>> we want to look for ofd or ol. that can indicate there's more sugars contributing to it. also look for preservatives, potassium sorbate or maybe artificial coloring. that can help identify something that's highly ultraprocessed. what the goal would be is choose some plain yogurt. and then with the plain yogurt, add something to that. adding some fruit or nuts and maybe even honey, you control the ingredients. >> robin: right right right. there's something you say we can look if there's a ratio between the sodium and calories? >> again, this is not scientific fact. it's just an easy, quick tip. if you're looking at your nutrition label and it has the grams, milligrams. of sodium. you can get a ball park figure of the calories. if we have 100 calories, maybe it's 140, grams of sodium. we want to keep the sodium to around 400 per meal. for many 2,300mg a day which is
8:20 am
equal to about a tea spoon. for some populations it is going to be about 1,500. so for those that need to limit sodium, go a little bit less. >> robin: just be mindful. i like raspberries. do you mind if i have one? okay. i know. little basket here. we thank you. we thank all of our guests. you can join the five day "new york times" ultraprocessed challenge. tomorrow we get expert answers to your questions about glp-1 weight loss drugs. you know all the rage about that. all right. let's go back to ginger in washington. >> ginger: hey, robin. as chilly as we are here, we were looking at numbers from galveston texas. record high 76. this morning houston has fallen below freezing for the first time. certainly the coldest air of the season. the wind chill is the 20s, if not the teens in some areas outside the city.

[ laughter ] and then folks at 20th and abc said, let's expand it. i wanted to be a car

restorator. restoration. i love people that build and rebuild rather than get new stuff. so you combine all that. by the way, i'm also doing santa claus, the series, for you on disney+. i couldn't possibly do both of these. they go, oh, yeah, you are doing that show for us. [ laughter ] i didn't think you'd actually really do it. it was a weird conversation. we could start in january. no, i'm doing a show for you presently. >> robin: they didn't care. >> they rarely do. you know the bosses, they just move us around. 8:33 am
it really feels like back home. i love abc. i love this network. i love to be able to do this. there's nothing like a live audience. i love doing standup. i like doing movies. the live audience, i bs a lot back and forth. i said shawn, who plays gabriel -- character, william scott, i believe. did i get his name right? >> rebecca: well done. >> anyway, he said, is this a live audience? he's never done it. it's infectious. >> robin: it is. >> if you haven't done it, it's almost like theater. i remember rodney dangerfield was on "home improvement." every time the crowd laughed he'd go, yeah, how you doing? [ laughter ] yeah, hey, hey. rodney, you can't actually talk to them. they're laughing at me. how you do, everybody? [ laughter ] rodney, all right. cut! we got to start again. you can't look. so it's fun to play them. difficulty for me, i have directed a few episodes. not this year, but i will. i've done "last man standing."
8:34 am
you can't use the live audience laughter sometimes. sometimes -- episode 3 with the grandson in this. so good in this. he's doing a scene with me where he says, i'm helping him with his homework. he has a learning disability, we think, in the show. and he says, what are you studying? let me help you. world war ii. i said that's my forte. i love world war ii. he said, i bet. you probably had a lot of fun fighting those germans. i said, that's world war ii. that would make me 108. kid kept looking at me like -- [ laughter ] we just waited. we never used that joke. it was just nuts. >> lara: the live audience does add a layer of energy to it. i want to show everybody a clip. here's an exclusive clip. >> why are my grand kids in the car? >> i told them to wait there so they can catch up loudly. [ laughter ] also to call the cops, if necessary.
8:35 am
>> what are you doing here like this? is there something wrong with the car? >> the car is the one thing that's doing great. >> it's 'cause when i build stuff, it's built to last. >> except our relationship. >> that's pretty much on you, riley. >> that's on us. like the only thing we did together. [ laughter ] can we try to talk to each other like rational adults? >> have you watched the news lately? that's not a thing anymore. [ laughter ] >> lara: so good. your co-star is just awesome. you have a really special chemistry. >> it's been remarkable. the whole cast, it looks like we've been doing this for years. i'm blessed to be part of this. i keep thinking -- i don't even know tom brady. how did it feel to go back to tampa after being super bowl guy. now i'm back in it. as a veteran, sometimes it's not funny to them, but i say, do i need 28-year-old staff members telling me how to do comedy? >> lara: right. >> i get into this and i go, you
8:36 am
know, this thing needs a jockey. i need the horse groomed. the crew does everything. eventually, i have to ride the horse. you can't ride with me. we'd still like you to do it like this. not really gonna do it like that. we got an emotional beat in this that i really like. the guy is dealing with grieving, what it would mean like to lose the love of your life. then the catch, riley is my daughter. one scene, we both had trouble with. it was a beautiful scene in the pilot where she finds there's a mixer that i haven't thrown out that we made biscuits with. we had trouble -- when i read it, i had trouble with it. when i did it, we had trouble with it. the crew crying probably because they missed craft service. the food supply. when are we gonna get done with this so we can eat? the fact that we went deep in that. even people saw what makes the comedy jump.
8:37 am
cat, it's like we're father/daughter. >> rebecca: totally. >> she's just freaking terrific. >> rebecca: i have spent a life time from when i was a kid watching you in "home improvement" and loving that show. i love that my kids are watching "toy story." "toy story 5" is coming. buzz lightyear is coming again. >> is there like a real creepy organization? don't talk about it. they shut the studio down. "toy story 5" we've already begun. we're in the third act now. it's remarkable what they've done. typically with pixar, they don't typically say what i can say. [ laughter ] they didn't tell us up until the last minute, you'll be here friday. animation set is on the disney lot. are we starting? you will be starting. [ laughter ] i wish i could -- there's a lot of real intrigue with buzz.
8:38 am
it's -- jessie's got a big trouble and she needs help. so it's a really cool thing. i'm startled because it's a big part of my life. i love that character. i'm a sci-fi guy. i always think with star wars, did you go too far? some people thought we went too far with 4. >> rebecca: i don't think my kids would agree. keep going. >> george: we cannot wait for 5. thank you for coming in. "new york times" number one bestselling author gabby
8:42 am
bernstein's tenth book just came out called "self help." this is your chance to change your life. boy did you change my life a couple years ago. great to see you again. >> always great to be with you. >> robin: i remember couple years ago, what are you gonna say yes to? what are you gonna say yes to? i just blurted out, i'm gonna say yes to marriage. something amber and i had been talking about. when i put it out into the universe like that -- >> you launched it. >> robin: wow, yeah. it's something you just -- you have a way of really tapping into people. this book, i'm about halfway through. i told you i was rushing through it. i didn't want to rush through it. it is the ultimate manifestation of intentions, you say. how so? >> well, robin. you know this. we manifest what we believe. what we often start to feel in our life is based on beliefs that we really don't want to be experiencing. when we start to shift our core beliefs and focus on our core beliefs, that's when we begin to
8:43 am
manifest more of what we do want. it's the healing of those core beliefs that's required. >> robin: i love how you said it's about intentions, not resolutions. >> i don't love coming into the year with major resolutions. i think it's just setting yourself up for failure. it feels like you have something to fix. i'm much more about compassionate connection in word and setting intentions that are positive and focusing on what it is that you want to create rather than fix. >> robin: there's something i was not familiar with and that's ifs, internal family systems therapy. when i was reading that, it made me want to know more about it. tell folks what it is. it's throughout the book. >> this is a book based on a therapy called internal family systems therapy founded by a dear friend of mine. i practice this therapy. i went on to get trained in the model. once i had that experience, i realized this has changed me so much, it's my job to demystify and democratize this work and make sure people can experience this safely in a self-help platform.
8:44 am
so with his blessing, i wrote this book "self help" which takes you through a four step check-in process that's based on principles of this world renown therapy. >> robin: and how do we apply that in our day to day life? >> it's simple. we all have beliefs. we manifest what we believe. we carry beliefs that are young beliefs that we had for all our lives that often repurpose in ways we don't want to. this is checking in with those belief systems. the first step is notice the belief system and choose to check in. instead of checking out, picking up a drink or food, we would check inward focusing our attention inward. the second step is to become curious about that belief or that pattern. you ask questions. where do i feel that in my body? what do i notice about this? what do i know about it? how long has it been around? is there a feeling or sensation attached to it? third step is compassionately connect to the belief and say, what do you need? what do you need?
8:45 am
and once you've gone through those three steps a real shift will occur inside. that's where the fourth step starts to come in. this is where the inner healer, your self energy, compassion might come through. you check for these deep qualities of compassion, connection, curiosity, calmness. you'll feel more calm. maybe you feel more courageous or creative. these steps are designed to help you check in with these belief systems and habits instead of keep checking out. we spend so much time checking out. this is the practice of checking in to see how we can heal ourselves. >> robin: you gently -- i won't say push the reader but you say, if you're ready for this. there's different times in the book where you say, let's check in now. the real key was what you said about compassion and why am i feeling anxious? why am i feeling this? often times it goes back to your childhood. >> all of it does, yeah. this is deep work but it's made simply. it's also for the willing.
8:46 am
i put in big orange letters self-help. you know who you are if you're the reader of this book. it's for anyone who wants to transform their lives. i can guarantee it because i lived it. i practice this overand over repeated daily and it has changed my life. >> robin: you have changed so many lives, mine included. thank you. always a pleasure. >> i love you. >> it's mutual. >> i love being here with you in the new year. >> robin: it just really sets the tone for myself and so many others here on "gma." bless you. "self-help" is out now. for additional tips from gabby to start strong in 2025, go to our website, good morning america.com. coming up james longman is here in times square talking about his new memoir. so come on back. thank you, gabby.

history. so glad you're here with us. i just finished the book. i could not put it down. i could hear you as i was reading it. i could hear your voice sharing this deeply personal story. >> yeah. look, i mean, basically, my father had schizophrenia. he, sadly, ended his life. his brother has schizophrenia. my grandfather also ended his life. my mother has clinical depression. i have had deep sadness. i know that's a lot for this time of the morning, right? the point of the book is to give people hope. that's what this is about. >> lara: it does. >> there's so much shame associated with these issues. the idea is to punch through that shame and to tell people that there is a path forward. you know, it's a bit of a mystery. i'm unravelling who he was. when someone ends his life, that's the only thing everyone kind of remembers and that defines them. so much was kept from me. there was so such secrecy. it is a journey of finding him and who he was away from that

illness. i tracked down people from his life. we found 120 pages of medical records. i found his carers who had written notes. i found a woman who lives 20 minutes from me. she comes over to my house. she just hugged me on my doorstep. it was just these things. when someone dies by suicide, it is like a bomb going off. it kills the person and injures everybody else. the book i hope heals some relationships. >> george: the other way to punch through that shame is by doing a deep dive into genetics. >> i want to understand what's going on on a chemical level. on a molecular, scientific level. what's going on in genetics? it's important. basically, people can find hope with the idea that their medications might improve if we have a better understanding of the genetics. don't stigmatize it, but there are genetic links. about 40% genetic predisposition 60% environment. but what's really fascinating, over the last five years they've made leaps and bounds in this which will mean people at home
8:51 am
today on anti-depressants. it's like trial and error. you keep get given a pill, see if that work. with genetic research there will be a day when, hopefully, it will be much more tailored to the individual. there's the world of genetics which is the 98% of our genetics, which is basically software. you can turn your dispositions up and down. you can inherit the capacity to heal. you can give the capacity to heal to your children which is, i think, beautiful. >> robin: so beautiful. do you know what is beautiful? your husband alex. i know you have said how much he has helped you. talk about community and how necessary that is. >> look, when people have these illnesses in families, they often get cut off. people with schizophrenia, it sounds scary. it's like a terrifying word. people feel like they're dangerous. but you need family so much. whatever your family might be. i'm honest that my family is really badly injured by this.
8:52 am
alex, to me, has just been my savior. i love him so much. there he is. he's just a beautiful human being. if you find people in your life that can get you through that's what you need. community is so powerful. i do want to add at the moment he is going through something appalling. his sister has been in a coma since new year's eve. she's got a really bad infection. she's fighting for her life. she gave us these on christmas day. each of us have bracelets. she's such a giving person. she gives us gifts all the time. each of us are wearing these. george, when you wake up, you will see this and you'll wonder why such a fuss was made for you. she's such a beautiful human. but, yeah, family is so important. >> rebecca: we are thinking of her and your family. alex sent you a message. let's take a look. >> as i can't be there in new york with you this week, i just wanted to send you a quick video message and say how proud we are of you, everything you achieved.

it's a momentous and important piece of work. i can't wait for everyone to read the book and fall in love with you. i love you. i'm really proud of you. i can't wait to see you soon. >> he's just really a special person. without him, you know, i wouldn't be doing any of this. i didn't become a journalist to depress people. i became a journalist to give people hope. that's what the book's about. >> lara: it does just that. everybody, talk about a journalist. the deep dives that you take. i know you're not a scientist. you make it very clear in the book. was not your favorite subject. but you nail it. you nail it. you really unlock a lot of secrets. and you're gonna help so many people. it's just an incredible story. >> robin: yes, congratulations. >> lara: i hope everybody will read it. it is called "the inherited mind" and it is out tomorrow. congratulations. >> thank you. thanks so much. >> lara: we'll be right back.
