i'm not happy with the way that pg&e handled the wildfires. yeah. yeah. i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. just like yesterday. we have that cold morning. but the payoff this afternoon is that temperatures a few degrees warmer than yesterday. here's future weather by noon. we're already into the upper 50s. lower 60s in some spots with lots of sunshine. and then later on this afternoon, those temperatures about five, six, seven degrees above average for this time of the year. so another sunny day. our dry pattern continues. a high of 63 in oakland today, 67 in san jose, 62. in the city, 65 in santa rosa, santa cruz, up to 65 degrees with sunny skies along the coast. let's check in with gloria. see how the commute is going on this wednesday. >> good morning. definitely getting busier out there on the roads. we're getting a live look at our bay bridge toll plaza camera, and you can see it's getting pretty crowded out here. metering lights flipped on about 30 minutes ago and you will see some delays if you're driving through that area. right now. traffic is backed up to the middle of the parking lot, and the time right now it will take you to get from highway four to san francisco is 50 minutes. we do have a commuter alert for you

if you take ace. we have some delays to tell you about. so ace reports that train one is delayed 41 minutes between tracy amtrak station and livermore amtrak station. that's because of some mechanical problems. and ace train three is holding at cp six right now. now oakland airport line, we have that usual about 20 minute delay that we've been seeing the last few days. amanda. reggie. >> thanks, gloria. one week ago, we watched this unfold live right here on abc. seven mornings. entire communities devoured by huge flames that were sweeping across portions of l.a. county. >> and we now know at least 25 people have died. this morning, the firestorm is gone, but millions of people are still on high alert. >> dangerous winds are in the forecast for southern california into this afternoon, and the potential for more fire is very high right now. these are the fires keeping thousands of firefighters busy this morning. the palisades and the eton, the hurst as well. and the auto fires. none of the fires have grown in the past 24 hours.

that's the promising news. crews have made good progress increasing containment lines ahead of the return of the winds. >> as containment grows, people are starting to return to what is left of their homes. many are sorting through the ash and rubble, trying to find anything that may have survived. it's an experience that comes with highs and lows. >> that's it, that's it, that's it, that's it. oh my god. oh my god. oh my god. >> oh my god. oh my god. god. oh my what. >> oh my gosh. >> we found, we found. >> as you can see, that couple elated to find a wedding ring. the homeowner, a local firefighter who left it when he went to work. but along with that joy you just saw, there are so many irreplaceable items. like the realization that the

one thing their sons hoped to find a basketball hoop wasn't there. the couple right now has no plans for taking the kids to see the property, and that is understandable as state and local leaders are focusing on relief and recovery efforts in la, politics are starting to come into play. >> this morning, another effort to recall governor newsom is underway. organizers say they plan to file the papers in the next two weeks for what they are calling, quote, a series of catastrophic failures before the fires. the governor has also faced attacks from president elect donald trump only hours after the fire started. this week, republicans in congress suggested federal assistance for california should come with conditions. east bay congressman eric swalwell says this is not what we should be focused on right now. >> people in the area are still in evacuation zones and are not in their homes. i don't think that's what they want right now. they just they want their government to do what government is supposed to do, which is respond to a crisis and take

care of them. >> an adviser for the governor tells abc seven news he is, quote, 100% focused on the fire, ongoing rescue efforts and the recovery process, not politics. >> the canadian firefighting plane, known as the super scooper, is back in the air over l.a. county a week after it got damaged when a drone hit it. the plane is quite a sight. when it's put into service. it can drop 1500 gallons of water at a time on a fire. despite that impressive capability, the state has been leasing two of these for 90 day periods for the last three decades, according to l.a. county fire. and some people are wondering, why don't they just buy one of these aircraft? now, firefighting experts say it comes down to the state's specific needs and limitations. >> in our helicopters, they're able to quickly access water and drop it into an area that they can access that the aircraft the planes, may not be able to. >> and there are also environmental impacts. the super scoopers use salt water from the

ocean that can be corrosive, and salt can make it harder for plants to grow. after a fire, the state's air tankers drop fire retardant mixed with water, and that can act as a fertilizer. we are staying on top of all the developments coming out of the wildfires in l.a. county. get updates as they happen at abc seven news.com and the abc seven bay area app. >> san francisco mayor daniel lurie taking bold action during his first week as leader of the city. yesterday, the mayor sent the board of supervisors his first proposed law to combat the fentanyl crisis. today, the work begins to get his proposal passed. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in san francisco. with the details of this ambitious plan. lena. >> well, amanda, yesterday, mayor mayor lurie introduced the fentanyl state of emergency ordinance to the board of supervisors. it's something he's already promised to do on day one during his inauguration speech just last week. mayor lurie's office says the ordinance will unlock funding and expedite hiring and

contracting. it will also speed up the city's process for partnering with nonprofits to provide behavioral health services and address street conditions. lurie said in his inauguration speech that he wants to send a clear message to the city and the country that you do not come to san francisco to deal drugs or do drugs on our streets, and if you do, you will be held accountable. >> the fentanyl crisis isn't a 9 to 5 operation. it doesn't take breaks and neither will we. that's why i'm introducing a package of fentanyl. state of emergency ordinances. this will allow us to further surge resources and bypass the bureaucratic hurdles. standing in the way of tackling this crisis. i look forward to working with the incoming board of supervisors for their quick approval. >> the board still has to approve the ordinance before anything moves forward. later this morning, mayor lurie will join a group of supervisors and

>> and in the afternoon it will be a couple of degrees warmer compared to yesterday as well. across california it is dry. today it is mild. it is sunny. southern california still dealing with those strong santa ana winds this morning. so we'll zoom in to southern california. you're looking at current wind speeds right now. we're really anywhere from 25 to near 50mph in our hills currently. but those winds are not reaching the valley floor. that was a different story last week. burbank last week had those winds gusting upwards of 80mph. the winds are a lot lighter in the valley floor, so this is more of a typical santa ana wind event. we're seeing those strong winds and our typical corridors this morning. that red flag warning continues through 6 p.m. this evening. not only red flag warnings, but we are in the middle of winter. so freeze warnings are also in effect across parts of southern california. so those firefighters battling these flames in some chilly conditions. here's a look at the winds this morning. they stay elevated this evening. once that red flag warning expires the winds really back off. so we have about 12 more hours of these gusty winds. and then

in a case that could affect access to sexually explicit websites. at issue a texas law designed to protect children that some say could deny freedom to adults. that law requires porn sites to verify official documentation to confirm users are at least 18 years old. supporters of the law say without that requirement, it's too easy for kids to access explicit material. critics say it violates the first amendment because it would burden adult access to protected free speech. >> whenever the government is passing a law in the name of protecting kids. i think there are serious questions to be asked about whether what it's really doing is saying, this speech is bad for everyone. >> the justices hear arguments on this case today, and their ruling is expected by summer. there are new accusations about so-called pharmaceutical middlemen driving up the cost of prescription drugs by more than 1,000% in some cases. a new report from the ftc claims companies known as pharmacy

benefit managers or pbms, profited by billions of dollars by raising the prices of specialty drugs to treat cancer, hiv and other conditions. the report claims between 2017 and 2022, pbms, caremark rx, express scripts and optum rx generated more than $7 billion in revenue. pbms only exist in the us and negotiate prices with insurers, drug makers and pharmacies. >> what impact are you seeing this have on consumers? >> the individual patient does not directly benefit from those negotiations, and that's one of the reasons why drugs are often unaffordable, even for americans who have full insurance. >> the pharmaceutical care management association, which represents pbms, calls the ftc report baseless and without substantiating evidence. pbms have been under scrutiny in congress, but one recent proposal aimed at improving accountability failed to

advance. the house passed a new bill banning transgender athletes from girls and women's sports. it's the latest move in a cultural war that's played out from the campaign trail to the volleyball court. san jose state's volleyball team was one major target for anti-trans rhetoric, as republicans across the country campaigned for a ban. both federal leaders and lgbtq activists were vocal about this new bill. >> what should be an opportunity for young women to thrive and compete has been clouded by an agenda that prioritizes so-called inclusion over fairness. >> it's, you know, disappointing continuation by these far right extremists to continue to make political pawns out of students that just want to, you know, try hard and play alongside their teammates. >> if the bill becomes law, it would apply to all federally funded schools. it would also change title nine to recognize only the sex and athlete was assigned at birth. >> an update this morning from the abc7 news i-team. alameda

county has officially approved the oakland coliseum sale. the alameda county board of supervisors unanimously approved the sale at yesterday's meeting, and hope to find or to have final approval within 30 days. >> this is a great opportunity to give us a win. we've had so many circumstances in which people have not necessarily been positive towards us as a city, as a region, as a county, but this is an opportunity for us to deliver that. >> so they describe this as an historic opportunity with two results. the coliseum complex will finally be under control of a sole owner. that's the african american sports and entertainment group. and the county will be out of the sports and entertainment business. >> today marks 50 years since space mountain first debuted at walt disney world. yes, even though disneyland is older, our space mountain came second. according to the disney parks blog, walt disney was inspired by the matterhorn mountain in switzerland. he apparently sent a postcard back to his staff

saying, build this. and they did. so they built that at disneyland. and then he had the idea for an interstellar voyage. and that is how space mountain eventually came about. so two years after it opened at disney world, the ride opened at disneyland. there are limited time versions of the attraction, including hyperspace mountain. that's a star wars adventure through the galaxy. it will return to disneyland march 28th through may 11th. disney is the parent company of abc seven. now, who here besides me has been on both versions? >> no. just one. >> yeah, i think i have two. yeah. >> wow. >> and yeah, please agree with me. the disneyland version is far superior. >> i'm kind of partial to disneyland just because i grew up in southern california and i grew up going there, and i love space mountain. that's probably one of my favorite rides. >> it's way better at disneyland. >> yeah, it was in the 90s when i went to disney world, so my memories kind of. it's a little fuzzy, but i'm going to go with you, okay? you know that the one in southern california. >> but talk about that power build this.

diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. the national center for public policy research recently told the company it plans to submit an anti die proposal at the annual shareholders meeting next month. in response, apple's board has asked its investors to reject such a proposal, saying its dei policies are foundational to how they do business. major companies, including meta and walmart, have recently rolled back their dei policies due to pressure from legal and conservative groups. baseball season is just around the corner, and the giants released their promotional schedule yesterday, which includes a steph curry bobblehead. you see it here. it will be handed out on july 26th, a couple weeks earlier, there's a barry bonds bobblehead that will be handed out. there will also be a jersey

southern california are on high alert as the region is facing another round of dangerous fire conditions and a particularly dangerous situation. >> red flag warning is in effect until 3 p.m. today. we could see more intense winds before relief finally arrives. here's where things stand this morning. with the fires that have been burning for just over a week now. yesterday, officials confirmed another death, bringing the total killed to 25. containment of the palisades fire is improving now up to 18%. it hasn't grown in the past day and remains at over 23,000 acres. firefighters are also making progress on the eaton fire. it is also stayed about the same size and containment is up to 35%. but the big concern this morning are those winds through this afternoon. after that, though, conditions are expected to improve now by wednesday evening. >> wednesday night i expect the critical conditions to diminish. and then for thursday into the weekend, we're actually get back to more normal weather pattern here for this part of the

country. kind of a nice onshore sea breeze during the day, bringing cooler temperatures, higher humidity which will all help with the firefighting and fire control efforts as residents make their way back to what's left of their homes, many are sorting through the rubble, trying to salvage what survived the fire. >> officials are warning people to be careful, though, of inhaling ash and smoke as they return. donations are pouring in all across the bay area for wildfire relief. and gloria, we're seeing multiple local businesses step up for this effort. >> we are. amanda. businesses here in the bay area are offering their support to victims of the los angeles county wildfires by collecting donations, and cameron's restaurant, pub and inn in half moon bay is one of those businesses. the pub says it's happy to serve as a collection point and coordination center for people to drop off clothing, shoes and blankets. the items will be taken to san jose mineta international to be flown down south. >> we experienced this a few years back with the santa cruz fires, and our hearts just go

out to these folks. oh my god, i pray for you all. our hearts are hurting in san francisco. >> manny's is holding a donation drive to help wildfire victims. the owner says the response has been overwhelming. he says volunteer drivers will take the items to wildfire shelters in southern california. >> as you can see all around me, my business is overflowing with donated goods. it's been really, really beautiful to see so many people come from all over the city to drop off toiletries and canned goods and toys. >> they are accepting toys, nonperishable food, hygiene products, kids clothes and also baby products. donations can be dropped off at manny's through friday and. revenue is also joining in. and you could see just how generous the community is by seeing all of the piles of bags that they've gotten. organizers tell us that they are overwhelmed by the response. so far, shores is asking for

to talk about the city's fentanyl crisis. later this morning, mayor lori's office says the ordinance will unlock funding and expedite hiring and contracting. it will also speed up the city's process for partnering with nonprofits to provide behavioral health services and address street conditions. it comes as no surprise, since these were promises he made during his inauguration speech just one week ago, he said passing this ordinance will allow the city to further surge resources and bypass the bureaucratic hurdles that have been standing in the way of tackling this crisis. >> it's time to redefine how politics works in our city. when we stand united, we send a clear message to the city and the country that you do not come to san francisco to deal drugs or do drugs on our streets. and if you do, you will be held accountable. >> later this morning, mayor lori is holding a private

sisig will open its doors just in time for the nba all star weekend. first, here's drew. >> right on. all right. 641 this morning, we'll take you to southern california. we continue to track that red flag warning. it is with us for the next 12 hours. so we're almost done with this red flag warning. but still, winds are elevated and humidity is low this morning. here's a look at current wind speeds. you can see some of our higher peaks, anywhere from 35 to more than 50 mile per hour winds right now. but unlike last week when these fires broke out last week, the winds were area wide. burbank was gusting over 80mph. so you notice this morning those winds are not reaching the valley floor. they're staying in those typical santa ana wind corridors this morning. but still the fire risk is critical. that's the red shading you see on your screen across much of southern california. what you don't notice is this pink, purplish color that we had yesterday, that extreme fire risk. so the fire risk is a little lower today. but still those winds are active this morning. the winds remain active throughout the

pharmacy. it just takes a lot from just this being the only grocery store in full fledged grocery store in the neighborhood. >> citing concerns about safety and theft, the store plans to close on february 7th. >> this is a story we're going to be following for weeks. the city of santa cruz estimates that it could cost $18 million to repair that portion of the wharf that collapsed right before christmas. so far, the city has spent nearly $500,000 on the recovery effort, most of it on cleaning up debris. it's estimated businesses have lost around $800,000 in sales after a wet december. it's been an exceptionally dry and warm january, and that could disrupt the water supply for the state this year. right now, california reservoirs are at 120% of normal. however, snowpack is at 41% and groundwater supplies are at just 31% compared to normal. experts are concerned the state won't get enough rain to boost supplies to last through the

along the coast overnight. tonight will repeat the pattern. we have some chilly temperatures, clear skies, 30s and 40s as we go into your thursday. now, looking at the extended outlook, we would love to see a rainbow of colors on this map indicating we have storms on the horizon, but this is going through the next ten days. if you mark that on your calendar, that would be the 25th of january and there's not a single drop of rain in the forecast. so those heavy rains we saw earlier this season that brought us above average in many cities will probably chip away at some of those numbers in the water year. we'll keep you updated on that. let's talk winds on monday. pretty late in the morning. they ramp up and peak in the afternoon. so what we're watching for is these offshore winds could gust over 40mph at times on monday. we'll fine tune these details as we get closer, but just keep in the back of your mind that monday will likely be a gusty afternoon. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. chilly this morning, mild in the afternoon. we'll repeat that tomorrow. fog does return here friday morning along the coast, but it's gone over the weekend
