help might be on the way, and relief efforts for wildfire victims are well underway. how northern california is stepping up to help. plus, we're getting a look at how san francisco is preparing for fire emergencies with innovative technology. good morning everybody. it's sunday, january 19th and boy is it chilly out there. >> it is so cold. we are just above freezing in spots and we have frost with fog out there. it's foggy in san jose, frosty in the north bay, and we've got high pressure, which is really our dominating weather factor. but look at these temperatures freezing in danville at 3237 palo alto. it is 35. in concord, livermore at 33, brentwood, 36. and in the north bay, 33, santa rosa, 34. vacaville, napa. and temperatures are in the mid 30s in sonoma, so anywhere from 2 to 12 degrees colder. this morning you are going to feel it heading out and look at the visibility. just a quarter of a mile in san

jose, napa and novato. can't see anything at all. reduced visibility in santa rosa as well. so we've got fog and frost and look at the temperatures. by 11:00 we are still in the 40s, maybe a few 50s. sunny skies 3:00. mid 50s, upper 50s in the south bay. we are going to warm up, but we also are going to dry things out with a wind advisory to talk about for our north bay interior mountains coming up steph. >> all right lisa thank you. a dooming message for tiktok users in america hit their phone screens earlier than expected. the popular video sharing app went dark for u.s. users on saturday. this message you see on your screen pops up that reads, sorry, tiktok is not available right now. the alert mentions president elect donald trump, indicating that he will work on a solution to reinstate the app once he takes office. it comes after the supreme court upheld the january 19th ban, after the china based company refused to sell to a non-chinese company. some users expressed

the impact tiktok had for current generations. >> i think the biggest thing has been really how much gen z and young people have leveraged this platform to advance our social issues and to advance what we believe to be right. >> trump. >> trump says he will most likely give tiktok a 90 day extension on inauguration day, which of course, is tomorrow. meantime, south bay lawmaker ro khanna spoke with content creators impacted by this ban. for many, their livelihoods are at risk. >> some of them were in tears. they were saying, we're not even going to ensure if we get unemployment. what are we going to do? no one is talking about the real people who are really getting hurt with this ban. it is tone deaf. it's a bunch of washington politicians listening to the foreign policy blob and totally out of touch with americans. >> he says they have almost a million petition signatures to call on the president to put a

pause on this ban. it's the most signatures he's gathered in eight years in congress. to berkeley now, police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year. a woman is dead, and two men are in the hospital after a triple stabbing yesterday afternoon. police say they were responding to russell street, near acton for a stolen vehicle investigation just before 1230. that's when they got a call about several people lying on the ground bleeding. >> we have multiple stabbing victims here, multiple stabbing victims and an unresponsive female bleeding from multiple stab wounds. >> police have not released any information yet on suspects or what led up to this stabbing. now to the wildfires burning in southern california. containment is growing. and while tens of thousands of people still remain under evacuation notices, more are lifting. cal fire reports the palisades fire, which started in the pacific

palisades, is now almost halfway contained. it's holding at nearly 24,000 acres. to the east in altadena, the eaton fire is 73% contained after burning more than 14,000 acres. 27 people have been confirmed dead. more than 13,000 structures are believed to have been destroyed. fire officials are investigating what caused the fires. there is another round of fire fueling winds expected next week. a number of bay area businesses are holding fundraisers and pop up events to support those affected by the devastation in los angeles. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn caught up with a few groups determined to help. >> i was at one in el cerrito. the vino is flowing for a good cause. every glass poured, every small bite served. every customer that shows up helps make a difference. 5% of all sales at the wine bar goes to world central kitchen to help fire victims in los angeles. >> we felt really compelled to

join in whatever way we could. >> claire sullivan is the owner of banter wine. she says the devastating fires hit home. sullivan's husband lost his family home during the tubbs fire in santa rosa. >> my partner's house parents house in santa rosa burned down in the 2017 fires. and so just after seeing kind of how widespread these fires down south have been, felt motivated in the small way that we can to contribute. >> it was it was incredible, really. >> at octavia restaurant in san francisco, a long line wrapped around the building saturday morning. >> we had a potato galette. we had a monkey bread that was like cheese, and we had a lemon lemon tart. >> in return for a donation, customers got a pastry. >> we had about 700 pastries going into the day, and we sold out in like an hour and a half. i think that really shows. just like the power of community. >> robert wright is the owner of octavia restaurant. he says a

large part of the proceeds will go to fire victims in los angeles. >> i'm from santa rosa, and i remember the tubbs fire in 2017. you know, basically leveled that entire town. so i know it takes a lot of help from within and from without to help a community recover. >> epic restaurant along san francisco's embarcadero is donating proceeds from the sales of every stake through the end of the month. scola's restaurant is holding a fundraiser this coming thursday. it's a family style crab dinner feed at black jet baking company in san francisco. proceeds from their special coconut i love ella cake will go to restaurants care to support food and beverage workers affected by the wildfires. bay area bars, restaurants, bakeries they're all hoping to help make a difference. northern california sending love and support to southern california. >> i think every little bit helps and we all should chip in. >> in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> well, some oaklanders are down in altadena showing support for those impacted by southern

california's fires. a crew from oakland's urban compassion project distributed pet supplies to refugees. they went to a local hotel and a ymca with all these donated supplies. they're working with other organizations and animal shelters to coordinate distribution. if you'd like to support their efforts, you can donate pet supplies, water and funds online to the urban compassion project. well, relief efforts are also happening on the slopes this weekend. palisades tahoe is holding a special three day fundraiser for those impacted by the fires. the resort is selling lift tickets for $99 and donating 100% of sales to relief efforts. on top of that, palisades tahoe and its parent company are both matching all the donations, meaning every ticket sold gets tripled in value. incredible to see that. well, good morning america raised nearly $6.5 million friday morning for wildfire relief efforts. and you can

our live picture from highway 87. as you see all the fog socked in there, it's 511. as time goes on, we're learning more harrowing stories of people helping their neighbors during the tense minutes when flames were spreading in southern california. eyewitness news reporter leanne suter tells us about a group of fire crews that went above and beyond to help one family save their precious possessions. what? what? >> oh my god. let me see. oh my god! oh my god! mama >> tears of joy in the midst of heartbreaking loss for the gonzalez garza family, they returned to their altadena home to find it burned to the ground. the whole thing is gone. >> it's all gone. >> but then they spotted two blue coolers in the driveway full of family photos pulled

from their home. >> we started realizing somebody went in there in the chaos and found these photos and saved them for us. >> but it was joy because it brought all of a sudden, all the loss was kind of filled in that moment with, with this joy of kindness, with kindness. we were thinking, who were the angels that were here? >> those angels and heroes? pasadena firefighters jonathan gonzalez and rich garcia getting hugs of gratitude from a grateful family. they were posted along east altadena drive for structure protection when they realized they couldn't stop the fire raging in the attic, they decided to do what they could as they raced out. >> knowing this house, there's nothing gonna survive in this household and being able to pull something else. at least some memories, is the main thing that i focused on those photos. >> irreplaceable of grandparents and parents from cuba and mexico. garcia and gonzalez say

it was gut wrenching to see home after home burn, as the fierce winds and flames won the fight. >> i honestly wish we could have done a lot more with what what little time we had with how fast the fire was moving, how fast houses were going up. it was little that we could do for the family. >> it was more than they could have ever imagined and say they can't believe in the midst of the danger and chaos, two firefighters focused on an overwhelming act of kindness. >> hearing about the joy from the family, discovering those photos. and matters to me. >> wow. an incredible act of kindness there. well, san francisco police department's undercover efforts to crack down on crime is reportedly seeing significant progress. sfpd says felony arrests increased by 20% in 2020 for crimes included violent crime, auto burglaries, drug dealing and retail theft.

plainclothes team made 601 felony arrests, compared with 500 the previous year, and the department's unit seized 73 firearms, up from 50. in 2023, police say crime last year was the lowest it's been in 20 years. san jose police have arrested a man in connection to setting fires in the baton rouge neighborhood. police say the fires were reported just before 11 saturday morning near capitol avenue and marbury road. officers and fire crews were able to put out the flames. there have been no injuries reported at this time. a company will pay out a massive settlement in the hunters point shipyard environmental lawsuit. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, tetra tech ec will pay $97 million to the federal government. the shipyard was once a cleanup site for ships exposed to atomic weapons for research into the effects of radiation. the government joined whistleblower cases alleging the

company misrepresented soil samples and falsified data. authorities are monitoring the air quality in the monterey area after a battery facility caught fire. in an update yesterday, they say they are checking for hydrogen fluoride and other particulates near moss landing and have not found any risks. they're also reporting the flames to be out and are hopeful they don't reignite again at this time. the epa says it does not believe water quality has been impacted. the investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing. in the oakland hills, neighbors are learning how to make their homes resilient to fire threats. a demonstration was put on by a montclair neighborhood firewise group. with the help of some experts and local fire officials. they taught around 20 people about home hardening and how to create defensible space around their houses. >> i think the la fires just touched the heart of every single californian, because we

live with that fear all the time. i think it's really important that people remember that it can happen to you and it could happen tomorrow. so be educated and be ready. >> they also explained how residents can make changes to their homes with more fire resistant materials. well, the wildfires in los angeles have raised serious questions about san francisco's readiness when it comes to an emergency. the city says it is ready to respond to a disaster. and abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has intel on the fire department's innovative technology and water supply. >> water power on display along san francisco's embarcadero. the san francisco fire department, showing off its unique firefighting tools like the saint francis fireboat, essentially a floating fire hydrant on the bay. >> imagine a fire under that pier. this can the fire boat can get in really close and extinguish fires in pier areas.

>> new fire chief dean crispin giving mayor daniel lurie a tour outside fireboat station 35 and a demonstration of the city's high pressure fire hydrant system. it's no coincidence that this demo drill is happening in the wake of the southern california wildfire disaster. many locals are asking, how ready is san francisco? >> i'm getting this question a lot. in our first ten days in office. >> lurie believes the city is ready. >> we have a fully staffed fire department. we have over 200 cisterns, including new ones on the west side. >> in an emergency, the city has an unlimited water supply from the bay using submersible pumps. >> right now you're seeing a essentially fire engine in the water, pumping water to the fire tender hose tender. >> this hose tender truck is new for the department. it can pump 5500 gallons of water per minute versus a typical fire engine, which pumps 1500 gallons. >> we're very lucky. we have a

primary water supply, which is essentially our domestic water supply. those are the white hydrants that you see in almost in every corner in san francisco. we have a secondary water supply which is specifically used for firefighting. >> after two very stressful weeks, we decided to come here to stay with our friends. >> elaine zang and her family are visiting from west l.a. luckily, they didn't evacuate their home, but she was very surprised to see this fire drill demo happening. >> i think that's the right thing to do. that's what we need. i hope la has prepared better for the wildfires we had. >> the mayor says real time drills like this are happening every weekend across the city. >> and so we will be vigilant. we will stay on top of it. that's my commitment to the people of san francisco. we have to keep them as safe as possible. >> in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> well, bart is seeing more daily riders to start 2025. it says numbers show an increase of anywhere from 10,000 to 24,000 people compared year, year to year. that is, the transit

agency attributes this to the installation of new faregates, along with some changes to the clipper card program. however, it also pointed out it needs another source of funding. bart relies heavily on passenger fares for funding, but it has taken a huge hit from the pandemic. in the east bay, an official changing of the political guard on which i am about to enter, of which i am about to enter. >> so help me god. so help me god. congresswoman lateefah simon and her mother. >> there you see it. former longtime congresswoman barbara lee passing the torch to the east bay's new representative, lateefah simon. a community swearing in event was held at the grand lake theater in oakland, and simon was ceremonially sworn in by vice president kamala harris on january 7th in washington, dc.

simon, of course, replaces barbara lee in representing california's 12th congressional district. while lee might be done in washington, she's already after her next possible job. last week, she officially announced she is running for oakland mayor, with shengtao being recalled in the november. a special election will be held in april. lauren taylor, who narrowly lost to tao in 2022, has also entered the race. well, switching gears to weather now, it's hard to see much of anything in the south bay from our camera in san jose. it's pretty that fog is socked in there. yeah, it really is. >> and then the cold temperatures for the north and east bay just above freezing, some areas at freezing. so it is certainly a cold morning. stay inside a little bit longer in bed because we are looking at a slow warm up today. temperatures will be around average, but it's going to take all throughout the afternoon to really get there. look at this ridge of high

pressure all the way up into british columbia. and we've got an area of low pressure that's going to dive down beside it. and that is setting up a santa ana event, a strong one again, as we get into a red flag warning tomorrow and tuesday, wind gusts could be as high as 60 and 70 miles an hour, with humidity 5 to 15%. so this red flag warning. los angeles ventura county 10:00 monday until 10 p.m. tuesday, and average winds 25 to 45 miles an hour. so we're going to get more of this gusty wind activity as the winds accelerate coming down the mountains there and the warm up and humidity bone dry. so as we start out with the light winds into monday morning, look how quickly they accelerate to over 40 miles an hour here. so this means that they're going to be even stronger when they get that momentum coming down the mountain there. and as we go through the afternoon, you'll notice 30 to 40 mile an hour wind gusts. this is on tuesday.

and so critical fire weather is back for southern california. in fact we're looking at this to last the next couple of days in the southland and up in the bay area as well, where we have our own wind advisory, certainly not as strong as what they're having in southern california, what they will have tomorrow. we're in the 30s for livermore and danville, 30 for fairfield, 33, santa rosa. look how chilly it is from the peninsula. hayward's at 37 and palo alto, so definitely bundle up out there. another look from san jose, where there is plenty of fog and reduced visibility from the north bay to the south bay this morning, so patchy frost and fog. so monday. windy conditions in the hills, particularly the north bay mountains, but we'll see those wind gusts all throughout the east bay. the diablo range probably not quite as high. and then beyond that, we'll get into a milder forecast where temperatures will warm up through the 60s, even possibly 70, in the south bay, wave heights currently continue to go up here. so our beach hazards statement until 7:00 for

dangerous conditions here all along the pacific coast. and as we look at our wind advisory here, 4 a.m. tomorrow morning through 1 a.m. on tuesday, you can see from clear lake, mount saint helena, the very gusty winds. we've got nothing but sunny conditions throughout your sunday. a little fog comes back, but look at those offshore winds all throughout the day on monday and tuesday. then eventually some higher clouds move in and then the wind gusts there from 30 to 40 miles an hour. so a breezy to gusty day in the upper elevations for tomorrow. and then here's our warm up. wednesday mid 60s, thursday upper 60s to 70s and friday. we are still mild. highs today on the cooler side 58 concord, 59 san mateo and the accuweather seven day forecast. the holiday monday martin luther king junior day. we will get those gusty winds in our hills and then little change on tuesday. then our midweek warm up through the end of the week. stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. still ahead celebrations already underway in anticipation for the lunar new year.

off a weekend of events last night with a fireworks show at his golf club in sterling, virginia. trump telling abc's rachel scott his inaugural address will be about unity, strength and fairness. on his final day before taking office, trump participating in a ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier at arlington national cemetery. tonight, he will have a campaign style rally at the capital one arena in downtown washington. workers are busy building a stage inside the capitol rotunda after the decision was made to move monday's inaugural events indoors. trump, citing an arctic blast sweeping the country. trump writing online i don't want to see people hurt or injured in any way. therefore, i have ordered the inaugural address, in addition to prayers and other speeches to be delivered in the united states capitol rotunda. the massive outdoor platform where the oath is normally taken can hold more than a thousand people. the rotunda can only hold about 600 guests. president biden, members of congress and other notable guests will be there, but the vast majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person. the swearing in ceremony was last

moved indoors 40 years ago. so help me god. >> congratulations. >> when president reagan was sworn in for his second term, according to trump's post, the capital one arena will be open tomorrow for what he's calling live viewing of this historic event. the arena will also host a presidential parade. trump says he will join the crowd there after he is sworn in. as for trump's priorities, once he does take office, he says immigration will be a large focus, with executive actions being taken on day one and through the first 100 days. perry, russom, abc news, capitol hill. >> well, as president elect trump steps in, the irs commissioner is stepping down. danny werfel says he'll resign after the inauguration tomorrow. he has three years remaining of his five year term, but he would likely be fired. trump already picked out former republican representative billy long to lead the tax agency. if long gets confirmed, he'll finish out the same term ending in 2027.

werfel said this was the best way to support a successful transition. we, of course, will have live team coverage of the inauguration tomorrow starting at 6 a.m, right here on abc seven. well, hundreds of people turned out for the people's march here in san francisco. rally goers gathered at 24th and bryant streets and then marched all the way to dolores park, where they briefly blocked an intersection. organizers billed it as a day to support progressive rights with a focus on immigration, the economy, women's rights, and other personal freedoms. >> it becomes frustrating for people to see where we've been going as a country and getting together, getting out in the sun together. it'll recharge everybody. >> another group also held a rally in alameda. nationally, there were hundreds of similar marches held ahead of trump's inauguration. well, the israeli

government has agreed to a cease fire deal with hamas, which just took effect last night. the first israeli hostages will be released soon after the first phase of the truce, and israel will release nearly 2000 palestinians from its prisons. abc news reporter tom bridge has the latest. >> reporter tonight, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, speaking publicly for the first time since his government and hamas reached the agreement. >> kumasi trump, the government see biden, netanyahu, netanyahu thanking the u.s, saying israel reserves the right to restart the war in six weeks from now. >> if negotiations with hamas for a longer truce fail. the israeli cabinet approving the agreement, which paved the way for an initial six week ceasefire. but some in israel's government did not support the deal. far right israeli minister itamar ben-gvir calling the deal reckless and announcing his party will resign from

netanyahu's governing coalition. relatives of some of the hostages expressing concern the king is not yet dry. >> now our goal is to ensure this government implements the entire agreements fully. >> in a document released saturday, israel confirming it will, during phase one of the deal, release more than 700 palestinians held in israeli prisons, including some convicted of serious crimes. as part of the agreement, israel will also free an additional 1100 gazans who did not participate in the october 7th terror attack, but were being held by israel without charge. in exchange, hamas will release 33 israeli hostages, including two americans, keith segal and saggy dickerson. the first three living female israeli hostages are set to be freed on sunday in exchange for an initial group of palestinians, 95 mainly female
