stirring controversy tonight. >> starting today, america will be stronger and greater than it's ever been before. >> from the parties to the protests and the policies that will impact the bay area. our team coverage of the second inauguration of donald trump begins now. >> and good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we have a lot to get to tonight, of course, but we're going to begin with the scene in washington, d.c, as people arrested for the january 6th attack on the capitol begin to be released. >> new at 11, a crowd is gathering outside of the d.c. jail tonight, anticipating the release of some convicted with crimes related to the january 6th capitol riot. in one of his most controversial day one decisions, president trump is pardoning nearly all of them. and tonight, the white house says the first two are free. >> we hope they get them. we hope they come out tonight. frankly, they're expecting it. >> in this sweeping executive order, trump pardoned or commuted the prison sentences of

more than 1500 people. this includes people convicted of violently assaulting police officers. trump is also having the attorney general look into getting charges dismissed for 450 defendants, with cases still pending. >> this all could impact several people from the bay area, allegedly at the january 6th attacks. daniel goldwyn was charged with entering and remaining in a restricted building. frank giorgi junior was arrested just a week ago, and evan newman, who was charged with assaulting officers, is currently in belarus. on the phone with abc seven news tonight, he says he regrets being at the capitol that day and is not yet sure what his next legal steps are. >> local lawmakers who investigated the attack are sharing shock and disgust about this tonight. east bay representative eric swalwell compared trump to the joker. south bay representative zoe lofgren said, quote, that trump's january 6th pardons extend to some of the worst, most violent criminals that day is truly horrible. lufkin received a pardon herself today.

one of the last issued by now former president biden. she, along with california senator adam schiff, received preemptive pardons for their role on the house committee that investigated the capitol attack. the committee said that they were pardoned, quote, not for breaking the law, but for upholding it. >> and we will get to the new president's other executive orders and their impact on the bay area in just a moment. the president is still celebrating tonight, attending three post-inauguration balls held across d.c. i've had no higher privilege in life than to serve as your commander in chief, not once, but twice. >> weather moved all of today's events indoors, from the swearing in inside the capitol rotunda to a rally at capital one arena and a series of signings in the oval office. >> and the tech industry was front and center at these events today. a who's who of tech leaders, from elon musk to mark zuckerberg and the head of tiktok in the room in the capitol for the inauguration. abc seven news reporter lauren

martinez looks at the impact of that display and the celebrations in silicon valley. hi. >> this group of republicans in san jose are celebrating. on monday evening, the village's republican club hosted an inauguration watch party. the club is a 55 and older community. >> we're older, but we're very vibrant, very enthusiastic and hopeful for a really good four years. >> one part of the inauguration taking center stage, or at least close to it, were tech leaders in attendance, including apple ceo tim ■cook and sitting shoulder to shoulder mark zuckerberg, jeff bezos, google ceo sundar pichai and elon musk. >> well, i think it says that they really support him, and that's important because silicon valley is a titan. >> it's unclear what elon musk's role will be. sources say musk is said to have a blue badge, basically an all access pass. he

reportedly has office space in a complex next door to the white house, and sources tell abc news musk is also likely to get a west wing office space. we spoke with former chairman of the santa clara county republican party, currently in d.c. that did not go unnoticed. >> i heard people uh- with the group that i was with not, you know, not many of them are from silicon valley, but they know the importance of technology to our strength as a country and to our future. >> shayne patrick connolly said even where they sat on the dais just behind the trump family, represented an important message of coming together. >> inaugurations are for all of us as americans. they represent good things about america. when we can come together and celebrate the transition from one president to the next. and i think that's important to the creative sector that technology is. >> even though patrick connolly's trip has been cold, it's been a memorable one.

>> well, it was exciting to be here for this moment in history, a unique time. and i think this time he really hits the ground running. he knows how the system works in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> the president signed dozens of executive actions today, including many sweeping policies that may impact life here in california. his actions on climate change removed the u.s. from a worldwide treaty and doubled down on fossil fuels. he signed an order saying the federal government would only recognize two sexes, male and female. a decision with wide reaching implications for transgender people. and he moved to leave the world health organization, something he set out to do in 2020. another order delays enforcement of a law banning tiktok. trump still wants bytedance to sell tiktok to an american company, he says. tonight, 75 day reprieve will give tiktok more time to find a buyer. last year, then president biden signed legislation passed by congress that banned tiktok because of national security concerns. the law briefly went

into effect over the weekend, causing tiktok to go dark for several hours. >> tonight, the aclu is suing in response to another of president trump's executive orders aimed at ending birthright citizenship. that's the current policy. that means anyone born in the u.s. is automatically a citizen, regardless of their parents immigration status. the aclu argues trump's order violates the 14th amendment, and california attorney general rob bonta agrees and has planned a news conference for tomorrow morning. just in town south bay activists held a protest in response to the new trump administration plans to overhaul immigration policy and enforcement. trump also signed orders declaring a national emergency on the u. s. mexico border and suspending refugee resettlement. >> we are deeply concerned about the deportation policies and impact they have on our immigrant families, like the ones we serve here in east san jose and beyond. these policies

strip away the dignity and humanity of those who seek safety and opportunity in our country. >> the san jose city council plans to vote next month on whether to strengthen protections for immigrant families threatened by deportation. >> trump is entering office at a time of tension and hope in the middle east. the cease fire deal between israel and hamas has just begun. tonight, family members of people held hostage by hamas stood behind the president during his remarks at capital one arena. in that same event, trump adviser elon musk raised eyebrows for a gesture some are comparing to a nazi salute. abc seven news reporter tim johns explains this one really mattered. >> elon musk setting off a firestorm monday after the world's richest man made a gesture during a post-inauguration rally. musk, who made the gesture twice, is facing heavy criticism after many online compared his arm movement to a nazi salute. >> well, it certainly looked bad. i can't speculate to what his intent was, and i think it's

important to separate intent versus impact here. >> tyler gregory is the ceo of the jewish community relations council in san francisco. he believes it's critically important for musk to clarify his actions. >> it looks really bad to a lot of us in the jewish community, and it was being celebrated by white nationalist groups. >> musk pushed back later monday on x, calling the criticism dirty tricks. all of this comes at a time of heightened anxiety for many in the jewish community, since israel's war with hamas began in october of 2023, there's been an exponential rise in anti-semitic incidents both around the country and here in the bay area. we have seen graffiti and fliers proclaiming kill the jews and hitler was right. deputy director for the american jewish committee, theresa drenik says while anti-semitism began rising during the first trump administration, the recent rise is unlike anything we've seen in decades. drenik says it's up to everyone to stand up to anti-semitism, whether it's coming from the far left or the

jail, accused of vehicular manslaughter in last night's crash. right off. 281 man and a dog died in the collision at sixth and harrison. >> it was just terrible, obviously. and tonight investigators are placing the blame on the driver in a black tesla and questioning whether they were involved in another crash just moments before. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has new details now from the scene of the crash. >> and all of a sudden i hear, like, sounds of, like, explosions. like i thought we were getting bombs dropped on us. >> hockey stars describing this multi vehicle accident scene at six in harrison in san francisco

on sunday night. one person and their dog died. >> there's like like seven cars involved. there was injuries. but after the first impact it was multiple like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. like it was unbelievable. so like i was like, what the heck is going on? so i immediately ran outside, came outside and came right around the corner and saw the devastation. >> star took this video of that devastation showing the wrecked cars as emergency crews were arriving. >> i saw all the cars and just smoke starting, starting to come out of the cars and i heard moans and screams and crying coming out of the cars. >> monday night i was at the accident scene where all of this went down. the wife of the man who died was there as well and in tears over what happened. a waymo vehicle waiting at the stoplight was hit from behind and had extensive damage. the car that caused the chain reaction crash was reportedly going 98mph. police have not

confirmed that speed, but witnesses reacted for the noise to be that loud. >> the car must have been traveling, you know, close to 90 or 100 miles an hour. >> jail records show that a person is being held on a vehicular manslaughter charge. also, chp says they responded to a hit and run accident on 280 just prior to the crash here. while that second case hasn't been officially linked. both incidents involve a black tesla in san francisco. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> dangerous conditions are sweeping through southern california tonight through tomorrow morning. strong winds are returning for a large portion of los angeles and ventura counties with very low humidity. there were two close calls today with fires that were quickly put out by fire crews. one was in griffith park, the other in san diego. l.a. county will be under a red flag warning for extreme fire danger until 2 p.m. tomorrow. >> tonight, there was a community meeting for people concerned about the battery

storage facility fire at the moss landing power plant. it broke out thursday, burning through the night ferociously before flaring up again on friday. people living nearby were told to shelter in place because of concerns about air quality. the flames and smoke died down over the weekend. the environmental protection agency has also been monitoring the air quality. they say they have not detected any serious health risks, but the community remains concerned about the effects. >> we wanted to know if there are any groups focus on the ocean issue, marine issues, fishing. you know, we need to remember the livelihood of our fishermen that live in this area. and ecological areas. we've got the slough. we've got marine wildlife. >> county leaders plan to meet tomorrow to ratify the local state of emergency. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> in the east bay, contra costa fire unveiled a new fire engine designed to better protect firefighters. it's a retrofitted 23 year old fire engine. it now

has a device on the back to absorb the impact of a crash. improved lighting and other features. this is the first of what could be several modified trucks deployed to high traffic areas in the county. last spring, there were two crashes involving fire trucks in one day. multiple firefighters were hurt, lift every voice and in the north bay a celebration of doctor martin luther king jr. >> s life and legacy for the 27th year. hundreds of people gathered in marin city hoping to empower a new generation of change makers. on this mlk junior day in san francisco, thousands marched from the caltrain station to yerba buena gardens. >> the 1.5 mile journey crossed the lefty o'doul bridge and stopped at willie mays plaza to commemorate the crossing of the edmund pettus bridge in selma, alabama. >> the history and legacy of doctor king about loving one another to be non-confrontational and be at

peace and just love each person and find that love in each person. that's what we all need. and that's why i'm here. >> new s.f. mayor daniel lowery attended mlk labor and community breakfast this morning. the city's official mlk day events always begin with the annual breakfast at yerba buena gardens. >> all right, let's move on now to the weather forecast. of course, watching what's happening here and real concern about more wind picking up in southern california. >> that's right. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is tracking it all for us. spencer. okay, ama and dan. >> we don't, thankfully, have fire weather conditions here in the bay area, but we have powerful wind gusts throughout the day because of this alignment you see here on the satellite radar image. but those winds have diminished considerably. we had a wind advisory in effect for most of the day. it expired about an hour and a half ago. so right now we're looking at wind speeds generally under ten miles per hour all across the bay area. that's getting a little bit chilly out there right now. the 24 hour temperature change shows most locations several degrees cooler than they were this time last night, and it's going to

get even colder overnight. a frost advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow for the north bay interior valleys, the east bay valleys, and the santa clara valley and the eastern santa clara hills that will be in effect until 9 a.m. tomorrow. temperatures dropping as low as 31 degrees in the coldest spots. and of course, frost will form and may damage sensitive plants. right now we're looking at temperature readings of 52 here in san francisco, 48 at oakland, hayward 4344, san jose, 4341. redwood city at 43 and half moon bay looking down onto parts of san francisco from mount tam. a nice clear view at this hour. temperatures are in the 30s over much of the bay area right now. 37 santa rosa, mid 30s at petaluma, napa, fairfield, 43 at concord and 40 at livermore. let's check out our forecast headlines overnight. it will be cold again. once again. frost advisory in effect for parts of the bay area tomorrow. it will be sunny and mild with lighter wind than we had today and then wednesday through friday look for a nice warm up under sunny skies. temperatures will bounce up about four or 5 or 6 degrees from today's highs. overnight,

look for low temperatures of 30 at fairfield and just mid 30s in most of the remainder of our inland communities right around the bay shoreline. 37 fremont, 39 at san mateo, 40 at oakland. so it's going to be quite chilly. but then tomorrow afternoon, look for temperatures rising a little bit higher than they were this afternoon, mainly low to mid 60s, up to about 66 in san jose. but some locations in the inland east bay won't warm up much at all. we expect highs of only 57 in antioch, 59 at concord. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so on wednesday, temperatures continue rising a bit. thursday will be the warmest day in the seven day forecast period, with temperatures around the bay and inland around 66 degrees or even higher. not much change on friday. temperatures drop off a couple of degrees, but a sharp drop in temperatures will occur over the weekend. saturday we'll see high temperatures only in the mid 50s, both around the bay and in our inland
