american airlines jet and the u.s. army black hawk and what the ntsb just revealed. >> also, president trump launching tariffs tomorrow. canada, mexico, china, and whether asked about disruption in prices, the president said americans will understand. >> we remember tonight a two-time american gold medalist, skater and broadcaster. he brought joy to the sport. >> first tonight, new images of the final seconds leading to the collision between american airlines flight 5342 and the army block hawk. the helicopter flying straight into the plane. at this hour, salvage crews set to lift the black hawk out of the potomac. the ntsb releasing new images of the black boxes from the passenger jet now recovered. they believe they now have to remove the wreckage to reach many of the remaining victims. as we learn more tonight about the lives lost, including the young skaters and their families. two young sisters who died. one victim dying on her 33rd birthday, and the three soldiers on the black hawk. tonight, the faa issuing a major

>> announcer: from abc news world headquarters in new york, this is "world news tonight." with david muir. >> david: good evening. we're back from washington tonight from the banks of the potomac river, the site of that horrific crash, the deadliest plane crash in more than two decades in the u.s. we good gin tonight with the breaking news just in. we want to go to the images just moments ago, the ntsb has revealed navy salvage crews will be working to lift the black hawk helicopter and pieces of the passenger jet out of the water. salvage crews on the water right now, additional crews arriving in the next 24 hours. authorities moments ago saying there are two distinct debris fields, the black hawk in one area, the passenger plane in another area. the jet remains largely intact, the ntsb investigator said that should help in the investigation. also tonight, chilling images obtained show the final seconds before the collision. the black hawk appearing to flight directly into flight

5342. both aircraft then falling into the potomac. the black hawk might have flown outside its approved flight plan and flying higher than its al allowed altitude. both of the passenger jets' black boxes have been recovered. one, the cockpit voice recorder has some water intrusion. he said that's normal and both recorders should be salvageable. we also just learned the helicopter's two recording devices, they're both contained in one box, and that box has also been recovered tonight. abc's gio benitez covers aviation and he's on the scene tonight leading us off. >> reporter: tonight, salvage teams on scene set to begin pulling the wreckage of the deadliest plane crash in nearly 24 years from the icy potomac river, starting with the black hawk helicopter. crews dealing with bad weather all day, scanning the waters with sonar, the remains of 41 of the 67 victims now recovered. sources telling abc news many of the remaining victims are

believed to be trapped in the jet's fuselage. >> we have right now two distinct debris fields. the good news is based on the initial mapping, while there are some small aspects of that debris field, there are large chunks that will be easily recoverable. >> reporter: and chilling new images tonight showing the clearest view yet of the final seconds before the midair disaster. the video obtained exclusively by cnn shows the army helicopter on the left side of the screen on a collision course with that american airlines jet shortly before 9:00 wednesday night. you see that plane, its headlights shining bright, making its turn, banking on its final approach to the runway. then just moments later, the black hawk colliding with that plane, exploding in a fireball. debris plunging into the potomac. it appeared in that moment neither aircraft took evasive action, raising questions if the pilots even saw it coming and whether the black hawk saw the plane. in another major move, the faa now suspending helicopter routes

over the potomac area in the area over and around the airport for at least 30 days. an faa document and flight radar show that the army helicopter may have deviated outside of its approved route at least once in the seconds before the crash. and early data shows it was flying above 300 feet when it should have been under 200. the ntsb tonight revealing they have recovered the helicopter's data and voice recorder as well as both of the plane's black boxes including the flight data recorder. they said river water got inside. >> we have a high level of confidence that we will be able to get a full download in the very near future. >> reporter: investigators re-creating the final minutes leading up to that midair crash, before that american airlines flight started its descent. at 8:43 p.m., the jet's pilots told to land on a shorter runway. that black hawk helicopter now also making its way up the potomac river. at 8:45 p.m., air traffic control alerting the helicopter

to that jet's approach. at 8:47 p.m., asking the black hawk pilot to again confirm they see the jet. you can hear the alarm go off as they ask the black hawk, do you see that jet? seconds later, the collision. that final communication, a crucial piece of the investigation. a source with direct knowledge confirming reports that the air traffic controller on duty was doing the job normally handled by two people. monitoring both plane and helicopter traffic. a routine procedure when nighttime traffic is at a certain lev. we have just learned that controller has been interviewed. and david, the fact that they found the helicopter's black box intact is a very big deal because now investigators will actually be able to hear that final conversation inside the cockpit. did they even see the correct

plane? david. >> geobenitez, thank you. >> we're learning more about the 67 victims onboard the flight and the crew on the black hawk. the young figure skaters, their families, the two young sisters who died, the three soldiers. the experienced pilots on the black hawk. whit johnson with the remarkable stories, the young ones, the skating stars on that plane. >> reporter: tonight, loved ones honoring the memories of the 67 people killed in that midair collision over the potomac. >> it's really fun to have a sister to skate with. >> reporter: 14-year-old everly livingston and her 11-year-old sister were bright rising stars in the world of figure skating. our washington, d.c. affiliate wjla spoke with the sisters in 2022. >> you get older, what do you want to do with skating? >> go to disney on ice. >> how about you? >> i want to be in the olympics. >> reporter: both lost their lives on their way home from a national skating camp in wichita, along with their parents, donna and peter.

12-year-old brianna beat cancer when she was 4 months old. she died with her mom. breel's mother telling me she was so proud to skate at that coveted camp just days before. what do you want the world to know about her and her competitive spirit? >> she was just such a fighter in everything she did, and she just lived life to the fullest with everything. >> reporter: kia duggens was a harvard law school graduate. she was flying to d.c. to start as a law professor at howard university in the fall. elizabeth keys died on her 33rd birthday. heading home early from a business trip to celebrate with her longtime partner, david sideman. >> both her professional life and also her personal life was always wanting to do the right thing, was always wanting to be the best version of yourself. >> reporter: the victims of flight 5342 touched many lives in different ways. >> are you posing? >> reporter: lizzy jacobson will

never forget this moment from 2021. flight attendant ian epstein helping to calm her baby, when she saw his photo in the news, she recognized him immediately. >> we picked her up, and just kind of walked the aisles, talked to everybody. was cracking jokes. i thought it was such an amazing experience with the flight attendant who clearly loved his job and he loved making people smile. >> reporter: and david, the army has now identified two of the three soldiers who were on that black hawk helicopter. 28-year-old staff sergeant ryan o'hara from georgia, spent more than ten years in the armed forces and served in afghanistan, and 39-year-old chief warrant officer and pilot andrew eves from maryland had nearly two decades of decorated military service in both the army and navy. the name of the female pilot has not been released at the request of the family. and david, we're also learning that american airlines will no longer be using that flight number 5342. david. >> david: whit johnson on the

panks of the potomac river for us again tonight. thank you. there's a lot of other news this friday night. president trump late today discussing the tariffs he will now impose, set to impose 25% tariffs tomorrow on canada and mexico, a 10% tariff on china. what will it mean for grocery prices, electronics, oil. president trump saying there could be disruption and americans will understand. rachel scott at the white house. >> reporter: tonight, president trump set to implement sweeping tariffs on the country's largest trading partners. a move that would impact prices at the grocery store and the gas pump. >> there could be some temporary short term disruption, and people will understand that. >> reporter: it comes even as the president has acknowledged one of the reasons he won was his promise of lowering grocery prices. but now, he's warning there could be disruption due to the tariffs. the president announcing 25% tariffs on mexico and canada, and 10% tariffs on china. warning the three countries there's nothing they can do to stop him.

>> the tariffs are going to make us very rich and very strong. >> reporter: the president saying the majority will go into effect tomorrow. with additional tariffs on oil and gas coming in the next three weeks. experts say the average american family could pay $830 more this year because of these tariffs. with families paying more at the grocery store for fresh produce from mexico like avocados, tomatoes, and limes, and alcohol, beer, tequila, and other liquor likely to go up in price too. the tariffs could also drive up prices on cars and car parts and those expected tariffs on oil and gas could increase the price at the pump. some 40 to 70 cents more per gallon. tonight, the threat of a multifront trade war. mexico's president claudia sheinbaum says they're prepared for what may come, and canada's prime minister justin trudeau floating retaliation. >> we won't relent until tariffs are removed, and of course everything is on the table. >> reporter: the president is keenly aware that inflation and the economy were top issues for

voters this election. today, he was asked directly what he would say to those voters who wanted him to bring down everyday costs. the president calling this a short term disruption, saying americans will understand, david. >> david: rachel, thank you. the other developing headline involves the fbi tonight. sources telling abc news the trump administration has now warned several top fbi officials to retire by the end of the day today or be fired. here's pierre thomas. >> reporter: tonight, sources telling abc news at least six top officials at fbi headquarters were told retire today or be fired on monday. and that the trump administration is currently compiling a list of other agents who could be removed as well. sources say among those targeted are agents tied to former special counsel jack smith's january 6th and classified documents investigations into president trump. we're also learning some agents leading major field offices across the country could be pushed out too. because the administration believes they cannot be trusted to implement the president's

policies. tonight, the fbi agents association calling the news outrageous. saying dismissing potentially hundreds of agents would severely weaken the bureau's ability to protect the country from national security and criminal threats. and will ultimately risk setting up the bureau and its new leadership for failure. tonight, president trump insisting he was not personally involved in the firings. >> if they fired some people over there, that's a good thing because they were very bad. they were very corrupt people. >> reporter: the president says some fbi leaders were complicit in what he believes were politically motivated investigations, but tonight, some agents are saying such potential wholesale and concentrated changes are unfair and alarming in such a dangerous threat environment, david. >> david: pierre thomas, thank you. now to the powerful storm sweeping right across the northeast at this hour. heavy rain, ice, snow in some places. this system from washington right up through philadelphia, new york to boston. chief meteorologist lee goldberg from wabc back with us tonight.

lee. >> reporter: david, a rainy night here in new york. same system bringing additional rain to d.c. tonight. we also have flood warnings over west virginia. those will expire after two inches of rain. more heavy rain from georgia to virginia. also a wintry side tonight. over upstate new york and new england, it could get to boston. by tomorrow morning, that storm is offshore, maybe snow left over for down east maine. out west, an atmospheric river event. it's flooding rain and mountain snows from northern california into the pacific northwest. there are flood watches out from san francisco to redding, maybe a half foot of rain, 1 to 3 feet of snow in the sierras. some of that moisture could get to southern california by tuesday or wednesday. >> david: lee goldberg, thank you for this week. >> tonight, the deeply personal reveal here from retired nba star dwyane wade, who is just 43 years old, revealing his battle with cancer and his message tonight. here's matt gutman. >> reporter: tonight, retired nba star dwyane wade revealing that surprise cancer diagnosis. >> what i had on my kidney was a

cyst, a tumor. >> reporter: the hall of famer sharing on his podcast that doctors removed nearly half of his right kidney in 2023, after discovering a tumor. >> i had a personal decision to make, and what it was, was if this is cancerous, and this tumor, this cyst is cancerous on your kidney, you're 41 years old. you probably need surgery because it's something that needs to be removed so it doesn't spread. >> reporter: tests showing stage one kidney cancer. black men are among the most diagnosed in the u.s. the father of five who is married to gabrielle union, said he went to the doctor after having stomach issues, cramps, and trouble going to the bathroom. he was inspired to get checked by his father who battled prostate cancer. >> thank god i did do the surgery because the tumor was cancerous. >> reporter: wade made no mention of his future cancer prognosis. he did say he spoke out because he wanted to encourage men to prioritize their health, to go

we have more now on the breaking news of a small plane in northeast philadelphia. it happened near kottmann avenue and roosevelt boulevard. the plane may have hit several buildings in the area. debris in the street. first responders on the scene there in philadelphia. >> tonight, officials at the usda have ordered the removal of climate change information. abc news obtaining a memo outlining the order. the usda did not respond to our request. the website had included extensive resources on climate science and strategies for farmers. when we come back here tonight, we remember a famous singer and actress, mick jagger and keith richards both honoring her tonight. grab bounty. a half inch or less of rain, likely lasting a few hours. let's give you a look at what it looked like in orinda this afternoon. it was enough rain to make driving pretty difficult for some folks. some light rain in oakland with a few still walking their dogs or braving that afternoon jog around lake merritt. >> fido's got to go out at some point, so we have team coverage of the storm, starting with lisa. arjun. lisa, you're tracking the storm and what are we in for? >> well, it looks like tomorrow is going to be a very rainy day when we increase our storm impact scale to a level two with the wind. and this is all coming from hawaii. the southwestern trajectory of this is allowing for the moisture to continue being pumped up into the bay area. they've had over three inches of rain per hour in parts of maui. so big problems there. but back home, as we take you into the bay area, you can see the heavier rain in the north bay. it has been light and scattered throughout much of the day. it is beginning to fill in light rain over into the east bay and you'll notice out towards the delta. now this is a warm system so snow
