"give me a minute." i took the car, i wanted to go

see what was going on. i need a vision of what's happening. i stop at the fire guys. they're sitting up there, real nice guys, trucks, poised. they weren't panicking, they were just sitting in the truck above you. "hey! what kind of -- what does this rig cost what kind of money do you put into these cars?" [ laughter ] "what's the diesel engine? this is a new version?" "sir." "how much do you pump? you've got a lot of things going on there." it's so cool, fire trucks. i'm a fire truck freak. "sir, you might want to get out of the road." i'm standing in the road, people can't get by because i'm going, "this is great, i love firemen." "go east." "yeah. >> jimmy: i do backgo michigan and leave us alone." >> you know, we get -- my wife's all packed up. we go to my daughter's house, who lives in north hollywood. all i kept thinking was, i'm taking that car.

[ laughter ] they were just throwing crap in there. then there's a silver cup. what is the cup? it's a paul revere cup i got in an auction. i'm a big fan of the american revolution. no water for the cup, but we got a cup. [ laughter ] this is amazing. all this reminded -- i told my youngest kid, the northridge earthquake almost killed my family. >> jimmy: yeah, you were in that earthq earthquake. >> it was horrifying, horrifying. >> jimmy: you were living in the valley at that time. >> broke the house in two. almost killed everybody in the house. it was tear file. i told my youngest one, "this is like, unfortunately, a slow death. you watch it, the fire doing this." i hate fire now, i just hate it. i love those big buckets of water. i'm there watching, yeah, get it, kill it! >> jimmy: i felt that same way. >> more of that! >> jimmy: the helicopter drops. >> i love those drops. yeah, come on, kill that fire! [ laughter ] started looking like an alien or something. i hated fire. the earthquake, i told the

[ laughter ] i looked through all -- what do you grab? how do you plan for an emergency? god bless these fire people. i can't tell you how impressed and how wonderful we are that we have these people that do this. those diapers. i heard your daughter recently got married. >> my older one got married into a big family. you know, she called me, says, will you go to dance class with me? she was surprised i said yeah, i'll do that. >> jimmy: oh, for the ceremony? >> for the ceremony. i don't want him to make a fool out of me. >> jimmy: how many did you go to? >> five one-hour sessions. >> jimmy: wow. >> you know what, it worked. i came out -- funny story. my son-in-law, a great guy. devone. he comes up -- >> jimmy: good, you know his name, that's good. [ laughter ] >> that's good, wow. i like that. take a shot. that's really good. now i've diminished, i feel sad about myself. he wants -- i know he wants to ask me, he's like that kind of dude. >> jimmy: sure, yeah. >> we go to a basketball game. he didn't know how to say it. he goes, "i'm sweating through my pants." i said, "you could have said that a couple different ways. let's finish the basketball

"can we talk?" let's cut to this. >> jimmy: you knew kind of. >> he was sweating through his clothes this kid. what a genuine, great human being. he sits down, just like in the movies, "i want your hand, the hand of your daughter." i said, "you are the greatest guy." he's a great son-in-law. huge family. [ cheers and applause ] yeah, it's great. >> jimmy: have you -- like, is it weird suddenly having another -- a whole other family? >> you think? >> jimmy: that you're part of? they must be really excited you're in their family, right? >> they are -- it's too -- i think there's nine in there. >> jimmy: oh, yeah, wow. >> the dad's a physicist and a preacher at the same time. >> jimmy: wow. >> and they -- there's so many kids that you've got to get to know in 30 minutes. i can't remember what i did yesterday, so i'm really bad at that. >> jimmy: yeah. >> so i just call, "hey, you're one of the family, you're the family." you're more of a car guy than a tool guy, right? >> actually, i did the three shows. i love tools and construction. the second show is outdoor stuff, which i love, camping and that stuff. and i said to the guys -- they pitched this idea. "if i do another one, it would be the tom brady of sitcoms, go back and do it again, i want to be a widower, i want to deal with grief." i'm always amazed at people who deal with grief. this guy is a widower. i want to be around cars, people who restore stuff, don't buy new stuff. it's all about restoration. >> jimmy: when you came up to that idea, did you go to your actual wife and say, "i've got some news, honey." [ laughter ] "i love tools, i played the tool man. i love being a guy whose wife is deceased." >> "you decide how you want that to happen." gears." i like, first of all, it's always one syllable, then two syllables. what goes into picking the name? >> you know, this is a crazy thing. they go through all sorts of names. they have to go out and see if it's okay to use that name. >> jimmy: to make sure no one has the name? >> or the person that has it doesn't mind you -- i don't -- it's the weirdest thing in the world. they have to go through names. >> jimmy: there must be hundreds of thousands of matt parkers out there. >> you would think all of them would go, nope, never liked that guy. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: really? >> i always liked woody better than buzz. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, you can't be, like, you know, mario andretti or something like that. you've got to pick a name that sounds real. >> they come up with this when they're starting it. went through a couple different names. the body shop's supposed to be in north hollywood. near my -- i have a shop in north hollywood. it's kind of near all that. you couldn't use parker custom cars. you couldn't use parker restorations. that actually is a thing.

and i said, it's amazing how much they go through. yeah, we both work for abc, they're scared of everything. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, sure, they are. you use -- you actually use your own car as a prop on the show? >> well, i don't -- i don't have leno's collection. but i have a mighty collection. and we used one of my cars for the pilot. they said, we're going to have to get six more. i said, you can use my collection but they're all new. and the clever thing we're doing, it's a restoration shop. we're spending a weird amount of time and new technology making new stuff look old so we can make it look new again. so some of my brand-new cars look horrible. >> jimmy: couldn't you just get an old car and then spend the down time -- >> then we'd have to actually do that. >> jimmy: i see, you don't want to do that. >> no. >> jimmy: what was the first car you ever owned? >> my older brother went to college. i would take their cars and wreck them. [ laughter ] that's really what i did. >> jimmy: did you wreck your brothers' cars? >> all the time. i grew up in detroit. i was a drag racer on woodward

avenue. a lot of -- that was horrible. >> jimmy: did your brothers drag race also? >> no, they were kind of wimpy. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: they were not -- i'm guessing not that happy when you wrecked their cars? >> no, because they didn't know. i had to get a job and fix them before they got back from college. >> jimmy: oh. >> one of them i wrecked on the way home from the body shop. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: did you really? >> it was a corvair, they have a very -- it's a rear engine. >> jimmy: do you just turn right around and go back to the body shop? >> i did. the guy, "back again, eh, tim this" [ laughter ] >> jimmy: have you excited about the lions? >> yeah, well -- [ laughter ] short story but -- it's a very long story. 1937, the last time they won anything. >> jimmy: i was, wait a minute, what? it was great. [ laughter ] >> 1957. wow, you're on fire tonight. >> jimmy: oh, yeah. >> 1957's the last championship. so i've been going to the game since a kid. and it's -- winning is harder on me than losing. i'm so used to losing for years and years.

it's winning that's causing me a great amount of grief. so i don't watch the games. >> jimmy: i get that, i'm a mets fan. >> so sorry. >> jimmy: so you didn't even watch the games. >> i do this weird thing like with movies. you and i both like sci-fi. what i do is read the script. if the ending is worth it, i'll watch the movie. because i can't stand movies like "silo," it's going to be really cool, what's going to be the end of it? oh, it's going to be another "silo" and the aliens have ears. >> jimmy: the nfl is unable to is it send you that script before the game? [ laughter ] >> no, i get the results from draft kings. >> jimmy: i see. >> draft kings has the scores already laid out. >> jimmy: i see. >> gambling and the nfl, what could possibly go wrong with that? line that the women who are making accusations, all 40 or 42 of them, are out for a cash grab. >> oren and his older brother, tal, touted themselves as superstar brokers in ultra luxe deals at douglas elliman, the real estate company. in 2019, the alexander team helped broker the sale of a nearly $240 million penthouse in this manhattan building, at the time the most expensive residential sale in u.s. history. >> these guys lived a world of ultra luxury. their clients were some of the richest and most well-known people in the country, and in order to work in that world, they also embodied that world. they partied in the hamptons. they partied in miami, they partied in aspen. they really were living the embodiment of this luxury dream that was very much tied to the brand of real estate that they sold. >> the brothers later formed their own real estate firm called official. >> official is the only hyper specialized residential brokerage in the market today, focused on the top end of the market. >> oren's twin alone, an executive in the family's company, kent security in miami.
