american airlines jet and a military helicopter. >> not sure how to process it. >> they were our future. it was mostly really promising. promising future skaters. >> i think for all of us, we have lost family. >> many on board that plane. members of the close knit skating community. good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm kristen z. just moments ago, abc news learned that the black boxes from the american airlines plane were recovered and are on their way now to the ntsb lab. we have team coverage this afternoon with the latest on the investigation. and later, tim john looks into the safety at risk at a local airport with the possible loss of its air traffic controllers. >> plus, abc seven news reporter zach fuentes will have reaction from the local skating community. we begin this afternoon with the latest on the investigation with reporter josh einiger on scene in dc. >> the last few seconds of a flight are among the most critical of the entire flight.

those pilots are focused on what's in front of them. they're looking at the runway. they're looking at their instruments. they are not looking to their right. and it was from the right that disaster arrived in a flash. the frantic search for survivors in the icy potomac gave way this morning to the grimmest reality. >> at this point, we don't believe there are any survivors. >> not a single survivor. after america's worst aviation disaster in a decade and a half. >> loss of life in an aviation accident is very unusual in the united states, and our heartfelt sorrow goes out to everyone that's affected. it affects us. it affects everyone around us. there are a lot of people hurting today. we will help find out what happened. we will do it factually and we will do it accurately. >> tonight, the ntsb has taken charge of the search for answers. after a routine night turned deadly. american eagle flight 5342 was inbound from wichita, kansas. its pilots cleared for landing. an army blackhawk helicopter was on a training mission. its pilots instructed to give way to the

american flight, but cameras on the ground captured the chopper, closing in and ramming the nearly full regional jet. >> it was lit up a very bright yellow uh, and there was a stream of sparks underneath the plane. >> in the nation's capital, military helicopters routinely share airspace, with commercial traffic in and out of national airport. but how did the blackhawk collide with that jet? the newly sworn in defense secretary says mistakes were made. >> we anticipate that the investigation will quickly be able to determine whether the aircraft was in the corridor and at the right altitude at the time of the incident. >> as one nation, we grieve for every precious soul that has been taken from us so suddenly, and we are a country of really, we are in mourning. >> by mid-afternoon, the recovery of the bodies had slowed, with rescue workers reporting they had found all the people they could without disturbing the fuselage, which had come to a rest upside down in the river. and because of the

fireball cameras captured on impact, crews are preparing for the possibility some of the victims may found. >> our focus right now is doing everything that we can to support all of those involved. this is devastating. it's we are all hurting incredibly. >> and american airlines has sent go teams here to reagan airport and also to wichita to try to help family members begin to process what they're going through right now. as for the ntsb. today was mostly an organizational day, but in the next day or two, they will start finally looking at the fuselage and the wreckage. chief among that, searching for the black boxes, the flight data recorders that could unlock so many mysteries about what happened here. they are still trapped in the wreckage, along with the bodies of as many as 30 victims. at reagan airport outside washington. josh einiger, abc seven news. >> and as we mentioned, the black boxes have been found. but members of the figure skating community have been absolutely

devastated by this news as it continues to unfold. >> abc seven news reporter zach fuentes spoke with locals in that skating community, who were just with some of the victims in the crash. he joins us live now from the south bay. zach. >> yeah. that's right. a retired local figure skater i spoke with was telling me just how small of a bubble this community is, and that many of them know each and other, especially when competing at the national level. so she did know many of the people who were on that plane. and right now, she and so many others are still trying to process what happened. images of young figure skaters doing what they love are now heartbreaking to look at. after officials confirm that there were no survivors in the midair crash in dc thursday night. paulina edmunds was just in wichita for the u.s. championships last week. >> i think everyone in the community is just so shocked right now and devastated. and so many people know either the people on the plane or know of the people on the plane. >> edmunds is a retired figure skater who represented the u.s.

in the 2014 winter olympics, getting her start in san jose. she's now a small business owner and has been a faculty member of the u.s. figure skating national development camp. >> a lot of these kids that were on the flight uh, i've worked with them in these figure skating camps. i've done classes. they've all taken my classes. so seeing their names and seeing photos of them, of course, i recognize these faces. and it is it's just heartbreaking. and not to mention that there were also coaches on this flight. >> six of the victims were from the skating club of boston. through tears, figure skating legend nancy kerrigan spoke to the media there thursday. >> but i just feel for the athletes, the skaters and their families. but anyone that was on that plane, not just the skaters, because it's just such a tragic event. >> 24 year old anthony ponomarenko is a san jose native. he was in kansas competing in the national figure skating championships. he took this picture on the rink with

other competitors, he said. initial reports of the plane crash included his name. >> so my parents called me panicked, thinking i could have potentially been on that flight. >> thankful to be safe, he's now grieving the loss of the many lives on that plane. >> to find out who was actually on that flight. it was. it was pretty heartbreaking. >> as the heartbreak continues, edmond says the tight knit figure skating community is coming together even stronger. >> it's just making us all, you know, of course, reach out to each other, make sure everyone in our own close circles are okay, and kind of seeing how we can lean on each other in this time, but it is just unimaginable what happened. >> yeah. other athletes we've heard from say they plan. they're planning to honor the lives lost at the world figure skating championships happening in boston. that's coming up near the end of march. right now, live in the san jose bureau. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> zach thank you. more reaction now from that tight knit skating community. bay area native and 1992 gold medalist kristi

yamaguchi tweeted, quote, my heart breaks for my skating community and all who are involved in the plane crash. too much is still unknown. sending love and prayers. 1984 olympic gold medalist and four time world champion scott hamilton wrote. there are no words, adding that his heart is shattered and asking for prayers for the families, and the san jose sharks expressed sadness as well, offering deepest sympathies to all of those impacted by the tragedy. >> since 2008, the ntsb national transportation safety board has investigated 145 mid-air collisions in the u.s. roughly half of them, 77 in total, have been in the last decade. now, there were 9 in 2024 of those total, 145 since 2008 71 were fatal in all 15 of the collisions since 2008, about 10% happened during approach, just like the one that we saw in washington, dc. former pilot and bay area resident sully sullenberger says airplanese safe, but mistakes can happen. >> we have in this country, you

pretty important because it's quite a change. the weather. a lot of rain in the forecast. >> next few days. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel here with a first look at what we can expect. hi, sandhya. >> hi, there. yeah, the rain is going to first start tomorrow. and then really continue. larry and kristen, off and on, all the way through much of the first half of next week. so enjoy the dry while it's here. from our mount tam cam you can see some peeks of sun through the clouds. we are tracking a level one for tomorrow and a level two storm for saturday. basically, it's one storm system, but it becomes an atmospheric river with live doppler seven. i want to show you where the flood risk is going up. pretty much all of the bay area from saturday morning to sunday morning, will start to notice that there is a possibility of flooding as we go, hour by hour tomorrow morning. it just starts out as a regular storm. 7:00 light to moderate rain by 11 a.m. most areas are getting wet and it turns over to scattered showers. as we head into saturday, you start to notice the heavier rain going into the afternoon, so it is a one fr

tomorrow. widespread morning rain, scattered afternoon evening showers, breezy and slick roadways. atmospheric river accompanying the storm. so by saturday, that's when you start to notice the storm goes to a level two downpours. with those gusty winds, flooding on the roadways is likely, especially minor roadway flooding and on the smaller streams and creeks. i'll be back with a full look at the timeline coming right up. kristen. >> thank you. in the south bay, a new housing project that could be both affordable and easily accessible to public transit is coming to san jose. the santa clara valley transportation authority, making the announcement this morning. 45 homes will be built at the light rail station. about a quarter of them are designated for extremely low income residents, earning 30% or less of the county's median income. and unlike other affordable housing projects, these homes are for sale, not rent. >> i really see this random station project as a game changer for so many families, and it's really what we need more of affordable transit,

connected homeownership for working families. >> officials say that the fifth housing project launched on vta property in the past year and a half. this one was the previous projects focused on rental units. >> new developments now in a $14 billion deal to merge two silicon valley based companies, the department of justice is now suing to block it. hewlett packard enterprise and juniper networks are the second and third largest players in the corporate wireless networking market. the doj suit claims the merger would reduce competition because the combined company would control 70% of the market, but the companies claim the merger would actually increase market competitiveness. >> our coverage of that deadly mid-air collision continues with a look at safety at bay area airports and one local airport coming close to losing its air traffic controllers. the investigation underway after a deadly attack at a south bay jail. and as we celebrate lunar new year in the upcoming chinese new year parade, the san francisco woman helping beautify

incarcerated men at santa clara county's elmwood jail. sheriff's office deputies found the victim in his bed during a routine welfare check. unconscious and suffering from severe life threatening injuries. william armelin with the san jose silicon valley naacp, says this attack lasted around 20 minutes. >> which is an eternity. i mean, 20 minutes on camera, in the full view and in a public dormitory setting in the jail again, is an eternity for something like this to occur. >> the victim was allegedly mistaken as a rival gang member before being brutally beaten. three men have been charged with attempted murder and torture and transferred to the main jail in san jose. santa clara county supervisor susan ellenberg says the details are horrific. >> the attack was well and carefully planned during the transition of folks in and out of the barracks to lunch. i have been told that the assault began in the bathroom where there are

no cameras, and then continued. >> out into a large dormitory style setting that's unique to elmwood jail compared to the more secure main county jail setting. >> we try to provide an open environment for individuals to recover and recuperate. that type of open bay living is suitable only for individuals who have proven to be not related to these type of potential gangs. >> this is not the first incident of violence at elmwood and across santa clara county. in-custody deaths doubled. armelin says this highlights the need for criminal justice reform. >> there is a clear pattern at elmwood and in our just in general county jail facilities of people being beaten, harmed, abused, of there being a lack of response or slow response or no response. >> the naacp is demanding change, so this never happens again. in santa clara county, dustin dorsey, abc7 news. >> a coalition of community groups is working to find answers to the overdose crisis

in san francisco. this first ever gathering was focused on the disparities in overdoses between racial groups. organizers say san francisco's black community is being hit especially hard. >> whether you be harm reduction is or abstinence based or faith based or or you believe in different approaches of recovery, it doesn't matter. aa, aa, aa. let's all come together and talk about some recommendations and some strategies, because some of the things that we're doing are not working. >> today's summit was put together by more than 30 community groups in tandem with the department of public health. >> it is fred korematsu day in california. korematsu was born in oakland, fought the illegal incarceration of tens of thousands of japanese americans during world war two. he was ultimately arrested and interned. decades later, his conviction was overturned, and in 1998, then-president bill clinton awarded him the presidential medal of freedom. then in 2010, california governor schwarzenegger signed a law recognizing january 30th as

reflect this. we have 40s and 50s at this hour. from our emeryville cameras, you can see the golden gate bridge and clouds stacked up. tomorrow. rain starts in the morning. it will be breezy. it becomes a storm. level two on saturday as an atmospheric river arrives, and then sunday through the middle of next week. wet pattern is going to continue. it's not all day, all the time, but it is going to be wet. so for tomorrow it's a level one. a light storm, widespread morning rain, scattered afternoon evening showers and we are looking at slick roadways and breezy conditions. it's a2a moderate strength for saturday. atmospheric river arrives. do expect downpours at times. gusty winds and flooding. urban flooding is going to be a concern by then. 7:00 tomorrow morning light to moderate rain. this looks like just the kind of storm we expect to see in the winter. it's raining at 11 a.m. in the afternoon and evening. you have those scattered showers, so carry the umbrellas for friday. saturday i would take your plan indoors if you can, especially during the morning hours when we have some of the heavier rain coming through 10:00, you

can see some moderate to heavy rain going in and then really scattered showers continuing into sunday before another round arrives next week. rainfall projections through sunday morning. you're looking at some of the higher totals. inch and a half to two, and a third of an inch up in the northern part of our viewing area, the santa cruz mountains. but it's going to be pretty evenly distributed half an inch, though, around mountain view and san jose winds coming with it tomorrow. it will get breezy to gusty at times, but not strong winds. you could see about 25 to 27 there. winter weather advisory tomorrow morning for the sierra until sunday morning above 6500ft1 to 18in. expected above 7000. so it's really going to be a rain snow mix at lake level up to two feet for the peaks with those gusty winds. certainly count on slow going travel, slippery roads and chain controls. 30s and 40s. on those temperatures in the morning, i would give yourself extra time for the commute to get to work, or if you are going out of town, because it may take you a little bit longer

to how life on earth began. >> and they found that key by sifting through piles of dust. abc news reporter andrew dymburt with the details. >> a breakthrough discovery from nasa. a sample from an asteroid holding the building blocks of life. >> the samples contain salts that formed in a liquid environment, like a lake, or maybe even an ocean, and organic molecules that are central to all life on earth. >> nasa's osiris-rex spacecraft returned four ounces of dust and pebbles from the asteroid bennu, the biggest cosmic haul yet from beyond the moon, researchers found amino acids and nitrogen in the form of ammonia. scientists say it's the strongest evidence that asteroids may be the reason that life developed here. >> this is telling us that not just the water, but some of the building blocks of life actually were seeded onto earth and other planets. >> and while this breakthrough might help solve why we're here, it raises other questions. >> how did life on earth originate? and also, what is the likelihood that there is life

airport is back open as officials investigate just exactly what led to the fatal collision between that american airlines jet and a military black hawk helicopter. >> abc news reporter christiane cordero has the latest from arlington. >> today, in frigid water and with planes flying overhead, officials in the nation's capital are searching for answers. >> we will look at the aircraft, we will look at the helicopter. we will look at the environment in which they were operating in. >> this video shows the helicopter crashing into the passenger jet around 845 last night. another angle in this earth cam video. everyone on

board american airlines flight 5342 and the army black hawk helicopter are presumed dead. the american jet from wichita, kansas, cleared for landing after a last minute, but routine runway change. the army helicopter on its usual path for standard night training, but flying at 350ft instead of 200. audio from air traffic control reveals. the military pilot acknowledged he saw the jet approaching the runway. >> 13. flight. the club has an aircraft separation. >> among the questions why didn't the helicopter change course? >> helicopter said we see it and we accept visual separation, meaning that the blackhawk crew says we will stay away from that helicopter. >> president trump today seeming to agree. >> the helicopter obviously was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> he then speculated, without providing evidence, that the crash was a result of his predecessor's diversity, equity and inclusion, or dei initiatives involving air traffic controllers. >> are you saying this crash was

somehow caused and the result of diversity hiring? and what evidence have you seen to support these claims? >> it just could have been we have a high standard. these are various very powerful tests that we put to use. and they were terminated by biden. and biden went by a standard that's the exact opposite. so we don't know. >> the faa had similar diversity policies under both presidents biden and trump's first term. the ntsb says it plans to release its preliminary report within 30 days. a final report will be released when they have completed the investigation. christiane cordero, abc news, arlington, virginia. >> back here in the bay area, a small peninsula regional airport may be at risk of losing its air traffic controllers. >> yeah, it's a general aviation airport. san carlos airport was said to have no one to man the airport's tower starting this weekend because of a pay dispute. but as abc seven news reporter tim johns found out, a last minute deal that preserves airport safety is in the works.

>> just miles away from sfo. the air traffic control tower at the smaller san carlos airport is set to go dark this saturday. the airport making the announcement in a press release earlier this week. the small airport's air traffic control team all resigning after a contract dispute over pay with the private company that employs them. >> it was significantly less than what the previous circle company was offering them, so the controllers declined the package. >> the prospect of having no air traffic controllers has alarmed many people, especially given the fatal collision that happened in washington, dc. that includes san mateo county supervisor ray mueller, whose district includes the airport. >> you just cannot have an airport. san carlos airport, functioning in close proximity to an airport that sees the type of traffic that san francisco airport has. >> aviation consultant and former sfo supervisor mike mccarran says small airports can still operate without air traffic control staff. however,

he says having that extra layer of safety is better for everyone. >> it's still safe to fly in an uncontrolled airfield. it's done every day around the across the nation. there's hundreds of uncontrolled airfields, but when you're operating in a congested airspace such as the bay area, it just helps more to have people in the tower. >> mccarran says most airports air traffic control staff are employed directly by the faa, which offers a cost of living adjustment for employees who work in expensive metropolitan areas. he tells me he hopes the company that runs the san carlos airport tower will do the same as of thursday. airport staff say they believe a deal will soon be reached, but they have a contingency plan in place to make sure the tower remains staffed. >> we're confident that come saturday, either the present controllers will still be working, or some new controllers will be standing by to take over and run the control tower. >> in san carlos, tim johns abc seven news. >> coming up, uber rewards some bad drivers and everything old is new again, especially when it

and then at nine, catch the premiere of scamanda, followed by perfect wife the mysterious disappearance of sherri papini, and then stay with us for abc seven news at 11. now, scamanda is about a south bay woman who uses an elaborate fake cancer and a battle with cancer to get donations, as well as sympathy. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes spoke with two of the investigators whose work led to that woman's conviction.

>> this is amanda c riley, a mom, wife and friend beloved by so many in her san jose church community and beyond. that community rallied around her when amanda told them of a stage three cancer battle starting in 2012. she documented the journey she said she was going through in a blog. for years. she shared detailed stories, posted pictures of herself in treatment attached to tubes and devices. all of it was fake. all the while, amanda spoke regularly at her san jose megachurch, getting countless cash, electronic and in-kind donations from people and organizations. but as convincing as the scheme was to many, she did have skeptics. one of them reaching out to an investigative producer, nancy muscatello, who investigated for five years. she got jose martinez involved. a san jose police detective who has since retired, martinez now had the task of finding proof he could possibly bring to a court that amanda was, in fact, lying and scamming people out of money. >> if i pursue this young lady

and she really does have cancer, it's not going to go well. >> but because amanda had posted so much on the blog, martinez was able to check facts. >> there were things that weren't lining up, like doctors, associated, particular hospitals. but not all of those doctors were were named as employees of those hospitals. >> patient confidentiality laws led to difficulties, but a breakthrough finally came. one of the hospitals amanda claimed to have visited finally responded to martinez. >> they said, no, she's never been here. she doesn't have any future appointments. she never was here. >> from there, more breakthroughs came. but amanda had been traveling coast to coast for what she claimed were cancer treatments, meaning the case was bigger than martinez's reach. enter irs special agent arlette lyons, based in oakland. lyons had also been in touch with the investigative producer who tipped off martinez. and with lyons now on the case, amanda was now under federal investigation for wire fraud. >> we knew she was using a website, and we knew people were

paying her electronically, and we knew that she was telling people that she had cancer and she did not. >> the investigative work of both martinez and lyons eventually led to amanda c riley pleading guilty in federal court, admitting to scheming more than $100,000 in donations. the judge sentenced her to five years and restitution. the work, muscatello, martinez and lyons did now setting a precedent for any future cases, something meaningful for them all. >> so my twin sister had cancer the whole time during this. the day of the search warrant, my mom was having surgery for breast cancer. >> lyons sister, kristen kane, passed away in november of 2023. >> this is what i was able to do my little fight for, you know, in her name. >> for his part, martinez hopes that this empowers organizations meant to help those with cancer to ask tough questions. >> as an example of why they need to ask you for your doctor's information. it's not
