arrests in his mass deportation campaign. immigration officials say they arrested nearly 1000 people across the country yesterday, up from 286 on saturday and 593 on friday, according to the washington post. trump has directed federal law enforcement to aggressively ramp up that number to up to 1500 per day. top trump administration officials, including border czar tom homan, visited chicago over the weekend for the beginning of the immigration crackdown there. >> are you a citizen? >> doctor phil, the tv host and trump supporter, live streaming the arrest. >> this truly is a targeted ice mission because they're not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply. i know that because i've been involved in this. >> near denver, federal agencies converging on what they describe as a makeshift nightclub, finding drugs, weapons and cash, and arresting 49 people, most of them alleged members of a

venezuelan gang. additional operations have been reported in arizona, california, nebraska, texas and georgia. >> it's sending a strong signal to the world our border is closed. if you're in the country illegally, you're on the table. you violated the crime. >> the white house claimed victory overnight in a showdown with colombia over accepting flights of deported migrants. president trump had threatened steep tariffs on imports after colombia's president blocked two u.s. military planes from landing. in a statement last night, the white house saying the government of colombia has agreed to all of president trump's terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of deported migrants. meanwhile, brazil's government expressing outrage after dozens of migrants deported from the u.s. arrived by plane in handcuffs, claiming they were beaten and denied bathroom access. brazil, calling it a flagrant disregard for their rights. back in the u.s, immigrant rights groups are now ramping up their efforts, staffing tip lines to report locations of federal agents and

hosting know your rights meetings in the days and weeks ahead. nikole d'antonio, abc news, washington. >> nicole, thank you. and the trump cabinet is taking shape. south dakota governor kristi noem was confirmed and sworn in as homeland security secretary. she will oversee ice and the other agencies tasked with executing trump's border security plan. >> we turn now to the fragile mideast cease fire, surviving its first major test. palestinians are returning to northern gaza for the first time in over a year. this morning, they were blocked after israel accused hamas of violating the cease fire. but now a civilian hostage is set to be freed this week. as abc's britt clinton reports, she was supposed to be among the hostages released two days ago. >> we saw emotional reunions for those four hostages finally back with their loved ones this weekend. and we anticipate another hostage prisoner exchange on saturday on top of thursday's hostage release. but this deal is extremely precarious.

>> those women are among seven hostages released so far as part of the first phase of the cease fire. >> now to southern california, where some heavy rain is both a blessing and a curse. the area needs the rain, but it also is causing mudslide concerns in the recent burn areas. abc's alison kosik reports. >> reporter this morning, the first significant rain in southern california in months is triggering fears of flooding and mudslides like this for vehicles stuck in the mud in woodland hills and elsewhere. mud forcing street closures. >> they are trying to clear this road where this mudslide just came down. thick mud. it is this worry. as the rains are falling all the way upanyon roads. >> so we brought in extra crews to help with the debris flow or the risk of flooding. >> this home surviving the palisades fire last week, only to be split in half in a landslide. >> these slopes have become fragile. the soil that is supporting your home have all become fragile and damaged, if you will, due to the events that

we've had. even when it's not raining. >> corey vaughns lost his home in the fire. he and his dad now relying on sandbags to protect his grandmother's house. >> if we. >> have water damage, that just adds another situation on top of already what we're going through. >> meanwhile, new clues on what may have started the massive eden fire, which left 17 people dead. the l.a. times posting new video from a law firm that's suing power company southern california edison, claiming the fire may have ignited at a transmission tower moments after flashes of blue and white light flared near the electrical equipment. the power company saying it's fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. southern california edison has said it has no record of an electrical failure on lines in that area. as for the rain today, the worst of it is expected to end this morning. rhiannon. andrew. >> alison. thank you. a major warm up is coming across the eastern half of the u.s. 50s in

omaha. starting tomorrow, chicago and the twin cities getting into the 40s, which must feel like the hundreds, really, with the deep freeze we've had these past couple of weeks. all of those temperatures are about 15 degrees above average. >> well, stargazers are getting quite a treat overnight. a planetary parade is visible in the sky. observers sharing images. look at this. of six planets venus, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus and neptune. they were not visible in the same image because of the enormous distances between them. venus, mars, jupiter, saturn are all visible to the naked eye this month and for part of february. >> sunday marked five years since the helicopter crash that killed basketball hall of famer kobe bryant. nine people died when the aircraft carrying bryant, his daughter gigi and seven others went down in calabasas, california, on sunday. the lakers posted a picture of kobe and gigi on social media, accompanied by the words always in our hearts. the

is going to be. >> back now, with the freighter that was stuck in the ice of lake erie for several days before being freed over the weekend. the 17 crew members on board are now fine. they are sailing toward a port in ontario, canada, where the ship will remain for the rest of winter. it got stuck in the ice last wednesday after delivering wheat in buffalo, and was not freed until saturday. >> anyone who has bought eggs recently knows how prices are spiking. it's because of the bird flu outbreak, which experts say is proving to be really difficult to track. abc's erielle reshef has more. >> reporter the country's bird flu outbreak is creating egg shortages and sending prices soaring. >> i couldn't believe it. we just bought eggs and they were like $1,112. >> at least 36 million egg laying chickens have ■been killd

in recent months to prevent the spread of the virus. workers on this long island, new york farm are euthanizing nearly 100,000 ducks after bird flu was detected there. >> we need better surveillance on farms. >> we need better surveillance in. >> the livestock because we need. >> to know where this virus is spreading. >> there has been no evidence of person to person spread, but at least 67 people have been infected and one person has died. india is urging more testing and vigilance in communities where livestock has tested positive for bird flu, to ensure it is not spreading more widely. erielle reshef, abc news, new york. >> ariel thank you. an apple watch is being credited with saving an injured skier in washington state. video shows the victim's friend waving down a helicopter east of seattle. crews say they received an sos call from the watch. the skier suffered a leg injury after falling 1000ft. crew recovered a third person who was also hurt, and all three are now recovering.
