tonight with the controversy over how oakland police pursue suspects. even the governor has called for them to be more aggressive with car chases. >> the pursuit policy has fueled multiple passionate town hall meetings. and tonight, it was the police chief's turn to weigh in. abc seven news reporter j.r stone explains the changes being considered. >> you felt that it's okay to have this level of crime and not to act, and your negligence of duty resulted in the governor stepping in and saying do something. >> anger among some at the oakland police commission meeting thursday night. the meeting comes just weeks after governor gavin newsom said that the california highway patrol would continue to partner with opd. but if pursuit restrictions don't loosen up and give oakland police more freedom, that could change. >> we're at a point, an inflection point in terms of the state support. this commitment from the state can't continue unless we see commensurate changes. >> oakland police chief floyd mitchell said the current

pursuit policy is 11 years old. the chief's proposed changes would allow for pursuits to go above 50mph, something currently against policy. officers would also now be allowed to chase suspected burglars and sideshow participants, but not everyone is on board. >> it may feel better to feel like you can chase the bad guys. it's dangerous for people who live in this city. it's dangerous for the city's budget. >> there's a lot of people over 60 like me, and these police pursuits put us at risk, and we will have no recourse if we're killed. >> at least one commissioner, though curious if the proposal addresses enough crimes being committed. >> i'm from east oakland. people are blowing through red lights, swerving their cars left and right. if you're also interested in pursuing sideshow activity, have you got have you put in any thought to, you know, potentially looking into those type of traffic infractions as well? >> i don't want anyone to

believe that what we are proposing, and what we are suggesting is to take the gloves off and we chase anything that moves. that's not what we're trying to do here. >> no vote on the proposed changes was taken at the meeting. the goal here focused on the discussion with an opportunity for everyone to talk about what is needed for future approval in oakland. j.r stone, abc seven news. >> also in the east bay. another chance for tonight for some of the finalists for alameda county's district attorney to make their case for the job. there are a total of seven. annie esposito, elgin lowe and jimmy wilson all work in bay area district attorney offices right now. latricia lewis and yibin shen both work as counsel for local governments. ursula jones dixon is a judge, and venus johnson works for the state attorney general. johnson, lewis and shen appeared at tonight's forum, put on by the alameda county district attorney accountability table. they were asked what they would do during

their first 100 days. >> is to ensure that we have the adequate staffing deployed so that we are reviewing cases so that they do not time out before the statute of limitations. >> so much is driven by budget, the way that the budget is structured in the county. it determines what positions are available. you know, how many positions that you have available and what classifications. >> so, you know, we have just a few weeks to get a budget together. but what a budget does, it not only sets your priorities, but it also gives the community a directive and an understanding of where your investments will be. and what do those relationships and budgetary line items look like. >> the alameda county board of supervisors is expected to make a final decision on the da job next week. >> new at 11, an end to a three year old murder case. but it didn't go the way the victim's family had hoped. the contra

costa district attorney is not charging the mother of the man suspected of killing alexis gabe. gabe was last seen leaving her ex-boyfriend's antioch home in 2022. gabe's ex was killed by u.s. marshals trying to arrest him. prosecutors just closed the investigation into his mother, finding there wasn't enough evidence to charge her with being an accessory after the crime. gabe's family is furious. >> yeah, like the first couple of years was tough. and then it's gotten it's gotten better. but today. today. what happened today was. >> alexis. gabe's remains were found in the months after her disappearance. her family is holding a day of kindness in her hometown of oakley this weekend. >> in southern california. firefighters are gaining some ground tonight on the hughes fire. that's the one that broke out yesterday morning and spread so quickly despite being under a red flag warning with windy

conditions, containment is now at 36%. the fire has burned more than 10,000 acres, and tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders. so far, the flames have not damaged or destroyed any buildings. remarkably, the red flag warning remains in effect until tomorrow morning. and of course, the weather is a key component in what's happening there. and let's go to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. obviously, we've been watching these dangerous conditions unfold down south for weeks now. southern california going to get a break anytime soon. >> they will indeed, dan, and that will begin tomorrow afternoon. so encouraging news. but right now that hughes fire is still up there. over 10,000 acres, 36% contained, and it is still very dry there. and gusty northeasterly winds to 39 miles an hour. that's the gusts. relative humidity is 7% as we take a look here. red flag warnings going until 10 a.m. tomorrow. so we are looking at gusty winds, low humidity, critical fire weather conditions, continuing for several more hours. browns

canyon 45 mile an hour wind gusts right now. camp 939. as you will notice, those winds will remain high until after 10 a.m. then they start to drop off. one of the biggest issues with southern california has been the fact that the drought has intensified. it has expanded now a third of the state, which is focused a lot of it on southern california, is in severe and extreme drought here in the bay area, parts of the south bay now in abnormally dry. it was only the inland east bay. i do have some good news to share with you. we do have some rain coming to parts of california and snow to the sierra. i'll be back with a closer look at the timeline, plus a look at that developing system on live doppler 7 a.m. >> all right, we'll see you in a bit. thank you. sandhya. president trump will be touring the damage from the los angeles wildfires tomorrow. governor newsom says he hasn't spoken to trump since he left office in 2021, but will be waiting to greet him. earlier today, the governor signed a $2.5 billion fire relief package. it will help pay for the cleanup and

provide shelter for those who lost their homes. the state expects to get reimbursed for the costs, although some lawmakers in washington have suggested withholding funds or attaching conditions. >> and one of the president's first moves in office this week was to end a range of policies protecting the rights of lgbtq people. it's already having an impact on bay area organizations supporting that community. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains the surge in calls for help and how they're changing their approach. >> one executive order after the next president donald trump, taking aim at the lgbtq plus community. >> as of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the united states government that there are only two genders, male and female. >> his cabinet also taking action thursday. secretary of state marco rubio directing the state department to halt passport applications, with x selected as their gender marker. the move undoing the biden

administration's efforts to be more inclusive of gender identities. >> as things are evolving, we recognize that the very first thing that we have to do is ensure that our doors stay open. >> leyla chavez is the executive director of lyric, the san francisco based nonprofit has been providing services to transgender youth for decades, and they say the city and county departments, schools and nonprofits are banding together. >> if you have a young person at a school or at another place to for them to know that they can come to lyric for services and vice versa, that we can send somebody from our programing for legal support or housing support. >> what we're really hearing from our callers and our community is just a sense of fear, a raw sense of fear, of what's to come. >> brad becker is the founder and president of the lgbt national help center. its national hotline saw 700% surge in calls after the november election. >> for the first time in our history, we blew a fuze. you know, when the day after the

election, we overloaded in our capacity to answer calls. >> the organization extending its hours and bringing in more volunteers in preparation for trump's second term. >> it does feel different, and i think it's because it feels like the trump administration is much more organized now. they've been through this before. >> nevertheless, he says they too have been here before. >> we have a very long history of being up against some very tough odds, and we've come through every time and we will again. but it's going to be a long four years. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the san francisco couple behind an ai company is under federal indictment tonight accused of dozens of charges, including fraud and identity theft. prosecutors say they went to elaborate lengths to hide how unprofitable their company was, and then used investor money for personal gain. alexander beckman is the founder and former ceo of game on, an ai chatbot company that touted deals with professional sports teams and

luxury brands. over six years, gorman raised more than $60 million from investors. the indictment says beckman and his wife, valerie, used at least 4 million of that to buy homes in san francisco, pay for private schools and even their wedding venue. beckman is accused of lying to investors about their revenue and customers, even faking bank statements and emails of real people to carry out the ruse. >> all right. moving on now. in just over three weeks, the best nba players in the world will be in san francisco for the all star game. and warriors fans will get a chance to see one of their favorites at chase center. the sports director, larry beil, is here. this is really exciting. fun to have him in town. >> well, absolutely. and you know, steph curry is going to be basically the unofficial host of all star weekend. with all the stars descending on san francisco. and today we learned that curry will in fact be starting in that all star game at chase center for the western conference. this will be curry's 11th all star selection, and that in itself sets a franchise

are three potential designs for a garden that the public is able to view and give its feedback. half moon bay has not set a timeline for the memorial because it still needs to secure the funding. >> it's upsetting the members of our community actually forgot what happened two years ago. many, many of us are still dealing with this. >> they want to see a place that honors the farm worker contribution and legacy on the coast. they want to make sure that the place provides an option for folks to reflect a place that is calm, that is also interactive. >> the designs range in cost from 500,000 to $3 million. >> one week after that huge fire in moss landing at the battery plant there. a lawmaker is introducing a bill to limit where new battery facilities are built. the fire raised concerns about the risk to the environment and people living nearby. the bill would give local officials and communities more say on whether to accept a battery plant in their

community, and it would put parameters on those locations. >> in san francisco's richmond neighborhood, there are several newly painted red curbs, but the city says it didn't do it. it's upsetting for residents in an area with already sparse parking spaces, not to mention the new day lighting law preventing parking 20ft from any crosswalk. but the city says many of these red curbs are fake and too long. >> i really hope they can figure out who's actually doing this and why would they do it? >> it's extremely inappropriate, and i don't think it's acceptable to do such things. i hope it's illegal. it's already extremely hard to park in san francisco. there is no public parking in neighborhoods. >> city crews are repainting the curbs so they are the correct length. >> tonight we have a breakthrough to share with you in our ongoing effort to build a better bay area. the south bay is celebrating a new apartment complex dedicated to supporting young people. it's really a critical gap. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has

more from advocates who hope that today's move in day is the first of many. >> remember your first apartment? you might have felt excited or nervous. nine young adults transitioning out of the foster system are moving into their new apartments in downtown san jose. on thursday, an open house was held at the roosevelt park apartments. giselle duran said when she first entered the foster care system, she never imagined her own space. >> this whole transition has been so smooth and yeah, it's just feel really good. >> the 22 year old said the apartment is not just a place to live, it's a launching pad into her future. >> i was worried about housing. i was just felt like i outgrew the living with roommates situation. >> the nonprofit first place for youth partnered with first community housing to make this possible. first place for youth was founded 26 years ago in oakland. they're now located throughout the state and have expanded to eight other states. they help with housing and support services. >> there's foster youth everywhere around us. we just

don't know. it's one of the most invisible issues that we need to make more visible. >> ceo thomas lee said these young people will be able to stay at these affordable housing units for as long as they need. >> you have to think about this for a second. for someone to be in foster care after age 18, that means a lot of things did not line up perfectly for them. >> in santa clara county, there was a lack of specialized foster housing group homes for children needing extra support closed in 2017, but now they can't always find placements with families, forcing them to stay at transitional sites. in november, a county commission issued an urgent call to action. in response, the department of family and children's services sent us this statement, saying in part. dfcs has added additional positions to support the transitional homes and activated overtime and supplemental staffing to ensure we have appropriate staffing at all times. lee hopes the roosevelt park apartments inspire other private and public collaborations to make more

had 100th of an inch. that's how far behind we are as we check out what's happening. high pressure, unfortunately, has been blocking the storms, but there is a system that is developing to our north. it's going to drop down and it is going to bring about some change. so let's take a look at live doppler seven. there is some cloud cover and fog just off the coastline that is going to start to close in as we head towards tomorrow. so the numbers right now in the 30s to the 50s. a live view from our mount tam cam. you can see a little haze in the atmosphere. tomorrow cloudier. temperatures drop this weekend. possibility of showers. and then we also have a gusty pattern setting up for the weekend. strongest winds in the hills. it is certainly going to continue to cool. so let's start out with tomorrow morning. it's not going to be quite as chilly as it has been the last couple of mornings. the clouds will insulate us mid 30s to upper 40s to start the day in the afternoon, you'll notice that the sun is dimmed by the extra cloud cover and those temperatures do come down upper 50s to the upper 60s. we do have

a wind advisory that goes up 10:00 tomorrow night for the north bay hills until 10 a.m. sunday. northeasterly north northeasterly winds will be gusting up to 50 miles an hour, which means there is potential for a few power outages or downed tree limbs, so keep that in mind. the winds start to ramp up. this is the north bay hills saturday morning, briefly dropping off and then picking right back up late saturday night going into sunday. and that's because there's a trough that's going to be digging southward, coming in from the north. and this computer model is showing you what's going to happen. it starts to bring in rain and snow to much of california. i'm going to zoom in on our local area to show you what's going to happen for your weekend. 11 a.m. spotty showers show up in the north bay. 2:00 in the afternoon. very scattered. now, keep in mind the computer model has had a hard time flip flopping between wet and dry, wet and dry. that's why we don't have the storm impact scale on yet. potential is there for some snow over mount hamilton saturday night. and then here comes the last round

of potential showers early sunday morning before this is done. it certainly will be delivering rainfall across our region. if it does pan pan out up to a few hundredths to 1000/500 of an inch, it's going to soak southern california, which they need with the wildfires. but unfortunately there is the risk of mudslides there in the recent burn scar areas. here's your accuweather seven day forecast. cooler clouds up tomorrow. the cooling continues into the weekend. shower chance between saturday and early sunday and it will be gusty. you certainly will need to start to bring out the layers for the weekend. and then early next week we go back to dry and kind of sunny. the pattern that we were in for much, much of this month, but not for long. thursday looks like a chance of rain and beyond next thursday. it's starting to trend
