$150,000 in damage to the building and a beloved restaurant in chinatown. serving up delicious dishes for more than a century is now closed. how the owner is fighting for it to still have a future. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> good evening, i'm dion lim. tonight, hundreds of kids in vallejo are left wondering when they'll be able to go back to school this weekend. someone stole so much copper wiring from solano widenmann leadership academy. they took out the entire electrical system. the campus is closed until the district can make repairs. abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with families and the superintendent, who calls the crime disgusting and disheartening. >> middle of the school year and this vallejo school is closed for learning. come monday, the more than 600 ks who attend classes here at600 ks solano wiedenmann leadership academy will instead be at home after the electrical system was knocked out by a thief or thieves.

>> upon further examination, we discovered, you know, that someone had broken in and has stripped all our copper wiring out of the breakers, essentially leaving the campus dark. >> family members of the kids who go to school here are angry. >> for some children, that's their only positive environment. that's the only safe haven they have. and to rob them from that is just inexcusable. it's really sad. >> jay stafford's sister is now out of school, and their family will take turns watching her this week. police tell us that no arrests have been made. vallejo city superintendent ruben aurelio says investigators are looking at surveillance video, but it was dark late friday into early saturday, and whoever did this took out the power. parents were told that a fix would likely take a week. aurelio says it could actually be a couple days or a couple of weeks. >> we're not flush with a bunch of money to all of a sudden replace, you know, thousands of

feet of wiring, copper wiring. right now, we have an estimate of it'll be somewhere between 150 to $250,000 just to get this campus back up. >> and it's just very sad. a lot is going on in vallejo right now. we are what we would like to call a lawless city. almost so much is going rampant, and it's just really sad that now the crime has affected our children. being able to attend school. >> aurelio says it's possible that extra school days could be added onto the end of the school year, but right now the focus is getting kids learning as quickly and safely as possible. >> we're going to be moving to get kids back into school as soon as possible, even if that means distributing the students and teachers and staff to other campuses. that can hold space, to have space that can hold them. >> we are a very strong community. we're very close knit. we have a lot of people who advocate in the community and do great things. i believe this is just one of those things that we will have to get over

and triumph over. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> now to a live look from downtown san francisco. things looking crisp and clear outside though. what you can't tell from this picture is that we are in for yet another chilly night. some spots even heading below freezing. so let's bring in abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian tracking those very cold and widespread temperatures. spencer. >> widespread is right, diane. this will be one of the coldest nights, area wide that we've had the entire winter. so let's take a look at our cold air alerts. we have a freeze warning and a frost advisory in effect for the entire bay area. most of the bay area from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. so in the area covered in blue, that's the frost advisory that includes the north bay interior valleys, the east bay hills and valleys, the san francisco bay shoreline. that's rather unusual. the entire area of the santa cruz mountains. and for the freeze warning, we're talking about the santa clara valley and the eastern santa clara hills. the area of the frost advisory will

see temperatures drop to 32 degrees in the area of the freeze warning. low temperatures will drop down to about 28 degrees. and here's a look at our projected lows for the overnight period. so you can see it's going to be quite cold overnight. only 1 or 2 locations will avoid having low temperatures dropping below 40 degrees. i'll give you a look at the complete accuweather seven day forecast, and some more cold mornings coming our way this week in just a few minutes dion. >> all right. sounds good spencer. thanks. now with temperatures taking a deep dive, there is concern about the unhoused population whoe living outside. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard looks at the impact of the big chill from the north bay. >> we might have a sweater. do you need a sweater? >> i would love a sweater. >> the safe team from petaluma people services center are making the rounds this winter, checking on unhoused folks like francisco and his dog, buddy. >> it's been really, really cold, brother. >> freezing overnight temperatures are expected this week. francisco says he'll camp outside, but appreciates outreach from the safe team.

alexis, gabe and her family's fight for justice for years. the 24 year old oakley woman you'll remember was killed three years ago, and that year was today. her ex-boyfriend died as officers tried to arrest him on murder charges. gabe's family and community held a vigil tonight, and abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows us how they hope to keep her memory alive. >> the candles are lit, but still no closure for the parents of alexis gabe. she was last seen at her ex-boyfriend's home in antioch in january 2022. investigators believe her ex-boyfriend killed her and disposed of her remains in garbage bags in the sierra foothills. >> it still really hurts. every day that you wake up without my daughter. >> officers killed the ex-boyfriend while trying to make an arrest. the family left looking for justice, and last week, they say they lost their last hope. >> the painful is when the they took the opportunity. that we

kindness day in alexis's honor. >> we believe spreading kindness is the one thing we can do, and i know times are tough, but if people can just pause for a day and do something kind for someone. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> thank you. >> developing news out of southern california tonight where they just cannot catch a break. rain has finally arrived, but it's causing multiple mudslides. a flood advisory for malibu is in effect until midnight. part of the pacific coast highway is even shut down because of mud and rocks on the road there. this is one of several mudslides in the burn area of the palisades fire, and it doesn't take much rain to cause flooding. and debris flows on these scorched hillsides. firefighters in los angeles reported multiple cars trapped in other spots. >> that water comes right into the communities that were so devastated by these tragic fires. >> some higher elevation spots are seeing snow tonight, showing

just how extreme the weather whiplash is for southern california. just weeks ago, the eaton fire was threatening mount wilson. and now, as you can see, it is covered in snow. well, containment is steadily climbing on the fire, smoldering across southern california. the eaton fire that devastated altadena is now 98% contained. the palisades fire in pacific palisades is at 90%. and last week's huge fire that forced evacuations along i-5 is now 95% contained. the los angeles area, though, has a long recovery road ahead. right now, you can go to red cross.org/abc to help the red cross support those in need in san francisco. a legendary chinatown restaurant served its last of its famous rice rolls today, but sam wu's closure might not be forever. the chef of the 116 year old restaurant is retiring, and throngs of customers packed the shop today for a final

down into the bay from mount tam. under clear skies, 48, in santa rosa, right now. 41 petaluma. napa. down to 38 degrees 49 in fairfield. 39 in concord, 35 in livermore. it's getting cold and it's going to get colder. so these are our forecast headlines. cold weather overnight. morning. frost and am frost and freeze alerts are in effect. next few days we'll see sunny skies, but lots of cold mornings coming our way through most of the week. excuse me. and at the end of the week, going into the weekend, rain is likely, which is quite a change from what's going to happen the next few days. let's talk about these cold air alerts. we have a freeze warning and frost advisory in effect between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m. tomorrow. so the area in the light blue is the area covered by the frost advisory that includes the north bay interior valleys, east bay hills and interior valleys. the san francisco bay shoreline, which is rarely included in these cold air alerts. all of the santa cruz mountains, and then for the freeze warning in that darker blue there, or purple that includes the

spokesperson told us they have just now started to replace them three months later, but it's been more than a year since these transit screens were damaged, and they still have not been replaced. keep in mind that thousands of attendees of the recent jp morgan healthcare conference walked right past them, and in february, san francisco will host the nba all star event. danny sauter just took over as supervisor for that section of downtown. >> the little things matter is people see them around the city. right. the graffiti, the glass, some of the disorder that adds up and that builds into the perception of san francisco not being safe. so i recognize that. i think we need to take that seriously. >> sauter has also called for hearings on why there are so few trash cans in the area. he also supports mayor lurie's proposal to increase foot patrol officers along market street. for now, empty buildings, empty storefronts and broken glass are an unwelcome mat for the
