palestinians are on sunday hoping to go back to what's left of their homes in northern gaza where american volunteer, dr. omar malas says they're returning to devastation. >> unfortunately, there's not really homes to travel back to. it's really just rubble. >> reporter: in total, 33 hostages are set to be released during a six-week truce. two americans, keith siegel and sagui dekel-chen, are expected to be among those expected to be freed. in exchange israel will release hundreds of palestinian prisoners. now, israeli authorities confirming the release of 200 palestinian prisoners in exchange, some of them serving life sentences, but nothing about this deal has been straightforward. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu now saying palestinians won't be allowed to return to the north until the release of female civilian arbel yehud is arranged. janai? >> janai: we'll be watching for that. britt, thank you for that update. back here at home, president trump is holding a rally in las vegas later today, and that comes one day after touring disaster zones in both north carolina and out west in los angeles. abc's white house correspondent

high as 45 degrees since pavement can be cooler than the air. they put me on this controlled icy course live on "gma." we set up barriers to simulate a hazard on the road. a hazard that you don't see coming in wintry conditions when there's a whiteout or a snowstorm, and something just comes in front of your car, car stops short, an animal jumps in. first i demonstrate what experts tell us not to do in these conditions. going too fast. i'm going to panic. i'm going to slam on the brakes, and i'm going to turn the wheel hard all at the same time. now, i'm driving at 40 miles an hour. there i register that there is a problem. oh, my god. i'm going to slam into -- and slam into the snowbank behind me. i am okay. i braked as hard as i could. everything is fine here. here's what i should have done. when approaching a turn or trying to avoid an obstacle on a slick road, only perform one action at a time. while holding the wheel steady, gently press on the brakes to

seven news starts right now. >> and good morning to you i'm zach fuentes. today, the seven finalists for alameda county district attorney will take part in a forum. the alameda county board of supervisors is expected to make a final decision next week. now, today's forum starts at 11 at lakeshore avenue baptist church in oakland, and it's free to attend. coaches and athletes at sonoma state are fighting to reverse the university's plans to cut athletic programs and athletes. the press democrat reports they plan to file a class action lawsuit against the university and lobby state and local governments to save the 11 athletic programs that are in jeopardy. this comes after sonoma state announced days ago sweeping cuts to programs,

degrees and faculty to address a $24 million deficit for the 20 2526 school year. all right. let's get a check of the forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, zack. good morning everyone. we're starting out with some pretty nice cloud cover here and some sunshine. the golden gate bridge, it is in the upper 40s downtown, 51, in oakland, san jose. seen a few sprinkles and look at the clouds. from santa cruz. you could see a 10th of an inch here throughout the day. today. most of the moisture. east bay, south bay, spotty showers on tap, cold in the north bay 39. santa rosa with some dense fog through petaluma and napa. our 24 hour temperature change puts us slightly milder, with the morning cloud cover in the east bay and the south bay, but look at the fog with up to no visibility at all from novato to napa, a quarter of a mile. santa rosa. it's better. even some sunshine elsewhere, but afternoon highs a lot cooler today. we're only in the low to mid 50s at best, and you can see those spotty showers around the south bay. we'll talk more in detail about the weekend the

vallejo's mayor promising action to address the city's violence after a shooting earlier this month left a four year old critically injured. >> going to be working with our chief to initiate contact with leaders in neighboring cities so that we can explore regional approaches. >> it's complete lawlessness. it's anarchy. it's out of control. >> residents like paula saying the promises aren't enough. >> so at this point, i really don't care what you have to say. do something. make changes. take action. >> we did reach out to vallejo police for more details on the investigations into these shootings, and are waiting to hear back. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> developing news for female israeli soldiers have been freed in the latest round of releases under the ceasefire agreement between israel and hamas. this is video of the freed hostages waving from a helicopter in israel. they've since been reunited with their families. israel released about 200 palestinian prisoners as a part of the ceasefire deal. now,

dozens of freed prisoners will be sent to exile in places like egypt, per the negotiations between israel and hamas. this is the second hostage prisoner exchange since the cease fire last week. another exchange is expected to happen next saturday. also developing news, vice president j.d. vance swore in pete hegseth as the next defense secretary under the trump administration. this comes after hegseth was narrowly confirmed by the senate in a 51 to 50 tie breaking vote by vice president vance. and new this morning, the senate voted 59 to 34 to confirm kristi noem as president donald trump's pick for homeland security secretary. so this means she'll have a key role in u.s. disaster and immigration policy. and president trump visited los angeles to see the damage from the wildfires there firsthand. governor newsom greeted him, and the two spoke briefly after the president stepped off the plane. governor newsom and president trump appeared to put their political squabbles aside and agreed to work together to rebuild. the president then got an aerial tour of the

devastation and met with some of the victims. he concluded his visit by taking part in a roundtable discussion with local leaders and fire officials. >> i didn't realize, i mean, i saw a lot of bad things on television, but the extent of it, the size of it. we flew over it in a helicopter. we flew to a few of the areas, and it is devastation. it's incredible. it's really an incineration. >> mr. trump went on to add that the federal government is standing behind local government officials. 100%. a fire survivor from southern california is in san francisco to thank the local firefighters here who helped save his home there. the firefighters from fire station 25, in the bayview, were deployed to la to fight the pacific palisades fire. and eugene kwok says their actions saved his neighborhood. they kept 17 of the 24 homes on his block from burning down, and even saved valuables from homes that did burn. >> it's a horrible disaster, but we also experienced a lot of

human kindness. that engine and the four crew members, along with the fire department and all the firefighters in the state, are our number one heroes right now. we're starstruck just to think of them. >> they absolutely are heroes. engine 20 five's truck and some two dozen other members of the sffd are still in southern california, protecting lives and property. we're very grateful to them. and firefighters are making considerable gains on the hughes fire near santa clarita and castaic. containment is up to 87% in all. evacuation orders have been lifted. that fire has burned more than 10,000 acres, but no structures have been damaged or destroyed in that one. new details in the unexpected death of a legendary bay area drag performer in london, the metropolitan police just released this surveillance footage of three men they want to question about lina's death in april of 2023. detectives say they visited the residence where his body was found early on the day the death was reported.

year old murder case, but it didn't go the way the victim's family had hoped. the contra costa county district attorney is not charging the mother of the man suspected of killing alexis, gabe. gabe was last seen leaving her ex-boyfriend's antioch home in 2022. gabe's ex was later killed by u.s. marshals that were trying to arrest him. prosecutors just closed the investigation into his mother, finding that there was not enough evidence to charge her with being an accessory after the crime. gabe's family. >> like the first couple of years, was tough. and then it's gotten it's gotten better. but today, today. what happened today was. >> stuff. >> gabe's remains were found in the months after her disappearance. her family is holding a day of kindness in her hometown of oakley this weekend on the peninsula. local leaders

support groups. belinda hernandez arriaga, founder of the nonprofit alas, has been spearheading the resources farm workers have received since the shootings. she described this anniversary as one of the hardest. >> our farm workers were sharing just how sad and vulnerable they still felt, and the tears are still here. and now, on the heels of this new presidency, it brings another wave of trauma that continues. and we're still fighting for housing. >> so the shootings exposed deplorable housing conditions at the farms, half moon bay city manager telling us housing has been the priority for farm workers. one of the sites opening in may. >> coming on board in just the next couple of months that will house those families that were directly displaced by these shootings and many, many more of our farm workers here on the coast. >> at the county level. changes to the housing codes after the shootings have helped speed up the process. >> we need to continue to add to our affordable housing stock. we need to improve our existing

forecast for the bay area and much of the state. you can see it spreading some snow over the sierra nevada. light rain showers, the san joaquin valley and then eventually heavier rain into southern california. we're on the backside of that. so just a couple of hundreds of south bay have seen some sprinkles. the east bay potentially. but as we get into southern california, over a half inch of rain, mudslides possible and some flooding here with all the burn scar issues. gorgeous view here from the oakland airport. it is 50 downtown, 51 across the bay, 46 redwood city 52 with the cloud cover here. the shark tank still cold and foggy from santa rosa, petaluma and napa. and as we look outside, you can see the fog in the distance. our exploratorium camera. spotty showers throughout the bay today, tonight, tomorrow. and then as we get into the next several days, the cold mornings stay with us. will continue into next week with a freeze watch and then gusty winds in the upper elevations of the north bay. so the north bay mountains, looking at the winds here over

30 miles an hour. the next several hours, they could gust as high as 50 miles an hour. then they begin to weaken, ramping up again into your sunday morning. so very breezy conditions to gusty winds. cloud cover as that low continues to retrograde and sink to the south. but as we get into the evening hours, a few more showers become possible. you can see from the east bay, the peninsula, the south bay. then by early tomorrow it sinks to the south and we'll see more in the way of sun, but not much warmth. you can see a couple hundredths right on through the weekend here, so not a whole lot of rain, a little bit of snow, low snow levels down to about 3000ft with our winter weather advisory. it's a cool one today with low to mid 50s, mostly cloudy conditions. mount hamilton could see even a few flakes of snow. few peeks of sun though. two spotty showers end tomorrow, then cold mornings, milder afternoons. rain chances increase

warriors are looking to string together another win after thursday's game against the bulls at chase center and on the gridiron, the 40 niners have a reason to celebrate because a familiar face is back in santa clara. here's abc seven sports director larry beil. >> good morning everybody. it's the warriors hosting the lakers tonight right here on abc seven. lebron james likely to see a couple of unfamiliar names on the scouting report. like who is guy santos? who is quinton post? he's going to be asking. steve kerr has been searching for effective lineups all year. so many injuries been a problem. santos getting more minutes. he was the 55th overall pick in the 2022 draft, six eight forward out of brazil. endless energy hit five threes against the bulls for a career high 19 points. the shocker, though, was really a seven foot rookie. quinton post playing in just his sixth nba game. he also hit five threes, had a career high 20 points. with injuries to draymond green and jonathan kuminga, the dubs need scoring and these two have certainly

provided a jolt. >> don't be afraid you know to let it fly you know kind of feel like last few games have kind of been struggling offensively. so i think that's why i'm getting a chance just to get a new look out there. so it doesn't make sense. if i come in and i and i and i don't play my own game. >> you can catch the warriors and lakers tonight. tip off at chase center is 5:30 p.m. here on abc seven, followed by after the game. well, the coaching dominoes continue to fall in the nfl box. offensive coordinator liam coen set to take over the jaguars head coaching position. the raiders bit of a surprise. they hired 73 year old pete carroll to be their new head coach. now it's reported the cowboys will hire brian schottenheimer. and all this added up means some really good news for the 49 ers, because that means robert saleh is coming back as their defensive coordinator. their ex, dc, spent three and a half years as head coach of the new york jets before being fired. saleh

expected to become the highest paid defensive coordinator in the nfl. we're talking about more than $4.5 million per year. well, this is championship weekend in the nfl. the bills will visit the chiefs in the afc title game, a battle of arguably the two best quarterbacks in football. josh allen trying to end kansas city's playoff dominance, while patrick mahomes just keeps being amazing as the chiefs try to win their third straight super bowl. now the bills have lost their last three playoff games to kc, and allen wants to see that trend end. >> you always remember the feeling of not pulling through. you know that sticks with you for a while and it really, really doesn't leave. but again, i think every year that you go through in this league, you learn more things about yourself, about your team, about the game of football. >> when you win a super bowl, you start back at the bottom, you start back level with everybody, and you have to go about your process and put in that work. and so it definitely is a battle every single year.

just joining us here are the seven things to know this morning. number one, today, the seven finalists for alameda county district attorney will take part in a forum. a final decision is expected next week. the forum starts at 11 at lakeshore avenue baptist church in oakland. number two, the 2025 walk for life west coast kicks off today, starting with mass at saint mary's cathedral, and that's followed by a rally at 12:30 p.m. at civic center. sfmta says counter-protests are planned, which will increase street closures downtown. number three, state health inspectors are testing five water systems near the vistra energy plant in
