>> abc seven news starts right now. >> heartbreak in hollister tonight after three high school students die in a car accident. a memorial is growing at the spot where they lost control and slammed into another car. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the three teenagers killed were all seniors at hollister high school. a school leaders say a former student was in the car with them and is in the hospital right now in critical condition. >> the chp says the teens were driving down a rural road between gilroy and hollister when the 17 year old driver swerved into oncoming traffic and hit another car. two people in the other car went to the hospital. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us the shock and grief as investigators search for answers. >> a roadside memorial is growing to honor three teenage boys killed in a head on crash, the chp says on tuesday, just before 7 p.m, the boys were traveling west on shore road, just outside hollister, when the

driver lost control and crossed into opposing traffic. 17 year old angel villegas lemus, 17 year old victor lujan and 18 year old brandon alarcon died on wednesday evening. philip nunez, who didn't know the teens personally, dropped off flowers. >> it's just devastating, man. you know, i think about the families, the parents, you know, the loved ones that are left behind. >> nunez is a mentor for a nonprofit that helps young individuals. he consoled a friend who knew the teens and said a prayer with him. >> it's a loss, and, you know, there's not much you can do for that, but but just support them, you know, and just be there for them because they're there. they're going to need somebody. >> earlier in the day, victor lujan's grandmother went to the scene of the crash. she said victor would have turned 18 on friday. >> we're all brokenhearted, brokenhearted. >> we talked to classmates and friends who have been coming to this memorial. they did not want to go on camera. you can see how

they're still in shock from what happened. they said all three of them were very close friends. >> the kids is my concern and how their mental state and how that's going to impact them. >> kendra barron, ceo of san benito county chamber of commerce, met us outside hollister high school. all three of the teenage boys involved in the crash were seniors. >> this is our only high school, so this high school is a huge part of this community. >> the school released a statement that said, in part, this loss is profoundly felt by all of us and adding counselors will be available to students. the chp is still investigating whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. in hollister, lauren martinez abc seven news. >> a san leandro city council member's home was raided by the fbi. investigators are remaining tight lipped about what they're looking for. as first reported by the bay area news group, the home belongs to brian azevedo. he was not. has not responded to

our request for comment. azevedo did go on a trip to vietnam in 2023 that was sponsored by david duong. if that last name sounds familiar, it's the same family that owns california waste solutions. the company got swept up in the oakland city hall scandal that saw agents raid then-mayor sheng tao's home last year. the investigation is looking into campaign contributions. >> building a better bay area is all about finding the best solutions to our biggest problems. and tonight, oakland is debating just that. the police department is considering changes to its pursuit policy, something that's drawn criticism from community members all the way to the governor. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn explains the arguments on both sides. >> and no chase and no chase. >> frustrations reaching a boiling point wednesday night, some people are calling for change to the oakland police department's pursuit policy. >> demanding that police get the green light to chase after more suspects. >> we need to deter the folks that would think to come to

oakland, that there will be consequences. we will not tolerate this lawlessness. >> there are also those who want the policy to stay. as is saying, people have already gotten hurt during chases when police officers killed people in their people. dozens of people attended a special town hall on wednesday night. >> there is a crisis in the city. >> in december, governor gavin newsom criticized the oakland police department's pursuit policy. the governor said he would continue to have the chp help patrol oakland, but only if the city made changes and ramped up its policy. right now, oakland police officers are only allowed to initiate pursuits when they have a reasonable suspicion a suspect committed a violent crime or has a gun. the chair of the oakland police commission says there's been a lot of confusion around the current policy. >> the policy itself is not a no chase policy. it's a policy that requires permission from a watch commander or command officer. if the pursuit exceeds 50 miles an

continuing to make progress tonight on those southern california wildfires. containment has ticked up now to 21% on the palisades fire. it's burned nearly 24,000 acres. the eaton fire is holding at just over 14,000 acres and is 45% contained. at least 25 people have died in the fires, but that number is expected to go up. one man says his father and older brother, who were who was disabled, died when the eaton fire swept through their home in altadena. >> his last words were help us. he was trying to get him and him and my brother out of here. dying in a fire is not a pretty way to go. no one deserves that. especially not my dad and brother. >> the weather is expected to improve over the next few days, which should help firefighters along with the recovery effort as well. san francisco's firefighters are getting some support. they got to meet jay leno today, who has been out there trying to offer as much help as he can. while the devastating wildfires in southern california are renewing safety concerns for people in the east bay. it was a packed

house tonight at a town council meeting in moraga. many residents fear that their town is simply not prepared for evacuations. should a natural disaster like a wildfire happen. it's surrounded by hills and has few, mostly small, two lane roads in and out. a new apartment complex was also on the agenda tonight, which many think would make evacuation conditions worse. moraga police chief john king says solid plans are in place. >> if i have to put people in a temporary refuge area, a it's really bad and b we failed. that's our absolute last resort. we do not want to do that. >> moraga firefighters also have been conducting prescribed burns to try to maintain the brush for southern california. >> the fire danger is looking better, but it's still not done. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the red flag warning extending now into tomorrow. sandhya. that's right ama. >> and that is because their danger is still there. let me

show you why that small section is under a red flag warning. you see the winds right now? browns canyon, 23 miles an hour. they've really backed off from earlier, but the wind is still a very drying wind, and it's going to be gusty up to 40 miles an hour in that small section that's going under a red flag warning until 3 p.m. tomorrow. humidity is still low 10 to 20%. those downsloping winds will remain in that 25 to 27 mile an hour range. simi valley 27. at midnight, you'll notice close to 30 miles an hour heading into the morning hours, and then the wind starts to switch direction, transporting higher humidity into that area. back here at home it is a beautiful view. clear skies looking at the golden gate bridge. and here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow morning. clear and chilly. 30s. 40s. bright and sunny. but by the afternoon, some fog starts to roll back in temperatures in the 60s and there will be fog in the evening hours at our beaches, setting the stage for changes heading into the weekend. i'll be back with that in just a little bit.

found in a tunnel in gaza. his parents want all of the hostages to come home. >> the message to the decision makers, including in israel, is do not allow any other family to go through what we have gone through. all of these 98 must come home. >> biden also touched on several topics and did not name names, but there were clear references in his remarks. he issued this warning today an oligarchy is taking shape in america of extreme wealth, power and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy. incoming president trump has the backing of several billionaires, including the richest man in the world, elon musk. the president then took clear aim at policy changes enacted by social media companies like facebook, which recently announced it was doing away with fact checkers. >> americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power. the free press is crumbling, editors are disappearing. social media is

30 years. police say an unhoused woman found dead in an alley may be the first known victim of a man tied to the killings of women across the country. the suspect is ricky dawson. he's accused of sexually assaulting, strangling and killing 45 year old nancy hernandez in san francisco back in 1992. police in seattle have linked him to a similar killing there, and he was convicted of a woman's murder in florida. right now, he's in jail in denver awaiting trial for yet another woman's sexual assault and killing. san francisco police reopened their case months after dawson's denver arrest and identified him using dna. he will be brought to san francisco after his trial in denver. >> all right. if you want proof, some people will steal anything. listen to this. in the east bay, detectives are investigating thefts at a cemetery in contra costa county. deputies say an estimated 200 bronze vases that were attached to gravesites are now missing. this happened at oakland memorial park in unincorporated lafayette over the last month or so. a memorial bench was also vandalized. if

you have any information that could help with the investigation, you're asked to call the contra costa county sheriff's office. >> new developments today, a santa clara congressman is calling on the fbi to investigate the death of an open ai whistleblower. 26 year old suchir balaji was found dead in his san francisco apartment last month. today, representative ro khanna posted on social media saying there should be a full and transparent investigation into the death by the fbi or appropriate agency. according to the medical examiner, he died by suicide, but his parents say they don't believe that and they have hired a private investigator. san francisco police say it is an open case. >> the department of justice is suing southwest, claiming the airline is illegally late. the unprecedented new lawsuit argues southwest knew its schedule was unrealistic, but continued with delayed flights for months on end. one of the worst offenders a route out of oakland. the lawsuit says the route between
