>> former san francisco superintendent matt wayne has a new job tonight. find out which bay area school district hired him. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. we're going to start in vallejo, which is seeing a wave of violence following the shooting of a four year old earlier this month. >> on tuesday, a couple of cal maritime students were wounded at a gas station in a shooting. then last night, a man was shot as he was working at a food truck. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke to residents who say promises from city leadership just aren't enough. >> reporter the scene of another shooting in vallejo, a city on edge. >> as a female screaming, we're on with a translator. she's saying someone shot at her car and that there's a male shot in the head. >> police and paramedics called to marin street and curtola parkway thursday night. >> we got one critical in the back of the food truck. >> the man shot, believed to be the owner of the food truck. >> i actually saw him last night

as i was driving home from work and he was out there cooking. >> paula conley was born and raised in vallejo and has long been advocating for a safer city. >> to see this happen to him is shocking and outrageous, and it just we shouldn't stand for this. >> the shooting comes just days after two cal maritime students were shot at a gas station near campus. the school's president writing in an email to staff and students, this devastating event has left our cadets injured, their families traumatized, and our community shaken. both cadets are recovering from their injuries. however, one remains hospitalized. one of the victims sisters setting up this gofundme page describing what's expected to be a long road to recovery. and in another email, the school's president with a plea given this unprovoked criminal attack on our colleagues, please remain vigilant, especially after dark, as incidents such as this one can occur suddenly and without warning, as this one did. these shootings on the

heels of this press conference last week, vallejo's mayor promising action to address the city's violence after a shooting earlier this month left a four year old critically injured. >> going to be working with our chief to initiate contact with leaders in neighboring cities so that we can explore regional approaches. >> it's complete lawlessness. it's anarchy. it's out of control. >> residents like paula saying the promises aren't enough. >> so at this point, i really don't care what you have to say. do something. make changes. take action. >> we did reach out to vallejo police for more details on the investigations into these shootings and are waiting to hear back. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> president trump visited los angeles today to see the damage from the wildfires firsthand. >> he was greeted by governor newsom, and the two men spoke briefly after the president stepped off the plane. governor newsom and trump appeared to put their political squabbles aside and agreed to work together to rebuild. the president then got an aerial tour of the devastation and met with some of

the victims and survivors. he concluded his visit by taking part in a roundtable discussion with local leaders and fire officials. >> i didn't realize, i mean, i saw a lot of bad things on television, but the extent of it, the size of it. we flew over it in a helicopter. we flew to a few of the areas, and it is devastation. it's incredible. it's really an incineration. >> reporter tim caputo, with our sister station in los angeles, has more on what came out of the president's visit and the potential for any aid that could have conditions attached. >> president trump left los angeles confident he and governor gavin newsom can work together to get angelenos the federal disaster aid they so desperately need. >> we just had a good talk. we're on the same team. we want to get it fixed. >> the president's three hour visit to see what's left of pacific palisades began in marine one, touring the devastation from above. >> nobody's ever probably seen anything like this. oh, you

could almost say since the second world. >> war that a roundtable with city, county and state leaders on what's next for the tens of thousands impacted by this fire. the president and mayor, karen bass, had a brief back and forth about getting homeowners back to their properties sooner than later. >> we want you to be back in your homes immediately. >> but the people are willing to clean out their own debris. it doesn't cost. >> a lot. they can. >> you should let them do it, because by the time you hire contractors, it's going to be two years. >> those sitting at the roundtable, like representative judy chu, understands homeowners frustrations about how long the rebuilding timeline appears to be. >> i think our government reps need to put their heads together to see how they can cut down on the amount of time it takes to get from one step to the other. >> earlier in the day, the president said federal disaster aid would only come to los angeles if the state implements voter id and new water management policies. the second condition, refuted by representative brad sherman, who was also at the roundtable and said the president doesn't understand the state's water

system. >> we don't have a water shortage here in los angeles county at this time, and not having water come from northern california down to southern california had nothing to do with this fire. >> governor newsom, who has often been criticized by trump, met the president and first lady as they arrived at lax, vowing to work together during crisis. again. >> you were there for us during covid. i don't forget that. and i have all the expectations that we'll be able to work together to get this speedy recovery. >> after that exchange, the mayor's office later clarified that it is the federal government that determines the debris removal timeline, so she's hopeful the president can expedite the process. in pacific palisades, i'm tim caputo, abc seven news. >> a fire survivor from southern california is in san francisco to thank the local firefighters who helped save his home. >> it's a horrible disaster, but we also experienced a lot of human kindness. >> an emotional reunion at a san francisco firehouse friday.

southern california resident eugene kwok made a special trip to thank the crew of fire station 25 in the bayview. >> the engine and the four crew members, along with the fire department and all the firefighters in the state, are our number one heroes right now. we're starstruck just to think of them. >> firefighters from station 25 were deployed to the palisades fire. eugene says they saved his home and 16 others on his block. they also salvaged valuables from homes that did burn. leaving a note for evacuated residents to find later. fire captain jonathan baxter says they are equally thankful for eugene's visit. >> they know while they're fighting these fires and seeing devastation to the left and the right, and to the front of them, to the back of them, that what they're doing is making a difference and it is helping. so i want to personally thank mr. eugene kwok. >> engine 25 truck and some two dozen other members of the sffd are still in southern california, protecting lives and

property. >> firefighters are making considerable gains on the hughes fire near santa clarita and castaic. containment is up to 79% tonight and all evacuation orders have been lifted. the fire has burned more than 10,000 acres, but no structures have been damaged or destroyed. so let's turn our attention to the weather forecast. we have some changes on the way for the weekend. meteorologist sandhya patel is here now with a chance of rain and sandhya, maybe some wind to talk about. >> absolutely, dan. you know what? it's going to feel like we switched back to winter. let me show you what's happening on live doppler seven. a trough is deepening. it's going to drag in with it. colder air, kick up the winds and even bring in some spotty showers. so, 10:00 tomorrow morning in the south bay. there's a chance. you look in the afternoon and some spotty showers begin to rotate back in as we head into the 2 to 4 p.m. time period. a wind advisory goes up for the north bay mountains. right now, it's already up until 10 a.m. sunday. gusts up to 50 miles an hour could see a few outages or tree

limbs going down. the other thing that's going down are the temperatures frost advisory for our inland areas. 1 to 9 a.m. tomorrow. numbers down to the low 30s and frost will form. this is going to be the first storm for southern california of this winter season, and they are going to get soaked, as you can see, not just tomorrow, but going into sunday as well. the mountains will pick up snow. the concern here, as much as it will help the firefighting efforts with higher humidity and that rain, there is potential for mudslides. so here's a sampling of some of the rainfall projections. castaic 6000/900 of an inch. altadena 6600 la. about a third and pacific palisades a little bit less than that. i'll be back to let you know how long you might need to hang on to the umbrellas and have the jackets handy this weekend. coming up. >> all right. thank you, sandhya. on the peninsula today, a vigil honored the seven farmworkers killed in the half moon bay mass shooting two years ago. >> call me. caminando. vamos.

>> survivors of the shooting say they are continuing to seek support. some in the form of music, others through community groups. groups like alas, which has been pushing for more resources for farmworkers. >> their legacy lives on, as we remember across the country, the importance of elevating mental health services, resources for our farmworkers, and remembering the significant contributions that they've made in our country. >> the shooting also exposed deplorable housing conditions on the farm. city officials say since the shooting, housing for farm workers has become a priority. 47 homes for farmers are expected to be ready in may. >> tonight's vigil mass at saint dominic's church in san francisco, was one of many services leading up to the 2025 walk for life west coast. event gets underway at 930 tomorrow morning with mass at saint mary's cathedral, followed by a rally at the civic center.

anti-abortion supporters will then march down market street toward the embarcadero. sfmta says counter-protests are planned, which will increase the number of street closures in the downtown area, so be wary of that. muni busses are being rerouted around the demonstration. >> in the north bay. santa rosa police are considering using drones as first responders, sending them to a crime in progress or natural disaster before officers arrive. the drone program is raising concerns over equity and privacy issues. it could cost as much as $250,000 annually, critics say. statistics show the police tend to over monitor communities of color. >> the money put into that mental health trauma services would be a lot better than having law enforcement come in. and again over police. >> we want the community to know that these will not be used for surveillance or patrol. >> a series of public meetings are being held, is being held to get community feedback about the

drones. the next meeting is tuesday, january 28th, 9 a.m. at santa rosa city hall. >> tonight, state health inspectors want to know what's in the water in moss landing. last week's fire at the vistra energy plant is raising safety concerns about whether toxic levels of heavy metals might have been released into the air and the water. one thing they're looking for is fluoride. and if any dangerous hydrofluoric acid might have been produced. officials are testing five water systems near the plant. preliminary results should be ready by next week. >> sonoma state announced massive cuts this week, including its athletics programs, the action now being taken by coaches and players. >> and a bay area nonprofit is pleading for help. what it needs in order to keep making prom dreams come true. >> lunar new year celebrations are picking up what one south bay shop has decided to add to its drinks. >> all of that's coming up. but first, here's a look at what's ahead tonight on jimmy kimmel live! right after abc seven news at 11.

pushback on a plan to close multiple schools. antioch fired its superintendent in august after allegations of bullying. prom is one of the biggest nights for high schoolers, and one south bay nonprofit is asking for help to keep the magic alive for three years. the silicon valley chapter of the princess project has been operating out of a donated space in santa clara. the organization provides prom dresses for teens who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford one. >> when we hear comments from the students, things like, thank you for making me feel pretty. it's overwhelming. and it's that's what makes us do what we do. >> but the space has been bought by new owners and they need to move out by february 15th. right before prom season, if you or someone you know would like to help the princess project find a new space, head to our website, abc7 news.com. >> in the south bay, lunar new year celebrations are ready to go. there is a big festival planned this weekend in san jose. and then there is what? a

going to notice is the chill. we're going to have the wind, frost and yes, even some showers. so let's check out what's happening in the atmosphere. water vapor imagery and radar on live doppler seven showing you this trough that is coming in from the north and it is deepening as it's digging southward. it's going to bring with it a colder air mass ahead of it. we've been seeing a lot of cloud cover moving in, but you can see just a temporary area of clearing. and that is why we're in for a cold night ahead. as we check out the temperatures. right now, we've got 30s to 50 on your readings. a live view from mount tam cam. and those clouds are coming in this weekend. spotty showers the next few mornings, cold with areas of frost and a gusty pattern is setting up for the weekend. windiest in the hills, it will be breezy at the lower elevations first thing tomorrow morning. you may be scraping ice off your windshield if you park outside. upper 20s around lakeport. low to mid 30s. north bay valleys and the inland east bay. 36 degrees in livermore, 44

in san jose, 40s around oakland and san francisco. afternoon highs. they're coming down today. it was cooler, but we still had some 60s. tomorrow it's going to be all 50s with those spotty showers showing up. so let's go hour by hour and time this out for you. a couple of drops in the early afternoon heading into 3 p.m, occasional showers into the evening hours. i will tell you this much. this is just one model. the other model is showing much more in the way of wet weather across our region. 10:00 tomorrow night. you do have those showers and this continues into sunday. early in the morning. there might even be some snow over mount hamilton as the air mass is cold enough. and then by around 11 or 12:00 this stuff is done on sunday. not expecting a whole lot, anywhere from zero to a few hundredths of an inch. wetter locations could pick up up to 2/10 of an inch of rain. winds going to come up out of the north northeast tomorrow morning. calistoga 40 miles an hour 36 fairfield. it is gustiest in the north bay hills,

but you will notice that the winds start to pick up even at the lower elevations. by sunday it is breezy to gusty, and that pattern goes on through much of the day in the mountains. it's a winter weather advisory. cold conditions, gusty winds. 7 a.m. saturday to 4 p.m. sunday. winter weather advisory above 5000ft in the sierra, 4 to 6in expected above 3000. we're talking about a dusting of snow now. this is going to be a cold air mass. so once everything starts to move on out of the picture, freeze. watch for most of the bay area away from the coast in the city sunday morning to tuesday morning. temperatures down to the upper 20s. protect those sensitive plants and don't forget about your pets. pipes could get damaged. accuweather seven day forecast. spotty showers, windy in the hills. we are looking at a cooler weekend with some early morning showers. sunday breezy day and then although next week starts out dry, it's going to be a cold start in the mornings uh- thursday evening into friday. it is looking like we're going to

so, it's opening day for george's donuts and merriment. it's been 20 months that we've been working on this. -wild. -and we're so excited. yeah, we're so excited to welcome everybody in. ♪♪ o'leary: so, we have a couple of crullers. we have a vanilla bean glaze, a chocolate glaze, and then a churro glaze. gosh, we have so many. my favorite is the doughnut hole flight. it's her famous brioche. i think that's the doughnut i've been doing for the last, gosh, 20 years. um, so that's--even in my fine dining experience, that's sort of what all the guests kind of come back for. i joke that i can't get away from that doughnut, um, but that's the one i've played with the most. ♪♪ dudum: doughnuts bring joy. they bring nostalgia. we definitely wanted to bring that in, but it felt hard not to bring in salads and sandwiches for people to enjoy in this kind of space. it can be your diet breakfast, lunch, and dinner. -it has been mine. we have a really fun wine menu with spritzes. so, i think that's been the exciting part that our neighborhood and our guests are getting to experience not just doughnuts for takeaway, but they're--it's actually a wonderful cafe. ♪♪ so, we've been huge fans of janina's beignets for a long time. you know, we've been following her. she was at spruce and village bakery. i love her sprinkle cookie. we finally reached out and got to meet her actually on national donut day... -national donut day... ...and, you know, convinced her to join us as partner. just such a fun 20 months of developing that together. definitely. so, we have fun, playful spins on doughnuts, too. so, we have a brioche doughnut, um, in a few variations. one is a key lime pie doughnut. we have a strawberry champagne jam-filled doughnut, a nutella doughnut. so, a brioche with nutella side of it. a really fun maple bacon doughnut. so there's a lot of maple bacon doughnuts around,

but this one's really fun because we found really nice, organic eggs. there's a little bit of everything for everybody, for sure. -yeah. we have experiences and memories of, uh, eating doughnuts with our grandparents. we want to create those memories again, whether it's through doughnuts or date night or morning coffee with your parents. we really wanna have that place be here and creating those memories for people. -i think people were surprised. -yeah. we were telling all our friends and family in the community, like, "we're opening up a doughnut shop." and then they saw this and they're like, "wait, this?" and yeah, when they saw the menu, we were kinda like, "surprise!" -yeah. and i--we were joking. we went home from our first, actually second friends and family, and i was like, like, "we're a restaurant." [laughs] it's true. yeah, so it was really fun. ♪♪ king george is my husband andrew's grandfather. he's actually here today. he owned a laundromat in oakland, and he dubbed himself "the king of oakland." he's really this larger-than-life character.
