for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm julian glover. the closures are part of oakland's effort to close a $129 million budget deficit. >> money very tight. the brown outs will impact stations 25 and 28 and are expected to last six months. abc seven news reporter luz pena is following the story and has more. >> reporter this is a reality of a city facing a $129 million budget deficit. cuts need to be made and these two firehouses will close on monday. >> there are no firehouses that we can afford to close. we need every firehouse we have and then some. >> oakland's fire chief said data led them to these stations, which are among the least busy, according to the last published fire response report. oakland's firefighters responded to more than 54,000 calls in 2023. fire engine, 28 responded to just 405. of those. fire station 25 responded to 834. >> right now, these two

firehouses will be closed for the next six months through the through the end of the fiscal year. uh- at at the end of the fiscal year. these firehouses will open back up. and if we have a need to continue to brown out firehouses, we'll rotate to different firehouses from there. >> firefighters from engine 28 and 25 will be sent to other stations. the city's administrator said they're aware of the impact. >> this is not a very good place for us to be in at this point in time, but our goal is to come up with a more robust solution. >> fire risk is the main concern for many in this area, with the closest station about ten minutes away. >> we are heartbroken. it's just sad. >> the last fire that we had in this area, they kind of were that first line of defense for at least like our immediate area. >> a lot of trees, a lot of houses, a lot of big houses. and it gets really dry in the summer. so yeah, that's scary. >> the fire chief said closing these firehouses until june will save oakland approximately $5 million, but response times will

be delayed. >> and it's naive to think that. and again, i don't say this lightly, to think that people will not be hurt or killed because of these decisions. >> in oakland, luz pena, abc seven news. >> oakland police are investigating the deadly shooting of a woman at a gas station overnight. the incident happened at the quick serve station at 22nd avenue and east 12th street around midnight. investigators say the woman was shot after getting into a dispute with another person. she died after being taken to a hospital. police say this is now the fourth shooting at the same gas station since 2021. three of those shootings have been fatal. >> a warning now from police in the east bay. they say a robbery crew is deliberately causing minor car crashes to target people. the mercury news reports the tactic was used in robberies in and around oakland in recent weeks, including one at 28th avenue and international boulevard. the victim was forced to give up a rolex watch, a wedding ring and other jewelry

worth more than $15,000. police say the thieves will intentionally rear end another car, then rob the victim when they get out to exchange information. they're also linked, linking the same crew to a purse snatching in hayward. >> as of today, the east bay officially has new representation in washington, d.c. for the first time in 26 years, barbara lee will not be in the halls of congress. she'll now be replaced by lateefah simon. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley talked to the former east bay congresswoman about what's next in her storied public service career. >> no regrets. i don't think there are any regrets that i have. >> yesterday, she was long standing. congresswoman barbara lee, representing northern alameda county in oakland. today, she passed the torch on to her successor as she talked to abc seven news on her cell phone from the speaker's lobby in the house of representatives. >> it feels really good that lateefah simon is not congresswoman elect, but

headed now to a courtroom. sheriff corpus has filed a $10 million claim against the county, alleging discrimination and harassment. it comes after a 400 page report alleging acts of intimidation, conflicts of interest and corruption in the sheriff's department. the report also says corpus and her former chief of staff had an improper relationship. they have both denied that. sheriff corpus says the investigation is part of a conspiracy to defame her. legal claims are typically precursors, of course, to lawsuits. >> the department of justice will be monitoring the work of the antioch police department for the next five years as a part of an investigation into racist text messages by police officers. 13 antioch police officers have been fired or resigned as a part of the scandal. the texts used derogatory terms for black people and encouraged the shooting of the now former mayor, who is black. under the agreement with the fbi, antioch police will also hire a consultant to update department

policies and training around the use of force hiring and investigations. >> all right, let's turn now to the weather and a wet start to the day. weekend is upon us. here is video from earlier today when roadways around the bay area were pretty slick. most of the rain has now cleared out, but we are still tracking some showers. >> and let's take you to the sierra now where the road conditions are clearly dangerous. look at the video from the traffic camera from interstate 80. caltrans held traffic there earlier today, as well as on u.s. 50 due to spinouts. all cars are required to have tire chains on both highways, except for four wheel drive vehicles. with snow tires, you can see the big flakes falling there. i-80 eastbound trucks are being screened for chains at applegate, and westbound trucks are being screened for chains west of reno. for more on the conditions in the sierra, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. a heavy snow falling there, sandhya. >> yeah, it has been heavy, no doubt about it. and, julian, as you mentioned, the chains are required. let me show you a live

picture from our zephyr cove camera, where the snow was just piling up earlier in the day. right now it has lightened up, but you will notice that there is snow on the ground. visibility is low. chain controls are required at this hour, so definitely take the chains if you're going up. but if i were you, i would hold off as it is kind of hazardous to drive up there. looking at those thunderstorms up in northern california. main front has gone through the bay area, so things are quiet now, but we still have a couple more showers that are developing. we had a couple of lightning strikes between point arena area and around sea ranch, so definitely was a little bit unstable earlier. now 8:00 tonight, you see those spotty showers in the north bay into the san francisco east bay locations at 10 p.m. and then one last push of an isolated shower at 1130. by tomorrow morning, all is quiet. a beach hazards statement until 9 p.m. tonight. there is a moderate to high risk of sneaker waves, and that gets replaced with a high surf advisory tonight. going into sunday morning, breakers

beer and wine, increases your risk for seven kinds of cancer and that it is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in america. >> abc news reporter zohreen shah has the story. >> the u.s. surgeon general now sounding the alarm about potential cancer causing dangers of even moderate amounts of alcohol consumption. vivek murthy on x stating that drinking is the third leading preventable cause of cancer after tobacco and obesity, and that it contributes to about 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year. murthy stated that any kind of alcohol consumption increases risks for at least seven different cancers, including breast cancer for women and cancers in the colorectum esophagus, liver, mouth, throat, and voice box. the surgeon general also called for a reassessment and revision of the guideline limits for alcohol consumption to account for increased cancer risk, and suggests updating the current

warning on alcohol beverages to include cancer risk warnings like those on cigarettes. >> it's not that surprising to see that these these guidelines have. the discussion has been going back and forth for so many years because the research is continuously evolving. >> government warning labels for alcohol have remained the same for nearly 40 years, and only warns of dangers when consuming while pregnant, and that it may inhibit the ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and that it may cause health problems. congress would need to pass legislation for a cancer warning to be updated. many with mixed feelings about how helpful a label would be. >> i don't think it's going to make that big of a difference, but in a warning label, i would hope it would. but my gut feeling is no. >> well, i think even though it might not help, it might make people stop and, you know, take a second thought about it. so in that respect, it may help a little bit. >> u.s. health officials say consuming more alcohol leads to a greater risk of cancers. the surgeon general adds only 45% of

traffic, steel and asphalt meets eco sensitive north bay wetlands. >> there are a number of things going on on state route 37 right now, as we prepare to be more resilient to flooding, to address congestion, and also to prepare for sea level rise. >> a long term plan preparing this roadway for the effects of climate change starts monday night, january 6th. caltrans is closing eastbound lanes of 37 overnight between highway 121 and railroad avenue in vallejo. a detour around the roadwork will be in place. >> that's about a 40 mile long detour. pretty significant. it's allow us to do geotechnical drilling so that we can get information that we need to design the new state route 37. >> flooding has become a routine issue on 37 during the rainy season in marin county, causing lengthy closures of the vital commute route. a plan to widen and elevate the entire 21 mile stretch is the ultimate goal, creating more bicycle, public transit and carpool options for all travelers. >> it's easily going to take over 20 years to do the entire

ultimate project, which is going to be an elevated viaduct. >> environmental advocates hope to create a corridor where wildlife and infrastructure can coexist. in a statement, the sonoma land trust says our role is to ensure we can work successfully with caltrans to enable restoration on both sides of the highway and reconnect the bay with the wetlands, both existing parcels and those yet to be restored. a series of public meetings on the project will be ongoing. monday's construction project will happen weeknights through february 1st in solano county. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> long term project. >> yeah. no kidding. right. looking really nice around here, right? rainy earlier. >> but the sun came out eventually, which is nice when the weekend hits. meteorologist sandhya patel is back with the forecast. sandhya? >> yeah, we got the much needed rain. it was welcome here. dan and julian. and now we'll get a chance for the weekend to dry out. but tonight, we still have a couple more showers in the forecast. let me show you some live views. they're absolutely gorgeous. from our different tower cameras around the bay

area. and then we will talk about what's happening. so earlier this morning we had a cold front come through. it brought us some widespread rain for the morning commute and even into the early afternoon. but that has moved on. we still have a little bit of energy off the coastline that is going to come through later tonight, bringing the potential for some spotty showers. rainfall today. ben loman picking up a half an inch. you will notice san jose 1100 1800, san francisco 2/10 in oakland, 2200 san rafael and 4000/600 in santa rosa, concord, brentwood. you only picked up a few hundredths of an inch. looking at live doppler seven right now, it is pretty quiet here locally. but as we take a look at what happened up along the northern california coast, we did have some lightning strikes. one strike made it down to the sonoma county coast. we're still watching a little bit of moisture off the coastline that will come through later on tonight. it's certainly snowing in the sierra. a winter storm warning until 10 p.m. tonight. it is hazardous to drive up there, as they do have

low visibility and snow and gusty winds. combining 40s and 50s on your temperatures right now. a live view from o. ak where you're seeing just a few clouds hanging around. if you're going to fly out of okay, it is fiesta friday travel forecast time tomorrow is going to start off with fog 57 for the high in the afternoon. if you are going to cabo 76 degrees. gorgeous weather in guadalajara, 80 degrees and mainly sunny skies. as we look at a live view from exploratorium, it is pretty clear from that vantage point. later tonight, few more showers and fog through sunday. large breaking waves. and this weekend we are talking about dry and partly cloudy conditions. we go hour by hour. later on this evening at 8:00, a few showers show up in the north bay, and then at 1030 over parts of the east bay and san francisco. closer to midnight it becomes really isolated. maybe a sprinkle or two, but tomorrow morning we will begin with some fog and then higher clouds will stream in across our skies, filtering the sunshine. now

additional rain. there is no storm impact scale because this is not going to be additional widespread rain. it's just going to be spotty. so anywhere from nothing measurable to a few hundredths of an inch for parts of the bay area. watch out for that fog tomorrow morning, 30s and 40s. you will need that extra layer and hang on to it for the afternoon, because it's not going to be very warm. highs will be in the 50s. partly cloudy skies. a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. and it's going to start off with that fog in the morning. but it is a dry weekend. sunday is milder. it's brighter. we head into next week. and while temperatures are not going to move much on monday, they start to trend higher. midweek warm sunshine for wednesday. above average. we're talking low to upper 60s. pretty mild for january going right on through friday. but julian and dan no need to panic just yet. we will have rain return. you know we get rain later on in january, february, march, april can be very productive. >> we'll enjoy this while we
