>> good evening. thank you for joining us i'm dan ashley. tonight, just a year after a massive menorah was destroyed at lake merritt, anti-semitic graffiti is showing up there now. and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains, a group of oaklanders says enough is enough. >> anti-semitic messages like this, painted alongside oakland's lake merritt. >> it was really just shocking, really hateful things said, i don't even want to, i'll send you pictures, but i don't even want to utter it. it's so ugly. >> it started after the october 7th hamas attack on israel last year. this graffiti, one of the latest incidents, it showed up on the last night of hanukkah right beside this massive menorah. last year it was vandalized and thrown in the lake. >> when it originally started. that was my that was my walking path with my children, was going around the lake and seeing just the pure vitriol was really too much. and so that's what

motivated me to start doing things. some removal on my own. >> zoe levine, taking matters into her own hands, but quickly realizing it was like drinking from a fire hose. >> you know, there was just so much every day, just more and more totally unchecked that i kind of had to get more help. >> jonathan mintzer is with the bay area's jewish community relations council. >> jcrc surveys that we do with professional researchers show that post october 7th, 60% of jews in the bay area feel less safe than they did before, and over a third have directly experienced or witnessed anti-semitism. >> the hate hitting right at home for mintzer. he lives in oakland and walks these paths. >> it is time for our leaders to really step up, to speak out against this ongoing hate, to take corrective action and to really dedicate themselves to supporting the jewish community during this difficult time. >> calling on the city's newly elected leaders to take action. >> it would go a long way from

to hear from the incoming mayor and the incoming district attorney here in alameda, that anti-semitism and all forms of hate have no place here in oakland, in alameda county, period. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> all right, let's turn now to the weather. and the rain certainly returned today, but has mostly cleared out, making for a pleasant friday night. but we are not out of the woods just yet. let's go over to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for a first look at the forecast. sandhya. yeah. >> dan, you know what i'm going to show you is what that storm is doing up in the mountains. this is our prettiest picture from zephyr cove. you are seeing the snowflakes coming down, and the snow has just been piling up. looking at live doppler seven, you will notice that the sierra has been seeing that snow steadily increasing throughout the day. there have been thunderstorms in northern california. we've seen our share of rain. the first tornado of the season of this year at least, was reported in northern california. we'll talk about

that later on. but the next system is sending us big waves. we've already seen those waves increasing. here's a live view from our santa cruz camera. watch out because it is dangerous. beach conditions. high surf advisory until 3 a.m. sunday. current wave heights anywhere between four feet at monterey bay to 12ft point. arena breakers 18 to 25ft means it's going to be dangerous to swim or surf. we have a beach. hazards for the northern monterey bay until sunday morning as well. moderate to high risk of sneaker waves. we saw those waves really starting to build earlier in the day in santa cruz. and once again, i cannot emphasize enough that if you're going to be out at the coast this upcoming weekend, that's what you need to watch out for. dan, we are going to put the umbrellas away this weekend, dry out and wait until you see what kind of january weather i have coming your way next week. just a few minutes, i am ready. >> thanks very much. in the north bay, two large trees came crashing down, crushing a mercedes and taking off a chunk

of a house. this afternoon, the owner says there is damage to two of her bedrooms there in monte rio, near guerneville. a p-g-and-e's power pole was also destroyed. one of the downed trees was a redwood and the other was a fir. the good news is no injuries. the drive up to the sierra tonight has been slow and hazardous. after heavy snowfall and windy conditions throughout the evening. santa just showed you some pictures from up there. a winter storm warning for the area just expired about an hour ago. interstate 80 traffic had to be held in both directions because of spinouts. chain controls remain in effect on highway 50. and remember, you can follow along as the forecast changes with the abc seven news bay area app. it gives you access to the same live doppler seven sandhya and our weather team use every day. we'll send alerts with important updates. the abc seven bay area app is available whenever you need it. a decision on whether former forty-niner dana stubblefield will be

released from jail has now been postponed. stubblefield's attorneys were in court in santa clara county today. they're asking for his release after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. as we reported to you last week, an appeals court found that a statement prosecutors made referencing stubblefield's race violated an anti-discrimination law. the defense team has also long maintained the judge blocked important evidence. there are some technical issues and some technical areas of law. this is an unusual case. the judge in this case allowed that the jury did not hear the truth. today's hearing was delayed because of some jurisdictional issues. stubblefield's release will be considered again now in two weeks time. the santa clara county da could also still decide to retry the case. we'll have to wait and see. right now, we'll move to the latest from new orleans. president biden and the first lady will travel to new orleans on monday to meet with grieving families. and that

community so devastated by the new year's day terror attack. the fbi has revealed a new, detailed timeline of that attack. investigators say shamsuddin jabar drove a rented truck from houston to new orleans on december 31st, posting a number of videos to facebook claiming he joined and pledged allegiance to isis. at 2:03 a.m, he is seen near bourbon street. the fbi says he planted explosives in two coolers with a remote detonator. by 315, surveillance video shows him taking a right turn. and then, just as you see, barreling down bourbon street. investigators have also determined jabar booked his truck rental on november 14th, suggesting he may have been plotting this attack for more than six weeks. we are, of course, also following the new developments with the cyber truck explosion outside the trump hotel in las vegas. officials say the suspect, matthew berger, shared personal and political grievances in two letters found on a phone in the

vehicle. according to the letters, the country was being led by those out to, quote, enrich themselves. he also claimed the incident was not meant as a terrorist attack. police say berger, a highly decorated green beret, died by suicide. he had been on leave from the military. to washington. now, the 119th congress has convened in d.c, and there are some changes with the bay area's contingent. after a contentious election that includes former san jose mayor sam liccardo. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with him today about his priorities. >> will you raise your right hand? >> friday marked the first day of a new congress. among those sworn in former san jose mayor and now congressman sam liccardo. >> congratulations. you are now members of the 119th congress. >> on friday afternoon, we spoke with liccardo from his washington, d.c. office. >> i feel enormous pride for the opportunity and the privilege to

be able to serve in this way. >> liccardo replaces longtime representative anna eschew. his district stretches from the south bay to the mid peninsula and coastal san mateo county. when not on capitol hill, liccardo will be at the same offices as you had in palo alto and half moon bay. >> well, we're trying to build teams in two cities right now. literally back home and in washington, dc. >> liccardo, a democrat, is a first term member in a minority party. he said he knows there are daunting challenges ahead. working with his party and the new administration, we think about the cost of housing, for example, the cost of childcare. >> and these are not issues that are finding their way into legislation or floor battles. those are the opportunities, i think, for young members like me to reach across the aisle, build coalitions, get some things done with relatively nonpartizan steps that can actually provide real relief for families that are struggling every day. >> liccardo said he plans to build a strong network of relationships so he can be the

way silicon valley needs in dc. >> we're going to actually be building out a platform to be bringing other members of congress out to the valley to be able to meet leaders in the community, to understand, for example, what are the needs of the innovation economy. >> during his campaign, liccardo used ai voice technology to speak to voters when he lost his voice. >> the last time i spoke with you, it was through the ai voice speech. so i just want to clarify this is you talking and not the. yes. >> although some people said they preferred the ai voice in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> a long time alameda county representative barbara lee has passed the baton to her successor in congress. >> 26 years in congress, seven and a half years in the california legislature and 11 years working for a member of congress. when i came in 1998, i hit the ground running. >> he talked with abc seven news from washington, where she welcomed newly elected lateefah simon to the seat. lee says

she's undecided about what to do next, and has not ruled out a possible run for mayor of oakland. she says she'll make a decision on that in the coming weeks. and of course, we'll let you know. very tender moment today on capitol hill, as vice president kamala harris comforted a young boy right before she administered the oath of office to incoming senator ruben gallego. his son spoke up. >> and, sally, you did it again. >> oh, you know what, sweetheart? but you know what? you know what? don't you worry about it, because there's still so much work to do. so it's not that we can win. we're not defeated, right? we know what that word defeated means. are we defeated? no, we're not defeated. right. >> harris, as you see, assured the boy that losing the presidency wasn't the end. giving him a hug before swearing his dad into office as arizona's newest senator. she then gave the boy a high five and sent him on his way, smiling. it was a sweet moment. a lot more to bring you here this friday

risk for seven types of cancer, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of cancer in america. he suggests updating the current warnings on alcoholic drinks to include cancer risk warnings, like there are on cigarette packs. alcohol warning labels have remained the same for nearly 40 years. they currently only warn of generic health problems, with specific mentions for drivers and pregnant women. >> it's not that surprising to see that these these guidelines have. the discussion has been going back and forth for so many years because the research is continuously evolving. >> congress would need to pass legislation to make a change to alcohol warning labels. governor newsom is continuing his crackdown on ultra processed foods. he signed a new executive order today. it instructs the state's public health department

to evaluate the impact of food dyes and provide recommendations on limiting any potential harm. it also instructs other agencies to look at how to limit the purchase of soda and candy through calfresh, and address food deserts, neighborhoods where there are no grocery stores. these recommendations are due by april 1st. well, this is a story we've been following very closely. oakland is temporarily closing two fire stations as the city deals with a growing budget crisis. station 25, located on butters drive and 28 on grass valley road, are being shut down on monday. they will stay closed for six months. the closures will save the city $5 million this fiscal year. oakland's fire chief says the temporary closure is happening while fire danger is low. >> we're not directly in wildland season. this was an opportunity to use a couple of our hill houses that normally

are in our high fire severity zone. we feel like we can cover these districts adequately. >> chief damon covington says the fire department looked at data analytics and picked these particular stations for temporary closure because they are not among the city's busiest. all right. now for our abc seven news advancer at 11, where we help get you ahead on the big headlines to come. this is actually more of a crab fancier. with crab season finally about to open in the bay area. usually the season opens up in the middle of november, as you know, but was delayed again by migrating whales. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn went to the docks tonight and spoke with fishermen who are anxious to drop their pots. >> crab fisherman mike harvey is happy to be back at work, excited to get going. >> finally. oh, i've been crabbing for 15 years. >> harvey is busy putting some of his crab pots away. >> we aren't allowed to use half our pots, so these are the ones that the extras and just putting

them back in the shed on thursday. >> he and his crew loaded up his 58 foot boat, vaya con dios, and headed out. they dropped 250 pots down on the ocean floor. they'll wait until sunday to start harvesting. john barnett is the president of s.f. crab boat owners association. he and his crew have already made two trips to put their gear out. >> everyone's excited. fishermen are all gearing up and putting bait on the boat this year. >> the commercial crab season in the bay area starts january 5th. last year it started january 18th. the commercial dungeness crab season usually starts in mid-november, but it's been delayed for the past few years. >> we had a delay this year because of the whales being present, and all of the issues we've been having about fishing around whales at fisherman's wharf, people are enjoying the fresh seafood, including the crab that's from oregon or canada. >> it's very tender. yeah, in a few days that crab will very likely be from the bay area. >> they'll start being out there on the sixth. i would imagine,

by then. so they'll be ready to roll. >> we really appreciate the public's patience. maybe the evening of sunday we'll have crabs off the boat sales. we'll have the crabs in the fish markets. restaurants will be getting it and that the public will have access to what they've been waiting for. >> fisherman mike harvey says the crab harvest is very promising. >> they're nice ones. >> this year in san francisco, suzanne phan. abc seven news. >> that is thirsty work. they do. we appreciate it. well, the santa cruz wharf is set to reopen much sooner than people anticipated. there will be a celebration at 10 a.m. tomorrow to welcome visitors back. 20 businesses on the pier were busy getting ready for that today, and someone from the community returned. the wharf's 100 year anniversary plaque. it went missing among the debris when part of the pier collapsed a week and a half ago. santa cruz parks and rec is encouraging the public to return any other artifacts to their office that may wash up, and that section of

the pier came down to the wharf, came down because of a rough surf, and we still have some rough surf out there. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking that for sandhya. >> yeah, dan, this is the time of year when you do need to watch out. especially if you're going to go check out those waves. and they're definitely one of those situations where you want to go see them, but see them from far away. i do want to talk about the first tornado of 2025. good evening everyone. this happened in northern california, in tehama county, and this was between cottonwood and shingletown. it was around 518 to 521 this evening near cottonwood. it was reported by a spotter. but keep in mind that this has to be inspected by the national weather service team, and then they will determine tomorrow if this was indeed a tornado. there were certainly strong thunderstorms in the area at the time, and then eventually there was that report of a tornado from a spotter. let's take a look at the sierra. it has been snowing and it is still

snowing right now, with chain controls on all roads leading up to the mountains. we did get our share of rain as well earlier in the day, the morning part of the afternoon, and even right now we are seeing a few sprinkles developing right around santa rosa, so we're not quite done with those spotty showers. here's a look at the rainfall totals. just under a half an inch in santa rosa, topping that slightly in ben lomond, 2/10 in oakland 1800, san francisco, about 1100 in san jose, and 100th of an inch in concord. here's a live view or our view. excuse me for a time lapse from the sierra tonight. it was a wintry scene, just so pretty as the snow was coming down, but not easy to get up there. here are some live pictures from here in the bay area and also up in the mountains. mount tam is showing you what you're going to have to deal with tomorrow morning, which is some fog and it is dropping visibility. half moon bay right now, four miles, three miles in livermore. so be careful as we look at live doppler seven. there are a couple of sprinkles still dotting our radar. 40s on those

temperatures and 50s it is going to be a chilly night. a beautiful view from emeryville. overnight areas of fog and they'll be dense in patches this weekend. large breaking waves and dry pattern setting up well into next week with sunnier and milder weather tomorrow morning. we begin with 30s and 40s. watch out for the fog. tomorrow afternoon you'll see a mix of sun and high clouds. 50s for your highs and then in the evening it gets cool once again. so 48 to 44 degrees in half moon bay, 37. in napa and livermore the chill will be with you. 38 in santa rosa, 44 in san jose and 40s for oakland and san francisco. tomorrow afternoon, you're looking at 50s for the entire region. a couple of 60s will pop up, and then monday we'll be seeing more 60s as we start to notice, coming up into the low and mid 60s around the bay and inland tuesday as those offshore winds develop, mid 60s, even some upper 60s heading into that midweek time period. of course, we've had our first big

wedding rains reducing our fire danger. but in southern california the offshore winds are going to really kick up and they have not had their big rain. so they're still dealing with the fire season. so next week that's going to be an issue here in the bay area. this weekend. it's a dry one morning fog tomorrow milder afternoon a little brighter sunday. and then next week we'll bump up those temperatures. i mean we're talking about low to upper 60s dan for january when you're close to 70 degrees i'd call that warm sunshine. hopefully nobody minds. >> i would call that touchdown i know right. no rain on that panel at all. >> no. but you know, we always need the rain. and of course the dry spell in january for a week or two is not unusual. we'll get it back hopefully february through april and we'll enjoy it until we do.
