of red flag warning, a quote particularly dangerous situation. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us on this special edition of abc seven news. let's get you caught up now on the very latest from the southern california wildfires. >> the newest fire is burning near oxnard in ventura county. this is being called the auto fire. it started around 8 p.m. an estimated 75 firefighters are battling these flames, both on the ground and in the air. now, the helicopter reporter for our sister station in los angeles says they have slowed the forward progress of the flames. this is burning in a riverbed, the santa clara river, near some golf courses. so the immediate area is not residential, but there is an evacuation order placed in place anyway. no structures are threatened. traffic on northbound 101 nearby is shut down with high winds tonight. these flames could spread quickly. >> all right, let's bring in the latest now on the weather forecast. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. with the current conditions and the red flag warning now in effect. sandhya. >> that's right. dan and ama,

that area is under a red flag warning right now. so let's take a look at the conditions near the auto fire. it is 57 degrees. look at the relative humidity. it is so low 15%. easterly wind at 13. the gusts have been asnd high as 33 miles an hour. looking at the hourly forecast for that region, the windy conditions are going to persist. winds are going to ramp up as we head towards the overnight hours into tomorrow morning, so hopefully the crews can continue to gain ground. there are multiple fires still burning in southern california. palisades fire over 23,000 acres. this is a particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning gusts 45 to 70 miles an hour. relative humidity 8 to 15%. and that red flag warning until wednesday night. this is something that doesn't get issued very often. this is the fourth time it's been issued in the last three months for southern california. it is rare. 39 mile an hour winds right now in malibu. as we go, hour by hour, those winds do pick up as we head into the overnight hours and

going into tomorrow morning, simi valley, 37 miles an hour. gusty winds will continue into wednesday. and part of the issue is it's been so dry. i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming up. >> dan so dry. it's just terrible. sandhya thanks very much. now let me show you this map from cal fire, which shows you the active wildfires in southern california. the newest one we've talked about here is the auto fire near oxnard. you can see that there up in the corner. the biggest fire, again, is, of course, the palisades fire burning near malibu. that's in this area here now, up to 14% containment. it has scorched more than 23,000 acres. just a devastating fire. all right, let's move out to the other, other active wildfire in southern california, which is still on the cal fire's map is the hurst fire. and we'll show you the hurst fire burning. here's the eaton fire. forgive me. good start. let me start with the eaton fire. containment from that is up to 33% now, which is not bad. so they've had some improvement. more than 14,000 acres burned in the eaton

fire. evacuations are still in effect, but today, more people were allowed to return home to see what was left. with any luck, their homes were still standing. again, the other active wildfire in southern california is on cal fire's map. still. now let's talk about the hurst fire. you see it burning right here? it's burned 800 acres, much smaller. it's near sylmar and is 97% contained. so that's some really encouraging news on that fire. so they are making some progress. and in the wake of all the fires, california is bracing for another hit to its already complicated insurance crisis. how much? >> in the wake of the l.a. wildfires, california is bracing for another hit to its already complicated insurance crisis. something seven on your side has been investigating. it stems from the state's fair plan that provides basic fire insurance for high risk properties when other companies will not. the fair plan caps insurance payments for natural disasters at $3 million for residential

property holders. that price tag is important given there are now at least 33 bay area cities where the average home value exceeds $2 million. that's according to zillow. >> with the cap being at $3 million, you're talking about a high percentage of homes not being able to get coverage up to a certain amount. that's going to drastically change how the market is going to be moving forward. >> and he predicts if the california fair plan doesn't raise the $3 million cap, the housing market is going to slow down and buyers are likely to encounter even higher prices and interest rates. >> well, a much needed win for los angeles tonight on the football field against the minnesota vikings. the game was supposed to happen in los angeles, but was moved to a state farm stadium in arizona because of the wildfires. you watch it live right here on abc seven tonight, including a tribute to those dealing with the fires. >> los angeles, i love you, we love you, and we are with you. >> that was former rams captain

andrew whitworth with the microphone there before the national anthem. there was a moment of silence to honor the firefighters who were on the front lines of the wildfires and those who have lost so much. the rams won the game 27 to 9 and advance now to the divisional round of the playoffs. they will face the philadelphia eagles on sunday. >> the upcoming grammy awards will be a fundraiser to support wildfire relief efforts. the ceremony on february 2nd will also honor first responders, the recording academy says, along with the nonprofit musicares, it has donated $1 million to support music creatives and professionals affected by the fires. and you can help as well. go to redcross.org. slash abc to help the red cross respond to those in need. >> still to come here, you'll see how local animal shelters are helping make way for pets evacuated and lost in the southern califoa wildfires. we're talking about more than cats and dogs, too. >> and next, brazen burglaries and robberies across the east bay. hear from frustrated business owners

is waiting to be discovered. did you know you can do this? ... and you don't wanna miss that. in san jose at a barn this afternoon. put up a big plume of smoke, as you can see. check out the time lapse video. the barn was attached to a house by monterey road near old tully road. san jose fire says ammunition stored in the barn exploded. people inside and three dogs were safely evacuated. >> our understanding was the building was unoccupied. the owner was here and let us know

that everybody had been out and cleared, so there was no uh- and nobody found inside the barn. >> that's the good news. the barn is a total loss, but the main house is salvageable. we're told a pickup truck was also burned. the fire was extinguished within about an hour. the cause is being investigated. >> we have seen a number of brazen burglaries and robberies across the east bay in recent weeks. business owners say they are fed up. abc seven news anchor dion lim spoke with police who say crime is down, but it doesn't feel that way to anyone who's been targeted. >> they come in, they raid the store, take all the cigarettes, try to steal the atm machine and they leave. >> hands raised in the air. watch as this gas station employee on mlk junior way at 55th street near children's hospital in north oakland, is confronted by several masked robbers early monday morning. in a matter of minutes, the thieves clear the shelves and even use trash cans to steal nearly 2000 packs of cigarettes at this location and the gas station next door. both are owned by

arash salkey. >> the profit margins are so low i'm even considering not even carrying stickers anymore in my stores. >> salkey owns four gas stations in oakland, and says in the ten years he's been operating in the city, robbers have gotten more brazen. >> i have put security gates. i have put bollards so the cars don't run into the storefronts anymore. >> but watch as thieves penetrate a bullet resistant barrier at a high street location. less than two weeks ago, thieves bashed their way through to steal all the cigarettes in sight. >> i feel like it's a cat and mouse game that we're playing. >> in nearby alameda, police confirm several burglaries already this year. which cars rammed after hours, although police tell us burglaries were down 41% in 2024 compared to the year before. bold, high profile incidents like these create a perception problem. this year alone in oakland, there have been multiple incidents of robbers seeking cigarettes and cash and others using vehicles to crash in and damage or take atms. oakland police have been touting robberies are down 8%

year to date. this former gas station employee in san leandro, who didn't want to show her face on camera, doesn't necessarily believe the statistics, and says crime feels more widespread. >> i left my job because of that. you're not going to come and steal cigarettes and put my life at risk. >> so he is at his wits end and says something needs to change fast. >> i have written letters to the mayor. i have gone to oakland pd. everyone talks a big game and has a great solution, but there's no proof in the pudding. nothing's going to accomplish. if this continues, i will be shutting down my stores in oakland and alameda. >> police say the investigations are ongoing in the east bay. dion lim, abc seven news. >> and we have a tool that will get you detailed information about crime where you live. find our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker is at abc seven news.com, or on our abc seven bay area app. >> all right. let's go back down south now. talk about the weather forecast. of course, the winds that were so terrible a few days ago, the santa ana winds, they are returning. yes.

>> so let's get to meteorologist sandhya patel for the latest. sandhya. yeah. >> and ama and dan, those winds are not going to be nearly as strong as last week's event, but it is definitely prompting another red flag warning. this is a particularly dangerous situation. red flag warning for southern california until 6 p.m. wednesday. let's take a look at the wind gusts hour by hour. once again, 36 miles an hour. malibu at 11 p.m. you will notice those winds are still going into the morning hours. 34 camarillo. 36 acton. getting close to 40 miles an hour tomorrow night. going into wednesday morning, it is a drying wind. you combine that with a severe drought across southern california, and you can see why the fire risk is in the extreme category shaded here in pink. so let's check out the rainfall for the water year so far since october 1st, northern california has been doing pretty good 138% of average for redding, 108. in sacramento, even san francisco is above. but look at the southern california

regions only three hundredths in los angeles at 1% of average, san diego only 4%. here's the setup. high pressure building in behind a low that has dropped down. the winds are just funneling between the high and the low, and so southern california is going to get the brunt of this. looking at live doppler seven, we do have a few clouds passing through the region. the winds that we had have backed off since yesterday 34 miles an hour. hawkeye though atlas peak is 20, so it's still breezy in the north bay hills. and that goes on tonight. calistoga, 29 miles an hour in the wee hours of the morning. and then the winds will really dial back. here's a look at the peak gusts. healdsburg hills, 79 miles an hour. mount saint helena 74. even oakland hills. hawkeye were up there over 50 miles an hour. lower elevations had gusty winds as well as the winds are subsiding. frost advisories going up tomorrow morning. temperatures as low as the mid 30s expecting frost to form. a live view from kgo roof camera. it is 51 in the city, 50 in san jose, but

everybody else from oakland to half moon bay in the 40s and from our east bay hills. camera. notice how still this view is 39 in santa rosa. it's getting cold. petaluma 36 currently concord at 44, in livermore, 38 degrees a clear view from golden gate overnight. breezy in the hills going into tomorrow morning. that's when it's going to be chilly with areas of frost and the rest of the week dry, sunny days continue tonight, 40s and 50s tomorrow morning, temperatures dropping off, and then in the afternoon they'll come right back up into the 50s and the 60s with clear skies. so your morning temperatures bottoming out in the low 30s for the coldest inland valleys, mid 30s around the east bay like livermore. inland east bay. and here's a look at your afternoon highs. wall to wall sunshine once again 50s and 60s. your accuweather seven day forecast. it's a chilly start in the morning. we are expecting breezy conditions in the hills, but later on in the day the winds ease. it's another cold one wednesday morning followed by sunshine and that pattern

plan for his return to the white house. it all begins on saturday. activities include a maga rally, a fireworks display, and three inaugural balls. trump and vice president elect j.d. vance are scheduled to be sworn in at noon on monday. carrie underwood is tapped to sing during the inauguration. the presidential inaugural parade follows. the only california participant is the merced county sheriff's posse. we will, of course, have live inauguration coverage on monday, january 20t, right here on abc seven. governor newsom announced he is expanding the scope of his special legislative session to now include wildfire response

and recovery. he's asking a state lawmakers to come up with $2.5 billion in funding for los angeles. it would go toward battling the flames and helping people rebuild. it came after assembly republicans called on newsom to focus on the wildfires, not a trump legal defense fund. >> the special session was ridiculous to begin with, but especially now with the wildfires that we're experiencing here in california, the impending insurance crisis, incoming president donald trump has threatened to withhold federal wildfire aid from california for california. >> newsom sent a letter to trump asking him to tour los angeles. no update if a visit will happen soon. >> a group called saving california launched a new recall effort today aimed at governor newsom, and some members of this group were also involved in the failed 2021 recall effort. the founder of snapchat posted today that his dad's home, where he

started the business, burned down in the palisades fire. in a post titled dear los angeles, i love you, evan spiegel, stanford graduate, writes, quote, los angeles, my heart breaks for you and yet i love you even more. the city of angels who covered in soot are already beginning again. he says the company has donated $5 million to relief efforts. animal shelters across the country are stepping up to help pets displaced by the wildfires there, taking in adoptable animals from southern california shelters to make room for lost and evacuated pets. abc seven news reporter luz pena visited the marin humane shelter today to see how they are helping. >> as fires continue to burn, volunteers from across california are responding to one of the biggest needs. l.a.to one animal shelters are facing sending down trained staff to l.a. to help the shelters there, because their staff is absolutely overwhelmed and exhausted. they're transporting dogs, cats, and other small animals out of l.a. area to free

up shelter space. last week, the san diego humane society transported 39 dogs from the pasadena humane society. over the weekend, marin humane welcomed 46 animals to the bay area. >> you can see all the ones that have the pink signs on it. those are all from l.a. county. guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, including a couple of babies that were recently born and with more powerful winds on the way. >> the mission to get animals out of los angeles is ramping up to take in some of the animals that were in shelters. >> they're already awaiting adoption, because if we transfer those animals to the bay area, then the shelters in la have space to care for the pets of evacuees. >> marin humane welcomed the first group of animals, hoping bay area residents adopt them here. >> i mean, like, look at the little face. there are a lot of fun. >> noodle is one of two dogs that came from la and now he needs a home. noodle, do you like the bay area? yes, yes.

a new san mateo county supervisor, jackie speier, plans to present a code of conduct resolution during her first full board of supervisors meeting. in a statement, speier says the code includes ten principles of the county's commitment to integrity. board president david canepa has co-sponsored the resolution. the code does not mention any position ores not department in particular, but it does come as san mateo county faces an ongoing legal battle with sheriff christina corpus. she is accused of intimidation, conflicts of interest and corruption, but denies any wrongdoing. >> tonight, an example of building a better bay area. and it comes in berkeley, when the owner of an apartment building passed away. tenants worried that their building would be bought and flipped into an unaffordable luxury property, and they'd have to leave. so these residents of the 12 unit building banded together and got

help from a community partner to turn this building in south berkeley into an affordable housing cooperative. the residents led the effort by convincing the city council to allocate funding for the co-op to the city's small sites program. this ultimately allowed the bay area community land trust to purchase the building. >> so this is our own little way in berkeley of preventing price gouging and driving families into the street because no one makes it alone. we're in this together. and right now, these families here are protected. >> the cost to purchase and then to renovate these units is less than half the cost of building new affordable housing in the area. so it is efficient and cost effective. two vacant units will be made available as rentals to the public at $1,200 for a studio and $1,500 for a one bedroom. a unique solution to a problem to deal with california's rising housing costs. good for them.
