francisco, 26 minutes. so although there are some cars out there right now, not too bad just yet. amanda reggie aqui. >> thanks, gloria. a week ago we watched this unfold live right here on abc. seven mornings. entire communities devoured by huge flames that were sweeping across portions of los angeles county. >> and we now know at least 25 people have died. and this morning the firestorm is gone. but millions of people are still on high alert. dangerous winds are in the forecast for southern california into this afternoon, and the potential for more fire is very high right now. these are the fires keeping thousands of firefighters busy this morning. the palisades, the eaton, the hearst and the auto fires. none of the fires have grown in the past 24 hours. that's the promising news. crews have made good progress increasing containment lines ahead of the return of the winds. >> as containment grows, people are starting to return to see what is left. many are sorting through the ash and rubble, trying to find anything that may have

survived. >> that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it. oh my god. oh my god! oh my god. >> oh my god. oh my god. oh my god. oh my what. >> oh my gosh. we found it. we found it. >> a brief moment of relief for this couple. the man there is a pasadena firefighter who lost his home in the fires. he says his sons asked if their basketball hoop survived. it did not. he has no plans on taking them to see the property any time soon. >> as state and local leaders are focusing on relf and recovery efforts in la, politics are starting to come into play. this morning, another effort to recall governor newsom is underway. organizers say they plan to file the papers in the next two weeks for what they are calling a, quote, series ofy are catastrophic failures before the

fires. the governor has also faced attacks from president elect donald trump only hours after the fire started. this week, republicans in congress suggested federal assistance for california should come with conditions. east bay congressman eric swalwell says this is not what we should be focused on right now. >> people in the area are still in evacuation zones and are not in their homes. i don't think that's what they want right now. they just they want their government to do what government is supposed to do, which is respond to a crisis and take care of them. >> an adviser for the governor tells abc seven news he is, quote, 100% focused on the fires, ongoing rescue efforts and the recovery process, not politics. >> the canadian firefighting plane, known as the super scooper, is back in the air over l.a. county a week after it got damaged when a drone hit it. the plane is quite a sight. when it is put into service, it can drop 1500 gallons of water at a time. despite their impressive capabilities, the state has been

leasing two of them for 90 day periods for the last three decades, according to l.a. county fire. some are wondering why the state hasn't just invested in buying the aircraft. firefighting experts say it comes down to the state's specific needs and limitations. >> in our helicopters, they're able to quickly access water and drop it into an area that they can access that the aircraft the planes, may not be able to. >> experts say there are also environmental impacts. the super scoopers use salt water from the ocean that can be coercive, and salt can make it harder for plants to grow. after a fire, the state's air tankers drop fire retardant mixed with water that act as a fertilizer. we are staying on top of all the developments coming out of the wildfires in la county. you can get updates as they happen at abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app. >> san francisco mayor daniel lurie, taking bold action during his first week as leader of the city. yesterday, the mayor sent the board of supervisors his first proposed law to combat the fentanyl crisis. and today, the

work begins to get his proposal passed. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in san francisco with the details of this ambitious plan. lena. >> hey, amanda, good morning to you. yesterday, mayor lori introduced the fentanyl state of emergency ordinance to the board of supervisors. this isthe board something he already promised to do on day one during his inauguration speech last week. mayor lurie's office says the ordinance will unlock funding and expedite hiring and contracting. it will also speed up the city's process for partnering with nonprofits to provide behavioral health services and address street conditions. lurie said in his inauguration speech that he wants to send a clear message to the city and the country that you do not come to san francisco to deal drugs or do drugs on our streets, and if you do, you will be held accountable. >> the fentanyl crisis isn't a 9 to 5 operation. it doesn't take breaks and neither will we.

that's why i'm introducing a package of fentanyl. state of emergency ordinances. this will allow us to further surge resources and bypass the bureaucratic hurdles standing in the way of tackling this crisis. i look forward to working with the incoming board of supervisors for their quick approval. >> the board still has to approve the ordinance before anything moves forward. later this morning, mayor lori will join a group of supervisors and public safety department heads such as the police chief, fire chief, sheriff and others to talk about the city's current efforts to combat the fentanyl crisis and strategies for strength for strengthening that work. we are expected to hear from the mayor and some of those public safety leaders following that meeting this morning at 11. live in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena. thank you. today, the senate will hold more confirmation hearings for president elect donald trump's cabinet nominees. gloria is at the live desk with who we're

going to hear from today. and the dramatic hearing we saw yesterday. >> good morning to you, reggie. today, president elect trump's pick for attorney general, pam bondi, will face the senate committee on capitol hill. she is likely to face questions over trump's pledge to use the doj to seek out revenge on his political enemies. bondi's hearing comes after pete hegseth confirmation hearing yesterday. he's been accusef sexual misconduct, financial crimes and excessive drinking, which may impact his confirmation. there were some very tense moments between hegseth and democrats as they faced scrutiny from former combat veterans on his shifting views on women in combat roles. >> you say you care about keeping our armed forces strong and that you like that our armed forces meritocracy. then let's not lower the standards for you. you, sir, are a no go at this station. >> as secretary of defense, will you support women continuing tol have the opportunity to serve in combat roles? >> yes. women will have access to ground combat roles. combat rose. given the standards remain

high. >> meanwhile, president joe biden is set to address the nation one final time. the address will be made from the oval office, where he announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential campaign. tonight, president biden will make that farewell address to the nation from behind the resolute desk. abc seven will carry the event live. it is scheduled to start at 5:00. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. 509 and we'll take you to southern california, where we're looking at the current wind speeds right now, still underneath that red flag warning for good reason. we're seeing winds and some of our highest peaks right now, gusting 40 to 50mph. but you notice down on the valley floor, the winds are not as strong. beverly hills, burbank. we're seeing winds less than 20mph, but we're still underneath that red flag warning. but also, it's that time of the year. we're in the middle of winter. we're not only red flag warnings, but also freeze warnings in effect across southern california. so the red flag warning in red.

this will expire later on this evening where we have the freeze warning this morning. some areas starting temperatures in the 20s. so while firefighters battle these flames, it is chilly across a big portion of socal this morning. here's a look at the fire risk. still have that critical fire risk in the red. but you're noticing we don't have that pink color today. that extreme fire risk, that highest risk. but still firefighters are watching where we do have the potential to find some of these fires could spread. but thankfully, it looks like the strongest winds throughout the morning and the afternoon are away from our two biggest fires, the palisades fire. in the eton fire, the winds are not terribly strong. it's to the west that will find some of those strongest winds this morning. but this afternoon and evening the winds really back off. once that red flag warning expires, the winds are much lighter and the humidity will be on the rise. so we're almost done. this red flag warning back here at home. it's another beautiful day on the way. chilly this morning with clear skies. but then this afternoon, calm winds, sunshine, mild weather,

he has pled guilty. investigators released these images yesterday. they say they showed 34 year old casey goonan, who admitted to using molotovan, cocktails in the arsons. these new pictures show the moment he set a university patrol car on fire last june. goonan is scheduled to be sentenced in april. >> a new bill just passed by congress to ban transgender athletes from girls and women's

sports. yesterday's vote is the latest move in a culture war that has played out from the campaign trail to the volleyball court. san jose state's volleyball team was one major target for anti-trans rhetoric, as republicans across the country campaigned for a ban. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains the stakes of this new bill. >> reporter house will be in order. on tuesday, the house of representatives voting to pass a republican led bill that would ban transgender athletes from women's and girls sports. if it becomes law, the bill would apply to all federally funded schools and would change title nine to recognize only the sex and athlete was assigned at birth. >> what should be an opportunity for young women to thrive and compete has been clouded by an agenda that prioritizes so-called inclusion over fairness. >> the topic of transgender athletes in sports has been a contentious issue in recet years. some, like tom temprano of equality california, worry the new bill could harm the health and well-being of transgender youth. >> it's, you know, disappointing

continuation by these far right extremists to continue to make political pawns out of students that just want to, you know, try hard and play alongside their teammates. >> temprano says the number of transgender athletes competing in school sports remains extremely small. he also believes americans are more concerned about other issues. >> voters again care about the economy. they care about housing. they care about health care. >> while the law isn't in effect yet, we were curious to see what the reaction was here in the bay area. at the bruce mahoney basketball doubleheader at chase center, some parents told us they see both sides of the argument. >> it's a really tough issue, and i think that there's going to be some conversations that need to be had all the way around. >> others, though, were divided in their opinions. >> obviously, the males have a big advantage for females over females. and i think, you know, i think just to keep it separate for every sport. yeah. for every sport. yeah. no matter the sport. >> for colleen crespo, she says

she tries to remain open minded on issues such as these. but when it comes to this bill, she believes the house made the right decision. >> it doesn't seem fair. it doesn't seem fair when men are playing with women and then they're winning, and then it's like the women then don't even have a chance anymore. >> the bill will next have to pass the senate, where its future remains more uncertain. in san francisco. tim jonze, abc seven news. >> an update this morning from the abc seven news i-team. alameda county has officially approved the oakland coliseum sale. i-team reporter dan noyes was listening in on the alameda county board of supervisors meeting yesterday. the board unanimously approved the sale and hopes to have final approval within 30 days. >> this is a great opportunity to give us a win. we've had so many circumstances in which people have not necessarily been positive towards us as a city, as a region, as a county, but this is an opportunity for us to deliver that. >> they describe this as an

fire danger for southern california as the region braces for more winds. 25 people are now confirmed dead. containment is growing on both the palisades and eaton fires. >> number two, san francisco mayor daniel lurie has introduced legislation to combat the fentanyl crisis. his office says it will unlock funding and speed up the city's process for partnering with nonprofits to provide services and address street conditions. he'll meet with city leaders to discuss that plan today. >> number three tonight, a town hall will be held to go over proposed changes to the oakland police departments pursuit policy. the current policy has been criticized by some, including governor newsom, for being too restrictive. the town hall starts at 630 at the east bay church of religious science on telegraph avenue. >> number four. later today, president biden will address the nation from the oval office for the last time. live coverage of his farewell starts at 5 p.m. right here on abc seven.

of waiting 11 days before revealing his ownership of the company, which allowed him to make the purchase at, quote, artificially low prices. now, the commission is requesting musk pay a civil penalty. in a statement, musk's attorney says the ceo has done nothing wrong. >> meta plans to cut 5% of its workforce, but it may not be considered layoffs. so according to cnn, the menlo park based company is getting rid of the people it considers its lowest performers and plans to backfill the positions later this year. in an internal memo, mark zuckerberg says he is, quote, decided to raise the bar on performance management. this is the latest round of changes coming to the social media company. last week, meta ended its diversity, equity and inclusion programs. the company also announced it is ending its third party fact checking programs. >> apple is standing by its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. the national center for public policy research recently told the company it plans to submit an anti ai

proposal at the annual shareholders meeting, which happens next month. in response, apple's board has asked its investors to reject such a proposal, saying its dei policies are foundational to how they do business. major companies, including meta and walmart, have recently rolled back their dei policies, partially due to pressure from legal and conservative groups. today, the u.s. supreme court is hearing arguments in a case that could affect access to sexuallyt explicit websites. at issue is a texas law designed to protect children that some say could deny freedoms to adults. the law requires porn sites to verify official documentation to confirm users are at least 18 years old. supporters of the law say without that requirement, it's too easy for kids to access explicit material. critics say it violates the first amendment because it would burden adult access to protected free speech. >> whenever the government is passing a law in the name of protecting kids, i think there are serious questions to be

minutes and antioch to concord 17 minutes. and looking live at our oakland 880 camera. here in the east bay, traffic is flowing freely in both directions of the nimitz. >> amanda reggie aqui at this hour? people in southern california on high alert as the region is facing another round of dangerous fire conditions, a particularly dangerous situation. >> red flag warning is in effect until 3 p.m. today, and we could see more intense winds before relief finally arrives. here's where things stand this morning. with the fires that have beenng. burning for just over a week now. yesterday, officials confirmed another death, bringing the total killed to 25. containment of the palisades fire is improving now up to 18%. it hasn't grown in the past day and remains at over 23,000 acres. firefighters are also making progress on the eaton fire. it is also stayed about the same size and containment is up to 35%. but the big concern this morning are those winds

through this afternoon. after that, conditions will improve. >> now by wednesday evening, wednesday night expect the critical conditions to diminish. and then for thursday into the weekend, we're actually get back to more normal weather pattern here for this part of the country. kind of a nice onshore sea breeze during the day, bringing cooler temperatures, higher humidity which will all help with the firefighting and fire control efforts. >> we are learning more about the victims and survivors of the fires, many with harrowing stories. and here's abc news reporter andrew dymburt. >> the two largest fires, the palisades and eaton fires, have destroyed more than 12,000 homes and businesses, killing at least 25 people. >> it was literally shooting like fireballs. it looked like a volcano. >> sierra calvin lost his sister in the eaton fire. he says they got separated while evacuating. >> that's where they found her. found her remains. and.

businesses step up for this effort. >> that's right amanda. businesses here in the bay area are offering their support to victims of the los angeles county wildfires by collecting donations. cameron's restaurant, pub and inn in half moon bay is one of those businesses. thb says it is happy to serve as a collection point and coordination center for people to drop off clothing, shoes and blankets. the items will be taken to san jose mineta international to be flown down south. >> we experienced this a few years back with the santa cruz fires, and our hearts just go out to these folks. oh my god, i pray for you all. our hearts are hurting in san francisco. >> manny's is holding a donation drive to help wildfire victims. the owner says the response has been overwhelming. he says volunteer drivers will take the items to wildfire shelters in southern california. >> as you can see all around me, my business is overflowing with donated goods. it's been really, really beautiful to see so many people come from all over the

>> during his campaign, san francisco's new mayor promised to tackle the fentanyl crisis as soon as he took office. yesterday, he made his first steps to o that, and today he starts the process of convincing other city leaders to get on board with the plan. abc seven news reporter lena howland live in san francisco this morning to explain this proposal. lena. >> well, reggie, the release of this ordinance comes right before mayor lori is expected to meet with a group of supervisor. and the city's public safety department heads to talk about the city's fentanyl crisis. later this morning, mayor lori's office says the ordinance will unlock funding and expedite hiring and contracting. it will also speed up the city's process for partnering with nonprofits to provide behavioral health services and address street conditions. it comes as no surprise, since the these were promises he made during his inauguration speech just one week ago, he said. passing this ordinance will allow the city to further surge resources and

makes his final preparations to take office. a meeting will be held at the white house today as part of the transition. some of trump's cabinet picks and national security staff are expected to meet with president joe biden's national security council. they will walk through the u.s. government response to various homeland security threats and scenarios. now, these types of meetings between incoming and outgoing administrations are typical, speaker of the house mike johnson says flags at the capitol will fly at full staff during monday's inauguration. then they will be lowered to half staff again to continue the 30 day mourning period honoring the death of former president jimmy carter. tech billionaires are on trump's vip list for the inauguration. mark zuckerberg, elon musk and jeff bezos will all have front row seats. sources tell abc news they will be seated on the platform with trump's cabinet picks and other elected officials. trump has picked musk to lead a government efficiency department in his

and the accuweather forecast. we're looking at live doppler seven along with satellite. first, this ridge of high pressure across northern california has been very persistent this month. that is why we've been underneath this dry pattern. and we continue that dry pattern for the foreseeable future. this area of low pressure responsible for the gusty winds across southern california today. this will slowly push off to the east over the next 36 hours, easing those winds. but still, a red flag warning is currently in effect for good reason. we're seeing those winds gusting 30 to 45mph rt now in some of our highest peaks across southern california. it's not only the red flag warning, but we are in the middle of winter. so we also have freeze warnings across southern california. so as these firefighters are fighting these fires, they're doing so with temperatures in the 20s and in the 30s. this morning, that red flag warning will expire at 6 p.m. this evening. now the fire risk today is critical. that's the red shading you see on your screen. but you're noticing we don't have that pink purple color, that extreme fire risk that

living in san francisco's fillmore district are showing their outrage over the upcoming closure of the neighborhood safeway. it hasn't even been shut down yet, and the store is already running out of food. last week, the store held a 50% off sale and people lined up to get in. now, one supervisor says the store is completely out of produce and meat. protesters are demanding the board of supervisors make sure the neighborhood has access to a

grocery store. >> well, it's not just a grocery store. it's a full fledged grocery store. you have a deli. you have a meat market. you have a bakery, uh- you have a pharmacy. it just takes a lot from just this being the only grocery store in full fledged grocery store in the neighborhood, citing concerns about safety and theft, the store plans to close on february 7th. >> parking or parklets? that's the debate that has business owners in palo alto at odds with each other. this week, the city agreed to some future restrictions. like many cities, parklets became popular in palo alto during the pandemic. in the years since, the city updated their policies, like changing how large they can be. restaurant owners say they've built and rebuilt their parklets to be up to code, and they now take up less visual space than a parked car. but other business owners say they're still taking up too much parking and impacting window shopping. >> i work with my neighbors. i love my neighbors. i've supported them through the

dogs were led from the busses, some needing a little more coaxing to their new temporary home. joy bound animal rescue in walnut creek. because of the fires, they were brought from a shelter in the l.a. area. it must be very gratifying to you and all of you here at troy, bound to be able to do this. >> it is incredibly gratifying. at the end of the day, we understand the need for help. as fellow californians. we're no strangers to wildfires here. >> hey, take a look at rico here. one of 31 dogs and one cat brought up by joy bound in walnut creek last night from la. now, what's interesting is these are not animals that were actually displaced by the fires. those dogs need to stay down south so they can be reunited with their owners. these are all dogs that were in other shelters in la. they took them up here to make room for the dogs displaced by the fires. the goal now. find good homes for these animals as fast as possible, so joy bound can continue to help the people and pets of l.a. and there's a

i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe.
