area group with extreme beliefs. tonight, we're learning more about the one couple at the center of it all. good evening. thanks for being here. i'm julian glover. >> and i'm ama daetz. the man accused of killing his vallejo landlord was in solano county court today. >> abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley was there and explains how the suspect could be tied to last week's deadly shooting of that border agent in vermont. >> 22 year old maximillian snyder appeared before judge kaufman in solano county superior court on tuesday, facing a murder charge with two enhancements. he's accused of lying in wait and killing his 82 year old vallejo landlord, curtis linde, on january 17th. but investigators say lin's death was connected to another attack on him back in 2022. lin's family posted on gofundme saying curtis was the victim of an unprovoked, violent attack by three young adults on his vallejo property. he miraculously survived being stabbed multiple times, had a sword impaled through his chest,

and ultimately lost his right eye. according to the gofundme. according to the charging documents, curtis, the victim, was a witness to a crime who was intentionally killed for the purpose of preventing his testimony in a criminal proceeding. >> it's tragic and it shakes the whole foundation of the criminal justice system. when a witness, uh, is then murdered. >> on a linkedin profile that appears to be connected to the suspect, maximillian snyder studied at a private school in washington state and at the university of oxford, even attending a stanford coding camp one summer. investigators are looking into a possible connection between lin's murder on january 17th and another murder in vermont on january 20th, involving snyder's fiance, teresa youngblood. >> the connection is to a case in vermont with a suspect named teresa youngblood. she's a 21 year old, also from the same area of washington, charged in

the fatal shooting death of a border patrol agent in vermont last week. that connection there is that they had applied for a marriage license together in november in washington. there appears to be some connections to a loosely affiliated group of people and ideology based out of the bay area, with some interesting beliefs. we know they believe in veganism. they have a history of some violent incidents. >> snyder was shackled in court and did not speak. the defendant's attorney requested that the arraignment be postponed until february 6th. meanwhile, snyder is being held in custody with no bail in solano county. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> turning now to president trump's first 100 days in office. today, a federal judge temporarily blocked a trump administration freeze on federal grants and loans that could total trillions of dollars. the white house had planned to start the pause as they begin a review of federal spending. it sparked confusion and panic among organizations across the country

and the bay area that rely on federal dollars. >> we are working hard to assess impacts. we're also receiving reports from some programs and service providers that they've received stop notices from the federal government to cease further activity under their contracts and programs, including significant programs that affect social services, such as refugee assistance programs here in our county. >> the administrative state pauses the freeze until monday. today, president trump also signed an executive order aimed at curtailing gender transitions for people under age 19 and new homeland security secretary kristi noem announced this morning federal immigration agents had begun an enforcement action in new york city. >> sky seven was overhead as demonstrators in san jose marched to protest the trump administration's mass deportation sweeps happening all across the country. the protest temporarily blocked traffic at one intersection and got even larger when students from overfelt high school in san jose joined in. they walked out of

class and held their own rally on campus before joining the demonstrations this afternoon. >> as fears continue over mass deportation sweeps today, san francisco city leaders and community advocates joined forces to reaffirm the city's commitment to its sanctuary status. abc seven news reporter luz pena has the latest on the city's plan for responding to ice agents. >> as raids across the country intensify. san francisco city officials are making their stance clear. >> first and foremost, we are a sanctuary city. >> in 1989, san francisco passed the city and county of refuge ordinance, or sanctuary ordinance. today, the board of supervisors are voting to reaffirm this. >> san francisco. we value our immigrant communities. >> standing next to some of the most influential leaders of the city, san francisco city attorney david chu explained what this means. >> our policy simply says you cannot deputize local law enforcement as ice agents with

scarce resources. we have to prioritize those resources to fight crime, not break up families. >> according to the migration policy institute, in 2019, there were an estimated 43,000 people in the city, counted as unauthorized population. it's unclear how much of the population changed in the years following the pandemic, but as immigration rates loom, local law enforcement leaders highlighted their positions. >> the san francisco police department does not assist in immigration raids. >> my office is unique in that we are, through the ordinance, the only office that may contact federal immigration officials if they ask. when a serious or violent felon is leaving our custody. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins urging the immigrant community to report any crimes without fear. >> my office is doing nothing in coordination with any federal immigration enforcement

whatsoever, that you are safe to come forward and that we will protect our victims and witnesses. >> the trump administration has been vocal about sanctuary cities recently, prompting federal prosecutors to investigate officials who interfere with immigration enforcement operations and threatening them with criminal charges. >> if he chooses to violate the rule of law, we will meet him in court. >> in san francisco. luz pena, abc seven news. >> if you or someone you know is dealing with a situation involving rights, racism or just needs support, there is help available and it's not far away. go to abc seven news.com slash. take action for a list of local resources. >> san francisco police shot and killed a man following a deadly standoff early this morning. he was suspected in a shooting. this all happened in the soma neighborhood near ninth and mission streets. that is just a few blocks away from civic center plaza. witnesses say the gunman shot the owner of a vape shot shop and ran and hid inside of a nearby building. police called in reinforcements, but they say the suspect refused to

come out. at some point, officers started shooting at the man. >> i saw somebody come out of the building with a gun and shooting like three times point blank range. it was slow motion, you know, like, i mean, there was nothing i could do about it, you know, it happened so fast, but yet it was so slow. >> police say they did find a gun at the crime scene. the victim was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. >> four people are under arrest in the south bay for the attempted murder of two san jose police officers. police released surveillance video of the car involved in the attack on january 21st. two plainclothes officers were inside an unmarked vehicle around 10:30 p.m. at melbourne boulevard and mclaughlin avenue. police say the suspects pulled up in another car and opened fire. investigators say the suspects may have thought they were shooting at rival gang members. neither of the officers was injured in the incident. >> happening right now. the alameda county board of supervisors is currently meeting to select the county's next district attorney. there are

seven candidates up for the job. abc seven news reporter tim johns has been tracking the meeting for us all afternoon. he's joining us live now in the newsroom with the latest updates. tim. >> yeah, julian. this entire process, of course, stemming from the recall of previous alameda county district attorney pamela price price was recalled by voters back in november. since then, the board of supervisors has received dozens of applications from people who want to replace her. they'll pick one person out of seven finalists today. now, of those seven finalists, several worked for bay area district attorney's offices. right now, others work for local governments, the state attorney general's office. and there is one judge. whoever is selected will officially be sworn in as da early next month, and serve in the role until the next general election in 2026. the new district attorney will step into the role at a time of increased scrutiny for the da's office. price faced heavy criticism over crime rates in places like oakland, as well as her perceived soft on crime persona. during today's meeting, many public speakers expressed their desire to work with whoever the new, the whoever the

new da is. pardon me? to move the county forward. >> we are here to work together. and so after today, whatever decision is made, we want to come together with the district attorney, whether it's your choice or not. we want to do something different in alameda county. >> all seven of the finalists have expressed their desire to run for the da position in 2026 if they are selected. and as for today's meeting, there are over 100 people who signed up to speak, so it could still be some time before we know who the new da is. but for now, i'm live in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> okay, tim. thank you. after the break, the effort to save sonoma state athletics department gets a backing from a few nba stars. and we're going to hear from one of them. >> plus, we're taking a live look outside right now looking at the conditions as we get ready for yet another chilly night ahead. we'll check in with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for the details. abc seven news at five will be right back.

start. he played two seasons with coach rich shaywitz. >> i think this was the best decision i made in my career was going to sonoma state. just going to a place that believed in me, had a plan for me and just allowed me to be me. >> wells joined the fight to save the athletics program after sonoma state announced last week it would cut all of its athletic programs next year. on tuesday, dozens of concerned students, staff, coaches and alumni spoke out at a cal state university board of trustees meeting. >> do not take this life changing opportunity away from young people. >> i am deeply disturbed at the manner in which sonoma state leadership came to their decision, and then announced it via email. >> i talked to one a couple of athletes. they say it feels like the rug is being pulled out from underneath them. >> obviously, i know a lot of a lot of players that are still playing there and just hearing their stories and how they feel. i mean, it sucks, especially when you're playing a sport you love. >> wells took to social media to show his support for the movement under the hashtag save seawolves athletics. >> yeah. hashtag save seawolves

athletics. i was made aware of this, the hashtag and just wanted to spread it. so any opportunity i can. my teammate john moran, he he replied to it and yeah just just trying to bring awareness however i can. >> last week, coaches filed a complaint with the office of civil rights on behalf of minority athletes. it calls for an investigation into the school's decision, which they say unfairly targets minority students. on thursday, the university plans to host a town hall meeting to address the cuts. wells is still working with his former coach, figuring out what they can do next to save the sonoma state athletic program. >> hopefully i'll be able to be able to be down there soon and have my voice heard. the reason i'm here today is because sonoma state suzanne phan. >> abc seven news. >> still ahead. it's only happened six times in franchise history, but today, the warriors announced plans to hang yet another jersey in the rafters. what steve kerr and steph curry have to say

some changes underway as we speak. first, let's take a look at this live picture that's absolutely spectacular from our sky star camera at fisherman's wharf. it's giving you a view like no other. as we look out towards the bay, you can see alcatraz in the distance. while that vantage point is clear, we do have some patchy fog right near the coast. wind chill with us this morning. it was down to 24 degrees in fairfield. yeah, it was cold. 28 napa airport, livermore. 30 san jose, 36 degrees. we do have cold weather alerts, but tonight it's not as widespread. we're talking about frost advisory and the lighter blue for the inland valleys. 1 to 9 a.m. tomorrow. and eastern santa clara hills is under a freeze warning. temperatures down to the upper 20s there. the following day, thursday morning, more areas will go under a freeze watch. temperatures down to freezing. so the coldest spots. be aware of this high pressure still keeping us dry, but not for long. we're starting to see some changes underway as we are tracking some fog on live doppler seven. hopefully rain

later on this week. a gorgeous view from our mount tam cam right now 52, in the city. 54 oakland, hayward, san jose. you're at 52 degrees in half moon bay, and you can see a nice sunny view from san jose. right now it is in the mid 50s from santa rosa to fairfield, 59 in concord, 57 livermore emeryville. cameras showing you a view of oakland. a little haze in the air overnight. chilly with areas of fog. tomorrow it's a cooler afternoon and friday through early next week. we are expecting periods of wet weather. temperatures have already started to drop today as we head into tonight, marine influence starts to make its presence known across parts of our bayside communities. tomorrow morning, starting off with the fog and then later in the afternoon inland and around the bay, you'll see plenty of sun. temperatures. first thing in the morning you're going to see low 30s to mid 40s. not quite as cold as it has been, as we will have that extra blanket of cloud cover around tomorrow afternoon. you're looking at highs that will range from the low 50s to the low 60s, with lingering fog right near the

coast. now, i want to show you what's going to happen later on in the week. stays dry until friday. that's when our first rain maker comes in. it's an atmospheric river for the pacific northwest. far northern california gets the highest rain totals as we head into saturday. it is wet across the bay area. it's a rain snow mix in the sierra and as you will notice, this pattern continues going into early next week. at this point, we will take this change and we welcome the rain and the snow as you know. so let's talk about rainfall through sunday night. over an inch there in ukiah, but only eight hundredths in san jose. as we add on early next week, you will see that some places will pick up as much as two inches of rain. certainly looking like more wet weather in the forecast through at least the early part of next week. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it is the start of lunar new year festivities tomorrow. year of the snake, and it's going to be dry until friday. level one for the end of january. beginning of february.
