this journey. funeral services begin tomorrow morning. current and former secret service agents who have protected carter sin he took office will carry his remains and then join the

thank you for coming in this morning. >> thanks for having me, george. >> george: what's at the top of the list? >> top rated diets for 2025 are the mediterranean diet, the dash diet and flexitarian diet. all our experts love because they're delicious, healthy, relatively easy to follow. no strict rules, no calorie counting. they can follow them for the long term. mediterranean you probably have heard of. it's inspired sort of by the traditional foods of greece and other mediterranean countries. very plant forward, seafood. things like sweets and red meats you treat for special occasions. and the second is the dash diet which stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension. great at reducing blood pressure. also a very plant forward diet. the key difference here is that it restricts your sodium intake as well as your saturated fat intake. again, things like red meat, butter, fried food. >> george: people go on diets

for a lot of different reasons. if you just want to lose some weight, what's the best one? >> best weight loss diet for 2025 is weight watchers, familiar name for many. what's nice about it, especially for those who want that extra support, it offers coaching, meal tracking, community support. studies do show if you have that extra support, you're usually more successful at weight loss. >> george: which diets are best for improving mental health? >> mental health, there's a whole field of science that's been starting calling nutritional psychiatry. they are seeing a connection between mind, or mental health, and food. so mediterranean was number one on our list. number two is called the mind diet which is basically a combination of the mediterranean and the dash diet that we just talked about. there's a stronger focus on what we call brain boosting foods. berries, especially blueberries, nuts, dark leafy greens and omega 3 fatty acids which you

i never let my kids see me cry. >> will: but the 42-year-old hit the jack pot in july receiving a new personalized cancer treatment that harnessed the power of her own immune cells to attack her tumor. >> just a ton of weight got lifted off my shoulders. >> this is a leap forward for science, for medicine, for cancer treatment. >> will: the one time newly fda approved treatment is made from a patient's tumor cells, mixing them with another drug to help them expand into billions of cancer fighting immune cells. clinical trial results show nearly one third of patients had some reduction in the size of tumor, with tumors disappearing completely in some. after first using chemotherapy to wipe out her immune system, she got the new treatment at the cleveland clinic. doctors are pleased with her progress. in just three months her tumors shrunk by half. >> mind blowing, inspiring. i can't put it into words.

i am so grateful. >> will: and when doctors first removed the cancer, they couldn't promise it wouldn't return. but today missy is thrilled this new medication is doing its job, and she's grateful for more time with her kids. about melanoma. doctors say when detected early it can be treated. and the risk of spread is typically low. as the disease advances, chance of spread and treatment complexity both increase. here's what to do. if you spot a mole, remember, a, b, c, d, e. that's rule. a for asymmetry, b for irregular border, c color variation, d diameter larger than 6mm and e for evolution meaning if the mole changed in size, shape or color over time. if you notice any of those features, be sure to see your doctor. george? >> george: thank you, will. coming up, mario here performing one of his biggest hits.
