it. >> there are neighborhoods. neighborhoods that have been leveled. >> it's just pretty devastating. this is pretty devastating. i don't think l.a. has seen anything like this before. >> the city of angels looks more like a hellscape tonight. a devastating, destructive night in los angeles as new fires spark across the city. firefighters facing a number of ferocious fires and dangerous winds with no end in sight. we have team coverage tonight on the los angeles firestorm. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm dion lim. >> it is still a frightening situation tonight with firefighters racing to two new fires that are threatening homes and iconic landmarks like the hollywood bowl. los angeles crews are overwhelmed. and now dozens of bay area firefighters are in l.a. to help firefighters continue to have their hands full tonight. >> with the wildfires in southern california, all of them remain out of control tonight. today, we learned at least one

of them turned deadly. at least five people died in the eaton fire. the winds were so strong last night. embers from that fire traveled as far as three miles away. the palisades fire remains the largest at nearly 16,000 acres. it's also the most destructive. the eaton fire has burned over 10,000 acres. a new fire sparked just tonight the sunset fire. it started in the hollywood hills and burned at least 50 acres. now palisades fire, one of the most active fires burning tonight. more than a thousand structures have burned, many of them homes. >> now, at the same time, firefighters are dealing with normal house fires made even more dangerous in those strong winds. take a look at the situation in studio city. a large house caught fire and the flames then spread to other homes. the embers landed on the hillside and started a bunch of small spot fires. firefighters are making progress though, putting those out right now. >> let's get to that scare in the hollywood hills. the sunset

fire started around 6 p.m. near runyon canyon and the hollywood bowl. it spread fast, with some neighbors trying to put out spot fires, others evacuated, creating a traffic nightmare. heading into hollywood. as tim caputo, with our sister station in los angeles shows you, the fire is not out, but the situation is at least looking a bit better. >> you're practically looking straight up, because this is obviously a steep hill where we are right now. you actually see a firefighter on get the light too much on him, but working on putting out some of those hotspots on this fire, it's not raging at the moment. you barely see flames here and there. there is obviously hotspots and embers that are kind of coming off some of the trees and some of the wood here, but it's not as bad as it certainly once was when the fire first started. some of the fire crews here, when they say they got here, it was raging even from where we're standing right now. but with the assistance of the aerial attack and obviously the crews that have been on the ground for quite some time, they have made really good progress at this

hour. >> the only known deaths from these wildfires have been caused by the eaton fire. and today we found out at least five people have been found dead. this one is burning out of control near the altadena and pasadena areas. reporter leanne suter shows us how crews are now checking on burned out homes. >> we've been following one of the l.a. county fire crews up here in altadena. we are on mendocino near santa anita avenue. they are going from house to house here, trying to turn off all of the utilities. that is a major issue in all of these burned houses. so they've been able to get their tools and they're coming in and shutting off the gas lines, and they're doing that so that none of these fires can reignite or spark some other blaze. we were just a short time ago up at a home that had burned on one side, one house burned. firefighters thought they had a handle of it. and then unfortunately, some of the embers caught the next home on fire simply because there was a gas line still going. so as

you can see, the crews in there, i mean, dangerous work, but there's just not enough utility crews to go around. there are neighborhoods, neighborhoods that have been leveled here in altadena, and this is one of those areas. we just came off of fair oaks near mendocino here. and literally it's from the corner to the corner, the entire block. all of the houses have been burned. >> now, the palisades palisades fire is currently the most destructive of the wildfires in the los angeles area. and since it broke out yesterday morning, it has burned, as i said, at least a thousand buildings. but there are estimates that up to 75% of the homes in pacific palisades are damaged or at least destroyed. this map from cal fire shows exactly where it's burning. there were other fires in the area as recently as 2021. reporter cassandra gutierrez spoke with some of the people who had to evacuate. >> firefighters are still working to protect people and property from the palisades fire tonight. it's already burned

through hundreds of structures, leaving a path of destruction and heartbreak behind. residents in pacific palisades began returning home wednesday to find their homes, and more than half of their beloved community leveled. >> unfortunately, i lost my place of work yesterday. i saw it on the news completely in flames, so out of a job right now. but all i can do is pray. pray for my house. pray for the palisades community. that's all i can do. >> the tight knit neighborhoods of this coastal area first went up in flames on tuesday. gusty winds sending embers flying faster than firefighters could respond. some residents became trapped while trying to escape. >> there was a big decision do i stay in my car and maybe burn to death or choked from, you know, smoke inhalation? or do i run? and i was able to do a u-turn and i went back to my building. i figured, you know what? i'd rather die in my building than in a car. >> grocery stores, churches, community centers, all destroyed by the blaze. >> just so worried. i didn't even sleep last night. i hadn't

cried how i did last night in about 4 or 5 years. i couldn't believe it. this is one of the best communities and cities in los angeles. it's the most beautiful, i can tell you that. and it just got ripped to shreds. it's wiped off the map. >> cal fire reports thousands of structures are still threatened by the palisades fire tonight, and we know crews are stretched thin by all the fires ravaging through southern california. i'm cassandra gutierrez, abc seven news. >> more firefighters from the bay area are heading into los angeles to help out. that includes firefighters from sonoma, santa clara, alameda and contra costa counties, as well as dozens from san francisco. in fact, the latest crew left for la in the last 45 minutes or so. california governor newsom says more than 7000 firefighters are on the ground in los angeles from across the state, as well as some firefighters from oregon and washington state, too. >> all right. obviously, we are watching the weather conditions, so let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel tracking those conditions. >> yes, sandhya, these dangerous

winds are not over. firefighters still have to deal with this for several days. >> absolutely. and dan and diane, it's a windstorm of extreme intensity combining with critically dry fuels. that's feeding the firestorms. this is a live view from the palisades fire, one of the largest fires, as you just heard, over 15,000 acres. right now, those winds are picking up 43 miles an hour in malibu. you can see they're very gusty and surrounding areas as well. taking a look at all the fires that are burning there, the palisades fire, as i mentioned, the largest ones. but the eaton fire is right up there, over 10,000 acres. the red flag warning was extended until friday night. the particularly dangerous situation playing out today with the devastation in southern california, they have removed that particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning and now have just put up a red flag warning until friday evening. moderate to strong wind event. those santa ana winds combining with the critically dry fuels. extreme risk remains in that

region. as we look at the winds, they will picking up in the next hour over 26 miles an hour. even stronger winds are expected in the overnight hours going into tomorrow morning, especially over the higher terrain. and when you take a look at the fire danger, it increases as we head towards thursday. so they are not out of the woods. they are not out of danger. it's a very dangerous situation. they are still facing in southern california. diane. >> all right. we will continue to follow it. sandhya. thank you. governor gavin newsom toured the devastation in pacific palisades today after meeting with president biden. he joined cal fire crews walking past the burned out home after burned out homes. this disaster is turning into a political battle between newsom and president elect trump, who is now calling for the governor to resign over the fires. it is a fight we have seen before during the first trump administration. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez breaks down the claims. >> the catastrophic wildfires in los angeles county quickly

turned political. on wednesday, president elect donald trump blamed california governor gavin newsom for decisions trump thinks made the fires worse. >> this is a true tragedy, and it's a mistake of the governor. and you could say the administration, they don't have any water. >> the president elect initially posted on the platform truth social, claiming the governor refused to sign a water restoration declaration, something newsom says does not exist. trump, apparently referring to debates over water flow in the delta, claiming northern california could send more water down south. on wednesday morning, governor newsom toured the devastation in pacific palisades. the governor had this to say about trump's attacks. >> one can't even respond to it. i mean, it's people are literally fleeing. >> we spoke with cal state east bay political science professor dan bailey about the timing of the back and forth remarks. >> i think that wildfires and natural disasters are always going to be political because it has to do with federal funding.

>> during trump's first presidential term, he was also critical of california's fire management plans. and on the campaign trail just this past october, he threatened to withhold funds over water issues. >> and we'll say, gavin, if you don't do it, we're not giving you any of that fire money that we send you all the time for all the fire forest fires that you have. >> so what does this mean as trump enters his second presidential term? >> i think the state just needs to be prepared for not having federal funds. i think that we have to be smart and creative in ways that we can protect our people here, senator josh becker said. >> the focus right now should not be on political accusations, certainly not appropriate at all. >> the focus of everyone should be on first containing these fires, putting out these fires, protecting civilians. >> wednesday, governor newsom praised president biden for granting federal help for the wildfire response. >> within 36 hours of this

were discovered in a home during a welfare check on wednesday. >> when officers arrived, they were able to enter the home through a window, after which they located four deceased individuals. >> neighbors we spoke with say they would have never imagined that something like this would happen here. to hear that, they found four bodies inside the home. what is your reaction? >> not scared. i'm scared. >> shocking. it was shocking. my first thought when i heard that there were four bodies, i thought maybe carbon monoxide. and then another lady that was out here talking with. with a bunch of us. she said it wasn't carbon monoxide. somebody reported gunshots. >> officers, though, would not say if a gun was used or fired, only saying there is currently no threat to the community. as to the specific circumstances that led to these four deaths, police are still trying to figure that out. >> it is a homicide investigation. we definitely have at least one victim of homicide all of 2024. we only had two homicides. so this is a

completely unusual and very tragic incident. >> the bodies were found in a home that is hard to see in this video, as it is roped off with tape and surrounded by shrubs. emergency crews found two dogs and two cats that were still alive inside the home. officers say it appears the bodies, all of which were adults, had been in there for at least two days. >> i asked the paramedic, i said, can you tell us anything? is it what's going on? he goes, all i can tell you is it's bad. >> jerry tapiro lives across the street, and while she didn't know the people inside, she says there was a renter. that person's caregiver and two other people. she says that recently she had seen officers at the house. >> because you can see right out her kitchen window. and they came in, no lights, came in, pulled up, went inside, stayed for a little while and came out. that's happened a couple of times. >> police, though, wouldn't tell us why they had previously been to that home in santa rosa. j.r

have only seen in that area 16 hundredths of an inch of rain since may. that's a record long dry spell. and that is part of the main reason why these santa ana winds are just pushing the flames. drought stricken southern california. this is a live view from the palisades fire, one of the largest fires, as you just heard, close to 16,000 acres. here's a look at the fire danger index. once again, they're not out of the danger. it is going to be another gusty night ahead going into tomorrow with those downsloping santa ana winds. they are expecting another day of very serious conditions that they'll be dealing with. mountain. lukens troc trail. peak wind gusts 100 miles an hour. magic mountain 90. you can see there. eaton canyon 70. saddle peak 98. so it has been just a ferocious windstorm. visible satellite picture before the sun went down. picking up all that smoke that was moving

from those wildfires out over the pacific ocean. of course, that smoke is choking the area. air quality alert until 1215 friday. all areas shaded in gray there. air quality continues to suffer. the oranges and the reds indicating poor to unhealthy air quality. and they're going to have to deal with this for even longer as we take a look at our winds. they really backed off this afternoon, but they're picking up once again not expected to be terribly strong. mount umunhum 33, hood mountain 21, hawkeye, 20 miles an hour. so here's a look at our peak wind gusts. 84 mount saint helena, oakland hills. 60 healdsburg. healdsburg hills 80 miles an hour. why the wind? well, we've got the area of low pressure inland, high pressure over the pacific. we're squished in between. the wind is flowing from the high to the low, and that's that. north northeasterly offshore wind component. we know it as a diablo wind. southern california, the santa ana winds, that same wind direction push those temperatures up into the 70s for san rafael, redwood

city. 67 in oakland. 66 in the city, 65 livermore. i mean, it was a mild to warm day. 69 in san jose. right now, those temperatures are falling in the 40s and the 50s. a beautiful live view from our mount tam cam. skies are clear looking at san francisco tomorrow. mild to warm. possible records this weekend. temperatures still above average for this time of year. and then gusty winds are possible in the hills between saturday night and sunday, so just keep that in mind as we start off the morning numbers in the 40s. heading into the afternoon hours, temperatures quickly rise. and as we head into the three 30 hour, we're looking at 60s and even some 70s. so records are certainly possible tomorrow morning. bundle up. it will start out chilly mid 30s to the upper 40s heading into the afternoon hours. low 60s to the low 70s with plenty of sun out there. the accuweather seven day forecast records are possible for tomorrow. temperatures remaining above average but a little bit cooler friday and
