>> and just look at the chaos on the ground there. debris fire all about. the plane was reportedly on a medical mission with six people on board. the faa says the learjet went down soon after taking off from northeast philadelphia airport, crashing about four miles away. it is a small airport in a very dense area, and that's where the concern is. lots of homes, lots of stores in this area and roads nearby. and the planes take. we're learning was full of fuel. our sister station in philadelphia is reporting that people in that area were taken to the hospital. many of them, as you can understand, with burn injuries. the plane was en route to springfield-branson national airport in missouri. that's about a four hour flight. roughly 1000 miles away. >> and a doorbell camera captured the plane as it went down. look at the top of the screen. you can see that light, and that light plummets to the ground. then that explosion there. we're going to show it to you again in slow motion. it will be zoomed in. the plane

just seems to nosedive right there before that explosion. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm julian glover. of course, we'll keep you updated on that plane crash. and the latest on the midair collision near washington, dc. soon. >> first, though, we want to check on the story that affects everyone in the bay area today. the weather. tonight's top story is what you see on your screen. live doppler seven tracking rain in the bay area and get used to this view. because this is just the beginning of a series of stormy days. >> and we're going to take a live look outside right nown rafael right there, if you can see it from the raindrops on the camera there. we do see traffic moving in both directions nicely. good news there. and now we want to take you over to the sierra. a live look, and there we go. south lake tahoe's zephyr cove camera. we can see some fat flakes falling there. >> people needed umbrellas in san francisco during this downpour along the embarcadero. some tourists opted for plastic ponchos instead. hey. whatever works. rain did not detertever runners around oakland's lake merritt, and dog walkers were

still out and about. the south bay also getting some wet weather in this storm. this is a look at the dripping gutters. you see them there in san jose. the north bay is worried about the possibility of flooding, though. >> abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has that story. but first up, we want to check in with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel, who is tracking this series of storms. sandhya. >> yeah. and juliana, we have been waiting for this for weeks. winter is finally here. let's take a look at live doppler seven. it pretty much says winter. we are painting a very wet picture for you here. watch out if you're out on the roadways right now. napa. sonoma. you're seeing some light to moderate rain. it has been steady right around san leandro, 580 golflinks boulevard, heading down from san francisco to the peninsula. as i take you down into street level radar here around san mateo. foster city, highway 101. watch out. south bay has had a few showers as well. tonight it is a level one. tomorrow the storm goes to a level two. here's why.

here's the atmospheric river that we are tracking. the moisture plume stretching all the way to the hawaiian islands. and it is headed right towards us. so looking at that atmospheric river tomorrow morning, you're seeing the pounding rain. it continues into the afternoon, timing it all out for you. 7:00 tonight. it's still just light to moderate rain, scattered showers as we head into the late night hours. and then here comes the steadier, heavier rain to start off your saturday morning. in the afternoon at noontime, you're seeing those downpours continuing. the national weather service has the entire area under a flood watch until 10 p.m. sunday. flooding is possible when you're getting several inches of rain and up to five inches in the hills. you can certainly bet there could be problems. right now. in the oakland hills, winds are gusting to 36 miles an hour. 32 big rock ridge. it is a level one for tonight. rain continues. slippery roads gusty in the hills. it becomes a level two, which is a moderate strength storm. with that atmospheric river arriving, heavy rain and gusty winds continue. and then we are looking at minor urban

flooding. i'll be back with a full look at that timeline to let you know exactly what you can expect over the weekend. coming up. julian. >> okay, we'll see you in just a second. thank you so much, sandhya. well, as you know, the rain breaks a long, dry spell around here. but the storm is also bringing some flooding concerns in the north bay. as sandhya just mentioned. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in petaluma. with the story and cornell, we see the rain coming down hard behind you there. >> yeah. hey, julian, it has been a minute for sure, but rain is definitely back with us tonight. a lot of folks around here happy to see it. but with storms intensifying tomorrow, the possibility of flooding is looking very probable. >> we are at mark west, station road and star road, and i'm just kind of surveying the area to see how the creeks are looking. >> sonoma county fire district inspector ryan osborne is doing a pre storm check of local roads and creeks after a long dry spell. he says it won't take much to flood.

>> we're probably six feet down from the deck of the roadway here, but that can rise very quickly. >> what will this road look like tomorrow? >> likely we're going to have water coming over the top.ave >> osborne expects some low lying roads will flood. detours will be in place. >> closed and road flooded. signs that the county roads puts out kind of prepositions. these right before a storm. if you see any red tape, yellow tape on these across the road, please do not go around them. >> last november, a driver lost his life after driving through flooded maze canyon road in guerneville, the second such drowning fatality in two years. >> we are always encouraging folks to, if they see the road closed, road flooded signs and the red or yellow tape across the roads to, you know, turn around and not drown. >> this sonoma county road worker was filling potholes ahead of the storm. we found this crew busy trimming tree limbs around power lines for

p-g-and-e's. the utility says it's bringing in extra crews to the north bay and pre-staging equipment like wires and transformers in case they're needed. >> in addition, we encourage our customers to make preparations as well, whether that's making sure that you have batteries on hand, should you should you experience a power outage? >> yeah. we've been waiting a long time. really glad to have the rain back. >> julian loveland says he's ready for it. >> got new tires yesterday. that helps. >> umbrellas are back on duty. ready or not. >> i don't really love the rain when i'm going out. i'd rather be inside, but it's good for us. i know that we need the rain. >> yeah. back. live where the rain continues to fall. here in petaluma. the chp and firefighters reminding folks who may have forgotten how to drive in the rain because it's been so long. take it slow, be safe. it's going to be a very wet week and we're live in petaluma tonight. cornell. bernard abc seven news. >> very wet. petaluma. cornell. thank you so much.

and of course, you can follow along with the forecast as the changes come along with the abc seven bay area app. it will give you access to the same live doppler seven our weather team uses will also send out important alerts when we get them. well, the man whose drone crashed into a firefighting airplane during the southern california wildfires has agreed to plead guilty to federal charges filed against him. as a part of the plea agreement. he'll pay restitution for the damage he caused, and it's more than $65,000. the drone punched a hole in the wing of the super scooper plane that was on loan from canada, grounding it for days while it had to get repaired. 56 year old peter aikman says he launched his drone from santa monica two days after the palisades fire started, because he wanted to see the damage. of course, drones were banned at the time. he lost sight of the drone and it hit the plane. in addition to paying restitution to canada, aikman will also complete 150 hours of community service. helping those wildfire relief

efforts. >> tonight, barges are headed to washington, dc to recover the american airlines plane that fell into the potomac river after crashing with a military helicopter near reagan reagan national airport. now, the national transportation safety board says the barge will begin lifting the main section of the plane out of the river this weekend. it's one of two debris fields. 64 people died aboard the american airlines plane. three service members in the blackhawk helicopter also died. that chopper was lifted out of the river today. the black boxes have also been recovered. new video of the crash shows the impact air traffic control recordings indicate the army helicopter was alerted about the plane's location two minutes before the midair collision. it was reportedly flying at the wrong altitude. >> we will not speculate about atc tapes that you may have heard and seen online or snippets. we are getting the full cooperation that we need to make sure what we are saying is factual.

>> cnn. cnn is reporting that the day before the crash, another passenger plane had to abort its first landing to avoid a helicopter in its flight path. the faa has now restricted helicopter flights around reagan national airport. and as we learn more about the crash and the people involved, we will post updates to our website. abc seven news dot. seven bay area app. >> tonight, president donald trump is making his first trip to mar-a-lago since returning to the white house. he finished his second week with a flurry of activity as threatened. trump is imposing 25% tariffs on goods coming from canada and mexico starting tomorrow, plus an additional 10% tariff on products from china. abc news has learned the trump administration is compiling a list of fbi agents and other officials who it wants to fire for participating in the investigations into trump's classified documents case and the january 6th investigation. the centers for disease control were told to take down websites

breaking news. that small plane crash in pennsylvania. this is new drone footage of the scene. you can see all the flashingne. lights from emergency responders. and we've just learned it was a jet rescue air ambulance with four crew members and two passengers, a pediatric patient and their escort on board. the company says it cannot confirm any survivors. the plane hit the ground in just

a fiery crash. this happened a few hours ago. it was scheduled to fly from northeast philadelphia airport to missouri. and we continue to follow this breaking news, and we'll bring you anything more that we learn in this newscast. >> now to the big story here. closer to home, despite the rain we're seeing now, there are major concerns about rain and snow across california. state water resource officials conducted their second measurement of 2025, returning to phillips station at echo summit, where the snow was falling hard for a time. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes shows us where the snowpack stands. >> extra attention is being put on this year's second snow survey. it comes after a month punctuated by dry weather and devastating wildfires across southern california. all of that leading to questions about what the drought outlook could be for the rest of the state. on average, the snowpack supplies about 30% of california's water needs, but the most recent survey measuring it was less than encouraging. >> we're behind the eight ball throughout the state. >> at phillips station, officials with the california

department of water resources measured 22.5in of snow depth and a water equivalent of eight inches. that's 46% of average for that spot. when factoring in the other stations statewide, the snok is 65% of average for january 31st. at the beginning of january, it was 108%. officials attributing that to a dry spell. >> as you can see, when we don't accumulate some snow or rain, it it definitely hurts our our snowpack and it requires us to catch up. >> the hope now is that a week of wet weather will bring at least the northern half of the state to average or above average. promising news here in the bay area for valley water, where much of the water from the snowpack ends up in the local reservoirs that supply water to the south bay. those local reservoirs are at 72% of average for this time of year. >> seeing these storms coming is good news for us. hopefully they'll fill up our local reservoirs as well, but we are below average for this time of year. >> locally, valley water says the community has done a good

job maintaining conservation habits developed during the height of the statewide drought. >> you don't have to wait to a drought to make changes. it's a good idea to make those changes now because we know a drought is coming and you might as well be saving water and saving money now. >> while officials say water management will be key to keeping reservoirs full, they're still holding on to high hopes for the current and future storms. >> so we'll definitely need more storms throughout the next several months to make up for the very dry january. >> the next snow survey is tentatively scheduled for february 28th in the south bay. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> well, we're currently working on chipping away at that deficit right now. >> yeah, we saw that camera up in tahoe zephyr cove. we saw all the snow coming down and we're seeing the rain here. sandhya. yeah. >> winter is back. it is so nice to see emma and julian. let's take a look at a live picture right now from zephyr cove. because this is what we've been waiting for weeks now. chain controls right now, by the way, on state route four, 50 and 88. so if you are going up, be careful. watch out for

slippery roads and definitely carry those chains. right now blue canyon is reporting 36 degrees and mixed precipitation. it is raining at lake level. looking at live doppler seven. this is the first storm that has moved in. it is bringing the snow to the sierra and steady rain into the bay area. atmospheric river is on its way. you can clearly see the moisture plume extending all the way down towards the hawaiian islands, and that moisture plume moves in our direction tomorrow morning, and we start to notice the downpours. so first, right now, steady rain, we're going to get you into street level radar where we are tracking some light to moderate rain right around highway four. antioch heading out towards oakley main street around the peninsula east palo alto. you will notice bayshore road, palo alto, redwood city, atherton seeing some light to moderate rain as well, and from san jose towards the santa cruz area. it is certainly lighter north bay. we'll show you where it is right now around sausalito, tiburon, paradise

drive, san francisco. you're getting a little bit of an ease up for now. 40s and 50s right now. temperatures today got up only into the 40s and 50s. here are the concerns for the weekend. minor flooding on the creeks and streams, and certainly on the roadways. high likelihood of this happening, especially when the heavier rain comes in trees going down. it's a potential, we'll call it moderate power outages and mudslides a low likelihood. it is certainly a slick golden gate bridge tonight. light to moderate rain a level two storm for saturday. you get that soaking and windy weather. and then sunday into next week this active pattern is going to continue. so it's a level one for tonight a light system rain continues slippery roadways. and it is going to continue to remain windy in the hills. we bump this storm to a level two on our exclusive storm impact scale here. atmospheric river arrives. heavier rain comes with it with the gusty winds and minor urban flooding, so be prepared for that as we go. hour by hour, 7:00 tonight you're seeing the rain. it becomes scattered at 11 p.m. and

then just as it becomes scattered, the moisture plume starts to move. in 1030, that atmospheric river is drenching us around noontime. you can see there at 2 p.m. heaviest rain is in the north bay, and then we'll go with scattered showers for your saturday night plans going into sunday. it's not going to be a washout on sunday, but you will have periods of showers going into the afternoon and evening hours. so here's a look at the rainfall projections going into 4 p.m. sunday. most areas are going to pick up between a half an inch to an inch and a half, but there will be some areas in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains that picks up less, and there will be some higher isolated totals. now the wind continues to be an issue with breezy conditions into the afternoon and then gusty as we head towards tomorrow night, over 30 miles an hour. the windy pattern stays with us sunday morning. sunday afternoon in the mountains. it's not only the gusty winds, but the snow coming in with the rait lake level. winter weather advisories shaded in purple until 4 a.m. sunday above 6500ft

at the highest peaks we're looking at up to two feet. definitely carry those chains if you are going. morning. temperatures in the 40s and the 50s and umbrella weather sticking around for the afternoon. you will notice it's going to be windy. 50s and 60s. it is going to be milder though. that's one thing you will notice as that moisture plume brings in the warmer air mass. the accuweather seven day forecast. heavy rain at times with gusty winds. it's a level two for your saturday, a one for sunday, showers and breezy, a one for monday. it's going to be wet and windy. and then on tuesday colder storm drops the temperatures brings in a level two is what we're going with. the chance of showers on wednesday and then a one on thursday as that rainy pattern continues. so julian and we're going to be into e pattern that we expect in february. >> exactly. yeah. just get used to it. yeah, yeah. >> it's all good. >> settle in. yeah. >> thank you. sandy. >> well, tonight we bring you a story of resilience from a san jose woman whose family has been through a lot. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the inspiring story of

perseverance through her ordeal. >> fear is at an all time high for many immigrant families. fear of the unknown. fear of losing family. fear of deportation. a feeling that hits home for san jose's hayley ayala mejia. >> i don't believe family should be separated, and as a mexican american, i feel strongly impacted because a lot of mexican immigrants sometimes don't have family in the united states. all they have is clothes and a dream. and my parents were those people. >> what started as a dream became a nightmare, starting when ayala mejia was just eight years old, her mother was deported to mexico, leaving her father as the lone parent to ayala mejia and her younger sister. >> this is my father. his name is miguel angel ayala mora. >> in 2022, when ayala mejia was just 16, he died from complications with the covid vaccine. how challenging has that been to lose both parents in that respect? >> hard. but i think i became harder. i knew that i was the

one responsible for my future. i could not change my past. >> after bouncing around the foster care system, the socal native made her way to san jose. here, ayala mejia was connected with services specifically for foster youth so she could finally stand on her own two feet. what does it mean to have a place of your own? >> to have a place of my own means? stability means comfort, means peace. i'm just so thankful to jamboree and the bill wilson center. i'm also thankful to my social worker. >> now, both ayala mejia and her sister are on full ride scholarships to dartmouth and stanford, respectively, a story she hopes can inspire others who may end up in a similar situation. >> i was told by various people that i wasn't going to be anything, that i was going to be another statistic in the foster care system, and i told them, that's not going to happen to me. i'm smart and i'm strong, and i'm going to show you, and i did and make my parents proud. you know, they didn't cross the border for nothing, and they didn't decide to have

wall street is seeing red today across the board. here's a look at the numbers. the dow dropped more than 337 points. the nasdaq fell 54. the s&p 500 lost 30. 18,000 costco workers represented by the teamsters union are ready to strike if a new contract isn't reached by midnight. the union says the contract needs to reflect costco's record profits. last fiscal year, costco's net income was double what it was in 2019. costco said it is negotiating in good faith. meanwhile, costco told employees at nonunion stores that they are increasing pay by $1 an hour to $30.20 and another dollar for each of the next two years, and starting pay will go up $0.50 to $20 an hour. >> for the first time in decades, the fda has approved a new type of prescription pain medication. it's called jarnovic, and it's a painkiller that does not use opioids.

news out of philadelphia. the fiery plane crash involving an air ambulance. the learjet went down just 30s after taking offt from northeast philadelphia airport around 6 p.m. there local time, six people were on board four crew, two passengers, including a pediatric patient. the plane was flying to missouri about a thousand miles away, but it crashed four miles from the airport, erupting in a fireball and engulfing homes and cars and fire. our sister station in philadelphia says several people on the ground were taken to the hospital with burn injuries. the
