as laying off dozens of its faculty members. all of it is to address the school's nearly $24 million budget deficit for the upcoming school year. but it has a lot of students and staff saying they're being blindsided. now, as tara campbell explains, they're preparing to fight back. >> the airport to make our budget. >> it's a pep talk. the sonoma state coaches never thought they'd have to give, nor did they think they'd be preparing to file a lawsuit against the university. but that's exactly what they're doing. in wake of the school's announcement wednesday, it's shuttering its athletic department. >> there's been a complaint filed with the office of civil rights. >> the complaint, filed on behalf of minority athletes, calls for an investigation into the university's decision. >> the athletic department is the most diverse group on campus, way more than than the campus at large. so this this decision harms minority students. >> like many coaches here, marcus zimmer's seawolves roots run decades deep student athlete turned coach, just like women's soccer head coach and hall of

famer amiria salzman. >> on one hand, we're trying to get them somewhere else, but on the other hand, we're asking them to fight, and that's a lot to put on people. >> it takes a lot of commitment from our family and our friends to even get us to the opportunity to go to college, and taking that away from this, athletes and non-athletes alike. it just breaks my heart. >> heartbreaking is how these coaches are describing it too. >> when we recruit players, we look at them in their eyes. we talk and meet their families and look at them, and we promise their families that we're going to take care of them. and now the school has stripped us of that opportunity. so i have to go back on my word to all of our players, and that hurts more than anything else. >> while there is a lot of hurt, there's also a lot of hurt. >> as athletes and coaches were taught to fight like my team goes by a quote played till the last minute, and that's what we're going to do. >> we reached out to the university for a response to the filing and received an email

reading. the university is aware of the complaint and it is being reviewed, and certainly conversations like the ones going on behind me right now between these coaches and these athletes will continue. this group says they're not giving up. >> my goal is to be able to come back here in a couple years and still have a legacy left, and for these coaches to still have a place to call home and to come to work to every day. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> well, turning now to the southern california wildfires, where firefighters have just about full containment on the three major wildfires tonight, the palisades fire is 84% contained. it has burned more than 23,000 acres. containment on the fire is 95%. it has burned more than 14,000 acres, and crews continue to gain ground on the hughes fire with 90% containment. but the big concern this weekend is rain, which could cause landslides in those burned areas. tonight, southern california is preparing for that possibility of even

more disaster. tim caputo, from our sister station in los angeles, reports now from the palisades. >> as the rain begins to fall on what's left of pacific palisades, many of the unrecognizable neighborhoods have been prepped for mother nature's latest test. several types of sandbags set up ahead of the rain, some to prevent potentially toxic debris from flowing down driveways and into storm drains. other bags protecting the structures that somehow survived the palisades fire. >> you want to just put this over here? >> natasha mandic. his home is still standing. her garage didn't fare as well. >> we're concerned about the runoff, the toxic material with the rain coming in that it's going to, you know, get potentially into our house. >> like many victims of the devastating fire, mandic is still confused on what she can or can't do when it comes to cleanup at her house. >> i understand it's a crazy situation. a lot of things to do. however, the houses that are still standing have different issues and they need to be addressed. >> this afternoon, at a five hour long town hall in malibu, some residents also wanted

clarification, worried the damage to their property could increase the risk of mudslides. >> i guess my question is about timing when it comes to debris removal. the bottom of our retaining wall has been burned down. whoever built it originally, it was built of wood. and so we have a hill that does not have any structure to retain the mud if there's a storm tonight. >> debris removal questions come as mayor karen bass and president trump, who visited pacific palisades friday, sparred over wanting to get homeowners back in as soon as possible. >> we want you to be back in your homes immediately. >> but the people are willing to clean out their own debris. it doesn't cost. >> a lot. >> but now there's an unofficial warning from an lafd captain. >> these decisions have major impacts on your health and well-being. >> who took to social media to offer advice not on behalf of the fire department, but because he felt the need to warn people about the dangers of rushing back to their damaged or destroyed property too soon. >> while limited access is being granted into certain zones at this time, i do not recommend

hours, we already had one hundredths of an inch of rain at sfo and oakland and even near hayward. and you'll notice that the rain is very, very light. right now we're seeing some light rainfall parts over parts of the richmond san rafael bridge, and will continue to see some of the light isolated showers over the next few hours. in fact, our futurecast animation shows at 1:00 this morning. we'll see some light rain in parts of the east bay and also south of sacramento. but notice by 6:00 in the morning it really winds down and we'll have a mostly dry day tomorrow by midday. so rainfall amounts not much, just a few more hundredths of an inch for some locations. some areas in the north bay might not get any rain at all, but we have some cold weather and some windy weather to tell you about coming up, dion. >> all right. we'll be watching it closely. francis. thanks. today, thousands of anti-abortion rights advocates were on the move through san francisco for the annual walk for life west coast. as abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows,

district. one of the reasons they're upset is over the closure of the great highway. engardio says he disagrees. this one issue should cost him his job. >> i think he's made the west side of san francisco less safe by spearheading the closure of the great highway. he snuck it in against the will of the people that he's supposed to be representing. >> the road cannot be a direct connection to daly city anymore. it's literally falling into the ocean. the southern section is falling into the ocean because of extreme coastal erosion. so that raises the question what to do with the middle section. and people are going to disagree. they say it's a bad idea to recall someone based on a disagreement over a single issue. >> organizers need to gather 10,000 signatures by may 22nd to trigger a recall. candidates for the alameda county district attorney took part in a forum today to show their stances on key issues. alameda county justice based coalitions hosted the event where audience members asked some questions. they

touched upon topics like public safety, police accountability, and substance abuse. all those in the running are in high local legal positions. now to a bizarre robbery attempt at a south bay restaurant, one that had employees struggling with what they call the robot kidnaper. check it out. surveillance video from just before 8 a.m. last saturday at f 21 restaurant. shows the man walking in. he asks to use the restroom and when he emerges, he grabs one of the shop's three robot servers. you can see there he's struggling to get it out the front door and into his backed up car, parked right outside. employees race after him and eventually get the man to release the robot and call police. the owner tells me the robot costs about $18,000, but says it is useless for a thief because it has to be specially programed in order to work. still ahead tonight on abc n news at 11, thousands are celebrating the lunar new year

smoke coming off those grills. there was also live entertainment and some vendors selling their goods. if you missed out, don't worry, it will be back again tomorrow at broadway starting at 10 a.m. in san francisco. the dharma treasury temple is putting. thousands of its buddha relics collection on display to celebrate the lunar new year. it features gem like relics from the historical founder of buddhism and its disciples. it's part of the largest buddha collection in the country, and that collection will be on display each day until february 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. admission is free this weekend. lunar new year celebrations kicked off in san francisco's chinatown. dancers, giant walking puppets, drummers and dancers took part in the annual mini parade. the procession along grant avenue finished at the flower market street fair's main stage on pacific, where mayor daniel lurie helped officially open the

tree and then free it from the line, though it had a hook in its beak, so they transported it to the vet to be removed. animal control expects it to be returned to the wild to live a happy life. and hey, continuing this animal themed segment of ours, you never know who or what might be lurking under your house. watch closely. a black bear got evicted this week from south lake tahoe. apparently all it took was a few taps on the side of the home to get the bear to come out and dart off. this was a young male bear that had taken up residence. i want to watch it again. francis, i had no idea. you could just tap, like, knock three times and out comes a bear. i don't know if i would get that close. >> and i'm also so impressed at how it can squeeze in and out of that size hole. >> did not expect that either. yeah, yeah. didn't expect. >> the. >> didn't expect the weather situation. >> yes yes yes. >> just very. light isolated showers. we only had a hundredths of an inch in many areas and some haven't gotten

any rain. we might get a few more hundredths of an inch in a few more spots. so we'll start out with a look at live doppler seven satellite radar image. we did get some sprinkles over san francisco and some falling in the east bay right now. this will continue to circulate over the next few hours, bringing us a little bit more rain. but as you saw earlier, it really didn't amount to much. maybe a few hundredths of an inch. maybe some locations might get almost a 10th of an inch. but what is happening is the winds have really picked up, especially in the north bay. gusts you can see above 500ft. hawkeye at 45 miles. hood mountain 35 mile per hour winds. atlas peak 17 miles. and that's because this system is also bringing us some windy conditions, especially in the north bay mountains. so there's a wind advisory until 10:00 tomorrow morning, where gusts can reach all the way up to 50mph. so be careful if you're driving in those higher elevations. but for right now, it's really looking beautiful from emeryville. as we look out towards the bay bridge in san francisco. and you

definitely felt the chill in the air today. right now in san francisco, it's 50 degrees. oakland 47, hayward, cooler at 46 and san jose 50. also in the mid 40s, redwood city and half moon bay, and this time from mount tam. so you can see we don't have too much cloud cover, at least low clouds. and that's why the rain has been light, because we can see clear across the bay here from mount tam. but things are dropping down into the 40s in some spots. santa rosa still at 51, but petaluma already down to 41, and we're seeing some mid 40s also fairfield and concord, livermore at 43 degrees from mount sutro. we're showing you a pretty view of san francisco. here's what you can expect. so until about 7:00 tomorrow morning, we'll continue to see these light spotty showers. and then we're going to see some very cold mornings starting tomorrow morning. and this will continue actually through wednesday. there's also a frost advisory. and i'll show you that in a little bit. and as i mentioned, gusty winds, especially in the hills of the north bay with this pattern. so

tonight's lows will drop into the 30s in some spots like lakeport near freezing at 32 degrees. we'll see low 40s around the bay like san francisco san mateo at 43, san jose 39. also chilly for the east bay interior valleys like livermore 36 degrees. so with that, there is a frost advisory for the east bay hills, the santa clara hills. so the areas highlighted in blue where temperatures will be down to near freezing levels at 32 degrees. frost is expected to form in some of these areas, and with our light rain comes the winter weather advisory in the sierra until 4:00 tomorrow morning. we could see up to six inches of snow above 5000ft, so just be careful. there will be strong gusts. driving will be difficult, but then the freeze watch kicks in tomorrow night through wednesday morning. this is where these areas highlighted in blue. temperatures may drop down to 26 degrees. so tomorrow's highs look very similar to

responding to this emergency. part of a state program for incarcerated men and women. >> i knew that the firefighting program was going to be the fastest avenue for me to get home to my son. firefighting has always been a passion of mine. >> most who are eligible and choose to join can qualify for sentence reductions up to two days off their sentences. for every day on a fire crew, they earn up to roughly $10 a day, plus an extra dollar during emergencies. mckinney says he's worked as long as 24 hours. >> it was a lot. but, you know, they keep the water coming, they keep food coming. and, you know, you feed off the energy of the other guys. y'all are doing lifesaving work. we have a responsibility to show our gratitude as a state for that. >> california state assembly member isaac bryan and government officials met with some of these firefighters at their base camp in pasadena. bryan just introduced legislation to increase their pay. >> what ab 247 says is that if you are incarcerated and you are actively fighting a wildfire, you are on the front line. you

are on the fire line doing that lifesaving work. you should be compensated at the same rate as the lowest paid person who's not incarcerated. >> mckinney and almanza have been moved by the outpouring of support from many in the public. >> it just feels like sometimes you're tucked away, you know, and no one gets to. you don't get to share those experiences with nobody. so when the community comes out and shows the love and the outpouring, it just really feels good. you know, it feels like someone cares and someone knows what you're doing. >> one of the organizations that has advocated with and for these firefighters is the anti-recidivism coalition. they helped write a bill to expunge their records. the organization also helps run a firefighter training and reentry program that creates a pathway for a career upon release. >> i have about two years left on my sentence, so by the time that it's over, i should be pretty dialed in and know what i'm doing, so i'm excited to pursue that. >> anabel munoz abc seven. >> egg prices are expected to get higher. an outlook fm the usda predicts a 20% increase

>> all right, one last check of the weather. all i could think of was during that story, people were dressed up in their parkas and their big furry hats. not quite that cold for us. >> i know. and for us, compared to the rest of the nation, we really have nothing to complain about. although it does feel chilly for the bay area and we're looking at live doppler seven again. we're seeing some light rain fall over parts of the bay area, but really we've only had a few hundredths of an inch and we won't get too much more overnight. the temperatures will be chilly though, especially in parts of the north bay dropping to the 30s like cloverdale 35, lakeport 32, ukiah 29. and then we'll see some mid and upper 30s in concord, antioch and livermore. it's going to be windy in the north bay mountains overnight through tomorrow morning. and also we could see some frost in the east bay hills and the santa clara hills too. tomorrow's temperatures will be similar to what we experienced today. temperatures generally between 55 to 60 degrees. so on the cooler side. but we will get some sunshine in parts of the north bay and then some. really cold temperatures come in tomorrow night

500 again after losing to the lakers by ten tonight at chase center, rookie center quinton post could not duplicate his 20 point performance we saw thursday night against chicago. he was held to eight points, but he did knock down a pair of threes and got some valuable minutes against lakers star anthony davis. looks like he's going to be a regular in steve kerr's rotation. and we spoke about that following tonight's game. all right quinton post a ten point loss to the lakers tonight. what did you guys l was the issue of why you didn't win this game tonight. >> first of all i just thought, you know, they made a lot of tough shots, especially a.d. i don't know, we just needed to be a little sharper, execute offensively. and i just thought it was tough for us to get stops and that really cost us the game personally. >> how much fun are you having getting out there and showing what you can do? >> i mean, the last few days have been a roller coaster. you
