devastating fires tonight. firefighters are rushing to put out hotspots before the winds turn against them. our focus tonight remains on the palisades and eaton fires still scorching their way into the record books. the eaton fire in altadena has burned more than 14,000 acres, with containment up to 27%. we saw minimal growth today on the palisades fire, sitting at more than 23,000 acres with 8% containment. but as it is, these fires have burned an area bigger than the city of san francisco, all in a matter of days. they've burned more than 12,000 structures, becoming the second and fourth most destructive fires in state history. investigators have not shared a cause for either of the fires yet. we have team coverage tonight tracking the devastation ane dangerous conditions still to come. abc seven news reporter tara campbell leads us off with a look at how bay area firefighters are playing a critical role in making sure today's embers don't become

tomorrow's firestorm. >> sunday firefighters in los angeles taking advantage of calmer winds, making someof headway in the battle against multiple wildfires. the eaton and palisades fires alone, killing at least 24 people. >> definitely a historic level of devastation that i think at this point even eclipses what we saw during the tubbs fire in santa rosa. >> that santa rosa fire department captain keegan lee, he's leading a 20 member strike team made up of firefighters from sonoma county. >> it's personal because we went through it, too. and so i think that we're in a unique position to relate to these people. >> the sonoma county team battling the eaton fire. so far, it's scorched more than 14,000 acres. and as of sunday evening, it's 27% contained. >> when a fire moves through a large area of structures like this, what's left behind is a lot of smoldering material. in and amongst structures, some of which are still unburned. >> the team tasked with tamping down potential threats.
11:03 pm
>> if we don't do a good job of extinguishing those smoldering hotspots when the winds do resurface, you know, worst case, it could lead to the fire recreating conditions that were seen earlier in the week. >> and that is the fear. with santa ana winds expected to return this week. >> i want to reassure you that your lafd, all of our regional partners, every single agency that has come from up and down this state and outside of the state, we are ready. mayor bass, chief mcdonnell, myself, our city leaders are fully, fully committed to ensure that we're ready for this next event. >> while they may be ready, there's still a toll to be taken on the firefighters and the communities they're trying to protect. >> our hearts go out to them. it's really horrific and we hope that no one else has to continue to experience these type of fires in the future. but i think that's probably an unrealistic expectation, unfortunately. >> tara campbell abc seven

news. >> let's get to abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with a look at the wind conditions on these fires. and spencer, there's a dangerous situation that's shaping up this week. >> it certainly is, diane. and becoming more dangerous. as a matter of fact, this red flag warning for high fire danger has been extended now until 6 p.m. wednesday. so for the next three days, we're talking about very high fire danger in this entire region of southern california, from santa barbara county through la and ventura counties, all the way down into san diego county. as a matter of fact, i'll give you a look at the wind gusts right now. they seem relatively tame at the moment. these are surface winds now up to about 30mph. but as we animate this, you can see that by 10:00 tomorrow morning, we'll be looking at surface winds up to and above 40mph. and there is a high wind warning for this area. this area in the dark colors there into wednesday morning. the winds may gust up to about 70mph in this regionen tomorrow and wednesday, so you can see why the high fire danger warning has been
11:05 pm
extended into wednesday. the wind has been blowing from the northeast, pushing much of the smoke out to sea. but the air quality will decline again as those fires continue to burn. dionne. >> all right, spencer, we'll keep tracking that. now, the stories coming out of los angeles are simply heartbreaking. tonight, we're learning of a homeowner who watched his home burn from his tesla parked in the street. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone spoke with that homeowner and an expert who says we need better. long-tm fire planning going forward. >> this is the borro family of pacific palisades. their home went from looking like this to unrecognizable, destroyed by the palisades fire this past week. james barros wife, christina may have been one of the first to see smoke. she then made her two daughters schools aware, took the two out of school and evacuated. >> that was at 10:30 a.m. on tuesday, and by 8:30 p.m, our house was burned to the ground. >> perhaps hardest of all, james had just arrived at
11:06 pm
the ces tech conference in las vegas. as he worked to get home, he turned on the cameras to his tesla that was parked outside their home. >> and so i was able to remotely log into my car. and literally as i logged into it, i saw a flame jump from one house into our side yard, then into our garage, and burned down the whole house. >> like many others in the pacific palisades neighborhood of los angeles, barra is angry his family was dropped by state farm insurance weeks ago, and despite living near a fire station, his house and others on the block burned. >> there's literally a fire station three blocks from our house, and fire trucks didn't come to our house. so, you know, obviously there are things that could have. i'm sure there's a variety of things that could have been last lines of defense. there was no first line of defense working. >> fire hydrants were an issue, and usc professor kostas psinakis says until water pressure can be accurately monitored
11:07 pm
citywide, it should be tested annually. >> this is the kind of thing that i mean, you can spend a lot of time doing calculations, but unless, i mean, people go out there and it's not that difficult to test it, you can test these things, you know, once a year and make sure that you're prepared. >> james says it's the water issue, lack of warning systems and lack of information that anger him. >> it's beyond there being a high fire zone. this was a series of compounding mistakes that had gotten to have gotten to a point that is beyond comprehension. >> sheena lasky says this isn't just a los angeles problem. >> i think going forward, we need to work better, you know, at all levels, at the federal level, at the state level, at the local, at the local level. >> barro does say his family is safe. it's just tough. >> my five year old literally will go into fits of like, i just want to go home and i totally get it, i do too. but we, we have a we
