hearing from crabbers relieved to get going and customers waiting for the haul. >> and this live look this morning out of washington, d.c. as you can see, there's a record breaking winter storm that's hitting millions of americans. just as senators are preparing to meet at the capitol to certify the election. good morning to you. welcome to monday is january 6th, the first monday of the year. yeah. >> and so snowing over there. foggy here. >> yeah, it's foggy here. we have a real quiet week ahead. so this morning it's all about some thick fog developing. here's a live look outside our exploratorium camera. can't even see the skyline in san francisco this morning. that's how thick some of the fog is right now. 48 degrees in the city. we have that fog moving through. humidity is high. that's why we're seeing a lot of condensation this morning. it's not foggy everywhere. we'll take you to the south bay right now. good morning, san jose. we do have clear skies out there. temperatures right now 44 degrees underneath the clear skies in the south bay where we have the fog. it is thick this morning, generally along the coast and in the north bay. that's where we have the issues this morning. areas

like novato, napa, a quarter of a mile, zero miles visibility. so it's for that fact. we do have a dense fog advisory in effect here through 10 a.m. this morning. so this fog is going to linger for much of the morning. but it's a quiet afternoon later on today. so here's future weather. we have that fog burning off through 930 throughout the afternoon. it will be a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures pretty close to average for this time of the year. we'll go into the upper 50s and lower 60s later on today. let's check in with gloria. see, the commute is going. welcome back gloria. >> thank you. it's so good to be back on this monday morning. so right now we are following a sig alert. this is over in pescadero. there was unfortunately a fatal crash. this is causing some big backups this morning. this is some video that we have from that crash in pescadero. we know that one person has died. this was a vehicle versus a pole. both directions of highway one are now closed. this is near bean hollow road. they are shut down. and you can see that there are quite a few emergency personnel on the scene. we know chp is

investigating. the coroner is also on the site right now, and they're hoping to reopen everything by 630 this morning. so we're going to keep tracking this for you. but again, this is highway one in pescadero and both sides are shut down near bean hollow road. so we'll keep you updated on this guys. gloria. >> thank you. today in the east bay, oakland is getting another change of leadership. the city council is voting to elect a new president. and that person isnew going to take over as mayor until a special election is held in april. current president nikki fortunato bass is about to leave office to be sworn in as an alameda county supervisor. the changes in oakland's leadership come at a time when the city is facing a budget crisis, and there are major cuts on the line. we are seeing those happen this morning in a matter of hours. two fire stations are going to shut down. stations 25 and 28 are scheduled to stay closed for six months. those firefighters have moved to other locations. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in oakland, with a look at what the closures will mean. if you live

in oakland and you need help. lena. >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. we are at fire station 25 right now, and this is one of two different fire stations expected to close in about three hours and considered to be one of the least busy locations. this comes as the city tries to balance its $129 million budget deficit. the oakland fire chief explained on friday that this is a brownout process that will keep the stations closed for at least six months and save the city $5 million. it's meant to keep oakland afloat, as the city waits for long delayed money from the sale of the coliseum to go through. no firefighters will lose their jobs, but the local 55 union that represents oakland firefighters told abc seven news reporter j.r. stone it will impact response times. >> it's realistic that it's going to take 15 or 20 minutes for the surrounding companies that are already up on skyline boulevard to cover those areas. i mean, those are just facts. i'm not here to scare anybody,

but i am here to just deliver the straight facts, which is you will wait longer for a fire engine to show up. >> oakland's fire chief said data led them to these two different stations, which are among the least busy, according to the last published fire response report. oakland firefighters responded to more than 54,000 calls in 2023. fire station 28 responded to just 405. of those, fire station 25 responded to 834. both fire 25 stations will close at 8:00 this morning, and the brownouts are expected to last at least until july. live in oakland. lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, thank you. this morning, a massive winter storm is hitting washington, d.c, just as congress is set to certify donald trump's win in november's election. and, gloria, this is the last step before trump's inauguration. and security is extremely high today. >> it is. amanda, for the first time ever, the certification of the presidential election has been designated a special security event in washington,

d.c, at the request of the city's mayor. this is all part of an effort to prevent violence like we saw four years ago from ever happening again. and fencing is up all around the u.s. capitol building. the national guard is in place, and about 4000 additional police officers from around the country have been brought in as support. overnight, the u.s. attorney's office revealed it's evaluating whether to bring charges in roughly 200 new cases from january 6th, 2021. nearly 1600 people have faced charges so far. president biden urging newly elected members of congress to stand up for democracy. >> now it's your duty to tell the truth, to remember what happened and not let january 6th be rewritten as, or even erased. >> security will remain heightened in washington, d.c. for much of this month. thursday is the state funeral for former president jimmy carter. his body will be flown to washington, d.c, tomorrow to lie in state ahead of his funeral. donald trump's inauguration day is on

january 20th. reggie. >> thank you. >> new this morning, president biden makes a move in his final days in office to ban offshore oil and natural gas drilling in parts of the atlantic and pacific. the president announced an executive order that would block drilling in more than 625 million acres of u.s. oceans. he says drilling could cause irreversible damage to coastal communities and is not necessary to meet the country's energy needs. if incoming president donald trump wants to reverse the ban, he would need to get approval from from congress. >> in san francisco, advocates are putting attention on what they're calling environmental racism in the bayview and hunters point neighborhoods. we are unstoppable. >> a clean world is possible. we want it. >> over the weekend, all things bayview and gray panthers protested the darling international rendering plant. the company turns meat waste into other products like fertilizer and pet food. residents have been complaining

for years, saying it amidst toxic odors, and claims the area, quote, reeks of death. >> my heart is full because we know that it takes everyone to get this done. not the government agencies, not the mayor's office, not the board of supervisors. but it's our community partners and our allies. that's the reason why they're considering leaving, and we want to let them know that we want them to leave. >> the company responded to the protests, saying they strive to be a good corporate citizen and neighbor and have, quote, comprehensive processes then and protocols that are part of their day to day operations. fresh catch straight from the sea. crabbers in the bay area brought in their first batch of dungeness crab yesterday, marking the delayed start to the season. >> commercial crab season typically starts in november but got delayed because of humpback whale migrations off the coast. the timing and other issues have put these crabbers in a tough position. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard was at

fisherman's wharf when the first boats arrived. >> go get some crab over here. >> the first dungeness crab catch of the season is in at fisherman's wharf. >> it's just good to get out on the water. you know, the delays. something we're kind of used to by now. yeah. so we just roll with the flow. >> captain pat lazzari says his crew on board the edward letter caught about 7 to 8000 pounds of crab overnight. the fresh catch is quickly moved into holding tanks at pier 45. crab season normally starts before thanksgiving, but the season was delayed for the sixth year in a row by the state due to migrating whales off the coast. >> i'm just happy to work again. >> captain matt balwani's says so far, the crab catch is good. >> it wasn't as many, but the quality was very good. i think we've been averaging a little over 2 pound crab average. >> captain matt is selling his catch direct to a hungry public who waited hours in this long

line. >> we're beating the super bowl rush right now. we're getting a fresh catch. can't beat that. >> the off boat crab sales are happening on a newly constructed dock created to help salmon and crab fishermen generate income. >> salmon's been canceled for the last two years, so the crabbers are really like. this is the one chance these guys really get a chance to make money. >> it's been a really rough couple of years for the crabbers. >> turns out san francisco supervisor aaron peskin says crab is a big deal crustacean for the local economy. >> not only in our restaurants and our stores, but this is a jumping off point for all of northern california. there are huge crab processors here, and there's a lot of people whose economies and families rely on it. >> there's a lot of nice crab, but, you know, it's kind of a little bit slow, slower than what we're used to. and on top of that, we're going with less gear, less gear now. so it's going to be hard to scratch out a paycheck. >> joey gallia is adapting to

changes in the industry, but he's staying on board. >> we do it because we love it, you know, and we're good at it. >> and san francisco, cornell, bernard, abc seven news. >> the national weather service is warning of dangerous conditions along the coast today. they say to be prepared for sneaker waves, strong rip currents and breaking waves up to 20ft. the swell began this morning at 4:00 and is expected to last through tomorrow evening. it goes from mendocino county down to big sur. you are asked to stay away from the water, keep pets on a leash, and never turn your back to the ocean. >> those are some really good tips in the accuweather forecast. amanda, we're tracking that beach hazard statement along the coast, and we're also tracking some foggy areas this morning. you're looking live in the north bay where you can see the headlights on 101, really showing you that fog this morning in santa rosa, especially right now, visibility down to less than half of a mile. so we are dealing with some thick fog this morning in the north bay. we do have a dense fog advisory in effect through 9 a.m. for the north bay, as this fog

will linger for much of the morning. again, good idea. use those low beams. add some extra distance to the cars around you because we're down to zero miles in novato. that's as bad as it gets. that's thick fog right now. a quarter of a mile in napa along the coast. we're having some issues as well. half moon bay also coming in with zero miles visibility. so a live look at our golden gate bridge camera. you can see along the coast. we are dealing with that low cloud cover this morning. we'll have that fog mainly along the coast and in the north bay through about 9 a.m. the farther south you go, we are clear. so the south bay, clear skies, no issues with fog this morning. it's a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. it is quiet. it's nice. upper 50s to the lower 60s, so a high of 60 in oakland will go to 62. in san jose, 59 in the city, 63 in santa rosa. hit about 58 in half moon bay. once we burn off that fog. looking at the three day forecast, it is sunny tomorrow and wednesday will find temperatures above average. but as we head into tomorrow, we do have a windy night on the way. reggie. we'll show you those wind

a look at washington, d.c. this morning. millions of americans are facing an intense winter storm from the midwest to the east coast. for some, this is the biggest snow storm in a decade. blizzard conditions could bring 15in of snow to parts of kansas and missouri. the snow has already caused some terrible driving conditions, and at least one person has died in a crash in cincinnati, ohio. people were trapped on interstate 71 for more than seven hours after semi trucks got stuck in the snow. >> just yelled down to one of

the drivers who was standing there who got out to basically stretch his legs, and i yelled at him and i said, hey, how long have you been here? he said, three hours. that was an hour ago and there's still been no move. >> schools and government offices in several states are closed today. if you do have plans to fly east, be prepared. 9300 flights were delayed or canceled yesterday and more of the same is expected today. today, governor newsom will be giving an update on california's high speed rail project. he's set to appear in kern county with the ceo of the high speed rail authority. phase one of california's bullet train of project will eventually connect san francisco to l.a. the first 171 miles of track are currently under construction. that's between merced and bakersfield. despite that progress, construction is billions of dollars over budget. and it isn't even clear if the incoming trump administration will continue to provide federal funding for the project. >> in the north bay, a popular

mexican restaurant is closed for good following a federal investigation into child labor laws being violated. casa has been in napa for 15 years. the u.s. department of labor says the restaurant allowed children to work outside, permitted hours during school days, and operate hazardous equipment. the restaurant has disputed these allegations. the department of labor fined the business more than $45,000. see casa's website did not list a specific reason for the closure. the owner of the oxbow public market, where casa was located, told the press democrat the pandemic was a factor. >> building a better bay area is our mission here at abc seven news, and this morning we have two breakthroughs to share for women in local government. >> for the first time in its history, napa county's board of supervisors is made up of all women. the newest members took the oath of office saturday. napa county is the second county in the state to have an all women board. it follows los angeles county. >> it's a message to all,

including our daughters and our sons, that we as a community are helping to open up the possibilities of who can be a leader. it means more opportunity for everyone. >> the new supervisors have varied backgrounds, including nonprofit work and experience in community based organizations. there are multiple attorneys and a scientist. the board officially gets started tomorrow. >> our other breakthrough, sonoma county, will have more female judges than male judges. it's the first time that's happened. they'll have 11 women and nine men on the roster. the county swears in the new judges later today. experts say diversity among judges helps better ensure fairness in the courtroom. >> a busy weekend for many mexican bakeries in the bay area. ahead of today's three kings day celebrations, bakeries like la mejor on 24th street in san francisco's mission district are selling dozens of the traditional rosca de reyes cake. it's a sweet, flaky pastry decorated with dried fruits and other morsels, symbolizing the gifts that were brought to baby

minutes. up to eight miles. just a few minutes ago we were at zero miles visibility. but we're still having issues in the north bay, and that is where we do have the dense fog advisory this morning. this will last until 10 a.m. so taking a look at temperatures right now, we're in the low 40s to the low 50s. good morning saint helena 41. we're at 48 in the city, 44, in san jose. livermore right now, coming in one of the colder spots at 39 degrees. so here's live doppler seven along with satellite. you do see this fast moving piece of energy to our north that's now in nevada. and this is an area of low pressure that as it slides down the great basin, it is going to kick up our winds later on tonight and tomorrow morning. in fact, winds will be very strong across southern california. another red flag warning has been issued for those areas across la. that is because southern california has really yet to see a drop of rain this season. quite a different story in northern california where we've seen several storms. that is why the red flag warning is in effect down south. so back here at home today, we'll go into the upper 50s, lower 60s under a mix of sun and clouds overnight tonight the

especially here in the bay area. they work well most of the time. reporter adam mintzer introduces us to one man in phoenix, who experienced a glitch during a waymo ride that left him driving in circles. >> yeah, i got a flight to catch. why is this thing going in a circle? i'm getting dizzy. stuck in a loop. look at what it's doing. >> on monday, waymo passenger mike johns took an unexpected detour to the airport when his autonomous car kept driving around a small traffic circle in a north scottsdale parking lot. >> it literally was just going in a loop. >> john suspects the area's layout led to the car getting confused. he says after several minutes of circling and about eight laps, a voice came over the speakers. >> if you have your app pulled up, i need you to tap my trip on the lower left corner of your app. >> can't you just do it? you should be able to handle it. take over the car. you don't need my phone. >> a tech worker himself, john, says he supports the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles. but when he was late for his flight and didn't know how to manually open the locked

doors, he felt powerless. >> if we got to the 10th loop, do i need to jump into the driver's seat? what happens there? what happens next? because the car is still in control, i can bench press 300 plus, but am i able to control this? is somebody playing a joke on me? >> this was john's second waymo ride, and he left feeling like a guinea pig rather than a guest. >> it's like people are the experiment. >> we reached out to waymo for comment saturday. they haven't responded. on its website, the company says it's on a mission to be the world's most trusted driver. and in its first 25 million miles on the road, waymo claims their cars had 81% fewer airbag deployments and 57 fewer police reported incidents compared to human drivers. while waymo says its phone, a friend style customer service system, can remotely check the car's sensors and cameras to assist passengers, johns was surprised customer service couldn't do more. >> well, can you stop this car? >> i am trying to pull it over

impact your visit to california's great america. >> public safety may be the price to pay for a budget shortfall in the east bay. the fire station shutting their doors this morning, and how it will impact emergency response in the community. >> good morning. it's monday, january 6th. >> be careful out there because it's very foggy. drew. >> yeah it is, especially along the coast and in the north bay and across parts of the city right now. so here's a live look outside our exploratorium camera. the visibility has been ebbing and flowing this morning, so this picture looks a lot better than, say, about 30 minutes ago. but still, visibility is down about three miles here in the city. 49 degrees with that fog overhead. but it's not everywhere. we'll take you to oakland right now. okay, camera. it is totally clear. so that fog is not area wide, but where we have it, it is thick. 45 right now in oakland. here's our visibility map. and you can see clearly in the north bay. that's where having a lot of issues from novato to fairfield down to zero mile, visibility about a quarter of a mile from santa rosa to napa. this is where we have a dense fog advisory in effect until about 10 a.m.

this morning. so use those low beam low beams and add some extra distance to the cars around you throughout the day. it's a mix of sun and clouds. it looks very nice. this afternoon we'll get those temperatures into the upper 50s and lower 60s pretty close to average for this time of the year. let's check in with gloria to see how we're doing on the roads this morning. good morning. >> you know, overall, drew, we are seeing a pretty quiet morning on the roads on this monday. you can see mostly green. however, we do see that red in the altamont pass. it looks like that holiday traffic no longer the case because people are back to work this morning. it seems like we're seeing that slow down that we usually see there pretty much again in the altamont pass from westbound 205 to westbound 580. so a lot busier this morning than we've seen the last few weeks. however, we are following a sigalert in pescadero. this is on highwy one. and right now we have both northbound and southbound directions that are shut down there in that area because of a fatal crash that occurred about 1:00 this morning. and we're told that there was a vehicle

that landed into a tree, slammed into a tree there. so this was a solo vehicle crash. however, there's still crews there on the scene. it was a fatal crash, and they're hoping to reopen by 630 this morning. but right now, still big delays in that area. >> okay, gloria. thank you. this morning, we're about to see the impact of the budget cuts oakland is facing. in just a matter of hours, two fire stations will close its doors. fire stations 25 and 28 will shut down for at least six months. you can see the locations on the screen there, both in the hills. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in oakland. with what the closures will mean for emergency response in the city and how neighbors are reacting. lena. >> reggie. neighbors of fire station 25 here say they're concerned about increased response times, and they say that their loss is alarming. this these closures come as the city is trying to balance a $129 million budget deficit. we talked to one neighbor who said it was a consideration when they bought their house here in the

oakland hills to have a fire house this close in proximity. back in october, the keller fire burned 15 acres in the oakland hills and damaged at least two homes and displaced hundreds of residents. the union representing oakland firefighters says fire trucks from closing stations 25 and 28 were among the first there. >> absolutely. they were among the first companies that were on scene fighting that fire. so without a doubt that that entire incident would have gone very differently with the absence of just these two fire engines, for sure. >> a lot of trees, a lot of houses, a lot of big houses. and it gets really dry in the summer. so yeah, that's scary. >> the oakland fire chief explained on friday that this is a brownout process that will keep the stations closed for at least six months and save the city $5 million, he added. these are considered to be the least busy stations in the city. fire firefighters from these stations will now move to other fire stations, and these closures are expected to last at least

attack, and the fbi released this video here that shows him wearing the glasses, the meta glasses, and he was riding a bicycle around the french quarter. they're also giving us a detailed timeline of the attack, saying that he drove from texas, arriving in new orleans around 10 p.m. on new year's eve. and then at 12:15 a.m, he set a fire inside a house that he had rented in the city. 153 he can be seen placing a cooler, which authorities say contained an ied, on bourbon street, and about a half hour later, he places another one nearby. at 315 is when he races rented pickup truck down bourbon street, killing 14 and injuring dozens. authorities say that more people could have been killed, but the fire in the rental home burned out before it could spread, and the detonator in the ieds failed. >> lone actors or small cells of individuals who typically radicalize to violence online and who primarily use easily

a year because of previous storms. >> how quickly could we get this wharf open safely? that's the most important economic development action we can take is get the wharf open so they can resume their businesses. >> engineers say the wharf is structurally sound, but mayor keeley says climate change is having an impact and will affect the wharf's future. >> now to a story we've been following here at abc seven news. new testing shows a popular east bay park is safe after there were concerns about elevated radiation. documents detail decades of toxic dumping by the former stauffer chemical company, later acquired by zeneca. some of that dumping ended up at the city of berkeley landfill, which we now know as cesar chavez park. the berkeley city manager now says testing from the fall shows the land does not pose a risk to water quality or human health, though they found some tough to access. groundwater had elevated levels of radiation.
