small plane crash in philadelphia. the plane coming down into a busy neighborhood, buildings and cars on fire, debris in the streets. reports of multiple casualties at this hour, and what we're learning right now. and it all comes amid breaking news in washington. tonight we have new images of the final seconds leading to the collision between american airlines flight 5342 and the army blackhawk. at this hour, salvage crews set to lift the blackhawk out of the potomac. the ntsb releasing new images from the black boxes from the passenger jet now recovered. they believe they have to remove the wreckage to reach many of the victims. two young sisters who died, one victim dying on her 33rd birthday, and three soldiers on the blackhawk. tonight the faa also issuing a major change in flight rules for those helicopters around reagan

news. in a week of horrific aviation news already, we have learned of a small plane crash into a busy neighborhood in philadelphia. the small plane coming down late today, multiple cars and buildings on fire. there are reports of multiple casualties, debris in the street. abc's phil lip of tonight with the images coming in now. >> reporter: tonight chilling images capturing the moment a jet plunged into the heart of northeast philadelphia at the height of rush hour. a huge fireball erupting against the night sky. leaving residents terrified. the crash lighting multiple buildings and cars on fire. wreckage and debris scattered across the busy intersection of homes and shopping centers. there are reports of multiple casualties. >> that's what actually made me look around whchlt i looked in back, it was just flame and just everything was just engulfed in flames and just everywhere and people panicking and running and

screaming. i got out and i ran towards everything, trying to make sure everybody was okay. >> reporter: the faa says the jet with six people on board going down moments after takeoff from northeast philadelphia airport around 6:30 tonight. >> the plane just crashed. >> reporter: the flight was headed to springfield, missouri. >> it has to do with something probably we should never see, that is either fuel failure, engine failure, or some form of catastrophe. >> governor josh shapiro is sending all possible resources to the scene. >> david: phil thank you. meantime we are back from washington tonight for the banks of the potomac river, the set of that horrific crash, the deadliest plane crash in more than two decades in the the ntsb has just revealed tonight that navy salvage crews

will be working to lift the blackhawk helicopter and pieces of the jet out of the water. salvage crews on the water right now. additional teams arriving over the next 24 hours. authorities saying there are two distinct debris fields, the blackhawk in one area, the passenger plane in another area. even though the jet is in multiple pieces, it remains largely intact. the ntsb investigator said that should help in the investigation. chilling images obtained by cnn show the final seconds before the collision, the blackhawk appearing to fly directly into american airlines flight. the blackhawk might have flown outside its flight plan for a time and flying higher than its allowed altitude of 200 feet. both of the passenger jet's black boxes have been recovered. both recorders should be salvageable. we also just learned the

helicopters two recording devices, they're both contained in one box, and that box has also been recovered tonight. gio benitez covers aviation and he's on the scene tonight leading us off. >> reporter: tonight, salvage teams on scene set to begin pulling the wreckage of the deadliest plane crash in nearly 24 years from the icy potomac river, starting with the black hawk helicopter. crews dealing with bad weather all day, scanning the waters with sonar, the remains of 41 of the 67 victims now recovered. sources telling abc news many of the remaining victims are believed to be trapped in the jet's fuselage. >> we have right now two distinct debris fields. the good news is based on the initial mapping, while there are some small aspects of that debris field, there are large chunks that will be easily recoverable. >> reporter: and chilling new images tonight showing the clearest view yet of the final seconds before the midair disaster. the video obtained exclusively

by cnn shows that army helicopter on the left side of the screen on a collision course with that american airlines jet shortly before 9:00 wednesday night. you see that plane, its headlights shining bright, making its turn, banking on its final approach to the runway. then just moments later, the black hawk colliding with that plane, exploding in a fireball. debris plunging into the potomac. it appeared in that moment neither aircraft took evasive action, raising questions if the american airlines pilots even saw it coming and whether the blackhawk saw the plane. in another major move, the faa now suspending helicopter routes over the potomac area in the area over and around the airport for at least 30 days. an faa document and flight radar show that the army helicopter may have deviated outside of its approved route at least once in the seconds before the crash. and early data shows it was flying above 300 feet when it should have been under 200. the ntsb tonight revealing they have recovered the helicopter's data and voice recorder as well as both of the plane's black

boxes including the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder. they said river water got inside. >> we have a high level of confidence that we will be able to get a full download in the very near future. >> reporter: investigators re-creating the final minutes leading up to that midair crash, before that american airlines flight started its descent. at 8:43 p.m., the jet's pilots told to land on a shorter runway. that blackhawk helicopter now also making its way up the potomac river. at 8:45 p.m., air traffic control alerting the helicopter to that jet's approach. at 8:47 p.m., asking the black hawk pilot to again confirm they see the jet. you can hear the alarm go off as they ask the blackhawk, do you see that jet? >> reporter: seconds later, the collision. that final communication, a

crucial piece of the investigation. a source with direct knowledge confirming reports that the air traffic controller on duty was doing the job normally handled by two people, monitoring both plane and helicopter traffic. a routine procedure when nighttime traffic is at a certain level. we have just learned that controller has been interviewed. and david, the fact that they found the helicopter's black box intact is a very big deal because now investigators will actually be able to hear that final conversation inside the cockpit. did they even see the correct plane? david. >> david: geo benitez, thank you. >> we're learning more about the 67 victims on board the american airlines flight and the crew on board that blackhawk. the young figure skaters, their families, the two young sisters who died, the three soldiers. the experienced pilots on the blackhawk. whit johnson with the remarkable stories, the young ones, the skating stars on that plane. >> reporter: tonight, loved ones honoring the memories of the 67 people killed in that midair collision over the potomac. >> it's really fun to have a

sister to skate with. >> reporter: 14-year-old everly livingston and her 11-year-old sister alydia were bright rising stars in the world of figure skating. our washington, d.c. affiliate wjla spoke with the sisters in 2022. >> when you get older, what do you want to do with skating? >> go to disney on ice. >> how about you? >> i want to be in the olympics. >> reporter: both lost their lives on their way home from a national skating camp in wichita, along with their parents, donna and peter. 12-year-old brielle beyer beat cancer when she was 4 months old. she died with her mom. brielle's dad telling me she was so proud to skate at that coveted camp just days before. what do you want the world to know about her and her competitive spirit? >> she was just such a fighter in everything she did, and she just lived life to the fullest with everything. >> reporter: kiah duggins was a harvard law school graduate and a former miss kansas contestant. she was flying to d.c. to start as a law professor at howard

university in the fall. elizabeth keys died on her 33rd birthday, heading home early from a business trip to celebrate with her longtime partner, david sideman. >> she was fearless in both her professional life and also her personal life, was always wanting to do the right thing, always wanting to take risks, always wanting to be the best version of yourself. >> reporter: the victims of flight 5342 touched many lives in different ways. >> are you posing? >> reporter: lizzie jacobson will never forget this moment from 2021. flight attendant ian epstein helping to calm her baby. when she saw his photo in the news, she recognized him immediately. >> we picked her up, and just kind of walked the aisles, talked to everybody, was cracking jokes. i thought it was such an amazing experience with the flight attendant who clearly loved his job and he loved making people smile. >> reporter: and david, the army has now identified two of the three soldiers who were on that

blackhawk helicopter. 28-year-old staff sergeant ryan o'hara from georgia, spent more than ten years in the armed forces and served in afghanistan, and 39-year-old chief warrant officer and pilot andrew eaves from maryland had nearly two decades of decorated military service in both the army and navy. the name of the female pilot has not been released at the request of the family. and david, we're also learning that american airlines will no longer be using that flight number 5342. david? >> david: whit johnson on the banks of the potomac river again for us tonight. we will be watching you this weekend. thank you. there's a lot of other news this friday night. president trump late today discussing the tariffs he will now impose, set to impose 25% tariffs tomorrow on canada and mexico, a 10% tariff on china. the question, what will this mean for grocery prices, electronics, gas, and oil? president trump saying there could be disruption and americans will understand. rachel scott at the white house. >> reporter: tonight, president trump set to implement sweeping tariffs on the country's largest

trading partners, a move that would impact prices at the grocery store and the gas pump. >> there could be some temporary short-term disruption, and people will understand that. >> reporter: it comes even as the president has acknowledged one of the reasons he won was his promise of lowering grocery prices. but now, he's warning there could be disruption due to the tariffs. the president announcing 25% tariffs on mexico and canada and 10% tariffs on china, warning the three countries there's nothing they can do to stop him. >> the tariffs are going to make us very rich and very strong. >> reporter: the president saying the majority will go into effect tomorrow, with additional tariffs on oil and gas coming in the next three weeks. experts say the average american family could pay $830 more this year because of these tariffs. with families paying more at the grocery store for fresh produce from mexico like avocados, tomatoes, and limes, and alcohol, beer, tequila, and other liquor likely to go up in price too. the tariffs could also drive up

prices on cars and car parts and those expected tariffs on oil and gas could increase the price at the pump some 40 to 70 cents more per gallon. tonight, the threat of a multifront trade war. mexico's president claudia sheinbaum says they are prepared for what may come, and canada's prime minister justin trudeau floating retaliation. >> we won't relent until tariffs are removed, and of course everything is on the table. >> reporter: the president is keenly aware that inflation and the economy were top issues for voters this election. today, he was asked directly what he would say to those voters who wanted him to bring down everyday costs. the president calling this a short-term disruption, saying americans will understand, david. >> david: rachel, thank you. now to the powerful storm sweeping across the northeast at this hour. chief meteorologist lee goldberg from wabc back with us tonight.

>> david, a rainy night in new york, same system that's bringing rain to d.c. tonight. we had flood warnings over west virginia. there's more heavy rain from georgia to virginia. there's also a wintry side to this tonight in northern new england. that mix line could get to boston before it ends after midnight. by tomorrow morning, that storm is offshore. gusty winds will follow. out west it's an atmospheric river event, flooding northern california into the pacific northwest. maybe a half foot of rain. 1 to 3 feet of snow in the sierras and western rockies. >> lee goldberg back with us tonight. tonight the deeply personal reveal tonight from retired nba star dwyane wade, who is just 43 years old revealing his battle with cancer tonight. >> reporter: tonight, retired nba star dwyane wade revealing that surprise cancer diagnosis. >> what i had on my kidney was a

cyst, a tumor. >> reporter: the hall of famer sharing on his podcast that doctors removed nearly half of his right kidney in 2023, after discovering a tumor. >> i had a personal decision to make, and what it was, was if this is cancerous, and this tumor, this cyst is cancerous on your kidney, you're 41 years old. you probably need surgery because it's something that needs to be removed so it doesn't spread. >> reporter: tests showing stage one kidney cancer. black men are among the most diagnosed in the u.s. the father of five who is married to actress gabrielle union, said he went to the doctor after having stomach issues, cramps, and trouble going to the bathroom. now, 43 years old, he says he was inspired to get checked by his father, who battled prostate cancer. >> thank god i did do the surgery because the tumor was cancerous. >> reporter: wade made no mention of his future cancer prognosis. he did say he spoke out because he wanted to encourage men to prioritize their health, to go to the doctor to get checked.

>> incredible pictures celebrating dick button tonight. i know it's been a heavy week here and i thank you for being here. i'll see you on monday night. good night. from abc seven live. breaking news. >> that breaking news is a deadly plane crash in philadelphia. it happened just 150 miles from. and two daysst after that deadly midair collision near washington, dc. tonight's crash took place about three hours ago.

>> and just look at the chaos on the ground there. debris fire all about. the plane was reportedly on a medical mission with six people on board. the faa says the learjet went down soon after taking off from northeast philadelphia airport, crashing about four miles away. it is a small airport in a very dense area, and that's where the concern is. lots of homes, lots of stores in this area and roads nearby. and the planes take. we're learning was full of fuel. our sister station in philadelphia is reporting that people in that area were taken to the hospital. many of them, as you can understand, with burn injuries. the plane was en route to springfield-branson national airport in missouri. that's about a four hour flight. roughly 1000 miles away. >> and a doorbell camera captured the plane as it went down. look at the top of the screen. you can see that light, and that light plummets to the ground. then that explosion there. we're going to show it to you again in slow motion. it will be zoomed in. the p
