america on this wednesday morning. another journey to the moon is happening right now so we called in our space man. no, not you. >> michael: that's the man. >> robin: he is excited, as are you, about this mission. gio is gonna tell us more just ahead. >> michael: he is the perfect person for that. all this morning, the new information about what may be driving higher costs for prescription medications. >> george: we begin with the fire emergency in los angeles. the most severe wind warning is in effect again this morning threatening to start new fires, spread existing ones. this new danger comes as we also learn new information about what may have sparked the palisades fire. chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. the next few hours here are going to be absolutely critical. this is the second driest season on record. low humidity today. the winds will come howling down this canyon. one of the things we've been seeing, firefighters have been positioned up and down streets

like this. you can see them tucked into all of these neighborhoods. i'll have my camera man point right there to show you some of them. that's because they understand even those small embers with this wind can be stoked into absolute infernos. this morning, for the second straight day, millions facing an extreme fire risk in southern california. the next 12 hours critical. >> everybody here urges you to remain alert, as danger has not yet passed. >> reporter: fire crews scrambling to mop up many remaining hot spots fearing powerful santa ana winds and dry conditions could rekindle month monstrous eaton and palisades fire. the palisades fire 18% contained as new clues emerge about how it may have started. abc news learned the atf, federal agency charged with investigating arson and explosions, is zeroing in on the palisades highland area. >> the foot of the fire started real close to where the last fire was on new year's eve. >> reporter: some residents pointing to this fire first

reported on the hillside just after midnight on new year's day. >> lafd had sent helicopters to put that out. they were there for hours circling overhead. we assumed the fire was out. for the next several nights there were fire work against going off in various areas in the hills. >> reporter: by 3:38 the fire stopped. and by 4:46 fully contained. fire officials say ash bins or tree roots can smolder for days unseen. >> we were right behind it! >> reporter: at 10:30 a.m. tuesday january 7th, the palisades fire was reported. these side by side satellite images seem to show that fire starting at nearly the same spot as the fire the week before. we witnessed the fire fighting efforts at that spot as the palisades fire began to spread. just in the last couple of seconds since we've been here, this fire threatened this hill we're on. the entire basin here is engulfed in flames. fema on the ground in l.a.

already receiving 40,000 aid applications. 84-year-old susan said she watched the palisades fire approach her home from her kitchen window. before fighting the fire with her 86-year-old husband winston, saving their home. >> i wasn't sure where winston was. couldn't contact him. but it turns out he was at the south end of the house doing the same thing. >> reporter: the palisades fire and eaton fire claimed the lives of 25 people. the survivors are still reeling. >> it was literally shooting like fire balls. it looked like a volcano. >> reporter: zaire calvin remembers the eaton fire surging toward the place he's called home for 47 years. getting your mother? >> getting my mother, we're going. i go to the left and car is still there. >> reporter: he says he thought his sister had managed to leave already. the next day, they located her.

>> in the morning, sister's dead. there's no real understanding. there's no understanding. there's no way to even take it in. >> reporter: the family hit hard, but not giving up on their community. >> everyone is fighting. everyone is literally just asking, leaning on each other to say, what's next? what's the best thing to do? >> reporter: zaire telling me he is absolutely committed to rebuilding that community and he's not gonna quit until it's done. there is a concern by authorities. we have seen evacuation orders, fire, disaster. emergency alerts sent out on people's mobile phones. authorities are imploring people to continue heeding those warnings. they say lives are still at stake here. robin? >> michael: thank you so much, matt. now the deep freeze settling

into the midwest and northeast. many are waking up to wind chills below 0. alex perez is along icy lake michigan in chicago. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. yeah, this is the kind of cold that is very dangerous and very quickly. the feel-like temperature here in chicago is about 6 below zero. now, want to give you an idea of how cold that is. we're here near lake michigan. you can see parts of the water frozen over. if you look in the distance, you can see the ice is continuing to build. in fact much of the eastern half of the country is dealing with these bitterly cold temperatures. it is creating problems in some spots. this was the scene in south bend, indiana, after slick roads there led to a multicar pileup. thankfully, only nonlife threatening injuries were reported. robin? >> robin: all right, alex. thank you. hope you warm up really soon. now to ginger who's tracking the forecast on both coasts for us. good morning, ginge.

>> ginger: i really like how matt pointed out that sometimes you don't see flame, but those smoldering piles. when we were out there covering, we saw certain hot spots flame up. they come around, put it out. it flames up again. it takes a lot of effort and rounds. that's why they're concerned about winds. if you get a wind of 45 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour even on an existing smolder that can throw an ember and s fire. most is north and west of los angeles and the two main fires. the biggest area that are at extreme risk today until 3:00 p.m., that's the particularly dangerous situation red flag warning, goes through the san fernando valley and over toward ventura along the 101, the 405. we're watching that closely. some of the gusts we time out here, this is 2 p.m. today, filmore's at 40. watch what happens by tomorrow. things really start to settle down. wind speeds are near calm for santa clarita by friday. you know the other best part? we're gonna get on shore flow by friday. that means humidity will bump up. talking 60%. that's going to help so much. we may even see a sprinkle by

the end of the week in southern california. let's talk about the cold. because, yes, he was there. subzero wind chills in chicago. but in that extreme cold warning right in appalachian, so much colder, like 22 below. next week even colder than that, all the way to the gulf coast. george? >> george: we are glad that relief is coming for southern california. thank you, ginger. now confirmation hearing for president-elect trump's pick for defense secretary. pete hegseth was grilled by democrats. republicans appear united in supporting him. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. just weeks ago it appeared pete hegseth had a tough confirmation battle ahead. after that four-hour contentious hearing, republicans are lining up to make it clear they support his nomination despite the allegations against him. this morning republicans seem mostly united around donald trump's embattled pick to lead the pentagon, pete hegseth, after a contentious and at times combative confirmation hearing. >> excuse me, mr. hegseth.

would you stop? would you stop? >> reporter: the former fox news host defending himself against allegations of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement arguing he had been a victim of a smear campaign and that he has changed. >> i'm not a perfect person but redemption is real. god forged me in ways that i know i'm prepared for. >> reporter: right off the bat, democrats arguing the army veteran, with no leadership experience, is not qualified. >> how can we ask people to perform at the highest standard while you are asking us to lower the standard simply because your buddy with our president elect. >> reporter: democrats questioning his ability to lead the pentagon with its $850 billion budget. and more than 3 million employees. especially after reports that he mismanaged two veteran political groups he led, which hegseth denies.

but hegseth winning over one key senate republican joni ernst of iowa, the first female combat veteran in the senate. >> as secretary of defense, will you support women continuing to have the opportunity to serve in combat roles? >> yes, women will have access to ground combat roles, combat roles, given the standards remain high. and we'll have a review to ensure the standards have not been eroded. >> reporter: ernst now says she will support him. democrats pouncing. last year hegseth said flat out women should not be allowed to serve in combat roles. >> i just want to know what changed in the 32 days that the song you sang is not the song you come in here today to sing? >> senator, the concerns i have are the concerns many have had especially in ground combat units. in pursuit of certain percentages or quotas, standards have been changed. >> reporter: a senior defense department official telling abc news the standards for military service have not been lowered and there are no quotas for women or minorities. the policy strictly merit based. hegseth also questioned about an accusation he sexually assaulted

a woman in 2017 which he denied claiming the encounter was consensual. >> senator, i was falsely charged. fully investigated and completely cleared. >> so you think you are completely cleared because you committed no crime. that's your definition of cleared? you had just fathered a child two months before by a woman that was not your wife. >> reporter: republicans rallying behind him. >> he will inject a new warrior ethos into the pentagon a spirit that can cascade from the top down. >> reporter: hegseth comes out of that hearing stronger with that support from that key republican senator joni ernst. it is now another marathon day of confirmation hearings up on capitol hill. up next you have former senator marco rubio, who is trump's pick for secretary of state. then pam bondi, for attorney general, taking some tough questions about how she plans to carry out trump's vision, including his pledge to pardon the rioters

who attacked the capitol on january 6th, michael. >> michael: now overseas where there is growing hope that a cease fire deal between israel and hamas may be imminent. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is tracking the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, michael. abc news learning that israel and hamas have agreed on the core elements of a cease fire deal and hamas indicated it is going to respond positively. israeli government officials telling us they hope to announce something soon. president biden's team as well as the incoming trump administration both involved in these negotiations. they have been taking place in qatar. a reminder that the key element of phase one includes a six week cease fire, the release of 33 hostages and hundreds of palestinian prisoners. robin? >> robin: ian, thank you. now the new federal lawsuit that accuses capital one of deliberately underpaying interest to millions of customers. our chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is here.

got those details? good morning. >> rebecca: absolutely. good morning, guys. nice to see you. you probably know their ad campaign that ends with the question, what's in your wallet? well, the government says millions of capital one customers should have a lot more in their wallets. the consumer federal protection bureau alleges capital one cheated its customers out of $2 billion in interest by creating two nearly identically named savings accounts. 360 savings and 360 performance savings. the difference, that performance savings account offered interest rates 14 times higher than the other one. the government accuses capital one of misleading customers about the higher interest performance account and even banning employees from telling existing customers about it so they could have switched and made more interest. they didn't tell them, according to the government. >> robin: and according to the government they also, capital one, misled consumers, customers, about having one of the highest interest rates. >> rebecca: yes. the advertising is what the

government is focusing on. the government alleges capital one advertised that 360 savings account as having the best and highest interest rate. mean time, the bank actually froze the rate on those accounts. capital one is vigorously denying the allegations. they say the government is following a recent pattern of filing 11th hour lawsuits ahead of a change in administration. the bank also said it marketed the 360 performance savings product widely, including on national television. the feds are requesting a jury trial here. capital one says it will vigorously defend itself. >> robin: lot of people will be looking at their statements very closely. >> rebecca: absolutely, yes. thanks, robin. >> robin: thank you. >> michael: going to go now to the double mission to the moon. overnight the falcon 9 rocket lifted off. our space guy, gio benitez, is tracking it and tracking what else is going to be launched in 2025. >> gio: you're a space guy, too. let's go for two. double moon shot. space x rocket took off from

kennedy space center around 1 a.m. carrying two lunar landers. they shared a ride to save money but separated about an hour later taking separate routes to the moon. it should take a couple of months for folks to get there. the tokyo placed i space, moon landing attempt number two. if successful, its rover will conduct experiments including some designed to find food and water sources for future human moon walkers. american company firefly sent its blue ghost lunar lander to help better understand the moon's environment. it's set to reach the lunar surface there in march. these missions will help get astronauts back to the moon. the whole goal is to eventually use the moon as a home base for travel across the universe. in that search for food and water, will reeve made a joke, at least they already have some astronaut ice cream. just a few hours ago coco goff and much more on the tennis stars winning down under coming up with lara in pop news. >> george: following a lot of head lines. next 12 hours critical for southern california. for the second straight day millions face an extreme fire risk. the palisades fire is now 18% contained. president biden will give a primetime farewell address from the oval office tonight. he will reflect on 50 plus years as a public official. >> michael: wnba star caitlin clark alleged stalker appeared in court yesterday on felony charges. michael lewis was reprimanded for repeatedly disrupting the proceedings including saying guilty as charged. his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on lewis' behalf. he could face six years in prison. take a look at this dramatic double rescue on the ice. a man fell through the ice on a lake in massachusetts trying to save his dog tommy. the fire department geared up in

cold weather survival suits to rescue him. the man was in freezing waters 12 to 15 minutes. they slowly got him over the ice, as you see there, and back to shore. but tommy little further out in the lake where the ice is thinner. finally a firefighter was able to get to tommy and slowly bring him back to shore as well. both tommy and his owner are now fine thanks to those daring heroes. that is fantastic to see. we got a lot more ahead, including the apps many are checking out in case a tik tok ban goes into effect. that is coming up. now we're gonna turn to the search for suspects after a home invasion in georgia. two men dressed as amazon workers forced their way into a man's home and left him beaten. trevor ault is here with the story. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. authorities are really on alert about this. police in savannah say these are not amazon workers. you could easily be fooled by it. this was just a way of getting inside the home, getting the man to come to the door so they could violently break in and demand money. >> help!

help! >> reporter: this morning police on the hunt for these two men allegedly dressed as amazon workers, package in hand, breaking into this home leaving the man inside beaten and bloody. this surveillance footage captured next door. according to the police report the suspects asked the 66-year-old victim where the money was before striking him in the head with what may have been a sledge hammer. soon after the men seen running away as the victim cries out. >> help! >> reporter: this isn't the first incident like this. last year two men posing as utility workers with vests and fake id badges allegedly breaking into this home in michigan. >> we're checking for gas leak. >> reporter: they're accused of killing 72-year-old hussein murray tying up his wife with duct tape. >> you don't have to answer the door if you don't feel safe. if it is a package that requires a signature, you can make

arraignments to pick up that package at a distribution facility later on and sign at that point. just taking some of those common sense things that if you don't feel safe or if something doesn't feel right, don't answer the door. >> the victim in the georgia case has been released from the hospital but was treated for several injuries. he received 14 staples in his head. we do know that amazon delivery drivers rarely knock on the door or ask for a signature unless it's been prearranged. >> robin: you're right about that, trevor. thank you. now our abc news exclusive with the mother of the navy seal recruit who died after intense hell week training three years ago. she is demanding accountability for her son's death after the navy ended its investigation without holding public hearings and she said with little explanation. will reeve sat down with her. good morning, will. >> will: good morning, robin. this is the latest twist in a story we've been following for nearly three year. regina mullen was expecting a hearing for the two men she claims are responsible for her son's death but got a phone call just before christmas telling

her the hearing would not be happening and mullen said all along she's wanted consequences and wanted accountability. right now she says she can't get any answers. this morning a mother's anger and demand for accountability. >> we're just trying to be a hero and protect people. to have it done by his own country, by his own military. >> reporter: regina mullen's 24-year-old son kyle died in february 2022 after completing navy seal hell week training. the grieving mother revealing to gma the cases against the men she blames for her son's death were dismissed by the navy. and she says she hasn't been told why. who cancelled these hearings? >> i don't know. they didn't tell me. >> reporter: nearly three years ago kyle mullen had just successfully endured the 120 hour week of brutal training that pushes seal candidates to their physical and mental limits. >> i got a text that said hell week secured. i called him.

he answered. he was out of breath. said, hey, mom, i did it. hell week secured. i said, first i'm like, all happy. then i'm like, are you all right? are you in a hospital? you don't sound good. all he said is, mom, i love you, don't worry about me. >> reporter: hours later kyle died from bacterial pneumonia. the final medical check showing swollen legs that required him to be sent back to his barracks in a wheelchair with abnormalities in his lungs and severe trouble breathing. a navy investigation cited failures across multiple systems that led to a number of candidates being at a higher risk of serious injury with inconsistent medical monitoring and lack of training among commanding officers, and an at all cost mindset among the candidates. >> you have failed leadership under a command that killed a man unnecessarily and injured many. i think it's pretty reasonable to ask for accountability. >> reporter: the investigation also looked into allegations of the use of performance enhancing drugs among seal candidates. authorities say they found a bottle labeled as human growth

hormone in mullen's car, but investigators determined mullen died in the line of duty and not due to his own misconduct. regina mullen said they did not test for steroid use. >> she said they didn't test for it because it was irrelevant for the cause of death. right from the medical examiner, the navy medical examiner. >> reporter: mullen insists captain brad veer who was in charge of her son's training class and dr. eric amy are responsible. now with the case dismissed, regina says questions remain about the quality of her son's medical care and that she's not been provided with answers. >> the navy's not giving me what i'm asking for. medical treatment of kyle's care. they're not providing it. why won't they provide it? >> we're trying to figure out what they're hiding. simple as that. >> i want the board of inquiry to be reinstated is what i want so we can go public. >> reporter: a lawyer releasing a statement to abc news saying this case was badly mishandled from the beginning. when we were noticed for the board of inquiry, it became very clear a comprehensive

investigation had never been done and the deciding officer hadn't had access to all the evidence. through the discovery process, the navy was forced to gather all the relevant evidence which made continuing the case unsustainable. an attorney for dr. rainee telling abc news we invested a substantial amount of time investigating the case with the assistance of top medical experts. the overwhelming evidence said the doctor met the standard of care. the navy declined to comment citing privacy issue. from a legal standpoint, how abnormal is this timeline and this process in general? >> cases sometimes take a long time. that can be frustrating. the problem in this case is that when we have a dismissal, we don't have a basis for it. secondly, when we're doing our investigation, and we can't find documents, we have to question where the documents are? was there ever treatment? if there was treatment, why didn't it follow the military's

we've seen warnings, declaration, disaster. they hope people continue to heed the warnings because lives are still at stake here, robin. >> robin: i'm sure that is a big concern. thank you so much, matt. now the rising prices at the pharmacy and what's behind it. i told you rebecca jarvis was going to be back. she's got the latest for us. good morning again, rebecca. >> rebecca: nice to see you again, robin. these prices at the pharmacy can weigh on families. we all know how expensive prescription medications can be. this morning new information about a factor that is driving up the cost. a stunning new report from the federal trade commission finding that pharmacy benefit managers, or pbm's, raked in billions by marking up prices on specialty drugs used to treat cancer, hiv, ms and other diseases. these pbm's serve as middle men negotiating prices between drug makers, insurance companies and pharmacies. they're supposed to help keep drug costs lower. the ftc said between 2017 and

2022, the three largest pbm's, cvs health's caremark, cigna's express scripts made $7.23 billion by marking up drugs. by hundreds or even thousands of a percent. the pharmaceutical care management association which represents pbm's calls the report baseless and without substance and substantiating evidence. patient advocates say more transparency is need, and efforts to overhaul the industry will likely continue under the next administration. michael, here's a staggering statistic. over the last ten years drug costs up more than 40%. it's something we have to think about for families, michael. >> michael: something that needs to be managed. seems to be so excessive. thank you so much for that. we're going to turn now a new report that finds even moderate alcohol drinking -- why are you looking at me like that, robin? even moderate alcohol drinking can have an adverse impact on your health. eva pilgrim is here with the details of this popular study.

red note is also a chinese owned app launched as an alternative to instagram. when you try to download it terms and condition and name are still in mandarin. tik tok is also pushing its sister app called lenon8. it is more like pinterest. that is still owned by the same chinese company byte dance. >> michael: the alternatives are also owned by chinese companies. couldn't they be banned also? >> and they could. lemon8 could be banned under that same law that would ban tik tok. the point of this law was to try to get users -- byte dance, the parent company to get tik tok away from that. there are u.s. based apps that could try to fill this void. instagram, you tube shorts and snapchat. they're not really just after tik tok's 100 million plus users. they are chasing the billions of dollars in advertising revenue that are on tik tok too. >> michael: there's speculation about a u.s. buyer for tik tok. what would that look like?

>> byte dance has insisted that it will not sell tik tok with that algorithm. the algorithm really is the secret sauce of tik tok. at this point no other company has been able to replicate that technology. but there are some buyers like shark tank's kevin o learry elon musk. it seems that they are interested in buying it without the algorithm. that would make it a lot more affordable. but we do not know what the tik tok app would look like without the algorithm, if it would work at all, if it would work the same way and if it would keep users hooked the same way they are now. >> michael: four day. time now for pop news with lara. lara, what you got? >> lara: thank you, michael. we're gonna begin with round two of the australian open and see how our american players are faring. jess pegula winning her match in two straight sets. same with coco gauff, who earned her spot in round three.

[ applause ] peter sutherland himself. >> good morning. >> lara: it's so nice to meet you in person. i've heard great things. of course, i've seen the show. when we last met peter sutherland went from answering the phone in the white house basement to saving the president. now he's a night agent taking on these off the books national security investigations. >> yes, ma'am. >> lara: sounds like a recipe for a huge season 2. what can we expect from peter and his adjustment to this new job? >> i think it's, you know, i think it's better. with any promotion, you know, obviously comes an expectation, a greater expectation. he's been trained.

he's gone through the pipeline. now he's come out of it and it's his first field deployment. everything that happens in that world is pretty high stress. >> lara: it's not an accident that he's saving the president now. >> exactly. he's more proactive this season. first season he was very reactive. everything was happening to him. now he's making things happen. making decisions. the right thing cannot be done in a wrong way. he's sort of struggling making that. >> lara: the right thing cannot be done in a wrong way. >> the ends don't justify the means. it's a dangerous slippery slope. he starts to justify decisions he probably shouldn't. >> lara: the numbers are staggering of how many people watch the show like religiously. very, very addictive show. everybody is nodding. what do you think it is about your character peter and the premise of the show that's caught on like this? >> an inherent distrust for government. [ laughter ]

>> lara: oh, no. >> look, i think -- it's just a very -- i think people like to see people go through things. and not, you know, treat them like insignificant or sort of robots or whatever. peter suffers. peter makes decisions. he lives with the consequences of those decisions. it's not lost on me, you know, how many people enjoy the show. you know, your time as a person, your free will is the most important thing that you have. for someone to voluntarily choose to spend time watching my show. i think they added up the hours. 900 some years of people. >> lara: that's a big compliment. >> it's also kind of terrifying. it's weird. time is a very valuable resource, and for people to spend it watching me is a bizarre feeling.

it's cool. >> lara: yeah. we're happy for you. i know this was a huge break. i get that segment. i'm about to ask you about stunts because i know you insist on doing your own stunts. if you've seen the show, it's an edge of your seat kind of show. >> i insist on doing as much as i can. my stunt double has to subin for things insurance won't let me do. >> lara: yeah. >> yeah. i think it's -- >> lara: it's important, i would guess, to you. >> yeah. i call it death by 1,000 cuts. the more we cut things the more the audience is being lied to and things are being hidden to them. if that requires me to take hits and be tossed around. >> lara: then you'll do it. >> yeah. just makes for a more immersive experience. >> lara: that's why people love you. you're so authentic, very true to yourself and your craft. everything i've read about you incredibly complimentary. the show speaks for itself. >> thank you. >> lara: it is a pleasure to meet you. i hope everybody will tune in. season 2 of "the night agent" premieres on netflix next
