>> announcer: live from times square, it's monday "good morning america." >> robin: we appreciate you joining us on this monday morn. we want to get right to our top story, the very latest developments on the wild fires in california. how neighbors are banning together. take a closer look at this race track parking lot turned into a massive donation center. >> rebecca: sometimes the worst of times bring out the best of us. that is good to see. but this map shows where all the fires are burning across los angeles. the two big ones, they are still the palisades fire and the eaton fire. firefighters are battling the flames from the air as they try to contain as much as possible before the wind kicks up again. >> george: there is concern about the return of the santa ana winds as the search for the missing intensifies and the death toll has risen to 24 people. the head of a major private power company will join us live. his company is facing questions about its electrical climate possibly sparking some of the fires. we have team coverage all over

the fire zones. ginger is standing by with a red flag warning from the national weather service that's expected to last until wednesday. we start with chief national correspondent matt gutman in pacific palisades. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. more than 8 million people in l.a. county are facing this critical fire risk today. that 75 mile per hour wind gust concerning to the national weather service. they're calling this a particularly dangerous situation. same as it was last weekend. firefighters who have been on the line here have been exhausted. they're getting massive reinforcement in terms of personnel and equipment now. this morning exhausted fire crews trying to snuff out remaining hot spots as officials are facing for santa ana wind gusts today expected to reach 70 miles an hour. >> go, go, go! >> reporter: over the weekend the palisades fire again flaring up, this time near mandeville canyon,

encroaching on brentwood and encino, triggering an unprecedented air assault. the largest blaze, the palisades fire scorching nearly 24,000 acres with only 13% containment. that fire spinning off a firenado. reinforcements pouring in from mexico and canada to deploy fire equipment, specifically those large air tankers. fema saying there are limits to that air support. >> we're also talking about a very small space from the air. we gotta make sure those aircrafts are safe. can only put so much in the air at one time. >> reporter: this as authorities in l.a. county are now investigating the possible causes of the fire. >> i need you to come out here right now. we have a serious problem. >> what? >> reporter: doorbell camera video showing the frantic moments when they saw this small fire near their altadena house around 6 p.m. tuesday. >> at that time when we saw it, it was just at the base of the tower.

and within minutes it had spread. >> reporter: the crews racing outside filming what they saw in those terrifying moments. look closely. beyond the tree line that's a transmission tower. what did it feel like? >> it was a nightmare. i think the worst part, every time i checked on the fire it got worse. >> reporter: minute by minute they watched the fire grow. nearby, jennifer erico said she saw what appears to be fire at the base of that same transmission tower at about 6:20 p.m. snapping this picture. >> my husband had come home from work. he ran in the house and just started screaming, there's a fire on the hill, we need to get out. i ran out back, saw the fire at the pole. i immediately called 911. >> reporter: the winds quickly stoking the fire into an inferno, turning the night sky orange. at 6:24 p.m. a third resident pedro rojas, taking video of

the flames near that electrical fire. that was the only flames you saw anywhere around? >> anywhere around. no flames anywhere else. it was so dark. there were flames, we have noticed it. >> reporter: sunday we traveled to that altadena neighborhood to get a closer look. eaton canyon is below me. right there is that transmission tower. the cruises say they saw the fire burning initially. may be one of several or the first place where the fire started. that's the tower in the video. fire officials telling abc news they are aware of the videos and they are part of the investigation. southern california while the eaton fire started in its service area, a preliminary analysis shows no interruptions or electrical anomalies until more than an hour after the reported start time. company said no fire agency has suggested that its equipment caused the eaton fire to ignite. now, 24 people lost their lives in this fire.

24 people have lost their lives in this fire. one of the factors they are looking at is arson. that as governor newsom has demanded an independent investigation into the water issue specifically here in the palisades fire hydrants running dry. he called it deeply disturbing, george. >> george: matt, questions about power companies as well. the head of a private power company, edison international, will join us live in our next half hour. and the investigation about the investigation into the fires. >> robin: there's so many questions that folks have. ginger is here now with more on the extreme fire danger and those high winds. >> ginger: that's the problem. we've got three days of red flag warnings. part of that is a particularly dangerous situation red flag warning. that's something that usually gets issued every five to ten years. we've had four now of these pdf red flag warnings this year alone. this setup is different. it's going to impact different areas because we've got upper level support to the santa ana winds that will fuel them and

make them faster. those off shore winds are gonna kick up especially western santa monica mountains, thousand oaks and north. i'll get into who and exactly. those red flag warnings go all the way down to the membering can border. if you are in areas highlighted here, i 5 up to the grapevine, filmore, santa monicas north and west of malibu. that's where the worst wind is expected from tuesday morning through noon wednesday. we're talking gusts up to 70 miles per hour, humidity 8 to 15%. we thought we'd take you through the timeline, but even this afternoon you've got it through 11:00 a.m. in the 40s, 50s. this is when we ask, how can the air support get shut down. after 30 miles an hour the water and retardant isn't efficient enough let alone safe for fire fighters and people below. >> robin: swre to keep all that in mind. all right, ginger. thank you. authorities are warning looters looking to take advantage of the disaster, they will be prosecuted.

but we're also seeing so many people come together to help and lift each other up. kayna whitworth is at santa anita park with more on that. good morning, kayna. >> reporter: robin, good morning. truly remarkable here. this entire parking lot is full of much needed donations in this grass roots effort to help people who have lost everything and in some cases everyone they know also lost everything. authorities say for anyone looking to take advantage of the situation, they will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. this morning the los angeles county sheriff with an urgent warning to people taking advantage of the desperate situation. >> don't do it. whether it is burglary, looting or any other crime, whether it's a scam of some kind that you're conjuring up to make money off of the poor people that have been involved in this. >> reporter: officials warning burglars, looters and scammers that they will be prosecuted if they take advantage of people who have been through this tragedy. a curfew order has been established from dusk until dawn in the affected fire zones to

protect homes. authorities increasing patrols and deploying the national guard to assist. one suspect arrested after they were caught burglarizing a home in malibu disguised as a firefighter. the fbi now investigating the drone that collided with a super scooper aircraft while it was delivering desperately needed water to the palisades fire. it will be back in operation today after this hole was punctured in it. officials warning the public not to fly drones. >> this is extremely illegal and extremely dangerous. >> reporter: also the best of humanity in santa anita park. thousands coming together to help those in need. >> we are giving away free food. >> reporter: it all started with a tik tok gaining thousands of views. jerry martinez, juan diaz and jimmy medina simply wanted to give out food in their community. but their efforts inspiring others. and now turning this race track parking lot into a massive donation center. >> recently, we've been having so many donations from all over the state.

we have wheelchairs. we have coffee pots. we have blankets, we have clothes, essentials, hygiene packs. the support from the community has been really, really, really moving. >> reporter: alec also shared that some people show up to get things and they don't even have a bag or anything to take stuff home with them. that's the amount of loss they're dealing with. there are already volunteers. they had 1,000 people out here yesterday. they expect more of the same today. george stphr >> george: okay, thank you very much. we're going to washington now. confirmation hearings set to begin tomorrow morning for president-elect trump's cabinet nominees including marco rubio, pam bondi, christie nome, pete hegseth. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is a big week here on capitol hill. there are 14 senate confirmation hearings this week alone starting with pete hegseth. that is trump's choice to lead the defense department. he will come before the armed

services committee tomorrow. the former fox news host still fending off a slew of allegations, from financial mismanagement, sexual misconduct to alcohol abuse. all allegations that he strongly denies. sources telling abc news that as part of his background check the fbi had questioned hegseth as well as others in his personal life about some of those very allegations. president-elect trump was here on capitol hill just days ago. he met with republicans behind closed doors, urging his party to rally behind his picks and making a very special and personal appeal for hegseth, i am told. many of those nominees have participated in mock hearings with senate republicans here on capitol hill, trying to avoid any surprises once they get into that hot seat. of course, president-elect trump's inauguration is now just one week away, rebecca. >> rebecca: it is right around the corner. okay, rachel. thank you. also happening right now is that showdown over tik tok. a federal ban could go into effect one day before president-elect trump takes office. we want to bring in elizabeth schulze on what this ban would mean for users.

>> good morning. the supreme court really does look likely to uphold this ban across the country. so what that would mean is not necessarily going to disappear from your phone. tik tok's lawyer said the app will go dark. think about what that means. there's two ways this law works. one is that app stores like apple and google play won't allow new downloads or software updates so it will not really work for you. second way is internet companies might have to stop storing tik tok data. if that happens, you wouldn't be able to see an updated feed and probably wouldn't be able to post either. >> rebecca: there are some technical details that are loopholes. >> exactly. important to know you can keep posting chinese tik tok. you are not a criminal. it is not illegal for users. the tech companies are the ones that could face billions in fines if they do keep trying to allow those downloads or updates. you know, we already have seen users on tik tok post about work arounds like private networks, vpn's.

that's been impacted. my wife and i have lived in pasadena for almost 37 years so this is home. thank you to the firefighters and first responders and our workers who have been on the job. what we reported in an incident report to our state commission was that we were aware first of a request for media attention. at that point we had not seen any evidence on our system of electrical anomalies, electrical disturbance. typically when there's a spark created by equipment, we will see the electrical anomaly. we haven't seen that. that said, we have not been able to get close to the equipment. as soon as we can get close to it, we'll inspect and be transparent with the public. >> george: so you have ruled out a connection? >> you can't rule out anything ever until you can get your eyes on the equipment. we have seen the photos and the videos. again, at this point we have not

seen the kind of electrical anomaly that we would usually see with an event like this. again, we may find something different. we want to inspect. we want the systems from investigators. we want to be transparent with the public. >> george: you also filed an incident report about downed equipment in the area at the herst fire. any connection there? between the downed equipment and the hearst fire? >> well, we don't know yet. we did say we saw damage to the equipment. we did notice the reported time of that fire was 10:10 p.m. we first saw an electrical anomaly at 10:11 p.m. with that being so close in time we don't know whether the damage happened before or after the start of the fire. >> george: should you have shut off power earlier? >> we have a rigorous program for shutting off power. shutting off power comes with risk and consequences, too. it's a big challenge for our customers. we operate under a wild fire mitigation plan that is approved by our commission. there's oversight from the state

office of energy infrastructure and safety. we did extensive power shutoffs throughout this event. in fact, i want to say thank you to the customers who have been impacted by that because that is a hardship for them. that peak between public shutoffs and other outages. we had half million customers out. most have been restored now. we still have about 34,000 customers out from this storm and 23,000 from public shutoffs. we notice another wind system is picking up here so we have about 450,000 customers who we've warned they may need to have their power shut off. >> george: that's what i was going to ask you. you just warned them so far? you haven't shut off the power? >> that's correct. that's correct. and there's protocols that we have. we have a team monitoring 24/7 looking at telemetry from wind space meters, other information. we have eyes on the ground. again, it's protocol that we

>> robin: now to the growing nationwide threat of res respiratory illnesses. the cdc issuing a warning. 35 states now reporting high levels. our medical correspondent dr. sutton is here to break it down for us. you are an er physician. tell us what you are seeing and hearing and why this season is so concerning? >> i've been in the emergency room the past couple of weeks up until this weekend. i've been seeing rising rates rise in real time. i'm testing for multiple diseases. covid, flu, rsv. i have to say that the majority of the test results i'm getting back are the flu a. that's reflective in what we're seeing across the nation. if you can look at these numbers 5.3 million cases of flu so far. 63,000 hospitalizations.

almost 3,000 deaths. this is not nearly as high as we've seen in terms of the total of last year. we haven't seen the peak. we're not sure when that peak will be. what we are clear about is we need to be proactive. >> george: what kind of strain is it putting on the hospital? >> incredible strain, george. when we talk about flu, covid, rsv, norovirus, we're talking about those as well as other common emergencies, strokes, heart attacks, car accidents. this puts a strain in terms of the ability to treat all of these patients. also, space. it becomes increasingly difficult each and every day as we march toward that peak. >> rebecca: every parent knows the strain of this as well. some of the latest steps tragically two children in chicago recently died of the flu. what more can families be doing to protect themselves? >> we always hope those numbers remain low. when we talk about prevention, we focus on the most effective forms. talking about vaccinations. in past years 80% of children who died from the flu were

upper atmosphere. this is a 500 millibar. at the ground you've got santa anas that come over the mountains that are off shore. this will enhance it between the low and the high. it's a little farther southwest. that is going to give it more umph. that is not what you want. that's why it's a particularly dangerous situation, red flag warning. something they usually see every five to ten years, this is the fourth one. the national weather service has issued them this season. the concern is tuesday morning through wednesday noon for the areas you see i-5 close to the grapevine from where the hers 9 fire was. it has been mostly contained. san fernando, simi valley, back to filmore, ventura then santa monicas just west of the palisades fire. outside of there, you'll still have big gusty winds. red flag warnings are down to the mexican border. we put a couple stops here. this is noon today. filmore could have gusts 40, 50. some places will go up to 70 miles per hour in that tuesday through wednesday noon time period. that's why we stopped it here.

we're kicking off our financial detox series this morning tackling debt in the new year. elizabeth schulze is back. so nice to see you again, elizabeth. lot of people, they think about the new year as a reset, as far as their finances go. if you're trying to pay down a fixed amount. we're going with 2025 here. it's the year 2025. what should we do? >> we've taken this amount $2,025. it can be so daunting to pay off credit cart debt right now. we know interest rates are really high, 20%. we've taken this lump sum. assuming it stays at $2,025. what we're going to do is choose a fixed amount every month that you want to pay off. for that amount it's $187 a month. that helps look at it monthly if you pay that. that amount includes your interest. if you pay it now that $2,025 will go away. still seems like a lot. right? when you look at this every day. we have our small bucket here. $6 a day is all you need to pay off that full amount in a year. the take away from this is if

you set a daily target and stick to it, that's how you'll get that debt to go away within one year. >> rebecca: absolutely. there's a lot of research about the psychological boost of getting rid of that debt. so if you start by targeting a fixed amount it's wind behind your sails. >> start small and work your way up. >> rebecca: exactly. we're getting a lot of questions from viewers. a big topic that can affect getting a good rate for any kind of loan to help with your debt is your credit score. we have a question about that. >> my name is courtney. i would like some easy tips to increase my credit score. >> this is an important one. your credit score affects everything when it comes to taking out a loan. a small business loan, home loan, a car loan. one thing you can do today for free is check your credit report for any mistakes. go online annual credit report.com. i just tried it. it will take about five minutes. you enter your personal

information. it will run a credit report on you and see if there are any errors. i found one from my account. immediately, you can dispute it online. that will boost your credit score almost instantly. if you are trying to build up credit for the first time, one thing to think about is is there a program that can look at your spending history. experian boost can help. typically on your credit report things like, if you're paying for streaming, cell phone bill, rent. if you're paying that on time, it doesn't really count toward your credit score. if you use experian boost it can add about 13 points to your score. >> rebecca: you've been talking about the fact that health care debt will no longer be an impact on credit score, so that also should have an impact in the year ahead. another thing people are looking at this time of year is credit cards. they're not all created equal. there are really good ways people can find better credit cards for themselves. >> there are. one thing to think about, if you are focused on paying off debt is zero balance transfer card. this is an option to avoid sky high interest rates.

0% versus 20%, that is a lot better. there are some offers out there that will offer no interest up to 21 months. that's almost two years of no interest. citi simplicity, wells fargo have these cards. what you do is you transfer your current balance over to those cards. you won't pay interest. but keep in mind, after 21 months you are paying the high interest. you have to use that as a way to set the clock. you will pay a small fee to do that transfer. one final thing to think about. look at all your cards. if you are paying annual fees, don't pay the fees. call up the servicer, ask them to switch you to a no fee card. it is a lot better to switch to a no feed card than it is to close your account affecting your credit. >> rebecca: that's right. just make sure if you do that 0% transfer, it's not an incentive to spend more money. it's just keeping your interest in check. elizabeth, thank you so much. appreciate it. very much information. we're gonna see you tomorrow and talk strategies for creating a budget in 2025.

that's something we could all use as well. lara, we need more of you in pop news. >> lara: thank you. get on over here. we're gonna begin with lots of news, starting with the entertainment industry reacting to the los angeles wild fires despite the fires still burning around the city. relief efforts are getting under way. sag actors union are earmarking $1 million to their foundation to provide emergency relief. over the weekend our parent company, walt disney company, announced a $15 million commitment aimed at relief and rebuilding efforts. disney's ceo releasing a statement saying, we are proud to provide assistance to this resilient and vibrant community in this moment of need. overnight beyonce also announcing a donation of $2.5 million to those in the altadena fire zone. her bey good foundation will assist churches and community centers in other areas to address the immediate needs of

release "brooke shields is not allowed to get old." welcome. you say it's not a typical memoir. so what is it? >> first of all, the reason i was approached to do it because i started my own company called commence which is for women over 40. we start with hair hair, but it's a community. i was going through becoming a ceo in my late 50s. my agent said, well, why don't you talk about that because it's amazing. my first thought is why does it have to be so shocking that a woman over 40 can accomplish something? you don't have one foot in the grave. i said, it's not interesting enough for me, more brooke. thank you for the talk. [ laughter ] i said if i can combine it with actual research. things like when a woman comes into her confidence in a

different way. what happens hormonally? we're not just menopause. all these things. i said if we can make it interesting and there can be a lot of research, plus funny stories about being self-depricating. >> robin: you talked about pretty baby, which was george and ali's pretty baby. [ laughter ] that was a look back. i love the season you're in. this is more about the present and the future not so much looking back. >> i think that it's important to do that in this era of a woman's life. beauty industry wants us to choose youth. we look at regrets, what if, what if? i think it's important to understand where you've been. >> robin: sure. >> but i think it's joyous to say like, i may not know where i'm going, but i'm here. this is a different age than it used to be. the opportunities are different.

and i want to -- yeah, i want to look my best and be healthy. i always say, i wish everything was a little higher and tighter. i look at my gorgeous baby girls and they're all just buoyant. it's proud to pat yourself on the back and say, what do i want to do now? >> rebecca: yes. >> you're no longer tied by biology in the same way. opportunities are more open to women in their 40s, 50s, 60s. only one source of all the advertising that's out there even has a woman over 60. you just think like, we're formidable and fabulous. maybe we're a little scary. >> lara: age is just a number it's so cliche but never has that been more true. 60 today is not 60 of

yesteryear. we're young. we're vibrant. your book is saul about that. >> we're not angry. the reason i wanted to -- >> robin: thank you. >> the title is funny. we leave imprints on people. doing instagram live the other day. one of the comments was, i really wish you looked the way you used to. [ laughter ] i was like, really? >> lara: my gosh. >> rebecca: that's why you don't read the comments. >> they're flying by and you're supposed to address them. somebody said, where's your mother? i was like, dead. [ laughter ] we need to find joy in this. >> rebecca: what i'm curious about, you cover so many areas. your daughters are incredible. is there anything that scares you still at this point? any areas you wouldn't go at this point? >> no.

i would be very disingenuous if i didn't come to share my truth. do you know what i mean? yes, everybody's gonna want to talk about my netterlands again. there's a chapter about them. but it was a way of talking about the healthcare system. [ talking at the same time ] >> women go through stuff. we need to be able to say, this isn't fair. we need to be able to self-advocate. >> rebecca: yeah. >> lara: we need community. to know we're not alone in this. >> i had a seizure not too long ago. the two male doctors kept saying, are you reducing salt for dietary reasons? i was like, no. i'm a 59-year-old woman who looks younger bloated, no.

give me some potato chips. you wouldn't say that to a man. >> robin: never. >> i hate that -- that's not what the book is. it's not reducing the men in our lives. but it's just time to explore this without yelling, without being angry. >> lara: so smart. so well written. tell us what you told your girls. >> we talk about this with ali all the time. we don't have to yell louder. we just have to be secure in what we believe and what we need to have be heard because we're not gonna get anywhere by just screaming. >> lara: right. >> so i think, i mean, my girls love my relationship with your wife. your girls love it. we're modelling female friendships that are based on lifting each other up, laughing, you know, being there in good times and bad times. just sort of saying, hey, we're pretty lucky to be here.

>> lara: you talk a lot about friendship. i was going to segue. seems like a perfect time because it's ali's birthday. you have such a beautiful friendship. what are you most proud of about that particular bond and how was last night? >> lara: yeah. >> because i'm different. it's a different friendship. you looked around that room last night and everybody was from different eras. nobody was trying to one up the next one. we were all just like, how did you meet? how did this happen? who she is brought together this very beautiful great group of fabulous women. couldn't be more different. it was really nice. that, to me, is the most -- and being okay with relationships changing. spousal relationships, partners, your friendships change. you have to be willing to be okay with it and move through it, you know? maybe i don't have the same relationship with that high school friend that i did. does that make it any more invalid? no. you know, people get uncomfortable with that. >> robin: you kept it real.

adoringly. they're back. rashard and troy, founders of "earn your leisure." they have a new book out called "you deserve to be rich." so glad to have you back. happy new year to you both. >> happy to be here. >> robin: millions, millions look to you all for assistance when it comes to finance and money. why is the the right time for the book? >> we've been in the business for over six years. we have thousands of hours on social media, podcasts. it can become hard for people that just want to know where to start. >> robin: yes. >> we wanted to talk about real estate, stocks, talk about business, all the things we've championed over the course of the last five or six years, but have it in a book format so people can go to it and have it as a reference point to navigate life. >> robin: people have been asking, when's the book coming out?

it's the start of a new year. people want to get their finances off on the right start. what is your formula for an annual budget? >> we want to make sure we have a plan. if we don't, we're going to fail. we created a plan, 100% of the money we bring in. first thing we want to have 55% go to spending. not frivolous spending. life necessities, bills, mortgage. these things add up over time. we have to allocate money for that. next piece is investing. that's the only way to build wealth. we can work hard but that's not gonna get us there. we want to make sure we invest 20% of the income. next is savings. 15% needs to go to that. there will always be emergencies. somebody will need something. you might fall into a pitfall. last 10% charitable. we are big on giving back. that's part of our fundamentals. >> robin: you've just broken it down. i appreciate you talking about

generational wealth. let's help some folks this morning, okay. different times in your life, different seasons in your life, different strategies. if somebody is in their 20s, what is one thing they can do this year? >> they should try an clean up their credit and pay off debt. that's important. snowball method is a strategy where you pay off smaller credit cards first and then use that money to pay off the larger amount. it also starts with the 401k. start to invest in the stock market in general. >> robin: i love how you break it down. not all 401k's are alike. in the book you break down what could work best for you. all right. 20s and 30s. let's go 30s and 40s. got a young family. what's the strategy there? >> family is important. now you're preparing for your future. you want to make sure policies are updated over time. now you got children, you have a wife.

make sure your beneficiaries are updated. make sure you start planning for your future. college funds are important. 529 plans. accounts are important. instead of your kids asking for money at 18, you can invest in the wealthiest companies in the world. at 18 they'll have their own money. >> robin: i remember saying can i have as opposed to loan. if i said loan, that meant i had to give it back. there was a difference there. for those that are heading toward their retirement year, what is the strategy there? >> you want to make sure your estate plan is in order. your will, trust, beneficiaries are up to date. also want to look at annuities. you will start taking out of your investment accounts. now you're on the downward trajectory. everybody can make it up the mountain. getting down is important. >> robin: i'm approaching that time in my life, being more conservative, as far as some investments. what are the biggest mistakes we make? >> the biggest mistake people invest in things they're not educated in.

fomo is a real thing in life, and also in finance. people will see words, bitcoin, hear about stocks and try to invest on them on the way up. >> robin: what is your advice for people saying, it's the start of a new year. i'm gonna get this book. i love earn your leisure and what you mean by that and how people can attain that. >> you have to start. that's the hardest part for people. everybody puts together a plan for new year's. i want to lose weight. i want to become financially free. two weeks into it that plan gets abandoned. break it down into small steps. don't be discouraged. if it's $100 a month you're saving, that's good. trying to pay off one credit card, work on that. if your goal is to have a will by february, work on that. the most important thing is not to get discouraged and to start. >> robin: secret to getting ahead is just getting started. gentlemen, i said we're gonna have you back. i'm so glad that you did. congratulation on just the impact you're having on so many
