discovered aaron was texting his ex-fiance asking to get back together. >> when she found the text message, i was at crossroads of my life and i needed to make a change. >> denise and aaron talked it over for hours at his house. >> we had to rebuild trust, but as long as he was willing to really give this a full shot, then we could try again. >> they eventually went to bed around midnight. then at 3 a.m, a voice says, wake up, this is a robbery. an intruder wearing a wet suit was in the bedroom, laying zip ties on the bed. the intruder told denise to bind aaron's feet together and his hands behind his back, then ordered her to walk to the bedroom closet. >> he got my laptop and then forced me to give up my social security number, my bank accounts. >> he covered their eyes with swimming goggles that have been covered in duct tape to block their sight and put headphones on them, then drugged them with

a sedative. >> tells me i need to stay there till the morning. i have to call in sick to work and they had given me denise's passcode to her phone. i needed to text her boss and tell him that she had a family emergency. was going to be gone for a week. >> aaron was also told he would have to withdraw money from his bank. the intruder kidnaped denise, putting her in the trunk of aaron's car alone and drugged. aaron tried to stay awake but couldn't. >> my alarm went off and i called, called in sick. >> hours later, he called police, who he says were immediately suspicious of his story. >> with her confronted with is a man who said that his girlfriend was kidnaped in the middle of the night. there is a crazy story about this home invasion. they see all the components of what you might expect to see objectively in a domestic violence murder. >> aaron agreed to go to the station to give a statement.

didn't call last night when this occurred, chronicling how denise and aaron were social pariahs, their innocence questioned by law enforcement. >> i had gone from a murderer to now committing a hoax. >> from this point forward, i will not refer to them as a victim or a witness. >> lieutenant park never outright called aaron quinn or denise huskins. liars. he never used the word hoax. but if you listen to the entire press conference, the whole premise of it is that the two of them were lying and that this kidnaping never happened. >> the fact that we've essentially wasted all of these resources for really nothing is upsetting. >> little did they know that about 40 miles away in dublin, california, a dogged female police officer was connecting denise's story with mueller, who had just been identified as a suspect in a dublin home invasion. >> they had located the suspect of the home invasion. they were

going to serve a search warrant. there were several swim goggles that were duct taped black. one in particular had a blond hair strand attached to the duct tape. the dublin home invasion. none of them had blond hair. >> officer misty caruso contacted the fbi. >> i said, i have this suspect in custody who may be a person of interest to you in the vallejo kidnaping case that you guys deemed a hoax. and he told me that it wasn't the fbi saying that it was a hoax, and that it was vallejo pd that said it was a hoax. >> in 2017, matthew mueller entered a guilty plea to denise's kidnaping and was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison. later this week, he is scheduled to appear in court again on the new charges. denise and aaron, now married, received a $2.5 million settlement from the city of vallejo in 2018 with no admission of wrongdoing. and

showing it for education. >> like i'm putting myself out there and being vulnerable for other people. >> thank you so much. okay. >> in my opinion, bailon has one of the more severe cases of tourette syndrome. >> her mother. that's that's the one thing that i'm so embarrassed about is my coprolalia. like, i'm embarrassed by it. >> growing up in west virginia, her tics were mild, unnoticeable, even her condition undiagnosed. but after the pandemic hit, they started to become unmanageable. doctors telling her she had tourette's at 18. >> it was mild until it wasn't. and that's exactly when we started learning more about tourette. just kind of goes in like these. awful, like waves. >> what are some of the toughest days? >> like walking? my legs lock up a lot. i have a lot of leg tics. it's hard to even brush my own teeth, do my makeup, like, do everything in someone's daily day that someone usually doesn't

think about. i am in consistent pain with my neck. like, it's always like, never healed. i have like, a back brace, a neck brace that i wear for like, when i throw my head back. mom, look at all the people in there. my tics can come from anything. i have a gun. >> maybe trying to whisper it into her. >> her explosive outbursts, her involuntary movements creating incredible obstacles to overcome. >> there is a scenario that happened where i was being followed around a store by one of my people that were in my grade, and i was being bullied, and i could obviously tell. and i was afraid of myself. like, i didn't like myself. i was in therapy so many days a week. like just trying to figure out why me? >> i can't even imagine how exhausting that kind of must feel for you. how do you, like, soothe yourself through god and taking care of myself in ways that i've learned how to do?
