with fans from all four teams, buffalo bills mafia, kansas city chiefs kingdom, philadelphia eagles, and the washington commanders. some of them had to play in the blistering cold and snow. but ginger is standing by with if they'll finally get some relief this weekend. >> george: that is all coming up. we begin with the first wave of the u.s. troops arriving at the southern border part of president trump's plan to crack down on immigration. chief white house correspondent mary bruce starts us off. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. immigration was central to president trump's campaign. and this morning his administration is eager to show he is following through, signing a flurry of orders sending troops to the southern border and highlighting ice raids. along the southern border this morning, signs of president trump's long promised crackdown on immigration. as the 1,500 troops sent to the border begin their new mission. the white house now saying military deportation flights have begun. marines from california's camp pendleton at the border wall with heavy trucks and wire.

abc's matt rivers on the scene for their arrival. >> reporter: right there. part of the very first step of the u.s. military being deployed down here. those taking off from camp pendleton making their way to the u.s./mexico border. >> reporter: the troops to address what trump declared a national emergency. >> what exactly do you want them to be doing right now? >> making sure that the border is safe and secure, and that criminals don't come into our country. >> reporter: the surge in forces comes as the situation on the border has improved steadily since former president biden announced new asylum decisions last spring. encounters down 60%. immigration a top issue in trump's campaign. the white house now eager to show they're delivering. across the country in major cities like boston, new york and newark, some communities rattled by ice raids. the new york mayor saying he will not stand by while people are being unlawfully terror aids.

trump has promised the largest mass deportation in american history. sources tell abc news these appear to be routine immigration raids that have been customary for years. trump has also signed an executive order to end birth right citizenship, even though it's protected by the 14th amendment. >> that's a good one. birth right. that's a big one. >> reporter: but yesterday a federal judge in washington temporarily halted the order. the judge, appointed by president reagan, calling it blatantly unconstitutional. >> obviously, we'll appeal. they put it before a certain judge in seattle, i guess, right? there's no surprises with that judge. >> reporter: the trump immigration agenda is getting a boost from congress. they passed the laken riley act, which will require federal officials to detain migrants with past violent crimes, named after the 22-year-old georgia nursing student killed by an undocumented migrant. it is now headed to

the president's desk. it is said to be the first piece of legislation he signs in his second term, george. >> george: the president also said he's going to release any remaining files on the kennedy and martin luther king assassinations? >> reporter: the president yesterday signing an executive order to declassify all of the records related to these three assassinations that gripped the nation. president jfk, his brother, senator robert kennedy and martin luther king jr. the president saying, quote, their families and the american people deserve transparency and truth. the director of national intelligence has just a few weeks to review and declassify this material, george. >> george: thank you very much. rebecca? >> rebecca: george, thank you. now the latest on president trump's nominee for defense secretary, pete hegseth. republican senators are nearly all united as he faces a confirmation vote tonight. our senior political correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill with more. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. pete hegseth is expected to be confirmed by the senate to become the next defense secretary. in the final hour, two

republican senators made it clear they will not be supporting his nomination. this morning president donald trump's embattled nominee for defense secretary inching closer to confirmation. >> the motion passes. >> reporter: former fox news host pete hegseth, set to face his final confirmation vote late tonight, after narrowly surviving a key test vote. but two republicans joining every democrat to vote against him. republican senator lisa murkowski and susan collins said hegseth's limited experience and personal conduct make them not support him. murkowski writing his lack of judgment is unbecoming of someone who would lead our armed forces. in particular, the four term republican pointing to his admitted infidelity and allegations of drinking and sexual assault, both of which he denies. sources now confirming hegseth paid $50,000 to a woman who accused him of sexual assault in 2017 as part of a settlement agreement. hegseth denies he assaulted her saying it was consensual and he only agreed to the settlement

because he feared the accusation would hurt his career. >> mr. hegseth has denied it all. >> i've known pete a long time. he'll do a great job. >> reporter: another issue, his views on women in combat roles. >> i'm just saying we should not have women in combat roles. >> reporter: the army veteran later walking that back, saying he opposes quotas for minorities serving in certain roles, which the pentagon makes clear does not exist. >> i am quoting you. i'm quoting you. i'm quoting you from the podcast. women shouldn't be in combat at all. >> reporter: senator collins now writing, i am not convinced that his position on women serving in combat roles has changed. president trump brushing off the opposition. >> no surprises there. too bad. that's the way it is. too bad. >> reporter: hegseth can only afford to lose three republican senators. murkowski and collins make two. we'll also be watching mitch mcconnell. he could be a wild card in all of this.

but either way, republican leadership is confidence he has the votes. >> george: perhaps this should go in the notes but a republican member of congress introduced a resolution to amend the constitution so president trump can run for a third term? >> reporter: yes. this is coming from congressman andy ogles of tennessee. he is proposing the united states amend the constitution to allow presidents who are serving nonconsecutive terms to run and be elected for a third term. to be clear, this is considered a long shot here. would have to be passed by both chambers with a two-thirds vote. would also need to be ratified by 38 states. it is notable that this is coming from a republican who is deeply loyal to president trump, george. >> george: okay, rachel. thank you very much. >> linsey: now the wild fires in southern california. high winds are fueling the flames with a new threat of mudslides coming this weekend. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene in the fire zone yet again. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, linsey.

i want you to take a look at this house. this is what officials are concerned of what might happen because of mudslides. this home survived the palisades fire but was split in two by a landside. the fires cooked vegetation and the soil so thoroughly that it's turned into a kind of quick sand. that means the water and the rain that's coming and forecast tomorrow could slide right off of it. that's why they're concerned about mud slides. that's why they've had 15,000 sandbags filled in southern california. they are installing k rails to catch some of the mud. they've also ordered a massive cleanup. we have 13,000 plus structures destroyed in southern california. all the pollutants inside that burned with them. firefighters have to finish out the day. red flag warnings in effect through the rest of the morning here. that is after we've seen ten new

fires igniting over the past 24 hours, so not quite out of the woods yet. george? >> george: okay, matt. thank you very much. we're going to turn now to the extreme cold that's gripping so much of the nation including subzero wind chills in chicago. alex perez is there. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. it's felt like living in an ice box for much of the country this week. check it out, here near the lake front it looks like the water is frozen in time. this cold in some areas is creating some major problems along the gulf coast as they are still digging out from that once in a life time snowstorm stretching from texas to florida that crippled road ways and led to at least ten deaths. some areas saw more snow than they've seen in the last 100 years. parts of florida like much of the south, not acustom to this kind of weather leading to cars sliding and multiple vehicle accidents. milton, florida, got almost 10 inches of snow. and this morning 23 million americans from louisiana to the

time. got red flag warnings and an elevated fire risks. some of the gusts have still been 30 to 50 miles per hour. we got the new drought monitor in. it's not good, and expected, right? extreme brought not just in southern california, but phoenix, who's on their second longest stretch without measurable rain. if they get six more days they will have beat it. looks like a chance next week. still, we've got on shore flow coming for southern florida. not going to get into arizona but this will help bring the fire danger down. it's also going to cause the potential for mud slide, land slides, especially if those little showers saturday night to sunday fall in the wrong places on a burn scar. >> linsey: so many extremes in all four corners of the country. ginger, thank you. overseas to israel and the latest on the cease fire deal with hamas. four more hostages are due to be released tomorrow, if all goes according to plan. our foreign correspondent tom soufi-burridge is on the scene in jerusalem. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. later today we should get the names of the next four female israeli hostages set to be freed

tomorrow. one should be a civilian. the other three idf soldiers. in exchange israel is expected to release around 180 palestinian prisoners including some serving long sentences for murder. remember, the initial six week cease fire agreement between israel and hamas, which saw three hostages freed last weekend, stipulates another 30 hostages should be free, including two americans, keith sigel. under the deal from this sunday, gazans will be able to move back to northern gaza. tents are being set up amid the destruction. early this week, president trump throwing doubts on whether the cease fire can be prolonged beyond six weeks to return a further 64 hostages including another american edan alexander. overnight trump saying, quote, a deal should hold, but if it doesn't, there will be lots of problems. guys? >> george: okay, tom.

over the country are warning people about a growing tech scam. people are getting messages saying they owe toll charges with a link to pay. but officials say you should not click on the link. just ignore the message because it is fake. tolling authorities say they never text drivers about possible toll charges. both finals for the australian open are set. the lone american left is madison keys. she made it through the finals and will face off against irina savalenka. you can watch that tonight. ahead, the family of the menendez brothers making a new plea for their release after the hearing was delayed due to wild fires. >> george: right now the bryan kohberger case as the defense team fights to throw out dna evidence in the case. kayna whitworth has the story. >> reporter: there's still so many questions in this case. we heard for the first time in

years more of what a surviving roommate said she saw and heard the night her friends were murdered. kohberger's lawyers are using her account to help paint this investigation as unjustified and mishandled. this morning stunning revelations in a boise courtroom as bryan kohberger's defense team tries to paint the investigation as flawed and shrouded in secrecy in an effort to get key evidence thrown out. >> this is a situation where this identification was done in complete secret behind closed doors. >> reporter: the former ph.d. student accused of stabbing four university of idaho students to death in an off campus home while his attorney, anne taylor, says details of a surviving roommate in an interview. >> there are two references to not remembering. a couple days later there's a third interview.

there's references to not remembering, being drunk, a statement i don't know any of it, like half this stuff. i don't know if it's a dream or if it's real. credibility is really important when that person is relied on in the investigation. >> reporter: taylor added the roommate told police she had been drinking and she also heard one of the victims come up and down the stairs during the time of the attack. >> they know that fact is wrong. >> reporter: taylor says that information was never provided to the judge at the time, laying the ground work for her to question the beginning of the investigation and collection of evidence including dna that authorities say was found on the button snap of a knife sheath at the crime scene. authorities using investigative genetic genealogy to connect kohberger to the crime. >> igg is the process by which law enforcement will take a sample of dna and initially probably run it through a

federal criminal database. if there's no hit there, then law enforcement can take that dna to a genetic geaneology database to see if that sample is related to someone. >> reporter: kohberger's dna was matched to trash pulled from the pennsylvania neighborhood where he lived with his parents when arrested. kohberger's lawyers accuse the fbi of not having a warrant to work with the trash collection company. >> i think it is different when you have the fbi telling the trash man what to do. >> an individual has no expectation of privacy after what they thrown into the trash. so law enforcement wouldn't need to get a warrant to check what they call abandonment sample. >> reporter: the prosecution saying no rights were violated and that they relaid the evidence based on what they knew

>> reporter: good morning again, george. donald trump made immigration central in his presidential race. this morning his administration is eager to show he is following through. along the southern border this morning, we are seeing signs of his long promised crackdown, as 1,500 troops begin their new mission, in the air and on the ground. military deportation flights have begun as part of this mission. marines from camp pendleton are now at the border wall, with heavy trucks and wire. the troops deployed to address what trump has declared a national emergency. now, the president says the troops are there to make sure the border is safe and secure and that criminals don't come into our country. and his administration says this is just the start. the surge in forces though comes as the situation on the border has improved steadily since new asylum restrictions went into place last spring. encounters between border patrol and migrants down 60% in recent months, rebecca. >> rebecca: thank you. we turn now to new pleas by relatives of the menendez brothers as their resentencing hearing has been pushed back two

months because of the california wild fire. erielle reshef is here with more. good morning, erielle. >> good morning, rebecca. lot of eyes on this, as you know. some family members and supporters are renewing their fight to have the brothers released after 35 years in prison. their cousin giving an empassioned plea. at an event in washington, d.c. on thursday, she emphasized their positive contributions and rehabilitation during the three decades they've been incarcerated. speaking on behalf of 25 family members the cousin said they've completely forgiven the brothers for the 1989 members of their parents. but not all family members agree. a california judge is expected to decide whether their sentence of life without parole should be reduced. that hearing was set for next week but was postponed until march due to the wild fire. dozens of family members met with the d.a. to try to convince him to push for resentencing. he continues to review this case. linsey? >> linsey: erielle, thank you.

now to those wild fires in southern california. high winds are fueling the flames with a new threat of mudslides coming this weekend. let's go back to our national chief correspondent matt gutman in the fire zone once again. good morning again, matt. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. first firefighters have to get through today. we've seen ten new fires start since yesterday. red flag warnings remain in effect through the remainder of this morning. this house gives you a sense of what officials are so concerned about with the mudslides. it survived the palisades fire, only to be split in two by a landslide afterwards. what's happened across the burn scars in southern california is that the fires burned so hot that they cooked not only the vegetation, but also the soil, turning it into a kind of quicksand that is water repellant. that's why officials are concerned about mudslides and that's why they've ordered the filling of 15,000 sandbags. placement of k rails, those concrete barriers, to catch the

ten things i hate about you, save the last dance. i loved your acting throughout my childhood. now this directorial debut. how does it feel? how different does it feel to direct versus acting? >> it's wonderful. i'm totally hooked. i absolutely loved every minute of it. it's so much work but so energizing. i've been working on this movie for five year. one of the actresses in the movie who plays the best friend, helen, she sent me the book five years ago saying, i heard that you are interested in directing. what about "wish you were here?" i fell in love with the book. i laughed. i cried. i laughed through my tears. i could so visualize it as a movie that it was the thing that made me go, okay, now's the time. it's only gotten deeper and more meaningful for me in the five years since we went into production. >> george: wow. >> finally the movie is out. it feels really necessary right now.

i wanted to put something out into the world that's very positive and hopeful and about love. and i just loved it. i loved it. >> linsey: we know you're a mom of three. you said before that parenting was a train camp for directing. how so? >> oh, i remember it was very cold in chicago in the winter. i remember i was so into the dance training. i loved it. i was also really tough on myself. kerri washington. that was the beginning. she was such a, like, big sister to me. she was so sweet and took care of everybody. it was great. i was just really focused on the dance part of it and wanted to get that right. >> george: we have a clip of you from that movie. >> hey, julia. do you remember when we were rehearsing for "save the last dance" and we rehearsed for weeks and weeks? got ourselves down, we were confident we were ready. we were like, okay, we're ready to shoot. then the day comes for us to shoot the scene and they changed some of the choreography. do you remember that? i was terrified. and you were cool.

[ applause ] >> thank you. >> rebecca: as soon as i knew i was interviewing you, i was excited. not only a fellow rebecca, but just all the anticipation for this book, all the excitement around it. for those who aren't familiar, give us a taste of what to expect here. >> it's a war college for dragon writers. and it' got romance. it has intrigue, politics and tons of dragons. >> rebecca: yeah. lot of dragons, lot of work on those dragons. >> yeah. >> rebecca: i got a question from somebody online ahead of this who said, is it okay if i go straight to "onyx storm" or do i really need to get the others? >> you really want to get the others first. otherwise it will take you a minute to catch up. >> rebecca: your book has taken the world by storm. the hash tag of your name on tik tok, are you aware of this? more than 2 billion? >> they just told me backstage. >> rebecca: 2 billion views. wow. how does it feel to finally see this in readers' hands?

>> it's amazing to see it out. it's surreal, kind of like it's happening to somebody else. i see somebody reading it and i think, oh, you've been in my brain? like we have this collective experience. we've been to this place together. it's a really great feeling. >> rebecca: lot of fans are going wild with their theories online. i got to ask you a couple and get your thoughts. the first fan theory is that the two main characters will go back to being enemies violet and zadan? >> i mean, i think you can go from there. never know. >> rebecca: that's another point. i'm going to ask another fan question here. you've got five books. >> yes. >> rebecca: you're not there yet. we're not there yet. we're on this wild ride. how far along are you with the

rest of the series? >> they're plotted but i haven't started. i'm taking a little break to rest and recuperate. i've been on deadlines for 2 1/2 years. i want to make sure my mind and body are healthy. they're coming. they're all plotted. >> rebecca: so you know where this is heading? >> yeah. i had to. we knew we were going to have a television show when we were in edit. >> rebecca: now that we know they're all plotted, i'm gonna ask you another question. >> yeah. >> rebecca: violet. does she have is a third love interest? a third love interest? >> i'm not really a fan of love triangles. i'm just not. >> rebecca: you want the purity of the real thing? >> i do. doesn't mean i'm not gonna make them work for. >> rebecca: you will also be writing chap pers in zadan's point of view. >> i usually do, one per book. >> rebecca: one per book. that's all we're getting? >> i never say never. >> rebecca: one person wrote online they think things are going to get, quote, real bad. >> ooh.

>> rebecca: before they get better. >> well, i mean -- probably. >> rebecca: oh. do you want shed any light on how bad things might get? >> i think in any story you have to dig characters down to where they're at their lowest before they can build back up inside again. we got our dragons down to the depth so they are arm up and fight. >> rebecca: i love at the start of the book, it's addressed to all of the people. that idea of people getting dragged down. how much of that is what you're writing, from your own personal experience? >> definitely. i was a kid that was caught reading under the desk in school. made fun of for being smart, things like that. especially with the chronic illness reputation, it's important for people to be seen. >> rebecca: you see it, obviously, in the numbers. 2 billion people talking about this. >> that's a lot. >> rebecca: and are interested in what you're doing. i think the biggest question i've now seen is, will rebecca yarros leave us on a cliffhanger in the next book? >> oh, that's a definite.

>> rebecca: oh, we get a cliffhanger? >> definitely. >> rebecca: how fun is it? >> i love it. i picture them. i already know what it is before i start the book. i drive toward that moment with glee. >> rebecca: iron flame had a cliffhanger. >> it did. >> rebecca: and you loved that? >> i did. >> rebecca: for "onyx storm" you said the hardest part of the process was the ending? >> it was. making sure you're tying up all the points and leading into book 4, making sure you laid everything out there. i did something different with the ending of "onyx storm" that i fought hard and am proud of it. >> rebecca: when you say fought for it, what does that look? >> any time you have discussions with your editors about what things should look like. as a writer, you want to listen to other people's advice. i'm never the only expert in my field. it was definitely some discussions. but i won. i got the ending. >> rebecca: you won. so when you read that cliffhanger, you know it's all rebecca. >> you can blame me.
