starts right now. >> and new at six. a bad crash in oakland that sent people to the hospital involving multiple vehicles and an ac transit bus. i mean, look at this damage. ac transit says a number 73 bus was turning from hegenberger road onto san leandro street near the coliseum bart station when thehe crash happened. it was around 330. a speeding white acura suv hit a gray honda, which caused a chain reaction involving other cars and the bus. several people were taken away by ambulances, including one patient in handcuffs. one bus passenger was taken to the hospital with a cut lip. the bus driver was okay. several oakland police officers and vehicles were on scene as well, along with the alameda county sheriff's office and oakland fire department. we are working to find out more about the circumstances of this crash. good evening, i'm ahmad. >> and i'm julian glover. we'll stick with the developing news happening in the east bay. alameda county is going to choose its next district attorney tonight. there are

seven candidates up for the job and the board of supervisors they're meeting right now. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is following this story for us and joins us live with an update. tim. >> yeah. julian. ama, over 100 people signed up to speak during today's public comment at this special meeting that just wrapped up moments ago, and supervisors are now hearing from the candidates themselves before they vote. now, this entire process, of course, stemming from the recall of previous alameda county da, pamela price. price was recalled by voters back in november. since then, the board of supervisors has received dozens of applications from people who want to replace her. they'll pick one out of seven finalists tonight. now, of those seven finalists, seven worked for bay area district attorney offices. right now, others work for local governments, the state attorney general's office, and there is also one judge. whoever is selected will officially be sworn in as da early next month and serve in the role until the next general election in 2026. the new da will step into the role at a time of increased scrutiny for the office. price faced heavy criticism over crime rates in places like oakland, as well as her perceived soft on

crime persona. during today's meeting, many public speakers expressed their desire to work with whoever the new district attorney is to move the county forward. >> we are here to work together. and so after today, whatever decision is made, we want to come together with the district attorney, whether it's your choice or not. we want to do something different in alameda county. >> all seven of the finalists have expressed their desire to run for the da position in 2026. if they are selected, and the board will go through three rounds of voting before selecting a new da. those votes could happen any minute now, but for now, i'm live in the studio. tim johns, abc seven news. >> we'll stay on top of it. thank you so much, tim. happening right now. lateefah simon, the newly elected east bay representative is at ucsf benioff children's hospital in oakland to discuss health care under the trump administration, a website that states use to get medicaid payments from the federal government had a temporary outage today, which raised some concern. this after president trump ordered a pause

on federal grants. the website is back up and running, and the outage appears to be unrelated. today, president trump signed an executive order banning federally funded programs from helping people under 19 years old access gender affirming care. the president also offered federal workers a buyout with seven months pay to shrink. the government, and a federal judge blocked the new move by the white house budget office to pause all federal grants and loans. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes live for us in san jose with a closer look at the funding freeze and the bay area groups that could be affected by this. zach. >> yeah. the federal judge paused that funding freeze just before it was set to take effect at 2 p.m. our time and a lot of local nonprofits have been scrambling. this morning i heard from second harvest of silicon valley, who said that they were analyzing the implications. and san francisco aids foundation also put a statement out saying they're deeply concerned. that's been the story from a lot of the local nonprofits and also the national council representing many of them.

>> this was very surprising. total blindside did not see it coming. >> confusion tuesday for habitat for humanity east bay, silicon valley. it comes after a memo by the office of management and budget directed all federal agencies to stop any federal grants and loans that might conflict with president trump's executive orders. habitat for humanity chapters across the state relying heavily on federal grant money. >> this could mean it's well over $30 million, could be as high as $50 million. >> the national council of nonprofits telling us that that confusion was shared by hundreds of thousands of other nonprofits immediately after the news was announced. >> downright frightened, wondering what is happening, wondering if they are affected or exempted. >> the confusion and uncertainty not just shared among nonprofits, but local governments. also, santa clara county's executive gave the board of supervisors an update tuesday. >> we are working hard to assess impacts. we're also receiving reports from some programs and service providers that they've

received stop notices from the federal government to cease further activity under their contracts and programs, including significant programs that affect social services, such as refugee assistance programs here in our county. >> in tuesday's white house press briefing, press secretary caroline leavitt was asked repeatedly to clarify which programs were being impacted by the federal pause. she said programs that provide direct assistance to americans would not be affected. >> social security, medicare, welfare benefits, medicaid, food stamps that will not be impacted by this federal pause. >> but throughout the day, states had reported that online portals used to get funds for emergency aid, head start, community health centers and medicaid were experiencing outages. six attorneys general, including california's rob bonta, announced they were suing the trump administration to stop the freeze. >> we will not stand by while the president attempts to disrupt vital programs that feed our kids, provide medical care to our families, and support housing in our communities.

>> now, also planning a lawsuit is a national council of nonprofits who you heard from there? in the piece, they say they're filing that lawsuit to get a temporary restraining order to block the order from going into effect. now, in the meantime, they have put out ae call to nonprofits for them to reach out to them, to let them know how and if they are being affected, as they all work together to analyze how this is going to impact them. right now. live in the south bay zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> zach, thank you. as arrests continue across the country by immigration and customs enforcement, san francisco city officials are making their stance clear. today, the board of supervisors voted to reaffirm san francisco as a sanctuary city. san francisco first passed the so-called refuge ordinance in 1989. city attorney david chu explains. >> our policy simply says you cannot deputize local law enforcement as ice agents with scarce resources. we have to prioritize those resources to fight crime, not break up

napa. some of our coldest spots. 30 in livermore. you can see it was around freezing to slightly above from san jose to half moon bay to redwood city. now we do have frost advisories going up once again tomorrow morning, but it's a limited area. north bay valleys, santa clara valley and then the eastern santa clara hills is under a freeze warning. temperatures will drop down, but not quite as low as they were this morning. so let's go hour by hour. certainly fog and along the coast starts to advance a little bit by 9:00. you're already in the 40s. by tomorrow morning we're looking at 30s. 40s, even some fog. but that fog will keep us insulated. we o have a freeze watch that goes up thursday morning as another chilly morning is ahead. but beyond that, we are tracking the return of some wet weather beginning friday. and really, this is a quick glimpse going into next monday. just over two inches is what this model wants to put out for santa rosa. 8/10 in oakland. julian. >> thank you so much sandhya. a big loss for jack london square

in oakland. abc seven news has confirmed that the waterfront hotel will close on friday. that will leave just one hotel, the jack london inn, in the entire neighborhood. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke with local business owners worried about how this will impact their bottom line. >> on friday, the upscale waterfront hotel in oakland's jack london square will close. >> it's here that they're leaving. is very disappointing, but understandable, actually. >> why? understandable? >> because the traffic in jack london is so slow. >> derek johnson runs the popular home of chicken and waffles restaurant in jack london square. he says the waterfront hotel closing is a big deal because small mom and pop stores like his are dependent on the big anchors. >> i know a lot of people want to keep oakland very. mind me, i'm a ma and pa, but the ma and pa, my sales were triple when i had a fridays el torito's when i had all of that surrounding me. >> in a statement to abc seven news, the hotel did not give reasons about why it's closing, only to say effective january

31st, 2025, hyatt will no longer be operating the waterfront hotel, and we understand that the property will no longer be operated as a hotel at that time. >> that is a big hit. it is extremely frustrating that we have hotels closing. >> former oakland city council member lauren taylor, who's running for oakland mayor in april's special election, says the city has to do more to keep businesses from leaving. >> we've got to work aggressively to fill them back up, to find another operator for the hotel, to find other folks to run the business that are anchored here, able to commit for a longer term. and we will support them because oakland has to be open for business. >> oakland city council member carol fife, who represents district three where jack london square is located, wasn't available for comment, but adds dave and buster's restaurant will be opening in a couple of months. >> dave and buster's is coming in, which is a good sign, but we need more than just restaurants are not going to carry a city. at the end of the day, we need to figure out how to get retail and some major national chains

i totally, totally understand. we're adding a ton of sensors. as soon as something comes in contact with the power line, it'll turn off so that there's not a risk that it's gonna fall to the ground and start a fire. okay. and i want you to be able to feel the improvements. we've been able to reduce wildfire risk from our equipment by over 90%. that's something i want to believe. and forth about a report by an independent investigator that says the sheriff has abused her power while in office, had an inappropriate relationship with her chief of staff, and sent out racist and homophobic text messages. sheriff cristina corpus, of course, denies those allegations. the sheriff's office has provided law enforcement in millbrae since 2012. the city of san carlos, which is also protected by the sheriff's office. cast a vote of no confidence to san mateo county, has also voted no confidence. classes will begin tomorrow at new school sites in vallejo. after thieves stole so much copper wiring from the building of solano whitman leadership academy that the school is closed indefinitely. more than 600 students are affected by this. vallejo city unified originally canceled classes for the entire week. well, now the district is sharing six alternative campuses where students can go. parents have to sign up their kids for the backup campuses. and also happening tomorrow, san

francisco will take the next step on mayor daniel lowery's priority legislation to address the fentanyl crisis. abc seven news political reporter monica madden has a look at those negotiations inside of city hall, on a topic that's a part of building a better bay area. >> we have to treat this emergency like the crisis that it is, and we have to treat it with urgency. >> in a tuesday interview on abc seven news, san francisco mayor daniel lowery lobbied for his priority legislation. >> we're not just taking people from the street to sf general, but we can do a drop off center that's friendly for police. people can get the help that they need. we're going to stand up 1500 more shelter beds. >> now he's lobbying the board of supervisors to approve his plan. that would cut city red tape to address the fentanyl crisis. >> if we don't pass this ordinance, we. in order to achieve what we want to achieve, we would have to go to the board 50 different times. and then the process would be about 6 to 12 months on each of those.

>> lowery's proposal includes allowing his office to seek private sector donations for funding public safety projects, sending more police to sixth street to tackle drug dealing, and expediting the approval process for city contracts related to homelessness, public safety and addiction. what happens to the mayor's initial proposals in how many yes votes he gets will be the first major test of one of his big goals of uniting the board of supervisors. the package now heads to the city's budget committee wednesday, where multiple city hall sources tell us they expect some modifications to appease reluctant supervisors. >> there's no way in the world we should be giving te mayor dictatorship authority here. >> supervisor shamann walton says he agrees with the end goal, but still thinks the overall plan lacks details. >> right now we just have a legislation in front of us that says, let's waive all of our contract authority, let's waive behested payment. but at the end of the day, there's no plan into what we're going to see. he's just saying we'll have 1500 beds somehow, some way. but how?

>> right now, six supervisors, including the board president, are a yes vote. while that's enough to pass the package, supporters say they want close to unanimous support. >> we want this to have as much support as possible. we think it sends a strong message. >> monica madden, abc seven news. >> the san francisco board of supervisors today voted against an appeal about the controversial valencia street bike lane that exempts the project from environmental review. some businesses had appealed the decision to move the bike lane from the center to the side of the road, saying an environmental review was needed. sfmta already approved removing the center running lanes. santa clara county supervisors have voted against a ban on artificial turf on all county owned properties. it's been a contentious issue in the county for several months. this afternoon, the board heard research about the microplastics in turf fields and their impact on the environment. many business owners, soccer players and parents voiced concerns about the potential ban, saying the need for playing fields is high across the county and

artificial turf can be used more often than grass fields. >> let's get another check of the forecast now. sandhya told us some rain might be coming along soon enough. >> yes. let's find out the timing of it all. sandhya. >> yeah, it's going to all start on friday. julian and i want to show you our rain chances as we take a look at the next six days. it is really encouraging to see rain. chances are increasing. start looking for those umbrellas. i know they've probably been buried considering we only had spotty showers over the weekend and not everybody saw the wet weather. as a matter of fact, some areas haven't seen rain in three weeks, so high pressure is still going to control the weather temporarily before the rain arrives later this week. we do have some fog in patches right along the coastline that's going to expand as the night goes on. a beautiful view from our pier 39 camera. temperatures in the low 50s. san francisco, oakland right now, redwood city, half moon bay, 54, in san jose. and from okay, you can certainly see a little bit of gray there in the distance 49 degrees in santa rosa, 46. in petaluma we

have a 54 in concord and 51 degrees in livermore. clear skies in santa cruz overnight, chilly with areas of fog. tomorrow, cooler afternoon coming your way. and then friday through early next week. we do have periods of wet weather in the forecast, which we certainly welcome as we go, hour by hour, 7:00 tonight we've got the fog around around the coast and around the bay tomorrow morning as we start the day and then the fog will pull back, but the coast will still have a little bit of that hanging around well into the afternoon. so morning temperatures will range mainly from the 30s to the 40s. now it's going to be chilly, but not quite as cold as we've seen in previous days because of the insulation from the cloud cover. so 35 livermore 34, santa rosa 35. in napa. these are just some of the temperatures. looking at your afternoon highs, anywhere from the low 50s to the low 60s, sunshine around the bay and inland coastside some fog and sun. here's the setup. high pressure still keeping us dry for a couple more days. and then friday,

here comes a storm. it's an atmospheric river for the pacific northwest. northern california is going to get slammed with some quite a bit of wet weather, which obviously we know that they need as well. so here in the bay area we get the rain friday, saturday, some showers sunday there's the best chance going to be in the north bay as that rain line continues to shift towards the north, and then more wet weather coming in early next week. it is going to be a rain snow mix in the sierra for several days, as the snow levels are going to be pretty high up there now. rainfall projections through sunday. if you do have outdoor plans, look like this. about eight hundredths in san jose, all the way to over an inch in ukiah and clear lake, and then everyone else is in between that ad on early next week, and we've got up to two inches of rain at clear lake, almost a half an inch there in san jose. accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow is the start of lunar new year celebrations, and we do have the fog and the chill to start the morning, but it will remain dry through the day. increasing clouds on thursday and then a level

the new york stock exchange closed in the green today. it was a welcome change for both the nasdaq and s&p 500 fell sharply yesterday. the dow gained more than 136 points. the nasdaq is up more than 391 points, and the s&p 500 gained 55 points. stocks in american artificial intelligence companies rebounded today. they took a big hit yesterday following the emergence of a cheaper chinese competitor named deep seek. today, santa clara based nvidia, which makes ai chips, saw a nearly 9% rebound. it gained almost half of yesterday's historic loss of $600 billion of market value. mountain view's alphabet, the company behind ai chatbot gemini, went up nearly 2%.

>> abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley was there and explains the possible connection. >> 22 year old maximillian snyder appeared before judge kaufman in solano county superior court on tuesday, facing a murder charge with two enhancements. he's accused of lying in wait and killing his 82 year old vallejo landlord, curtis linde, on january 17th. but investigators say lin's death was connected to another attack on him back in 2022. lin's family posted on gofundme saying curtis was the victim of an unprovoked, violent attack by three young adults on his vallejo property. he miraculously survived being stabbed multiple times, had a sword impaled through his chest, and ultimately lost his right eye. according to the gofundme. according to the charging documents, curtis, the victim, was a witness to a crime who was intentionally killed for the purpose of preventing his testimony in a criminal proceeding. >> it's tragic and it shakes the

whole foundation of the criminal justice system. when a witness, uh, is then murdered. >> on a linkedin profile that appears to be connected to the suspect, maximillian snyder studied at a private school in washington state and at the university of oxford, even attending a stanford coding camp one summer. investigators are looking into a possible connection between lin's murder on january 17th and another murder in vermont on january 20th, involving snyder's fiance, teresa youngblood. >> the connection is to a case in vermont with a suspect named teresa youngb. she's a 21 year old, also from the same area of washington, charged in the fatal shooting death of a border patrol agent in vermont last week. that connection there is that they had applied for a marriage license together in november in washington. there appears to be some connections to a loosely affiliated group of people and ideology based out of the bay

area, with some interesting beliefs. we know they believe in veganism. they have a history of some violent incidents. >> snyder was shackled in court and did not speak. the defendant's attorney requested that the arraignment be postponed until february 6th. meanwhile, snyder is being held in custody with no bail in solano county. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. >> tonight, a new perspective on a shooting in san francisco, which ended with police killing the suspect after a standoff. we were telling you about this yesterday on abc seven news at six, when police warned the public to avoid the area of ninth and mission streets. witnesses say the gunman shot the owner of a cannabis shop around five yesterday. that man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. one woman told abc seven news what she saw. >> and the shooter was like right in front of him, but his gun was my direction and i just seen him go pop, pop, pop like that, like right in his face. >> police say the suspect hid in a nearby building and refused to

come out. and at some point, police shot him. they say they recovered a gun at the scene. >> four people have been arrested for the attempted murder of two san jose police officers. investigators believe the suspects may have thought they were shooting at rival gang members. >> when the suspects fired at the vehicle, they had no idea that they could possibly be officers. >> police released surveillance video of the car involved in the attack on two plainclothes officers on january 21st. the officers were on duty inside of an unmarked vehicle around 10:30 p.m. at melbourne avenue, a boulevard, and mclaughlin avenue. police say the suspects pulled up at another car and just started opening fire. one officer managed to get out of the car and shoot back as the suspects took off. the officers were not injured in this. you can get a detailed look at public safety, what it looks like where you live with our abc seven neighborhood safety tracker. you can find it at abc seven news.com or inside of the

abc seven news bay area app. >> we're following the story of walgreens plans to shut a dozen stores in san francisco, because now one store will remain open. the store on polk street near van ness is no longer on the list to close. walgreens says it made the decision. quote, after conducting a thorough review of the store's financial performance and considering opportunities for improvement. walgreens is closing 1200 stores nationwide this year. 11 stores in san francisco are still on the list to close by the end of next month. walgreens says rent, staffing and supply needs are reasons for the closures. an nba star is now joining the fight to help save the sonoma state university athletics program. last week, the school announced plans to eliminate the sports programs and some academic departments in an effort to address a $24 million deficit. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has been following the story and spoke to alum jalen wells today. >> the fight to save sonoma state university's athletics program is getting a big boost, thanks to nba star jalen wells.

with the elaborate dishes the holiday is known for. but the two do know the importance of preserving chinatown's culture and history. so much of it stowed away in boxes for decades. >> when we first set up the projector and we were watching the footage, i could tell it was my neighborhood. a lot of the landmarks, the buildings were the same uh, but all the things that were happening with the people. i was like, what is going on? this is crazy. >> the footage was shot by harry nearly six decades ago on film scraps a friend gave him, and a camera he learned how to use in grad school for a thesis project he never completed. >> because all this is going by so quickly and will soon be forgotten. if we didn't somehow pass those stories along. >> at seemingly every struggle for housing, health services, citizenship and representation

in chinatown in the 60s, 70s and 80s harry, a second generation resident, was there. his lens focused on this place he called home and the people fighting to improve it. >> rarely do the chinese in san francisco organize themselves to express an opinion on public issues, but that has changed. >> when you bring in people from the outside and they walk through some of the housing, shopping for groceries here, they can see that it's a different place. it has developed a life of its own and it hasn't changed. >> harry, now 89, was a minister and social worker at the time at the cameron house, putting him on the front line, caring for the most vulnerable in his community. his ambitions of producing a film on chinatown faded until he started sharing his stories with his son, josh. before those memories faded too. >> in the process, i remember i asked him, why didn't you tell us about all these things you

accomplished all the, you know, efforts you were part of? and he pretty much said, because you didn't ask, you know? and that's totally true. sometimes we don't appreciate what has happened before us. >> this forgotten history of chinatown is now preserved in the feature length documentary chinatown rising, released in 2019, showcasing the self-determination of the people and the resilience of the neighborhood, a project that brought father and son together and tested their patience. at times. >> when we were going through tough times in the production, he just said, this is fun, isn't it? and i'm like, i guess. >> i'm glad we didn't give up. i'm glad we listened to each other and i'm glad we were open to learning from each other. >> the chucks are hoping the film will continue to be a teaching tool for the next generation, as they work to get the film shown in more schools statewide.

district attorney for alameda county. the board of supervisors just chose ursula jones dixon in three rounds of voting tonight. jones dixon is in alameda county superior court judge. she previously worked as a deputy da for the county. she will be sworn in as da early next month and serve in the role until the next general election, which is scheduled for 2026. previous district attorney pamela price was recalled by voters back in november. >> the doomsday clock, which is a symbolic attempt to sew close we are to destroying the world, just moved to its closest point ever to midnight. >> it is now 8 midnight. >> midnight represents the moment when people will have made the earth uninhabitable. >> we set the clock closer to midnight because we do not see

time. as for all star weekend here in san francisco, the rosters were released for the rising stars challenge. used to be the rookie sophomore game. that will be friday, february 14th at chase center. the warriors have two players in the game trace jackson davis throwing it down hard. an obvious ch. and pat spencer, the former lacrosse star, will also be on the squad representing the santa cruz warriors. on to football. niners fullback kyle juszczyk and his fashion designer wife kristen, hosted almost 200 bay area kids today on the ea sports campus. the event, called feel the future, it's designed to let kids know that there are more opportunities to work in sports than just being a player, because your odds of making it to the pros is pretty slim. for instance, kristen has just launched launched a fashion brand in partnership with the nfl. they call it off season and it's fun as it was. juice is already looking forward to next year when the super bowl will be held at levi's stadium. >> to play a super bowl to win a super bowl in your home stadium. i mean, that's that's truly a dream come true. so we know it's a long road to that. so, you know, we can't just, you know,
