in the world, now allegedly the target of a stalker. authorities say he sent the wnba star sexually explicit messages, many of them, and traveled from texas to indiana to try to see her. here's nightline correspondent ashan singh. reporter. clerk for the lead. >> you back. >> if you've so much as turned on a tv this year, there's no doubt you've seen the highlights. >> caitlin clark running a masterclass right now for the indiana offense. connects on a bomb. >> caitlin clark, wnba superstar. rookie of the year for the indiana fever, setting the league on fire with their dazzling play on the court. >> caitlin clark has become one of the great sensations in american sports. the way she plays the game is exciting and different, and that's a big piece of it. >> and off the court, if i can sign with gatorade, you can too. becoming a global branding icon signing blockbuster deals with the likes of gatorade, nike and

state farm. >> like a good neighbor, state farm is there. >> hey, state farm is here to help. >> so she truly is part of the culture. it's not just sports. you know the fact she's only 22, so she is really only just begun. >> but in an indianapolis courtroom today, clark and an alleged breach of her safety is at the center of a criminal case. >> good morning, mr. lewis. >> a texas man, 55 year old michael thomas lewis, is charged with felony stalking of clark. a plea of not guilty entered on his behalf. despite the surprising outburst. >> guilty? no. >> in a five page court document filed on january 11th, lewis is charged with repeated or continuing harassment of caitlin clark. prosecutors say clark felt terrorized, frightened, intimidated or threatened and was in reasonable fear of sexual battery. prosecutors saying that lewis sent these threatening and sexually explicit messages to clark on x. some seemed to indicate how close lewis may have gotten to clark. lewis allegedly writing, been driving around your house three times a

day. in another message, allegedly writing i'm getting tickets. i'm sitting behind the bench. in another, we're coming to you live from downtown indy. >> anybody that develops fascinations with other people and are willing to travel to their location, stay in a hotel that's actually close to the stadium where caitlin clark plays. i mean, that's all concerning behavior as far as law enforcement is concerned. >> the indiana fever are currently in their off season. clark is not the first or only celebrity to allege this kind of stalking. >> well, new york city police arrested a man for stalking taylor swift for the third time. >> global superstar taylor swift has faced a slew of alleged stalkers over her career. >> a grants pass man is being accused of stalking uconn basketball player paige bueckers. >> and just last month, a man in connecticut pleaded guilty to stalking college basketball superstar paige bueckers. >> the internet is a terrible place for many, many people, including the way young women are treated. famous young women

and young women who are accessible. they're playing a game or they're going to an event. and this is an incredibly troubling scenario. >> there was an airtag put on my car, and i didn't know until i got home. >> stalking in sports also highlighted on the netflix show america's sweethearts dallas cowboys cheerleaders. >> i had to call the police and file a police report, but there's never anything that they can do until somebody hurts me. >> how did you react when you first heard about caitlin clark having a potential stalker? >> i was stunned and disappointed. you worry for these women because with the rise in popularity, there's, you know, a lot of negativity as well. >> retired wnba superstar and espn analyst rebecca lobo says female athletes face unique vulnerabilities. would you say that female athletes are vulnerable to specific cases like this, in ways that male athletes are not?

>> well, just for the simple fact of being a woman, you're going to be vulnerable in different ways, of course, than than a male is going to be in general when it comes to wnba players, i think wnba security is commensurate with nba security. i think they take things very seriously, especially now that the wnba flies their teams and their players charter, that they provide those security measures. i think the big difference you're going to see is the wnba players, when they're out of season, the max wnba salary is $225,000. an nba player is making millions and millions of dollars. so when it comes to financing your own security, they simply don't have the same financial resources that the men players do. >> sports stars also grapple with their schedules and their lives on social media, being more public and available than ever. >> i think one of the things that's hard is people have a lot of access to you and your daily whereabouts. when i was playing,

we used to, you know, we would fly commercially, then we would, you know, take the escalator down to baggage claim and there would be fans there. and it was always pleasant experiences, but these people knew what flight you were on and when you were going to arrive in their city and wanted things signed. >> as harrowing as it sounds, stalking is much more common than we like to believe. with an estimated 13.5 million americans stalked each year, according to the stalking prevention, awareness and resource center, who estimates nearly 1 in 3 women will experience stalking in their lifetime. >> that's an astronomical number of people, and in my sense is that number is probably low. i think it's probably higher than that. >> clark's terrifying ordeal comes on the heels of yet another groundbreaking year. last month, time magazine named clark its 2024 athlete of the year. >> she's the most requested guest in the history of our show, and earlier this month, appearing on the hit podcast new heights with jason and travis kelce. is there any accomplishment, i guess, of all these accolades that has meant

the most to you? >> oh gosh, that's a good question. well, i'd give you the answer my mom would say is probably academic all-american. >> but while all of this positive news was happening in clark's orbit privately, authorities say she was receiving those threatening messages. police say that clark's alleged stalker, lewis, traveled from texas to indianapolis, where he was staying as of last week when approached by investigators on january 8th, he's alleged to have said the relationship was imaginary, but investigators say the messages continued. he was arrested on january 12th. >> he fits. certainly the profile of so many stalkers where the obsession and the drive and the fantasy of a relationship with somebody like a caitlin clark is just too much for them, and he becomes their entire identity. and that's very concerning about where that might go. >> in court documents, clark told authorities she had altered her public appearances and patterns of movement due to fear for her safety. >> she had to change the way she

was moving around town and her public appearances. and, you know, she was truly scared. >> lewis is still being held in an indiana jail, awaiting his next court appearance in march. he's been ordered to stay away from caitlin clark, her boyfriend and the facility where her indiana fever team play. >> i think one of the things with caitlin is that she has proven time and time again that she can kind of push all of this to the side, but i would imagine that she certainly is going to make sure that she does everything in her. people are going to make sure that they do everything to keep her as safe as possible. >> our thanks to austin, we turn now to kate middleton, the princess of wales, declaring she's in remission from the cancer that made global headlines. and now giving back to those she said were such a comfort to her. along the way, the princess of wales surprising cancer patients at a london hospital.

>> very nice to meet you too. >> while she might be the new patron of the royal marsden hospital, she's been a patient here too. for the first time today, her royal highness revealing she is in remission from her own fight with cancer. >> thank you. yeah. you're okay? stay strong. >> okay. >> it's lovely to meet some of the patients here. >> the mom of three. giving comfort and courage to those in the midst of their cancer battles. >> i think it's really important for people to kind of have someone so high profile going through this experience, because i think it will allow people to talk about it more. >> they needed the support just as much as i did as a patient. >> kate marking her major milestone, writing in an instagram post it is a relief to now be in remission and i remain focused on recovery. i am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. >> today i feel great. >> the news comes nearly a year after she stunned the world with a video announcing her diagnosis, and that she'd be stepping back from royal duties in january, i underwent major

abdominal surgery in london, and at the time it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. >> the surgery was successful, however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. >> the palace still hasn't shared what type of cancer the princess had. kate, of course, not alone, her father in law king charles also announcing his own battle with cancer last february. the princess of wales gradually returning to royal duty, having only made a few key appearances last year, she voiced this video. >> i cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. >> prince william celebrating his wife on her 43rd birthday just a few days ago, underscoring her resilience, writing on instagram to the most incredible wife and mother. the strength you've shown over the last year has been remarkable, and we all wish her well. tonight when we come back, we're one on one with brooke shields. why? she says aging should be celebrated, not feared.

>> so many people remember pretty baby. >> stop being so cheeky with me or i'll get my voodoo woman to gregory all over your piano. >> and now you are kind of speaking about aging, how it affects women, and sort of embracing it and owning it. why now? talk about aging. >> i mean, it's something that i'm going through in real time, you know, and it does have its there are frightening parts about it. but the thing that has been the most unbelievable to me is the joy that's in it. and when i realized that people weren't talking about this era in a woman's life in the same way that i was feeling like i was living it. and yes, there are challenges, there's biological challenges, there's beauty challenges. there's all of these different things. we all go through these trials and tribulations. and this shouldn't be like the big bad wolf, scary,

scary, scary dread that we've been fed. it just became so much more evident to me that we needed to change the way we look at this era in a woman's life and celebrate it differently, and to change the conversation too. >> and you are one who is willing to have the conversation. in fact, you bravely talked about, you know, sexual assault in your life. in the 2023 documentary pretty baby brooke, let's just take a look at one of the clips, brooke, from that, it was so dismissed that i just threw my hands up and i thought, you know what? >> i'm not. i refuse to be a victim because this is something that happens no matter who you are and no matter what you think you're prepared for or not, you may have changed lives by talking about that. brooke, i think i've been lucky enough to have a platform, but what i have

found important to me is first, to have my actual truth be what comes out first, rather than just always speculation and people talking about me, which was my whole life. so that was important. and as i got a voice and started, you know, had an education, was able to write books, i started realizing the value of just telling my truths or honesty. and so when you see someone who is a public figure at least willing to just say, look, this is it. this is what happened, it does seem to give people permission to not feel guilty or embarrassed or shame. shame or any of the above that we put ourselves through. >> and that's one of the things that i have always admired about you, because you are willing to be vulnerable and be personal. i mean, even in the book, you talk about a very personal situation in which you went in for a gynecologic procedure. >> and i knew that, you know,

once again, something about that area of my anatomy would become, you know, clickbait. but i thought, you know, you can't really not be fully honest about something that was so shocking to you. we need to manage what we're how we're looking at women, women's health advocacy, all of that. women's rights, all of it. without being angry, just being really owning yourself. >> the book is just so fabulous. brooke shields is not allowed to get old, and you've defined beauty for women for many, many years. but you say that you've not allowed beauty to define you. how have you not fallen into the trap? >> it was such a focal point. it was such a i mean, i thought, oh my god, enough. like, i don't want to even look at myself, you know, it's not lost on me that i'm part of the narrative that that feeds beauty, you know, that i was a symbol of that. so

i have to be really honest and not be a hypocrite with that either, and say, you know what? you know, it paid the bills, but you were a part of that conversation and you perpetuated it. now, i didn't set out to it, but it welcomed me and i got to make a living. so i just i think that it i it's always made me uncomfortable because i've always thought that it was the least important part of who i was. but i think that i always sort of felt that beauty was just such a fraught topic for people. you know, we measure ourselves in that, and it can be dangerous. >> i think it's so interesting. and you talk in the book about feeling free and enjoying your 50s, and we're seeing viola davis, we're seeing demi moore, we're seeing pamela anderson, women who are getting their flowers. and brooke shields, of course, is in that category. what does it feel like seeing this conversation that you're talking about, sort of bearing
