consistently delayed for five straight months back in 2022. transportation secretary pete buttigieg says airlines have a legal obligation to keep realistic schedules. southwest says it plans to fight the lawsuit. for months, we've been following the story of danger in the water at oakland schools, and it turns out that steph and ayesha curry's foundation is helping oakland unified pay to clear lead from its water. the warriors stars eat learn play foundation has helped put $650,000 toward water filtration systems for dozens of schools. testing last year showed lead in the water, forcing the district to shut off faucets right as the school year started. the district says making the water lead free could cost up to $53 million in all. >> time now for news to know where we catch you up on some headlines you can't miss. tonight. we're focused on several big developments in the world of health, from a new approach to obesity to a

potentially life altering treatment and a new ban that could impact a lot of what we eat and drink. here's your news to know. the fda is banning a popular dye used in candy, soda and other products. the ban on red dye number three comes more than three decades after it was first found to cause cancer in lab rats. manufacturers have until 2027 to reformulate their products. federal health officials are also working to limit nicotine levels in cigarettes. in a proposal announced today. they say the move could reduce the addictiveness of tobacco products and make them easier to quit. a group of medical experts is proposing a new way to determine if someone is obese. they say patients should be evaluated based on body fat and related health conditions instead of bmi, which considers height and weight only. they also recommend two categories preclinically obese and clinically obese. drugmaker eli lilly says one of its medications has been approved to treat adults with moderate to severe crohn's disease, which

impacts the digestive tract. the drug is already approved in the u.s. to treat other bowel diseases. researchers say. about a million people in the u.s. have crohn's disease, and it's becoming more common. >> a legal battle between two san francisco businesses with the same name appears to be ove. back in 2023, quince, the restaurant group, sued quince, the online shopping site, accusing the company of copyright infringement, according to court documents. the lawsuit has been dismissed, with each side responsible for their own costs. both parties are still using the quince name, by the way. >> okay, we want to get a check on our weather. yeah. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here with our forecast. yeah. >> and dan and ama tonight, we are feeling the chill temperatures very january, like 39 in livermore right now, 37 in fairfield. and we are in for another cold one. but just in case you're thinking it's way too cold for us. look at other places around the country. butte, montana, 1018 in detroit,

19 in chicago. you factor in the wind and the wind chill, making it feel like two degrees in detroit and six degrees in cleveland just turned to one. all right. 17 in new york, i think we'll pass our weather actually. beautiful. there is a little bit of haze looking from our mount tam cam, and that haze has been with us throughout the day. the air quality is moderate in pockets, as you can see with the yellows there. some green indicating good air quality around places like redwood city. part of the reason why is we really don't have the strong winds to mix out the atmosphere. so the pollutants are just kind of getting trapped right down near the surface. you can see winds are calm to light, much different in the last 24 hours. peak wind gusts in southern california. marshall peak 70, browns canyon 69. you will notice 58 at wylie ridge. high pressure and low pressure separating a bit, so not quite as windy in southern california. now high pressure is still going to keep us dry. low pressure moving to the southwest at this hour and here in the bay area.

although right now it is clear, i think a few patches of fog will be forming towards the morning hours from our san jose camera. clear skies tomorrow. chilly morning, mild afternoon friday through the weekend. we're expecting fog and then sunshine with cooler weather and monday. we do have gusty offshore winds coming back into the picture. so tomorrow the biggest change you're going to notice is the fog starts to creep back in. by 2:00 in the afternoon, the coast is starting to turn gray and heading into the evening hours, spilling over into the bayside communities. morning temperatures bottoming out at 33 in livermore. bundle up. 35. santa rosa 36 napa 40s right around san rafael, san francisco, oakland and san jose. now looking at your afternoon highs, they'll range from the low to the upper 60s, a patches of fog along the coast, the rest of you looking at sunshine still above average for this time of year. winds start to change as we head towards really monday where we're going to start to notice. this is really interesting. the model is not actually updating here, just

trust me on this. okay, was updating just moments ago. gusty winds will be developing. i want to show you what else is going to happen. so tomorrow, friday into friday night, some fog returns along the coast that will help the firefighters in southern california. the humidity goes up. we will even see some areas of drizzle near the coast which will help out by monday, though those gusty offshore winds over 40 to 45 miles an hour will mean fire concerns will be renewed again in southern california, and that dry pattern blocking the storm track. everything going to our north. the accuweather seven day forecast will feature a chilly starts followed by sunshine dry pattern continuing, but the weekend is cooler, which includes martin luther king junior day. that's when gusty winds return, so just stay aware winds return, so just stay aware of it. dry through i love that my daughter still needs me. but sometimes i can't help due to burning and stabbing pain in my hands, so i use nervive. nervive's clinical dose of ala reduces nerve discomfort in as little as seven days. now i can help again

scheduled flight to chicago. southwest says alsop has been removed from duty and is apologizing to passengers who were delayed for nearly five hours. and southwest airlines is facing a lawsuit and fines over persistent flight delays. the transportation department is accusing southwest of illegally operating chronically delayed flights and disrupting passengers travel plans. the agency says it's seeking, quote, maximum civil penalties, which could run into six figures. it's also slapped frontier airlines a fine of 650,000 for similar violations. >> the cdc has confirmed a positive case of bird flu in a san francisco child. this is the country's second child infected with bird flu. the first case in november, was also a child from california with unknown exposure. and at chicago's lincoln park zoo, a harbor seal and a young chilean flamingo died from the bird flu last week. the zoo says visitors are not at risk, but the bird house will be closed until further notice. >> well, the fda is extending its ban on red dye number three after outlawing its use in

cosmetic and topical drugs years ago. the agency now wants it gone from all food products, citing its potential to cause cancer in humans. abc's erielle reshef has the details. >> it's the artificial food dye giving hundreds of products their bright red color. >> from candy and cakes to drinks and medication. >> but the fda is moving to ban red dye three because of a potential cancer risk. after a petition from food safety advocates, decades after fda admitted that this chemical is indeed a carcinogen in animals, it has taken the product off the market. red dye three was banned from cosmetics and topical drugs in 1992. the fda saying the dye has not been linked to cancer in humans, only in rats. but the fda, noting it's required by law to remove any additive found to cause cancer in people or animals. >> these products have been banned in europe for many, many years, so i wonder why the fda approved them in the first place. >> some in the food color

ever, the women's tournament is going to start to reap some of the financial rewards that it has deserved for a long time, but has never been allowed to have in 2021. >> video of the women's basketball weight room during the division one playoffs compared to the men's sparked a debate over disparity. since then, women's basketball has exploded in popularity. the women's ncaa tournament last year was its most successful ever, with a title game bringing in a record audience of nearly 19 million viewers. about 4 million more than the men's title game. >> the sexism was was there, and it was truly unfair for our female athletes compared to our male athletes. >> payments will be in effect for the upcoming tournament. participating schools will share in the revenue, with winning teams receiving more money. the pot will begin at $15 million this year and will progressively grow next year, up to 20 million. still not as much as the men, but analysts say it's a step in the right direction. >> it's all come together now,
