opens. a look at how it's going so far. caught in the act, but still on the loose. thieves target one specific type of business, both in the east and south bay. and a faithful farewell to san francisco mayor london breed. the news at six starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> fresh catch straight from the sea. crabbers in the bay area bring in their first batch of dungeness crab today, marking the delayed start to our season. good evening and thanks for joining us i'm dion lim. commercial crab season typically starts in november but was delayed due to humpback whale migrations off the coast. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard was at fisherman's wharf when the first crab boats arrived with their catch today. >> go get some crab over here. >> the first dungeness crab catch of the season is in at

fisherman's wharf. >> it's just good to get out on the water. you know, the delays. something we're kind of used to by now. yeah. so we just roll with the flow. >> captain pat lazare says his crew on board the edward letter caught about 7 to 8000 pounds of crab overnight. the fresh catch is quickly moved into holding tanks at pier 45. the crab season normally starts before thanksgiving, but the season was delayed for the sixth year in a row by the state due to migrating whales off the coast. >> i'm just happy to work again. >> captain matt balwani's says so far, the crab catch is good. >> it wasn't as many, but the quality was very good. i think we've been averaging a little over 2 pound crab average. >> captain matt is selling his catch direct to a hungry public who waited hours in this long line. >> we're beating the super bowl rush right now. we're getting a fresh catch. can't beat that. >> the off boat crab sales are happening on a newly constructed

dock created to help salmon and crab fishermen generate income. >> salmon's been canceled for the last two years, so the crabbers are really like. this is the one chance these guys really get a chance to make money. >> it's been a really rough couple of years for the crabbers. >> turns out, san francisco supervisor aaron peskin says crab is a big deal crustacean for the local economy. >> not only in our restaurants and our stores, but this is a jumping off point for all of northern california. there are huge crab processors here, and there's a lot of people whose economies and families rely on it. >> there's a lot of nice crab, but, you know, it's kind of a little bit slow, slower than what we're used to. and on top of that, we're going with less gear, less gear now. so it's going to be hard to scratch out a paycheck. >> joey gallia is adapting to changes in the industry, but he's staying on board. >> we do it because we love it, you know, and we're good at it. >> and san francisco, cornell.

bernard, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow. it's day one in the six month closure of two oakland fire stations. the closures are part of oakland's effort to close a $129 million budget deficit. the brownouts will impact stations 25 and 28 in the oakland hills. >> right now, these two firehouses will be closed for the next six months through the through the end of the fiscal year. uh- at at the end of the fiscal year. these firehouses will open back up. and if we have a need to continue to brown out firehouses, we'll rotate to different firehouses from there. >> the fire chief says closing these firehouses until june will save oakland about $5 million, but response times will be delayed. meantime, we are working to find out more about a smoke shop burglary in west oakland. surveillance video shows a car just ramming into the front of the business. this is on san pablo avenue just after 4 a.m. by the time police got to the scene, that shop was already wrecked. there were also robberies reported at oakland

gas stations and a grocery store overnight. no word from police whether any of these cases are linked. thieves also targeted another smoke shop overnight, this one in the south bay. they hit the one stop shop exotics at a strip mall on almaden road. neighbors say the store has been targeted in the past. you can see it appears someone drove through a security gate and into the store. it's unclear right now just how much was lost in this theft. in san francisco's outer richmond district, a neighbor is reporting damage following yesterday's pipe gas gas pipe rupture in the area of 47th avenue and balboa. a resident sent us these pictures of his car's rear windshield. he says he found the damage shortly after an evacuation order was lifted. a geyser of water and gas spewed for hours after a city crew repairing a water line accidentally hit a gas line. the incident forced more than a dozen people in a two block area from their homes on the

peninsula. an apartment fire has forced 12 people to look for a new place to stay. it all happened last night on north amphlett boulevard in san mateo, where fire crews say one person was taken to the hospital. the red cross is helping fire victims. no word yet, though, on what sparked that fire. san francisco mayor elect daniel lurie is helping clean up the city ahead of his inauguration. today, he ended his weekend of service picking up trash in the lower nob hill, tenderloin and mission neighborhoods. >> we are close to a thousand people that have come out over six different trash pickups, and there's just this feeling of hopefulness and optimism. and it's a new day in san francisco. >> yesterday, lurie was out in ocean beach, ingleside, fillmore and bayview. he'll officially take the office of mayor this wednesday. his inauguration will be followed by a chinatown night market and community festival. glide memorial church held a special sunday celebration for

outgoing mayor london breed. glide's president and ceo honored breed for her impact on advancing equity, compassion and progress in the city. >> i have no doubt, mayor breed, that your best days are yet to come. i look forward to cheering you on as well as glide as you continue to fight for your dreams and for glide for many years. that's come in front of us. it doesn't change who i am, whether i'm mayor or not. i'm still london breed from the projects. i'm still london breed from san francisco. i'm still london breed. that's going to be there for glide no matter what. >> breed has served as mayor for six and a half years. tuesday is her last day in office. the city of oakland will have a new interim mayor tomorrow, but it's unclear who exactly that person will be. it's currently nikki fortunato bass, who is the city council president, but she's leaving that position to become an alameda county supervisor.

that means the city council, which has four new members, will have to elect a new president. that person will then serve as acting mayor until oakland holds a special election for a new mayor in april. well, it looks like the music will continue to play at a beloved and iconic music store in el cerrito. down home music has been in the same building on san pablo avenue for nearly 50 years. it shares the building with two nonprofits that preserve and catalog historic albums and films. now, when the building went up for sale in october, the trio of businesses worried they'd have to find a new home. now, though, they expect to be able to buy the building, all thanks to money raised and huge community support. >> you think about the old school barbershop. this is like the barbershop, but you come in here to talk. charlie parker instead of we're not talking sports, we're talking music. >> keep in mind, it's not a done deal yet. while their bid has been accepted, they still need

[vo]: of a child. starlight exists to bring happiness to hospitalized children when they need it most. because happiness matters. the former president and nobel peace prize winner is lying in repose at the carter presidential center in atlanta until tuesday morning. now, before he died, he insisted that the first event of his funeral take place there. members of the public braved the cold as they lined up to pay their respects. many were moved by the example jimmy carter and his wife rosalynn, set throughout their lives. >> i'm sad that his life is over. i'm so grateful for the legacy that he left and for the example that he left for us. >> on tuesday, the former president will be taken to washington, where he'll lie in state in the capitol rotunda.

carter's state funeral will take place thursday at washington's national cathedral, where president joe biden is expected to eulogize his longtime friend. tomorrow, congress is set to certify the 2024 presidential election, and thanks to a relatively new law, that process is expected to be much smoother than january 6th. four years ago, a violent mob you'll remember of supporters of then-president donald trump tried to stop the count and overturn the results of an election he lost to joe biden. this morning on face the nation, former house speaker nancy pelosi talked about the violence didn't end that day, as you know. >> he called out to these people to continue their violence. my husband being a victim of all of that. and it's still he still has. injuries from that attack. so it just goes on and on. it

isn't something that happens and then it's over. >> after congress certifies the vote, president trump will be inaugurated january 20th on the west front of the u.s. capitol building. nearly 3 million people will see a boost in social security payments, under a measure president biden signed today. the bill rescinds two provisions that limited social security benefits people with a public pension, including teachers, firefighters and police officers, will receive higher payments. the congressional budget office says about 2.1 million people will see a $360 increase every month by december, and another 380,000 recipients will get a $700 monthly increase. a beach warning goes into effect here in the bay area tomorrow morning, and this bird certainly knows better than to get into the water. the national weather service alerting the public to these dangerous conditions and taking a live look outside where things are looking nice and

three kings day celebration. bakeries like le major on 24th street in san francisco's mission district are selling dozens of the traditional rosca de reyes cake, its sweet, flaky pastry decorated with dried fruits and other delectable morsels symbolizing the gifts that were brought to baby jesus on epiphany. when catholics believe three wise men visited jesus to celebrate the revelation of jesus as the messiah. the cake holds a figurine, usually of the baby jesus, inside the rose and the bread that we make. >> we always put the baby in a little plastic baby inside so people take it and cut it. on the sixth. >> now if you get the plastic baby in your slice, you or your family are then in charge of

cooking tamales for everyone on february 2nd, or candelaria de. the national weather service is warning of dangerous conditions along the coast tomorrow. they say to be prepared for sneaker waves, strong rip currents and breaking waves of up to 20ft. the swell is expected to begin tomorrow morning at 4:00 and lasts through tuesday evening. it goes from mendocino county down to big sur. you are asked to stay away from the water, keep pets on a leash, and to never turn your back to the ocean. and spencer, we always see folks lining up watching the waves. as long as they stay away and keep their distance, all should be fine. >> that is the key to stay. keep your distance. stay far away from the coast. i mean, close enough to see the waves, but not close enough to be affected by them. here's a look at what's going on with our weather above the waves. looking at the satellite radar composite image, we get a few thin, high clouds moving through the bay area right now, but skies are mainly clear and the wind is mainly calm, with wind speeds generally under ten miles per hour

everywhere except sfo, where the wind speed is 12mph and it's quite a bit milder by several degrees right now than at this time yesterday. as you can see on the 24 hour temperature change, five degrees warmer in santa rosa, three degrees warmer here in san francisco than at this time last night. here's the view looking across our the embarcadero from our rooftop camera. 55 degrees here in san francisco right now. and in oakland, we also have mid to upper 50s in hayward, san jose, redwood city, and half moon bay. nice clear view from mount tam looking down onto the bay and parts of san francisco. it is 55 degrees up in santa rosa right now. petaluma 52, napa 53. down to 49. already at fairfield. low 50s at concord and livermore. and these are our forecast headlines tomorrow. we'll have some clouds in the morning. just a few but sunny skies in the afternoon. remainder of the week will be sunny and much warmer than today was. and as we look at the next seven days, it's going to be a dry pattern. no rain in sight for a while, but let's get back to that beach hazard statement, which is in effect, or will be in effect

from 4 a.m. tomorrow to 4 a.m. tuesday. wave heights are elevated, and there's the possibility of some dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves, and breaking waves may reach heights of 20ft, so bear that in mind. here's the forecast animation overnight, seeing just a few thin, high clouds passing by. they may be well, it may be a little bit cloudier in the early morning hours as we start the day than midday, but by midday we'll certainly have mainly sunny skies. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s and highs tomorrow. excuse me in the upper 50s near the coast, upper 50s to about 60 right around the bay shoreline a few locations inland. like san jose livermore. santa rosa will break the 60 degree mark tomorrow. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it is going to warm up midweek, starting on tuesday and all the way through next saturday. look for high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s near the bay and inland, and some low and low to mid 60s even on the coast. so a nice mild first full week of january

after a long, frustrating injury filled season. >> the 40 niners took the field in arizona for today's season finale. a lot of regulars out, which meant a chance for guys that you don't see often on the field, get a chance to show what they can do. george kittle, though, did play, and he uses a tablet to say, oh, hi, mom. i imagine that's how george would say it. you know, he goes, howdy. jauan jennings entered just 77 yards shy of his first 1000 yard season. mom said, don't fight, but okay, here in the end zone, i guess. ended up 25 yards short of that milestone. he got ejected midway through the second quarter after getting a couple of scuffles cards. defender was tossed, jennings firing up the faithful who made the trip. couple plays later, nine time all pro kyle juszczyk pushing in josh dobbs for the score. ricky pearsall. george kittle flying around. referencing his aerospace engineering degree. they call him the astronaut. get it? astronaut that can pass late. second quarter. dobbs finding pearsall so the astronaut connects with pearsall. third touchdown of the season. niners down three at the break. brock purdy looking on. hoping for a better year next year. and the last touchdown of the season. it's dobbs to juice. 36 yards

and kyle dives on in. dobbs a career high 326 passing yards. but the niners lose. big 4724 six and 11 season. they won just one of their final eight games. ouch. missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020. >> it just hasn't been good enough. not even close. and to be a part of that, knowing that i'm out there every game and it still isn't good enough, it obviously is a gut punch to my own pride. and yeah, i mean, obviously i'm gonna do everything to make it right, to be out there, to compete, to play at a high level was fun, exciting, exhilarating. and so it's just continuing to get those reps out there, right? get the opportunity to stand out there in those moments and be able to learn how to overcome things throughout the game in order to get a dub. >> at the end of the day, we've been processing it, ready to finish this up. trying to finish it with a win. didn't get that done today, but excited to get to this off season and figure out how to not be in this situation again. >> locker cleanout day comig

a milestone in the north bay, as one county's leadership team makes history. meet northern california's first all female board of supervisors. plus, is the end nearing for one of the bay area's best known theme parks. the bad. sign for great america. coming up tonight on abc seven news at 11. well, finally. now, while crab season is the sea delicacy of the day here in the bay area, the big fish is the big deal in japan. a tuna that weighs as much as a bear just sold for $1.3 million. michelin starred sushi restaurant tours the onodera group bought the 600 pound fish at the annual new year auction at tokyo's main fish market. the restaurant group has a few u.s. locations in hawaii, houston and los angeles. that is an awful lot of sashimi. maybe a tuna fish sandwich is not your jam, though. >> all kinds of good stuff. yeah, i guess you buy it for 1.3
