supporting yourself. >> getting off the streets isn't easy, and new numbers show the homeless crisis is getting worse here in the bay area and statewide. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. the numbers from the u.s. census bureau are staggering, really. an estimated 187,000 homeless people living on the streets statewide, 3% more than last year. here in the bay area, the homeless population grew 6% to nearly 39,000 people in 2024. that's a new high. >> abc seven news reporter dustin dorsey breaks down the numbers by county, and shows you what one city is doing to try to get a handle on the crisis. >> addressing the humanitarian crisis on our streets is a top priority for bay area cities and counties. but despite efforts to house the thousands of unhoused, the numbers are increasing. the u.s. department of housing and urban development found a 3% rise in the bay area's nine counties to nearly 39,000 homeless, like san jose's jon magne.

>> for me, once i got unhoused, once you're out here unhoused, it feels like it's climbing up a hill to try to get back into the day to day work system of supporting yourself. >> homelessness is up nationwide and in california, where the total is more than 187,000 people. two thirds of them are on the streets unsheltered. the report found that san francisco has the highest number of unhoused per capita. about one in every 100 residents are homeless. alameda, santa clara, sonoma and marin counties round out the top five. here in the south bay, there are more than 10,000 unhoused residents, the most of any bay area county. san jose mayor matt mehan wants to help bring those staggering statistics down in 2025. >> we have an opportunity to really significantly bring down the number of people living outdoors in tent encampments, without any infrastructure, any supportive services. we need to end this era of encampments. >> and he says that will happen by adding more affordable housing, improving mental health resources at the county level, and requiring people to move off

the streets and into 1000 new safe and managed places the city hopes to open this year. magni has hoped for these plans and what they might bring for himself and the thousands of others like him. there are more resources, ways to get you guys stabilized and into permanent housing eventually. do you believe those numbers will go down? >> yeah, i believe making making more sites accessible to for people to know that are out here where they might be, where they could go to try to reach out to somebody with this camp here. i would love to be the last one here and see everybody else get the housing first, meaning next year's report will show less suffering on streets across the state and beyond. >> in san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> the city of oakland has a new interim mayor. council member kevin jenkins was voted in as the new council president today, which gave him the role of interim mayor. he's currently the third mayor of oakland. in the last month, after the recall of shengtao. >> we have issues, we have our challenges. but this is a resilient city, and we have a new council that's going to work hard to restore the trust in the

city and restore the trust in this government. >> outgoing city council president nikki fortunato bass had the interim mayor's job after tao's departure. she recently left the council to be sworn in as an alameda county supervisor. oakland will hold a special election for a new mayor in april, and it seems pretty clear that former east bay congresswoman barbara lee is preparing to run for mayor of oakland. >> today, we learned that she has filed a paperwork with the city of oakland and the california secretary of state's office under the name barbara lee for oakland mayor 2025. so there you go. representatives for lee are not immediately available for comment. today. and last friday, she told us that she has not yet made up her mind about running for mayor. the new mayor will be selected in a special election on april 15th, an important step in the change of leadership in the u.s. took place in washington, d.c. today. >> congress certified the results of donald trump's november election victory. but unlike four years ago today, when trump supporters stormed the u.s. capitol trying to

overturn the presidential election. today it was peaceful. abc seven news reporter luz pena shows us how local lawmakers are reflecting on today's transition and the chaos four years ago. >> congress officially certified president elect donald trump's victory. the one reading the final tally. his opponent, vice president kamala harris. >> donald j. trump of the state of florida has received 312 votes. kamala harris. >> the bay area native, stood next to speaker of the house mike johnson as she read the results to a packed house chamber. >> one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power. and today, i did what i have done my entire career, which is take seriously the oath that i have taken many times to support and defend the constitution of the united states.

>> in the bay area, a group of trump supporters celebrated this victory on an overpass in contra costa county. >> today, we're really grateful that so many americans have woken up and realized that the values of the trump agenda bless all americans. >> this day also serves as a reminder of the violence that erupted when a group of trump supporters stormed the u.s. capitol in 2021. many congress members, reflecting back four years later, one of the most horrific days in my entire life. >> it was a very difficult time for the members that were stranded 45 minutes face down, hearing a gunshot. >> i've been thinking a lot about the police officers who stood up to the mob and saved my life. >> recently, charges against president elect donald trump were dropped in the criminal case of an alleged scheme to overturn the 2020 election.

congresswoman zoe lofgren, who represents santa clara, says she will continue to work for what is best for america. >> our job, as it was four years ago, is simply to count the votes that the american people have cast, and we did that today in san francisco. >> luz pena, abc seven news. >> tonight, incoming president donald trump is calling president biden's new ban on future offshore oil and gas development, quote, ridiculous. mr. biden took executive action that will prevent oil companies from leasing waters for new drilling along the entire west and east coasts, the eastern gulf of mexico and portions of alaska's northern bering sea. the law invokes the 1953 outer continental shelf lands act. that's significant because the law prevents presidents from revoking the action, meaning donald trump would have to get congress to change it before he could reverse biden's move. trump says he plans to do just that, saying, quote, i'll unban

it. >> today, we're learning of the first human death from the bird flu in the u.s. health officials say the person lived in louisiana and was hospitalized after the virus after being exposed to a backyard flock of birds and wild birds. they were over 65 years old and had underlying medical conditions, the cdc says the overall risk to the public remains low. however, people who keep chickens and other birds in their backyards are at a higher risk for bird flu. so are workers on dairy and poultry farms. the bird flu has been hitting the egg supply hard here in the bay area, as well as nationwide. the limited supply is driving prices way up, averaging about $8.90 a dozen. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn shows us how local bakeries and restaurants are dealing with the shortage and the higher prices. >> if you're looking for eggs, you may be shocked at what you see at the safeway in san francisco. you'll see empty shelves and a sign showing eggs going for 9.99 a dozen. if you're buying organic eggs. >> that's too much. that's

crazy. really? >> at trader joe's on bay street, eggs go for 3.99 to 6.49 a dozen. the shelves there are also empty. >> i tried to buy them yesterday and they actually didn't have any in stock. >> the supply of eggs in california is really taking a big hit because of the bird flu. >> you can still get eggs for 5 or $6 a dozen and upwards of 9 or $10 if you're buying organic eggs. but until we can get this under control, there's going to be a limited supply of eggs. >> at victoria pastry company in north beach, where they make all their cakes and cookies by hand. eggs are a key ingredient since october. >> late october prices are just high, high, high, high. and today i was wondering when this is going to stop. >> it makes it a little bit. at moe's grill. customers come for the omelets as well as the burgers. the restaurant goes through a case of 180 eggs a day. two cases a day on the weekends.

>> most of the eggs we use is for omelets. >> the owner says the cost of a case of eggs is way up. >> it has gone up five times. >> usually these organic eggs are twice the cost of regular eggs. but the restaurant owner here tells me today they're all the same price. hussain malik tells abc seven news that when he can't find regular eggs from his supplier, he tries to buy organic eggs. >> what i do is i have to go and look around for it at costco's. >> many people wonder how long the egg shortage will last. according to bill mattos with the california poultry foundation, the supply of california eggs has dropped 40% compared to this time last year. >> our farmers are working very hard to refill those cage, those cage free operations and get your fresh eggs to market as soon as possible. i'm hopeful that that will start happening within the next month, and by easter, you'll see a good supply of eggs at a good price. >> in san francisco, suzanne phan, abc seven news. >> safeway is getting ready to close its location in san

francisco's fillmore district. long lines formed in the fog this morning after the company discounted most of its merchandise as its webster street store. shoppers hoping to take advantage of those money saving discounts uh. many are disappointed, though, that they are about to lose a vital community resource. safeway says the store is scheduled to close for good on february 7th, honoring jimmy carter's legacy. >> up next, memories from a south bay family who lives in one of the homes the late former president helped build. >> and later, after so many setbacks and roadblocks, finally, a milestone for california's high speed rail project. abc

is at the carter presidential center in atlanta. tomorrow morning, his body will be taken to washington, where he will lie in state in the capitol rotunda.

carter's state funeral will then take place on thursday at washington's national cathedral, where president joe biden is expected to eulogize his longtime friend. abc news, of course, will provide live coverage, and jimmy carter is being remembered very fondly across the nation and certainly right here in the bay area. >> one south bay family is extremely grateful to him for the time, energy and dedication he showed to habitat for humanity. they actually live in a home that he helped build more than a decade ago. >> he was so passionate about that cause. and abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in san jose with the family's story. zach. >> yeah, it was back in 2013 that president carter visited that family as their new home was being built. and all these years later, that family is still just so grateful and excited by that visit and that house that they say has changed their lives forever. >> i'm going to make it now. so you're going to drink? >> it's coffee time at the san jose home of. leo and mojito

bar. but this isn't just any home. it was one provided by habitat for humanity and built in part by jimmy and rosalynn carter. he installed this store. >> i want to install it. >> abc seven news reporter david louie covered the construction of the home back in 2013, capturing the moments president carter worked on that door. the couple, who lives here now, came to the u.s. from ethiopia, initially living in a smaller south bay home. >> we still live in the same, you know, one apartment, right? >> a crowded place for their family of four. tiktok leo found out about habitat for humanity from a friend at work. >> one of my friends, she said they have a jimmy carter project, so why don't you apply this one? >> she was one of 200 people who applied for a home at the time. after a lengthy selection process, they were chosen. >> i just want to see it. i was so surprised. very nice. so we accepted. look, who am i now? >> the surprises didn't end there. >> the team, they thought, hey, you know, jimmy carter is going to be in san jose and say what?

yeah. and then i don't know how the chance he just. he picked our house. >> here's then 89 year old president carter in 2013, arriving with a bag full of tools. he was ready to take on any task. so ready. the secret service had to reel him in. >> he was 89 years old. i was cracking up because the only thing the secret service would not let him do is get on the roof. >> janis jensen is the president and ceo of habitat for humanity, east bay, silicon valley. she was there at that 2013 san jose build. >> i remember him hanging that front door and the precision, and he was not going to let it go unless it was perfectly right. >> she said the legacy he left behind will only continue to grow. >> we're going to miss both of them, but we will honor that legacy. we still we have been and we are, and we will go into the future. >> part of that legacy's growth will be through the children who have been able to live and grow in this house, filled with reminders of the man who helped make it possible, including a picture of their parents with

rail project. the first set of tracks have been laid in kern county on hand pile drive. in that first railroad spike was governor newsom. the first phase of construction will extend 171 miles, connecting merced and bakersfield through the central valley. $11 billion have been invested so far. phases to eventually extend the rail line into san francisco and los angeles are unfunded. >> tonight, caltrans, while we're talking, transportation will begin overnight work on highway 37. the project, designed to prevent flooding and combat rising sea levels in the north bay. the work will affect a 12 mile stretch of eastbound 37 in solano county. drivers should be aware the detour will add another 12 miles to your trip, so plan for that. a plan to widen and elevate the entire 21 mile stretch of highway 37 is the ultimate goal here. creating more bicycle, public transit, and carpool options for all travelers. >> all right, well, let's get a check on our weather and find

out what's in store for the week in the new year. >> the new year, right. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. very chilly this morning. >> yeah, we definitely had the winter chill, the fog, dan and ama. and now we're going to switch gears and bring in the wind and milder weather. let me show you some live pictures from our tower cameras. we still have some thick fog hanging around from sutro to mount tam. you can see it, but look at those gorgeous sunset views from santa cruz to. okay. all right. looking at live doppler seven, a mix of fog and high clouds right now. checking out the visibility. you know, it was so thick you could barely see this morning, but right now, it is still heavy around half moon bay and napa, just over a mile. so be careful if you are driving this evening. temperatures in the 50s as we check out what's ahead. there is a system that is pushed into nevada and on its way across to the east. so high pressure is going to build in behind it, and we're going to get squeezed in between. so the winds will pick up. not too bad right now. mount diablo 13 mile an hour winds. that all changes

come tonight 7:00 until 10 a.m. wednesday. we have a wind advisory going up for the north and east bay hills. gusts to 50 miles an hour. also parts of the peninsula hills. possibility of downed tree limbs and outages are possible. so watch out. the 10:00 tonight you will notice the northerly wind developing. it's a gusty offshore wind going into 5 a.m. about 37 miles an hour. fairfield half moon bay over 40 miles an hour. and that windy pattern continues into the afternoon going into the nighttime hours. look at that. calistoga. over 40 mile an hour winds late night. it is still windy. the good thing is, we've had our wedding rains. our fire season is our fire danger is lessened because of this. so that is obviously a good thing for us here in the bay area. beach hazard statement until 9 p.m. tomorrow. watch out. those breakers are building up to 20ft, which means rip current risk and sneaker waves down south. they have not seen their first big rain event, so their fire danger is running high beginning tomorrow morning until thursday afternoon, they are

looking at gusts 50 to 80 miles an hour. isolated even higher 80 to 100 low humidity. they're calling this an extreme santa ana wind event, potentially destructive and life threatening. so keep that in mind. there's a fog from mount tam tonight through wednesday morning. gusty offshore winds along the coast. large breaking waves. sunny and milder. this week there is a possibility of records, so watch what happens when the winds start to pick up. that fog gets pushed out of the picture. tomorrow morning. you'll begin with mainly clear skies and then the sun will be out high. clouds will filter the sunshine. your morning temperatures anywhere from the 30s to the 40s. it will be windy in the hills, breezy at the coastline tomorrow afternoon. a really mild day. mid 60s san francisco, oakland, half moon bay, 67, in santa rosa 66 san rafael, vallejo, san jose 6765, in concord. if you like this pattern, you're in luck because most of this week you're going to be seeing the mild to warm weather hanging around. the accuweather seven day forecast does highlight that gusty wind
