we have some freezing wind chills from here back to corpus christi, texas. this morning from topeka to atlantic city, millions are waking up in the bitter footprint left behind a deadly winter storm. at least nine died in crashes across five states. it's been six years since the nation's capital had this much snow crippling some airports. reagan shutting down all of its runways last night. more than 2,000 flights cancelled and 7,000 delayed. eight states and washington, d.c. declaring a state of emergency. many federal buildings and public schools closed again today. >> it's crazy. i've never seen so much snow. i've lived here all my life. >> ginger: in virginia, a power outage caused the water system to malfunction. for now they have to boil their water. ten inches in cincinnati gave them their biggest snow in nine year. crews shutting down highways, abandoned tractor trailers littering roads. over the weekend cars skating

across overpasses in wichita, kansas. thousands left without power in illinois, indiana and kentucky. that destructive glaze of ice bringing down power lines and trees. kevin workman said he only had 30 seconds to get out of the way before this tree crashed into his west virginia home. >> if i hadn't gotten up to get that coffee, i'd probably be dead right now. it just wiped out the chair where i was sitting in. >> ginger: it is going to be a chilly recovery of the vehicles you see that slid off yesterday. wjla has our helicopter out. they're giving you a vision of what is happening here on this tuesday morning. it's still cold. look at the wind chills with cold weather advisories from tucson, arizona, to orlando. deep into texas, too.

speaking of texas that's where the next storm develops late tomorrow and thursday into early friday. we have winter storm warnings eastern arkansas, northwestern louisiana and north texas right along that red river valley. we're watching for the development of the storm. that's thursday 7:00 p.m. where it's starting with snow on the north end, that wintry mix, and then snow behind it. we will be watching this one and the cold, robin, for a couple days here. >> robin: we'll check with you in just a little bit. thank you, ginger. now the extreme wildfire threat in the west. what's being described as a life threatening and destructive wind storm is expected in southern california. the worst wind event in more than a decade. chief national correspondent matt gutman is in agora hills, california, for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. the state of california considers this would have been so dangerous that they are surging personnel and equipment. trucks, engines from northern california to southern california.

you just mentioned it. this is being considered the most extreme wind event around l.a. county since 2011. here's what makes it so dangerous. they are predicting wind gusts of up to 100 miles an hour throughout l.a. county. national weather service saying there will be many toppled trees. there will be power outages. there will be big rigs, mobile homes, trailers flipped over, long lines at airports. second, it is bone dry out there. there's been no significant win in southern california since may. thirdly, we are talking about l.a. county, one of the most populated places in the country, with millions of people in the cross hairs. now, the event is supposed to kick off in several hours and persist through wednesday evening. in that time span, folks are being advised to stay off the roads, to get away from windows. and if they live in a place where they see unstable trees torque get out. as one fire chief told me last night, if folks don't have a go bag ready to go, now is a good time to prepare one.

george? >> george: okay, matt. thank you very much. now breaking news overnight. deadly 7.1 magnitude earth yake rocked tibet. ian pannell is tracking the latest on that. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. rescuers hard at work. chinese administer of tibet, they are trying to assess the full impact of this disaster. what we know is the powerful 7.1 earthquake striking around 50 miles north of mount everest. videos showing tremors hitting the hotel everest view in nepal. television showing video of the quake and the after math. crumbling highways, debris strewn everywhere. search and rescue teams are hard at work. they have even deployed drones to help look for people and damage as this all out rescue operation gets under way. temperatures in this area plummeting to around 6. at an altitude of 20,000 feet, it is a difficult area to survive in. people are afraid to go back into their homes. at least 95 people are believed killed, over 100 injured and

1,000 homes destroyed. i think those figures are likely to change. the quake occurring close to the area where mountaineers gather to ascend everest. 9,000 people died when it was last struck by a quake in 2015. we'll wait to hear if there's been any impact on the nepalese side. michael? >> michael: ian, thank you so much. now the judge denying president-elect trump's effort to delay sentencing in his new york hush money case. our senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is here with the latest. good morning, aaron. >> good morning to you, michael. happy new year. trump may try more legal maneuvering today to try and get his sentencing delayed. right now the judge expects him to appear, likely virtually, on friday, so he can sentence trump to an unconditional discharge. no fine no jail time. but the actual sentence is the bare minimum trump's attorney says doesn't matter. just days from inauguration he believes he should be covered by presidential immunity. and his conviction should be

thrown out. the judge refused that calling trump's arguments repetitive and said instead of paying off stormy daniels and trying to hide it, trump engaged in premeditated and continuous deception. prosecutors at the manhattan d.a.'s office said there's overwhelming evidence of trump's guilt and no reason to delay sentencing. january 10th he is not president yet. >> michael: yeah, simply not president yet. there's also a development in the president-elect's classified documents case as well. >> special counsel jack smith is preparing a report about his findings. now trump and his co-defendants are trying to block its release overnight. attorneys working to finalize this report of trump's handling of classified documents and the attorney general is deciding what to publicly release. but with these moves to block the report, to delay sentencing, trump's lawyers are trying to erase any trace of trump's connection to these criminal cases before he's sworn in on the 20th. >> michael: all right, aaron. thank you very much. >> robin: now the new orleans terror attack and never before

seen images of the explosives allegedly planted by the driver who rammed his vehicle into a crowd killing 14 people and injuring so many on new year's day. trevor ault is in new orleans and has the latest for us. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. louisiana's attorney general launched an investigation into the security plans and failures new year's eve. officials have stressed this could have been far worse. we are about to show you the home made explosives that the fbi says the suspect tried and failed to detonate right here on bourbon street. this morning abc news has obtained never before seen images of the homemade explosive devices placed on bourbon street by suspected terrorist shamsud din jabbar just before he killed 14 people and injured dozens more. surveillance video shows the suspect placing a pair of coolers at the scene ahead of the attack where he appears to be on his cell phone before looking up to wave.

inside those coolers, law enforcement say they found steel pipes surrounded by two dozen rolls of nails and a radio controlled receiver. authorities also discovering jars of flammable liquid inside the white ford f150 he used to barrel into though bourbon street crowds. on monday, president biden and the first lady were in new orleans meeting with grieving families, attending a prayer service and visiting the memorial. >> i'm directing my team to make every resource available to federal, state and local law enforcement to complete this investigation quickly and do whatever else we can. >> reporter: president approving the mayor's request to raise the security designation for mardi gras to the highest level, the same level as the super bowl. >> they may see more barricades, barriers, check points. that will be the assets that they see. but there will be a host and range of assets that they don't see that are also there to

support mardi gras and keep it safe. ♪ >> reporter: mardi gras season is now under way, the attack still weighing heavily on the city. in the wake of the tragedy what do these traditions mean to new orleans? >> everything. we come together and we say, hey, we're still here. we're persevering. we're going to maintain what's important to us. >> reporter: and the mardi gras season does pose a unique security challenge on top of the crowds there will be 35 parades here over the next two months. officials have said every one of them will be dedicated to the victims and their families, george. >> george: now the first confirmed human death from bird flu in the u.s. and what we're learning about the bird flu risk to the american public. erielle reshef is here with the story. >> good morning, george. while tragic, the cdc saying the first death was not unexpected given the known potential for infection with these viruses to cause severe illness and even death. health officials say the risk to the general public remains low but some experts say more needs to be done. this morning health officials confirming a patient in

louisiana is the first human to die from bird flu in the u.s. the louisiana department of health saying the person was over the age of 65 be under lying health conditions and contracted the virus after being exposed to a flock of birds in a back yard. >> the risk is still very low. remember, this is from someone who's had direct contact with back yard flocks. so direct connection to wild life in a way that most people don't have. >> reporter: the cdc analyzed the virus in that louisiana patient and found concerning new mutations which could help the virus infect people more easily. but the patient did not appear to pass the mutated virus to anyone else. there have been 66 confirmed human case of bird flu in the u.s., but so far there has been no evidence of human to human spread. george spoke to the former white house covid coordinator about whether we could see that in the future. >> george: it just takes one

mutation to create the possibility of human to human transmission. >> just because we haven't seen it yet doesn't mean it can't happen. and we have to assume that it might very well happen somewhere down the road. we have to prepare for. it >> reporter: this past week the biden administration ramping up efforts to fight the virus and help prevent human to human transmission, granting an additional $306 million to help state and local programs monitor the virus and fund new research. health officials are urging people not to consume unpasteurized dairy products. the fda is testing aged cheese made with raw cow's milk over fears of possible contamination. this was important. experts also warning to not feed your pets any raw food after at least one cat died from the virus in oregon. something we are closely monitoring. >> george: we have a recall from costco. >> this is coming as we are seeing a spike in respiratory viruses. costco is recalling a batch of kirkland signature severe cold&flu plus congestion caplets due to potential foreign material contamination.

they were sold in the midwest and southeast between october 30 and november 30. if you bought this medicine, stop using it. costco said you can get a full refund. >> george: as you should. >> as you should. >> george: all right. thank you, erielle. >> robin: now to a new rule that could lift the credit scores of millions of americans by removing medical debt from credit reports. elizabeth schulze is in washington with these great details for us. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, robin. two out of every five americans have medical debt. those unpaid medical bills can take a big toll on your credit score. now that is about to change. this morning the consumer financial protection bureau is finalizing a rule to erase $49 billion in unpaid medical bills from the credit reports of about 15 million americans. now, this doesn't mean you don't have to pay medical debt, but the government watch dog said it can no longer be factored into your credit score. this change is set to take effect in march, so lawsuits or congressional action could delay

i know you're very proud of that. >> i am. thank you for having me. >> robin: so good to see you. we know this was officially meant for those who have diabetes. the new study saying those looking to lose weight, it is also very effective. but it's not for everyone, correct? >> correct. glp-1 medications are fda approved for long term use for treatment and prevention of disease. while they're amazing, they should not be seen as a quick fix or vanity drug. >> robin: what are some misconceptions when it comes to these drugs? >> i actually wrote this book "the ozempic revolution" because just getting a prescription does not mean you will be successful. that's the biggest misconception i see. people think it's a magic wand and you don't have to do any work. it couldn't be further from the truth. in the past ten years, i've seen thousand of patients on glp-1's. i realized the people most successful were ones willing to

embrace habit change and knowledge. so i took everything that i say to my patients, from how to eat, how to minimize side effects and put it in this book. doing the work is really important because at this point in time up to 66% of people who start this drug stop by one year. >> robin: 66%? >> yes. that means they're not getting the long term health benefits. >> robin: why is that, 66%? >> i think it's multifactorial. i think a lot has to do with people not knowing they need to do some work, manage side effects and set realistic expectations. also cost and insurance is a big variable, too. >> robin: we've got some viewer questions. we want to get to dan, who has been taking a glp-1. >> hi. i'm currently on a glp-1 medication. what are the best meal plans and strategies that i can use to support the medication and help in my long term success? >> robin: that's a good question. >> that's a great question.

in the book i move through three foundations. habit, food and stock. when it comes to food there are a few big take aways. one, i want people to prioritize protein. make sure you get adequate nutrition but you minimize muscle loss which can be a big deal on medications. then i want you to focus on hydration. people don't realize glp-1's don't just decrease appetite. they actually all turn off thirst mechanisms so you have to make a conscious effort to drink water. and finally, don't skip meals. people think this might be a fast track to weight loss. but honestly, you will do yourself no favors and you won't feel great. >> robin: again, you have to put in the work. >> you have to put in the work. >> robin: okay. we have time for another one. this is from elizabeth. >> hi. do you have any tips for managing side effects that come along with these medications? thanks. >> robin: we hear a lot about the side effects. >> yeah. side effects are common, but they're manageable. biggest ones are constipation, diarrhea, nausea and sometimes fatigue. one of the tools that i teach people is to record your food. not just what you ate, but how

you feel. often there's a trigger between what you eat or a particular pattern of behavior that if you can identify it, get ahead of it, you can stop it. i also want people to pay attention to fiber. that's a big deal. most of the side effects are gi related. you want to try to eat enough in your diet. sometimes you don't have a big appetite. fiber supplementation. something with insoluble and soluble fiber can really help mitigate these side effects. >> robin: we know you have done your homework. doctor, thank you very much. i'm sure we'll have you back from time to time. >> thank you so much. >> robin: appreciate that. okay. let's get now to -- i have to tell you, her book, "the ozempic revolution" is out now. >> yes. thank you. >> robin: you got it. let's get some pop news with lara. >> lara: thank you, robin. let's get to it, everybody. we're going to begin with happy news. sauces, right? >> this is a revelation. there's many sauces to make pasta. this chapter in the book no cook sauces. what we did, we take things, combinations, and we make these beautiful sort of vibrant sauces. here we've got posted peppers. >> michael: out of the pantry. >> that goes in. hand full of almonds giving it that pesto vibe. then we'll spice out with dry chili. then you can take a cheese of your choice. this cottage cheese is fresh. >> michael: why cottage cheese? >> it's really healthy. got a nice stretch to it when you heat it up. garlic. then we're basically gonna hit that with salt and pepper, bit of olive oil, swig of vinegar. then we just whip it up. this sauce takes about 30 seconds. whip it up. basically it's done around about now. there we go. we'll just check the seasoning.

>> michael: there we go. >> you can put it in a jar like this. you can put this on pizza. you can put it in pasta, stews. it's delicious. you can make it as a dip. what we're going to do today is mix up this beautiful pasta. this is fresh pasta, so it only took three minutes to cook. right? what we're going to do, a really important trick, america. lot of people drain away that water. that starchy water is a secret ingredient. right? that's gonna make this pasta sauce loose and elegant just like in italy. don't throw it away, brothers and sisters. we'll go in with that sauce, mix it up nice and quick. in no time at all. this is my simplest cookbook ever, after 40 years of cooking, 25 years of doing beautiful recipes. have a look at this. we're gonna make some beautiful pasta. look at the color. it's wintertime and we've got color. we'll finish off with more cheese on top. could be mozzarella. anything like that. if you can grab some basil and with a little pizazz, put it on top.

it's been around for many years. you do feel kind of the weight of responsibility to try to get it right for the fans. make sure you bring your own thing to it. you have a lot of pressure to live up to the books, which are so, so loved. >> michael: you said it earlier. recently divorced dad/botanist. what made you want to play this role? what drew you to it? >> i love horror and action comedy. i've never been offered the chance. as an actor, i'm a physical actor and i love all the stunts that are involved as well. i thought it was a great opportunity to challenge me, playing this regular science dad who finds himself in all this action horror adventure. >> lara: sounds so fun. let's take a look. >> oh, okay. >> dad, please skwreut's important.

new york photographer, her and my grandparents also fled hungary 1956 during the hungarian revolution, came to new york and started a life here. so her journey and my grandparents struggles and sacrifice, all that they've yearned for and assimilating and becoming americans and kind of everything that was laid before, i had the privilege of being born here and becoming an american actor and having this remarkable life. i have to honor. i never take any of that for granted. so i'm incredibly grateful for that struggle. >> lara: want to show everybody a clip of "the brutalist." take a look.
