you open up tiktok here in the u.s, a ban is now in effect, but help might be on the way and relief efforts for wildfire victims are well underway. how northern california is stepping up to help. plus, we're getting a look at how san francisco is preparing for fire emergencies with innovative technology. good sunday morning, everybody. it is january 19th and if you haven't felt it already, it is chilly out there and the fog. that's right. >> we had temperatures right around freezing in some neighborhoods earlier, and our dense fog advisory has been extended until noontime. there's a look at live doppler seven showing a huge dominant ridge of high pressure in the low clouds and fog along the coast. that's going to change, though, so there's a look at the hazardous conditions from the north bay to the south bay, and visibility right now. check it out. you can't see any thing in concord or napa. one mile visibility down in san jose, a quarter mile in nevada. livermore is a little bit better. and from our east bay hills camera top vollmer peak, you can see that marine

layer 47, san francisco 39, in redwood city and from the shark tank a lot of cloud cover 36 santa rosa, 37 petaluma. so it is still awfully cold out there where temperatures 24 hours ago were much milder. so we're 5 to 8 degrees colder. it's a slow warm up today. the clouds are going to part, but temperatures only making it into the mid 50s by about 1:00 and the afternoon highs upper 50s. we'll talk about the wind advisory for monday and then warmer readings beyond that. stephanie >> all right lisa thank you. a dooming message for tiktok users here in america hit their phone screens earlier than expected. the popular video sharing app went dark for u.s. users on saturday, and this message you see on your screen popped up, which read sorry, tiktok is not available right now. the alert also mentioned president elect donald trump, indicating that he will work on a solution to reinstate the app once he takes office. it comes after the supreme court upheld the january 19th ban after the china based company refused to sell to a

non-chinese company. some users expressed the impact tiktok had for current generations. >> i think the biggest thing has been really how much gen z and young people have leveraged this platform to advance our social issues and to advance what we believe to be right from trump is asking tech companies not to let tiktok go dark. >> he says he'll sign an executive order tomorrow on inauguration day, giving tiktok a 90 day extension. meanwhile, south bay lawmaker khanna spoke with content creators impacted by this ban. and he says for many, their livelihoods are at risk. >> some of them were in tears. they were saying, we're not even going to sure if we get unemployment, what are we going to do? no one is talking about the real people who are really getting hurt with this ban. it is tone deaf. it's a bunch of washington politicians listening to the foreign policy blob and

totally out of touch with americans. >> the congressman says they have almost a million petition signatures to call on the president to put a pause on this ban, and it's the most signatures he's received in his eight years in congress. to berkeley. now, police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year, a woman is dead and two men are in the hospital after a triple stabbing yesterday afternoon. police say they were responding to russell street near acton for a stolen vehicle investigation just before 1230. that's when they got a call about several people lying on the ground bleeding. >> so far, we have multiple stabbing victims here. >> copy. multiple stabbing victims, unresponsive female bleeding from multiple stab wounds. >> police have notrillioneleased any information yet on suspects or what led up to this stabbing ? now to the wildfires burning in southern california. contain movement is growing. this

morning. and while tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation notices, more are lifting cal fire reports. the palisades fire, which started in the pacific palisades, is now more than 50% contained. it's holding at nearly 24,000 acres to the east in altadena. the eaton fire is 81% contained after burning more than 14,000 acres, 27 people have been confirmed dead. more than 13,000 structures are believed to have been destroyed. fire officials are investigating what caused the fires. there is another round of fire fueling santa ana winds expected tomorrow through tuesday. now, a number of bay area businesses are holding fundraisers and pop up events to support those affected by the devastation in los angeles, abc seven news reporter suzanne phon caught up with a few groups determined to help. a better one in el cerrito, the vino is flowing for a good cause.

>> every glass poured, every small bite served, every customer that shows up helps make a difference. 5% of all sales at the wine bar goes to world central kitchen to help fire victims in los angeles. >> we felt really compelled to join in whatever way we could. >> claire sullivan is the owner of banter wine. she says the devastating fires hit home. sullivan's husband lost his family home during the tubbs fire in santa rosa. >> my partner's house, parents house in santa rosa burned down in the 2017 fires. um, and so just after seeing kind of how widespread these fires down south have been, um, felt motivated in the small way that we can to contribute. it was it was incredible, really. >> at octavia restaurant in san francisco, a long line wrapped around the building saturday morning. we had a potato galette. >> we had, uh, a monkey bread that was like cheese. and, uh, we had a lemon. lemon tart in return for a donation, customers got a pastry. >> we had about 700 pastries

going into the day. >> uh, and we sold out in, like, an hour and a half, i think like that really shows. just like the power of community. >> robert wright is the owner of octavia restaurant. he says a large part of the proceeds will go to fire victims in los angeles. >> i'm from santa rosa, and i remember the tubbs fire in 2017. you know, basically leveled that entire town. so i know it takes a lot of help from within and from without to, uh, help, uh, community recover. >> restaurant along san francisco's embarcadero is donating proceeds from the sales of every steak through the end of the month. soma's restaurant is holding a fundraiser this coming thursday. it's a family style crab dinner feed at black jet baking company in san francisco. proceeds from their special coconut i love la cake will go to restaurants, care to support food and beverage workers affected by the wildfires. bay area bars, restaurants, bakeries they're all hoping to help make a difference. northern california sending love and support to

southern california. i think every little bit helps and we all should chip in in san francisco, suzannephan, abc7 news oakland ers are down in altadena showing support for those impacted by the southern california wildfires. >> a crew from oakland's urban compassion project distributed pet supplies to fire refugees. they went to a local hotel and a ymca with those donated supplies . and they're working with some other organizations and animal shelters to coordinate the distribution. if you'd like to support their efforts, you can donate pet supplies, water, and funds online to the urban compassion project and relief efforts are also happening on the slopes. this weekend. palisades tahoe is holding a special three day fundraiser for those impacted by the fires in southern california. the resort is selling lift tickets for $99 and donating 100% of sales to relief efforts. on top of that, palisades tahoe and its parent company are both matching the

kind of cute now. watch me go. >> a real bug's life two, now streaming on disney plus. >> welcome back. as time goes on, we're learning of more harrowing stories of people helping their neighbors during the tense minutes when flames were spreading in los angeles county. eyewitness news reporter leanne suter tells us about a group of firefighters that went above and beyond to help one family save their precious possessions. what? what? >> oh my god. let me see. oh my god! oh my god! mama >> tears of joy in the midst of heartbreaking loss for the gonzalez garza family, they returned to their altadena home to find it burned to the ground. the whole thing is gone. >> it's all gone. >> but then they spotted two blue coolers in the driveway full of family photos pulled

from their home. >> we started realizing somebody went in there in the chaos anddy found these photos and saved them for us. >> but it was joy because it brought all of a sudden all the loss was kind of filled in that moment with, with this joy of kindness, with kindness. we were thinking, who were the angels that were here? >> those angels and heroes. pasadena firefighters jonathan gonzalez and rich garcia getting hugs of gratitude from a grateful family. they were posted along east altadena drive for structure protection when they realized they couldn't stop the fire raging in the attic, they decided to do what they could as they raced out. >> knowing this house, there's nothing going to survive in this household and being able to pull something out. at least somepull memories, is the main thing that i focused on. >> those photos, irreplaceable of grandparents and parents from cuba and mexico. garcia and

gonzalez say it was gut wrenching to see home after home burn as the flames won the fight. >> i honestly wish we could have done a lot more with what what little time we had with how fast the fire was moving, how fast houses were going up. it was little that we could do for the family. >> it was more than they could have ever imagined and say they can't believe in the midst of the danger and chaos, two firefighters focused on an overwhelming act of kindness. >> hearing about the joy from the family. discovering those photos. and matters to me. >> back here at home, neighbors in the oakland hills are learning how to make their homes resilient to fire threats. a demonstration was put on by a montclair neighborhood firewise group. with the help of some experts and local fire officials, they taught around 20 people about home hardening and how to create defensible space

around their houses. >> i think the la fires just touched the heart of every single californian, because we live with that fear all the time. i think it's really important that people remember that it can happen to you and it could happen tomorrow. so be educated and be ready. >> they also explained how residents can make changes to their homes with more fire resistant materials. well, the wildfires in los angeles are raising questions about san francisco's readiness when it comes to an emergency. now, the city says it is ready to respond to a disaster. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard was at a unique event to get a look at the fire department's innovative technology and water supply. >> water power on display along san francisco's embarcadero, the san francisco fire department showing off its unique firefighting tools like the saint francis fire boat, essentially a floating fire

hydrant on the bay. >> imagine a fire under that pier. this can the fire boat can get in really close and extinguish fires in pier areas. >> new fire chief dean crispin giving mayor daniel lurie a tour outside fireboat station 35 and a demonstration of the city's high pressure fire hydrant system. it's no coincidence that this demo drill is happening in the wake of the southern california wildfire disaster. many locals are asking, how ready is san francisco? >> i'm getting this question a lot in our first ten days in office. >> lurie believes the city is ready. >> we have a fully staffed fire department. we have over 200 cisterns, including new ones on the west side. >> in an emergency, the city has an unlimited water supply from the bay using submersible pumps. >> right now you're seeing a essentially fire engine in the water, pumping water to the fire tender hose tender. >> this hose tender truck is new for the department. it can pump 5500 gallons of water per minute

versus a typical fire engine, which pumps 1500 gallons. >> we're very lucky. we have a primary water supply, which is essentially our domestic water supply. those are the white hydrants that you see in almost on every corner in san francisco. we have a secondary water supply which is specifically used for firefighting. >> after two very stressful weeks, we decided to come here to stay with our friends. >> elaine zang and her family are visiting from west l.a. luckily, they didn't evacuate their home, but she was very surprised to see this fire drill demo happening. >> i think that's the right thing to do. that's what we need. i hope la has prepared better for the wildfires we had. >> the mayor says real time drills like this are happening every weekend across the city. >> and so we will be vigilant. we will stay on top of it. that's my commitment to the people of san francisco. we have to keep them as safe as possible. >> in san francisco. cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> san jose police have arrested a man in connection to setting fires in the baton rouge

neighborhood. police say the fires were reported just before 11 saturday morning near capitol avenue and marbury road. officers and fire crews were able to put out the flames, and there have been no reported injuries at this time. a company will pay out a massive settlement in the hunters point shipyard. environmental lawsuit. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, tetra tech ec will pay $97 million to the federal government. the shipyard was once a cleanup site for ships exposed to atomic weapons for research into the effects of radiation. the government joined whistleblower cases alleging the company misrepresented soil samples and falsified data. authorities are monitoring the air quality in the monterey area after a battery facility caught fire. in an update yesterday, they say they are checking for hydrogen fluoride and other particulates near moss landing and thankfully have not found any risks. they're also

reporting the flames to be out and are hopeful they don't reignite at this time. the epa says it does not believe water quality has been impacted. the investigation into what caused the fire is still ongoing. in the east bay now, an official changing of the political guard on which i am about to enter, of which i am about to enter. >> so help me god. so help me god. congresswoman lateefah simon and her mother, former longtime congresswoman barbara lee, passing the torch to the east bay's new representative, lateefah simon. >> a community swearing in event was held at the grand lake theater in oakland. simon was sworn in by vice president kamala harris on january 7th in washington, dc. simon replaces barbara lee in representing california's 12th congressional district. and while lee might be done in washington, she's

already after her next possible job. last week, she officially announced she is running for oakland mayor, with xiang tao being recalled in november. a special election will be held in april. lauren taylor, who narrowly lost to tao in 2022, has also entered the race. all right, switching gears to the forecast now, it is chilly. we're tracking all that fog across the bay area and in southern california. major concern about the santa ana winds. >> that's right. they're coming back tomorrow into tuesday already turning offshore into later today. and so they're going to accelerate with the speed. and we have several red flag warnings in effect for some of that erratic and extreme fire danger in southern california. back home we're looking at live doppler seven as high pressure builds in. this is a dominant area of high pressure. you can see where it takes over the entire west coast and is being pushed up into alaska there. and then we're going to see a cold area of low pressure drop down the side of it. and that sets up the

pressure gradient once again. our red flag warning for north northeasterly winds 25 to 35 miles an hour. 10:00 on monday through 10 p.m. on tuesday for ventura county, los angeles. again. relative humidity, bone dry. 0 to 4% and some of the wind gusts could be in excess of 80 miles an hour. so already clocking the winds. this is going to happen quickly throughout the afternoon, 40 to 50 miles an hour by the afternoon on monday, you can see the purples there and the winds still stay elevated up towards 40 miles an hour. on tuesday. they are still high by wednesday and still offshore, even though they will become lighter as we get into the rest of the workweek. and no rain, maybe rain late in the week next weekend, but it doesn't look like a good shot for southern california. 47 in oakland, 46 in san jose. look how chilly. 39 in redwood city and at the beach just upper 40s here. temperatures were at or below freezing in a couple

of areas this morning in our east bay. also the north bay, still 30s from santa rosa to petaluma. and the fog is such an issue out there in concord. can't see anything as well as napa and novato. quarter mile, santa rosa. look at hayward, just over two miles, palo alto a half mile, and san jose. so we've got a big lid of high pressure pushing down on the atmosphere, and temperatures are warmer. it is 51 on top of mount tam. and so you get that colder, denser air at the surface. the warmer air above that weak january sun is going to take some time for that fog to burn off. so it's foggy. it's chilly. we've got some sun, hazy sun on the way, and because of that high pressure, not a lot of mixing. and so it will look like moderate air quality at times. and it is. we will wait for the winds on monday to mix out the atmosphere, but that comes with some pretty good gusts that already have been allowed to be under a wind advisory for tomorrow, and then sunny and milder as we get towards the rest of the week. here is what the

national service weather service has posted through tomorrow, with wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour for the hills of the north bay, you can see down towards saint helena. and as we clock those winds, you'll notice the direction coming from the northwest. they're light today. then they turn northerly and then into monday. they're offshore out of the east, and they pick up in speed 30 to 40 miles an hour. and then by late in the afternoon they'll begin to calm down. same event that's going to be hitting southern california, but much, much less for us here in the north bay. so 5 to 7 foot waves for a beach hazard statement through tomorrow night. and a look at the mild weather ahead ie south bay. look at this mid and upper 60s. so once again as that system fades away by monday into tuesday after the holiday, temperatures really climb not only in the south bay, but we will be much warmer above average for the rest of the bay as well. so today, the coolest day that we'll see for a while with upper 50s hazy afternoon sun in oakland. same deal in palo alto with perhaps low 60s in

washington, d.c. last night, accompanied by his wife melania and son barron trump. abc news reporter perry rossum has the latest heightened security in the nation's capital, as donald trump returns to washington and prepares to be sworn in for his second term, the president elect kicking off a weekend of events last night with a fireworks show at his golf club in sterling, virginia. >> trump telling abc's rachel scott his inaugural address will be about unity, strength and fairness. on his final day before taking office, trump participating in a ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier at arlington national cemetery. tonight, he will have a campaign style rally at the capital one arena in downtown washington. workers are busy building a stage inside the capitol rotunda after the decision was made to move monday's inaugural events indoors, trump, citing an arctic blast sweeping the country. trump writing online i don't want to see people hurt or injured in any way. therefore, i have ordered the inaugural address. in addition to prayers and other speeches to be delivered in the united states

capitol rotunda, the massive outdoor platform where the oath is normally taken can hold more than 1000 people. the rotund can only hold about 600 guests. president biden, members of congress and other notable guests will be there, but the vast majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person. the swearing in ceremony was last moved indoors 40 years ago, so help me god. when president reagan was sworn in for a second term, according to trump's post , the capital one arena will be open tomorrow for what he's calling live viewing of this historic event. the arena will also host a presidential parade. trump says he will join the crowd there after he is sworn in. as for trump's priorities, once he does take office, he says immigration will be a large focus with executive actions being taken on day one and through the first 100 days. perry russell, abc news, capitol hill well, as trump steps in, the irs commissioner is stepping down. >> danny werfel says he'll resign after the inauguration tomorrow. he has three years

remaining of his five year term, but he would likely be fired. trump already picked out former republican representative billy long to lead the tax agency. if long gets confirmed, he'll finish out the same term ending in 2027. werfel said this was the best way to support a success transition. we of course , we'll have live team coverage of the inauguration tomorrow starting at 6 a.m. right here on abc seven. well, hundreds turned out for the people's march here in san francisco rally goers gathering at 24th and bryant streets. then they marched to dolores park, where they briefly blocked an intersection. organizers billed it as a day to support progressive rights with a focus on immigration, the economy and women's rights, and other personal freedoms. >> it becomes frustrating waiting for people to see where we've been going as a country and getting together, getting

side of it, and that's going to allow for tight pressure gradient. the tug between the two, allowing for some very gusty winds here arriving in the upper elevations tomorrow. southern california will get particularly hard hit with the red flag warning and winds that could be upwards of 50 and 60 miles an hour and low relative humidity. you can see the fog there from san jose. it is 47. san francisco and oakland 46 for you here at the shark tank. so temperatures really not moving. we've got a lot of cloud cover and it has been cold out there with the skies clear early on and the fog moved in and we have that inversion. so looking at these 30s, santa rosa and napa with 38 in livermore and the dense fog with us from the peninsula to the south bay half mile visibility there. and look at how reduced the visibility is from napa to novato. hayward just over two miles. and we'll look for this to lift by about 12 1:00. and then looking at a

cool afternoon, so dense fog in spots, chilly conditions, windy conditions in the upper elevations, particularly the north bay. tomorrow. then we get into a warm up after that with temperatures climbing through the 60s for the middle of the week and even the end of the week. here's our wind advisory 4:00 monday morning through 1 a.m. on tuesday. so very gusty winds here from saint helena and the upper elevations of mount tam. the diablo range. so very calm northwesterly winds to start out today. and then they turn northerly late tonight and then their easterly and that's that offshore flow up to 30 miles an hour. 7:00 in the morning. gusty at the coast as well. look at that. 33 mile an hour wind gusts right throughout the early to middle of the afternoon. we'll definitely feel the winds throughout oakland, san francisco, even hayward. and then by late in the evening, the winds lighten up. but it's really a dry setup. we need rain. we're not as as in bad
